tag game : answer + tag nine people you want to get to know better and/or catch up with!
@peachym00 tagged me in this thing like years ago and i never got around to doing it because — welp, depression 😵💫 — but here i am! thank you my love!
🌸 favourite colour : sunshine yellow. probably. or it was at one point. it was also prussian blue at one point. it's probably ace purple now. it's been for quite a while.
🌸 last song I listened to : the moon represents my heart, from moonlight chicken.
🌸 last film I watched : lmaooo i honestly don't remember, I haven't watched any movies in a while. but i did re-watch ep. 5 of only friends — the 25th hour episode — last night.
🌸 currently reading : haven't picked up a completed giant fic in a while, but currently following a few sandray fics. but I'm especially tuned into this firstkhao getting together fic by my dearest @semantics-error . it's delicious and heart wrenching.
🌸 currently craving : i wanted french fries today but ordered in chinese. it was good. but i would have still liked french fries.
🌸 coffee or tea : tea, any day. coffee just gives me acidity whether i take it with milk or not lmao. also tea has more varieties, so.
tagging ; @aniland @skyfish7 @kaleidoskuls @semantics-error @boyslovecorner
feel free to ignore to hell and back lol

2023 Recap - Songs from (QL) Dramas
I've been tagged by @troubled-mind to make a list of my favorites songs from this year's QL dramas (thank you so much 💕) and of course I can't resist. I liked a lot of music from shows this year, which is great but made the selection harder so it will be a little long, I hope you'll forgive me.
OST I've been milking in full
I don't very often go through full OST unless someone does a background music playlist i can put on (Like this one for La Pluie by troubled-mind, and this one for To Sir, With Love for example) but two stood out for me this year.
My School President OST - I knew in advance I would enjoy a musical show, and I have to say I was NOT disappointed. My favorite though is ฟัง by Fourth, Ford, Satang, Winny, and the fantastic Pijika Jittaputta. Have a go at the original too!
Unintentional Love Story OST - This one came late this year for me, but i have been listening to the whole thing again and again. My favorite is Beautiful Day by Cha Seowon. I really enjoy his voice a LOT, and I'm weak for a nice, so soft it's even a little mushy love ballad.
With those two out of the way, let's go through the list country by country I think.
From Thailand 🇹🇭
ลางสังหรณ์ by Teng Tachaya from The Sign
This one is just a banger! It literally rocks, and I keep belting out the chorus every single time i listen to it. I love everything about it, even the spoken words. Also, not music related, but that costume!!
เงา by Lazyloxy from Shadow
I like Lazyloxy's voice a lot, as well as the rhythm/bass line (?) during the verses. There is an edge in that song that fits the show very well, too.
พรุ่งนี้ by Ford Arun from Moonlight Chicken
Ford's voice, do I need to say more? Tbh I got a little teary the first (ten) time(s) I listen to it.This ballad is so very touching, it's gentle and hopeful, I can never tire of it.
Honorable mentions >
รักคุณยิ่งกว่าใคร by NuNew's cover of Got Jakraphan from Cutie Pie 2. I loved this one so much I got myself a video editor so I could post it there. Only honorable because it's a cover, but it got me into luk thung so it deserves to be here.
เพลง รักนี้มากับดวง by Bmine & Near from Lucky My Love. This one is just because it's goddamn cute, sweet and peppy, and it makes me smile and bop my head. Sometimes I don't ask for more.
From Japan 🇯🇵
U&I by Hi-Fi Unicorn from Kimi ni wa todokanai
It's just a perfectly crafted pop song imo. It's cute, fresh and lively, fitting the show perfectly too. Since it came out, you can catch me humming "kimi ni waaa todokanai hmm hmm hmm" all day, every day, so it deserves its place on the list!
Yoruwazura by osage feat Ishino Riko from Kimi to nara koi wo shite mite mo
This one got me the second Ishino Riko started singing. The harmonies between the two are SO good! I really like the guitar in this one, and the little claps in the background. It's also really easy to hum so it stays with me a lot.
Bitter by Royce from Utsukushii Kare season 2
The contrast between the energy of the melody and the nearly bored sound of the voice (the singer sounds like their mouth does not open fully) works reaaally well for me. It's catchy and fun, and well, the lyrics are just so perfectly Hira...
