Chi era Geoffrey Bache Smith? Who was Geoffrey Bache Smith?
*Italian & English text* *Testo in inglese ed in italiano*
Italiano:
Geoffrey Bache Smith morì all’età di 22 anni.
-------------------------------------------------------------
English:
Today it would have been his birthday. Geoffrey Bache Smith was born on 18th October 1894, he lived with his brother Roger and their mother Ruth in West Bromwich (England).
Probably to you (and also to me, a couple of weeks ago) his name doesn’t sound familiar. J.R.R.Tolkien, instead, rings a bell: my boyfriend of eight years shared with me his love for everything Tolkien when we met and, thanks to his guidance, I’m learning everything there is to know about the author.
A couple of weeks ago we went to the theatre and watched “Tolkien”, a movie about J.R.R.Tolkien’s life. When Tolkien attended King’s Edward School in Birmingham, he met a young boy with the dream of becoming a poet, and that chap was Geoffrey Bache Smith.
Smith was a student of King Edward’s School since 1905, he was very talented (won prizes for Latin, French and English), involved in extracurricular activities like the Debating Society, school performances and he also played rugby.
Along with Christopher Wiseman and Robert Gilson, Smith and Tolkien formed the “T.C.B.S.”, an acronym for Tea Club, Barrovian Society. The bonds formed within the group remained strong for the author’s whole life.
Smith attended Oxford University as a History Exhibitioner of Corpus Christi College, but in 1914 decided to apply for the Oxford University Officer Training Corps. He then became a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. In 1915, he transferred to the 19th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers and promoted to Lieutenant in June 1915. He was sent to France and arrived in Bouzincourt ( a commune in the Somme department in northern France) on 6th July 1916, where Tolkien was stationed as well. On 29th November, the Battalion where Smith was made Acting Adjutant was shelled and he was wounded by a shrapnel to his right arm. He died due to the consequences of the wound on 3rd December, and buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery in France.
Thanks to Tolkien, his dream of becoming a poet came true: in 1918, John Ronald published a posthumous anthology of his poetry called “A Spring Harvest” (and he also wrote two poems about him).
Smith died when he was 22. A guy probably full of dreams, and hope for the future. He wrote letters to Tolkien and to the other members of the T.C.B.S. describing the horrors of the war as an “orgy of death and cruelty”. Why such a great poet has to be forgotten? Why a young man like him had to sacrifice his life (and his brother did the same) during the war and it’s now unknown? Why his beautiful poems aren’t accessible for non-English speakers? Why his masterpiece isn’t known all over the world? My goal with this Tumblr is to translate “A Spring Harvest” in Italian and to share his poems so that his writings start circulating more, so we can all honor him and remember him for the amazing verses and rhymes he has left for us.

E ancora, ci saranno Mariano Cohn, Leila Hatami, Rodrigo Sorogoyen e Leonardo Di Costanzo. Read the full article
