Revenge of the Underrated
15. Azur and Asmar: The Prince's Quest vs Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs

Azur and Asmar: The Prince's Quest
Dear movie from my childhood. Unique and stylized art style! and a good story and moral
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs
Red Shoes is a Snow White retelling that features a plus size princess and teaches that it's who a person is on the inside that matters. It contrasts Merlin, the male lead, who is normally conventionally handsome but cursed to be a "hideous" (actually quite cute) dwarf, a form he's desperate to escape, with Snow White/Red Shoes who is normally an adorable plus sized princess (ie not the traditional beauty) who is trapped by necessity in the form of a thin traditional princess, a form that she's incredibly uncomfortable with. It's ultimately about being your true self, loving who you are, and looking past appearances to find the beauty that lies within. Also, Patrick Warburton is the magic mirror.
It's an adorable, sweet movie that deserves more people to know about it! It was so fun and funny that after I watched it the first time, I turned around and immediately rewatched it with my husband (like he came in during the last 5 minutes, and we immediately started it over).

Fairytales in French cinema
Pictures of "Azur and Asmar", Michel Ocelot second big animated success after "Kirikou and the Witch". Released in 2006, this movie is not inspired by any precise folktale, though the story could be a One Hundred and One Nights fairytale. Whereas Kirikou was a translation of Western African folklore, this movie is set within the Muslim Maghreb of the Middle-Ages, and just like with Kirikou, Michel Ocelot uses the format of a fairytale to explore serious topics such as physical discriminaton, social injustice or geographical displacement.

Sorry not sorry but we, French people, have the best movies and the best movie-makers ever
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kirikou et la sorcière
Princes et princesses
Dragons et princesses
Azur et Asmar
All of them by Michel Ocelot
And, obviously, THE movie that got THE Miyazaki inspired to do his:
Tumblr media
Le roi et l'oiseau, by Paul Grimault
This one is probably my favourite movie of ALL time.
Like.
It's brilliant.
I loved it when I was a child, I still love it now for different reasons. The double meanings are incredible, the animation is SO DAMN GOOD (and the film was released in 1980) (it took over 30 years to make because the production was a disaster but the result is... MASTERPIECE)

Truly one of the most beautiful movie for me

Images description under the cut
[ID: 10 pictures from the movie Azur and Asmar
The first one is five black men playing Karkabou (two metallic pieces making sound when slapped against each other) they are wearing orange clothes and fez
The second one is a view from above of richly decorated table, there's a lot of food amongst which a tajine, pomegranate, fruits, rolls and various food from the Maghreb
The third one is a line of small babouche (for kids). and one big babouche, they are all various shades of green, kellow, orange and brown
The fourth one is a rose bush with a palm tree, the bush makes a hole on the right in which you can see a black cat cleaning his paw on a rock
The fifth one is a bright red lion on a rocky background, facing us with Azur on his back. Azur is wearing blue clothes and a white hat
The sixth picture is a man and a woman under a tent, they are only outlined on a beautiful purple field behind them, he is playing a flute (a ney or a nay I think) and she is singing
The seventh one is Azur and the Princess Chamsous Sabah, outlined as well, in a tree with a night sky behind them
The eighth one is the inside of a blue palace, the Djinn fairy trapped in a glass temple. The walls are covered of mosaic pattern of flowers and arch.
The ninth and tenth pictures are mirrors of each other, in the same palace as before Azur and the Djinn fairy hold hand in the first one and Asmar and the elves fairy in the second one. Azur and the Elves fairy are wearing white rich clothes, with a middle age in Europe inspiration while Asmar and the Djinn fairy are wearing blue and red rich colours with a middle age in Maghreb inspiration.]

Day 1 of @wayfarer-week and the prompt #1
VIEW
Tumblr media
“What’s it like?” you ask. “The Spire?”
“It’s a citadel,” they reply. “A grand citadel. I don’t think there’s any other buildings in the world built like her. It looks like it’s either about to bite you or eat you, but it’s home. It’s home to a lot of us. Even professional wanderers need a place to return to when the world’s worn them out.”

Do you have any Actor Peacekeeper art?
My guess is that she’s a voice actor for a CGI character.
I'm sorry I don't have art of actor Keeper
And you're right that in that AU the character of Keeper is CGI, but her voice actress does act with the others while wearing a green + foam costume to help place the character
I don't have art but I have a sort of description !
Actor Keeper is Pamela "Paz" Leuliet, an extraverted lady, full of life !
She's motherly in her own way, more on the tough love side, so playing a mother character like Keeper is quite the challenge for Paz
I gotta develop on that a little more, but we had that one joke that Paz, Juliette and other actors kinda fought about who keeps the Filante plush they use on set lmao ( Paz being Keeper, who's close to Filante, and Juliette is the VA for Filante in that world)
Now, I don't have art of Paz, but I do have art of human Keeper ! Behold !