ふたたび Futatabi by HIROBA & Otsuka Ai from Bokura no micro na shuumatsu
I was very surprised when I saw it was a feat with Otsuka Ai (who I only knew for her sugary pop in early 2000). The melancholy of the lyrics and the melody are beautiful, I am a huge fan of the way their voices mesh together, and I can't resist a piano + violins combo like that.
Honorable mention > Go Sign by Billy Laurent from Ameiro Paradox. The little piano, the rhythm, that chorus, it makes me shake my ass every single time.
From Taiwan 🇹🇼
'痛苦擁抱 (Painful Hug) by Ozone from Oh No! Here Comes Trouble
(I won't hear anything about technicality and it being a QL show or not =3) Had not realized it was from a boy group before checking the clip for this list. I like the way the melody rises for the chorus, their voices are pleasant, and it carries both power and some sort of melancholy that reminds me very much of Pu Yiyong.
Honorable mention > Come With Me by K6 from Marry My Dead Body. The whole OST of that movie is great, but I somehow got completely obsessed by this one from the gym scene at the start. It also features Austin Lin (I think as backup on the chorus).
From Korea 🇰🇷
IoU by UTOPI from The New Employee
It's a sweet, simple one that never fails to put me in a good mood, and sometimes that's enough to listen to a song non stop over months =3
Natural by Young K from A Breeze of Love
This one is also sunny, light and joyful. I like the guitars and I am especially fond of Young K's voice - it got me looking into him which I do not regret. A nice little surprise for the end of the year.
Thank you if you made it all the way through it, otherwise...
Tl;dr you can find all songs under this playlist (´꒳`)♡
i'm not sure who would have fun doing this, maybe @iguessitsjustme if you fancy it? Anyone who see this and want to do it, please tag me so I can have a look at your faves! <3
#f i n a l l y managed to go through this one!#after rearranging it three times#but yes here are this year's favorites <3#music#(Kat you're stronger than me I would never have managed to keep it to 10 lol)

I want to look at the stars with you for another 10.000 days
Midnight Series: Moonlight Chicken พระจันทร์มันไก่ | Moonlight Chicken (TV) fanfiction
HeartLiMing
2k words
For @remapped-soul
Read on AO3
How are you? Are you sleeping? Are you eating? Is it very hard?
Heart’s mom always asks the same questions whenever she calls, hands clasped together after she’s done. Sitting back in his couch, Heart can predict the signs before she even finishes them. His father lets her speak, an arm around her shoulders, his eyes following Heart’s replies. Heart doesn’t mind the flow of their conversation, and he doesn’t think his father is uninterested. Sometimes, his father will wire him money and tell him to buy a book he had mentioned he wanted, or tell him to buy something for dinner when Heart mentions studying late into the night.
His father is always polite to Li Ming when he sees him, while Heart’s mom says Li Ming is too skinny and has dark circles under his eyes and is he taking care of himself, are they taking advantage of him at work, are they treating him well?
Heart understands his father a little more as he learns to live with Li Ming.
He has categorized his smiles — genuine to Heart’s mother, strained when he gets home, tired but warm in the morning. He can tell by the curve of his spine when something is bothering him, and Heart pokes at him until Li Ming speaks. When he wakes up before Li Ming, when he has the privilege to watch Li Ming rise, the pale sunrise on his face, the light reflecting in his eyes, Heart follows every movement he makes. The tilt of his chin, his fingers closing around the blanket, the shadows cast by his eyelashes on his cheek. His lips say good morning and Heart’s lips form the same words, and it still makes Li Ming smile wide, showing all the cherished creases on his face.
Every day settles on him like the warm sun, routine falling into place with ease. Every day, Heart knows a little more. Knows when Li Ming needs to vent his frustrations or excitedly share something new he learned at work. Knows when Li Ming needs to be left alone, eyes still looking for the bartending job he wants but does not yet have. Another day ends, another day begins.
How is Heart doing?
