why do you hate Joshua Graham or Honest Hearts so much?

This DLC and character represents a bigger issue with fandom spaces I have but particularly fallout fandom in general.

Fallout tends to tackle a lot of topics controversial and not. The first two games it’s heavy cause they are the most satirical and direct with how anti-war, nationalism and etc… they are. 3 loses this as it’s very clear once you play or learn about all the games that Todd and a bunch of guys at Bethesda just liked the 50s post apocalyptic aesthetic and refuse to actually critique the ideals of the time period like the earlier titles.

New Vegas is the game that really gets back into it a degree it almost seems like it’s taking too much on. There are things done exceedingly well while other things are done horribly wrong . I’ve made posts about it before and plan to make a big series of posts (it’s a lot of writing) but my biggest gripe is with Honest Hearts and all the gross and white savior esque depictions it has of indigenous peoples. The entirety if FNV does not do the injustices faced by indigenous people correctly on any count. My two biggest complaints are with the Khans and the tribes in Zion but I’ll talk about the former on a different post.

Both characters of Daniel and Joshua are the most accurate depiction of white saviors I’ve seen and I hate how the DLC tries to justify and defend them. The DLC treats Joshua like this man who has repented for his past actions when he is just retracing his steps after his cruelty bit him in the ass. He was one of the worst parts of the Legion and it is all but explicitly stated that if you don’t force him to be non-violent he will turn the tribes of Zion into the legion 2.0. The Dead Horses and the Sorrows are horribly infantilized by both Daniel and Joshua who both use them for self serving purposes guised by religious duty. The White Legs are the horrible stereotype of violent and savage indigenous and I personally think a lot of their interlinking with Ulysses, his hair and Ulysses character in general are distasteful and very telling of how BIPOC or POC where involved.

But outside of the game it’s the weird obsession people have with these characters ideologies and trying to make them seem more interesting/philosophical than they are. Tumblr is an echo chamber and many fans of Fallout are not the people on this site. Many people are not educated in the issues these characters convey and how poorly they do or used these characters as a poor introduction for their takes. Contrary to what a lot of people believe in, fallout has a prediomeny white cis male fanbase. More importantly a large portion of the fanbase is white.

You can joke how FNV made you trans or see the numbers on post/fics or diverse headcanons but these are kiddy numbers compared to the millions that consume the franchise and aren’t in those more aware spaces or don’t engage in the spaces the same way someone like me does/has to. Their views shape a lot more than people realize and it’s exhausting to be in a space where people don’t correct the more subtle yet toxic aspects of it but also adopt them into some weird quirky view point on the characters or issues. Some people don’t realize and some people don’t care.

My main issue is just the idolizing of these sort of thing in this fandom space and people try to acts like a game like fallout whose tagline is “War never changes” and has never had a game not revolve around political or militaristic factions issues isn’t that deep or doesn’t relate to real issues. I think it’s mainly caused by how over powered you can become and how you can strong arm your way past these learning moments as majority of people who play this game do play it as a power fantasy where they can do so as they please (which of course, go ahead it’s fun) but never take in parallels or lessons in the story as if it was just another first person shooter.

Also like another personal gripe is Cazadores spawn like hell whenever I’m there and I have not found a mod that works to mod them out so I have to play Indigenous Racism the DLC while getting jumped by giant wasps WHILE helping Mormons. Like I cannot catch a break.

Joshua 2:2 Bible Study Verse Reflection

Joshua 2:2 Chapter Summary:

Two Israelite spies sent by Joshua enter the city of Jericho and stay with Rahab, a prostitute. She hides them from the king of Jericho in return for their promise of protection for her and her family during the Israelite invasion.

Joshua 2:2 in context:

1 Then Joshua secretly sent out two spies from the Israelite camp at Acacia Grove. He instructed them, “Scout out the land on the other side of the Jordan River, especially around Jericho.” So the two men set out and came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there that night.

2 But someone told the king of Jericho, “Some Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab: “Bring out the men who have come into your house, for they have come here to spy out the whole land.”

4 Rahab had hidden the two men...

Joshua 2:2 Verse Reflection:

Who is this "someone" and why does God let "someone" act against his people?

Sometimes God will use "someone(s)" who can do actions against you to test your motives and save others (ex: Rahab, Job among others and Cross-Refs: Proverbs 16:2, Proverbs 21:2, Proverbs 24:12, 1 Samuel 16:7, Luke 16:15, Jeremiah 17:10, Romans 8:27, Revelation 2:23)

In this verse, this "someone" could have been a jealous Israelite, or a random lover or hater of Rahab, or even someone extremely patriotic since only a strong emotion caused them to risk going all the way to the king of Jericho to share this news confidently. This could even have been an angel of God though this theory is most unlikely since it would have been made clear in bible.

What can we learn about God: There are likely plenty of people who are readily available for God and Satan to use for their purposes and such people in terms of morality could be willing to do immoral or unwise actions, or even moral actions that still negatively impact you but praise God since ultimately they are still under the control of God's sovereign power. (Romans 8:28)

Questions for ourselves: If you are aware of such "someone(s)" in your life, are you willing to trust in God's sovereignty that they are still under God's plan (like Judas Iscariot was under God's plan by betraying Jesus Christ intentionally)? Are you willing to forgive and pray for this person(s) like Jesus prayed "Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing?" (Luke 23:34)

Praise God for everything He has planned for us to make us more Christ-like on this earth. (Romans 8:29)

This book immediately follows the death of Moses, with Joshua as Israel’s new dedicated leader. Joshua is a faithful and diligent warrior, following the instructions of The Lord and of Moses to the letter. God inspires Bravery, Strength, & Obedience in Joshua. Under his leadership and the steadiness of his spear AND with trust & obedience, the Israelites defeated all* the nations of the land God promised them.

My Favorite Takeaway - “Foot on Necks”

“Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said to his men. “Be strong and courageous, for the Lord is going to do this to all of your enemies.” - Joshua 10:22-25

While Joshua never seemed to question whether/how the Lord would make the way, and the people seemed to, for the most part, follow and commit to their covenant with the Lord through Joshua’s reign - there were two notable disruptions in the journey:

1. The Israelite soldiers who moved on Ai as they believed was God’s will (when God was not in fact with them), were attacked because a community member broke the covenant. Achan stole from the Lord during the previous battle (which TMH knew, of course) and after confessing, his family is punished in order to restore Israel’s covenant with God. (Joshua 7:1-5; 7:24-26)

2. In chapter 9, Joshua is deceived by a group of tribesmen (the Gibeonites) he intended to destroy, and the deception passes ✅ because Joshua did not consult with the Lord at that time. Luckily for Israel (& Joshua), those people stood by their word and were also willing to accept & serve the Lord, God of Israel (& his people, the Israelites), so their treaty was good.

God fulfilled His promise to give the land of Canaan to the descendants of Jacob (Joshua 21:43-45). Some tribes remained (or returned after victory) to the east of the Jordan river. Among the Israelites were foreign followers who were also expected to maintain their covenant with the Lord. No mention of a new appointed leader is made before Joshua’s death at 110 years of age.

It is also notable that God instructs Joshua throughout the journey, but that Joshua never communes with God or speaks with Him directly. Joshua does pray for repentance and learns about the stolen goods that were meant to be set apart for the Lord (Joshua 7:6-13), and shown whom the culprit was (Joshua 7:16-23), but he otherwise mentions no outgoing calls or requests. Joshua exhibits an undeniable and unshakable faith that God will do what He says.