Heart can attend classes again, have his own groups again. Now he has people on his phone who post a really absurd amount of stickers and talk shit about their professors just like everyone else. He can eat ice cream when it’s chilly and do his homework outside while brown leaves fall from their branches. He takes pictures of stray cats and sends them to Li Ming – even though he knows they can’t keep a pet at their current housing – like a shared secret. Sometimes Li Ming says they could sneak it in through the back door. Maybe just to see Heart laugh, but Heart would not put it past him. Not when Li Ming gets a certain glint in his eyes.
America is colder, but not always. When he can walk with Li Ming, his hand in Li Ming’s hand, it’s different. To walk with Li Ming in daylight, to discover everything with him, is different. He watches Li Ming speak with others with increasing confidence, lips shaping words Heart learned once, but that are harder to recognize now. He doesn’t get lost with Li Ming. They walk and walk and walk, until the streetlights are on and their legs are sore, and Heart doesn’t get tired of it. Maybe he will, someday. Heart doesn’t think about that. There is so much he wants to see, and so much Li Ming wants to share. With his hand in Heart’s hand, careful so Heart can follow.
When Heart finishes all of his homework and the night is long and Li Ming is not yet back, Heart grabs his phone and dreams of endless places to see with Li Ming. He wants to travel to see the cherry blossoms in Japan, to roam through the streets of Hong Kong at night, see the color of Indonesian waters. What is Canada like during autumn? What are the lavender fields like in France? Heart dreams of the days he first left his room with Li Ming, seemingly so long ago now, and the exhilaration he can’t help but seek again and again and again.
But when he talks to Li Ming about it, there’s a straight line in his lips. He looks at the pictures Heart shows him and he agrees that it all looks beautiful, but there is no enthusiasm in him. Heart doesn’t look for a promise, for a solid plan. When he shows his phone to Li Ming and looks at him, Heart is only thinking of the following year. And the one after that. To be with him, to stay with him.
Perhaps his flaw is that he has become too comfortable. That he believes they understand each other perfectly, but forgets Li Ming can’t read his thoughts. When Heart keeps talking about traveling, when he pulls Li Ming to look when he tries to turn away, he doesn’t expect Li Ming to explode.
“I don’t know when we can leave! I don’t know, Heart!”
His mouth moves as he signs, and then he aborts another phrase, something that Heart thinks he knows, thinks he understands, from all that Li Ming has shared with him.
“I can do it for you,” Heart tells him, because he can. Eventually, Heart believes anything will be possible. “For us. You don’t have to provide for me.”
You’re not my caretaker, he thinks, but doesn’t externalize. He’s thankful he doesn’t. The fight leaving Li Ming in heavy breaths is enough, as are the hard steps that Heart feels but can’t hear as Li Ming walks away and leaves, the dinner forgotten on the stove.
Heart can’t sleep without Li Ming.
Or he can, but he doesn’t want to. His body aches, his eyes sting, but he doesn’t allow himself to sleep. He doesn’t want to fall asleep and miss Li Ming coming back. He wants to stand by the front door, but he doesn’t. He paces around their bedroom, sits on the bed and hugs his knees to his chest. He looks at the lamp on his bedside table until the glare draws shadows on his retinas.
Before Li Ming, he didn’t want much. He wanted to breathe, and to walk, and to extend his arms beyond the walls of a home that didn’t feel like a home. With Li Ming, he wants so much. Every second is precious, a moment he can’t miss. He wants to graduate fast, and start working, and feel like he can stand on his own for the first time. In a paradoxical way, he never wants the current days to end; he, sitting by Li Ming’s side in the living room, both of them immersed in their own studies, until Heart drops his head on Li Ming’s shoulder, feeling the vibration of his English practice, until the words morph into humor, until Li Ming is nudging him and poking him and he’s giggling and they’re wrestling on the floor, and every worry seems as small as a speckle of dust when compared to Li Ming’s smile.
Heart wants everything. The future, every city across the globe, every minute and every second of the present with Li Ming. He wants Li Ming. How long has he been gone, will he come back now?
Heart only realizes he’s crying when he looks up at the figure of Li Ming by the door and he can’t properly see his face or his expression, his vision blurred by dark spots and tears. He stays where he is, raises his hands before he lets them drop to his lap and then he raises them again. He wants to reach for Li Ming and wipe his own tears because this is his fault, and he’s saying, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” until Li Ming stops his hands and embraces him.
Li Ming isn’t crying. After a few minutes of crying all over his shirt, Heart feels embarrassed, but he still keeps his arms around Li Ming, and his head on Li Ming’s shoulder. He’s playing with the hem of Li Ming’s shirt and wondering if he’s too selfish when Li Ming pushes him back and they finally look at each other. Li Ming looks exhausted.
“Did you eat?” Heart asks, and Li Ming can only give him an unconvincing half-smile. Heart makes to stand but Li Ming grabs his wrist and pulls him back to bed.
“Tomorrow,” is his response, and Heart frowns but doesn’t fight him.
Li Ming stands and starts changing, and in the warm pool of the lamp light, Heart thinks about how different he already looks from when they first met. Li Ming had always carried himself with a firmness in his step that Heart admired. Like he knew his place in the world. Heart knows it’s not exactly like that, now that he doesn’t worship Li Ming so much. Now that they have shared so many secrets, now that they share a life. But his shoulders seem broader now. Maybe not too much, but it’s noticeable to Heart. A small touch of time in their story.
Li Ming turns back to him. He’s tired but sincere, and Heart is filled with longing. He does open his arms to Li Ming then, calls for him without words, so he can finally lie down with an armful of Li Ming and surrender. What was it like to fall asleep without Li Ming’s scent, his weight against him? Heart doesn’t want to remember.
Are they sleeping? Are they eating? Are they well?
It’s colder in America. There are still places where Heart feels a tinge of helplessness if he goes alone, because people look at him and his language like he’s not someone who belongs there. There are days he sleeps slouched over the coffee table in the living room and wakes up with a headache when Li Ming has to get him to go to bed. And having to leave for classes and leave Li Ming asleep, peaceful and warm and beautiful, is a battle Heart has to fight too often.
But Heart loves his days. He loves his friends with whom he shares notes, stories from home, and movies every Thursday after class. He loves the overly sweet hot beverages the coffee shops serve once October comes. He loves it when children walk by his group of friends and wave and stare at the way they sign. And at the end of the day, at the start and end of it all, in every plan of his future—
The first snowflake Heart ever notices melts against Li Ming’s cheek.
“Ah,” he sees Li Ming say, his mouth opening in delight. Then he turns to Heart and signs, “the first snow.”
Heart doesn’t think Li Ming should lie with his head on Heart’s lap on a public bench, but Li Ming doesn’t seem to care.
“Wet,” Heart signs, and smiles when Li Ming chuckles.
“I know, I know. We’ll go in a second.”
Li Ming looks at the slowly falling snow and then at Heart. His red beanie almost matches his flushed cheeks perfectly. Heart places a hand on Li Ming’s chest. He wants to take Li Ming ice skating at the place his friends told him to go. He wants to go on a Christmas date with him with the city’s multicolored lights twinkling overhead, illuminating the night. And when the new year comes, he wants to tell Li Ming about all the new years he wants to see with him. Anywhere he wants to be.
Li Ming waves a hand in front of his eyes and he focuses back on the boy lying on his lap. The boy at the end of his scented road.
“I’m hungry,” Li Ming signs, and Heart laughs. It’s the way he says he doesn’t want to cook tonight.
“Let’s go home,” Heart replies. Still they don’t move. Not for a few beats, while the snow falls in thin swirls around them.
Tomorrow, Heart will tell him that he loves him.
Tonight, he loves him so much he cannot say anything.

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
Augghh I love these games! thank you for tagging me Mickey 🥺🌸(@thisautistic)
3 Ships You Like :
1. Yohan/Moogyeong from The Shape of Your Love (manhwa by Park Nodeok)
this is my ultimate OTP. i never had OTPs before them. they'll be my rise and fall. but yeah, anyway. they. my boys.
2. Vegas/Pete from KinnPorsche The Series
they had me by the throat even before i knew kpts existed and just, well. then i watched kpts and found them and they were everything i hoped for and more. a lot of it is also because vegas and i are very much alike without the mass murder aspect 😂
3. Alan/Gaipa from Moonlight Chicken
listen, MLC is like, the best thing i've watched in a while and alangaipa gave me what i had been craving since yohan/moogyeong c. 2019 : a small rare/ghost ship with barely any screentime but that hooked people in worldwide. firstkhao's acting was just bonus. alangaipa represent everything that i want from my own life. i couldn't not love them.
First Ship Ever :
Kanata/Miyu from Da!Da!Da!

oh, these two. i was head over heels in love with them. i shipped them even when i didn't know that shipping existed or what it meant, when we didn't even have anime on TV besides the broadcast on SONY at 5pm sometimes. i just wanted them in love and happy and raising a kid together. ugh i miss them.
Last Song You Heard :
The Moon Represents My Heart, by the Moonlight Chicken cast! God do I love this song so much! It fits all the ships so well! The lyrics are gold! (I also recently found that this is a cover of the OG by Teresa Teng and that's even more beautiful??)
(also, this has been helping me visualize and write a lot of sand/ray, surprisingly enough.)
Favorite Childhood Book :
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
ahhh, well, this is embarassing. i didn't have a favourite book until adulthood actually. and it's my only favourite (as in something i've read time and again). i don't think i'll ever find another book like this one. this is it for me. nothing can ever top this. (yes, I'm very picky about my favourites lmao)
Currently Reading :
i found out this fic exists because of twitter discourse lmao, and I'm not even a dramione fan, i'll probably never read another work, but goddamn, the writing was stellar. lived up to all that hype. good stuff. (I'm almost at the end so wish me luck!)
Currently Watching :
Our Dining Table
no offence to those who love this, i loved the manga when i read it years ago, but lord was i bored to death even on the second trial at watching this lol. I'm soldiering on though, i'll get through this!
Currently Consuming :
Thai BLs
uhh... not sure what answer this demands actually, so, uhhh... lots of thai BL i guess? that's really what i've been consuming lately. i had never watched thai BLs before KPTS in 2023 so it's eye opening, they've gotten better ( i tried once before , quite a while back when a friend recommended, and i found it ridiculous so i never thought i'd actually ever watch any again lol, mostly because i never was a fan of live action BL dramas in general)
Currently Craving :
💵💵💵💵
well, i'll be honest here, money is vital and that's what I'm craving lol, i gotta feed myself and my cats and pay a 50k laptop repair bill that my company thrust on me even though it's not my fault it's damaged. anyway, essentially I'm experiencing financial doom among other unfortunate events, so here's your chance to commission a fic or donate at my KOFI so...... haha.
alright, this was super fun! I'm tagging @skyfish7 @semantics-error @justfionn @boyslovecorner @peachym00 @lilitblaukatz @ae-azile
(please feel free to ignore if you're feeling up to it!)

Spotify Tag Game!
@shouldiusemyname tagged me, so here I am . . .
1. My absolute fav song atm
The lyrics are just so relatable. Plus, the song never gets stuck in my head, so I keep listening to it until it sticks, but as soon as I finish listening to the song, I can never remember how it goes for some reason. It's strangely addictive.
2. VVS MY DIAMONDS I DON'T NEED NO LIGHT TO SHINE
. . .
3.
Spotify has played it for me so many times that I'm starting to get tired of it. It's a really good song tho. Go listen.
4.
It starts like a Disney song from Cinderella with some awesome classical music. But then GUITAR!!! And killer vocals!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S GOT THE BEST VIBES
5. Lil bit of shameless promotion . . .
So if any of you have watched Strangers from Hell (murder, Hannibal vibes, homoerotic gaslighting, seductive murder dentist, jagiya killer boi, go check it out), you should read Until Death Do Us Unite by @amethystina on ao3, this is from the playlist I listen to while I read it. Ahem. Anyway.
6.
It's so beautiful. I almost cried the first time I heard it.
7. ICBWYBRBMSIDSCYPCOCHMT
Lyric Credits go to Hyunjin. Obviously.
*hides skz obsession under a trenchcoat*
8.
Gives Arctic Monkeys vibes. Khaotung sounds so cool. Literally everything about it is badass. I really need to catch up with Only Friends . . .
9.
Kim Gaon and Kang Yohan from The Devil Judge vibes. I love this show so much that I'll restrain myself from recommending it to anyone. So that way you won't become obsessed like me. But just know that it's about a morally gray sinnamon (s is intentional) roll and his morally grayer sugar daddy who tear down a corrupt justice system (it's a kdrama, if you can't tell). Amethystina also wrote some fics abt this show too!
10. Gives tdj and sfh vibes at the same time
An iconic song by an iconic man.
(I feel like this turned into a rec list instead for some reason.)
Also, @amethystina, I invite you to do this if u haven't already : )

Author: DLanaDHZ Beta: @jessicamdawn and @seekingidlewild Rating: T for mentions of homophobia Fandom: Moonlight Chicken Pairing: Heart/Li Ming Chapters: 1 Word Count: 1,740 Additional Tags: Self-Reflection, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Homophobia, helpful boyfriends, Introspection, Eye Contact, Physical Disability, Canon Disabled Character, Boys In Love
Summary: For a long time, Heart resented being deaf and the way it limited his world. When he met Li Ming, his silent world suddenly became so much larger and louder. Heart found happiness with Li Ming, and he loved the other boy so much, but sometimes he worried he was holding Li Ming back with his deafness. But sometimes Heart understood that being deaf was a protection Li Ming didn’t have.
While out on a date, Heart realizes something is bothering Li Ming. Something only he can hear, but Heart can’t.
Read on AO3
When Heart was thirteen, he was pretty average. Well, as average as he could feel when he was realizing he wasn’t the same as his friends - that he didn’t care about flirting with the girls at school or fantasizing about what it would be like to marry or have sex with the hottest actresses and models.
He remembered laughing with his friends about a new movie and then making an offhand comment about how hot the main actor was. The jeers and teasing that went up around the circle immediately told him he’d said something not-normal, and he played it off as heterosexually as possible. None of them guessed that he wasn’t joking.
When Heart was fourteen, he got really sick while traveling abroad during break. First, his whole body ached. Lights felt like daggers to his eyes. The doctors thought it was the world’s worst migraine until the fever struck him down a day later. When sounds started to seem faded or distant, he cried with fear. His parents were panicked. The doctors were nervous.
When the medication started to work on the virus, everyone else seemed so relieved, but Heart wanted to die. His world had gone silent, and there was nothing he or his parents’ money could do about it.
At first, his mother had been a fighter, determined to try anything and everything to help him regain his hearing. While she argued with experts, Heart learned sign language. When his mother wrote down words to ask how he was, he lied and told her he was fine and that he was hopeful about getting his hearing back. But he knew it was hopeless. The doctors didn’t lie to him. It was only his mother in denial.
After a few months, it became clear that this was his life now. He tried to teach his mother basic signs, but she always found a reason to be too busy to watch his hands. His father, also, was too busy with work to dedicate any real time to his newly disabled son. More than ever before, it seemed both of his parents had more to do outside the house than in it. And Heart was no longer allowed to go out to meet them or anyone else.
His once bright world became the quiet solemn loneliness of his house.
Heart was resentful of his solitude, of his illness, of his parents. Eventually that resentfulness turned to sorrow and acceptance. He had not died on the trip at fourteen-years-old, but he had lost his life all the same.
Then, on a completely ordinary, boring day three years later, a delivery of chicken and rice startled Heart into a whole new life all over again.
Li Ming was so loud that Heart could hear him even without sound. He was so bright that Heart could notice him even without looking directly at him. His joy and his anger and his passion were all so intense that it forced Heart’s stagnant world into motion.
Li Ming learned sign language for Heart and helped him communicate. He helped Heart find others in the deaf community, helped him get out of the house and experience life, helped him find a university and convince his parents to let him apply, helped Heart through grief and mended his relationship with his parents. The other boy did so much for Heart that Heart often worried he was nothing more than a burden.
Except Li Ming smiled at him and looked at him like something precious. Li Ming made sure to touch Heart even when they had nothing to talk about, to let Heart know he wasn’t alone. Li Ming called him “boyfriend” and kissed him. He seemed so happy when he was with Heart, and that was usually enough to assuage Heart’s fears.
Heart still wished he could do more for his boyfriend.
Soon they would be in a new country, with only each other to rely on, making their way in the world as a couple and as individuals. They were on the cusp of a whole new world. It was thrilling. It was terrifying.
For the first time in years, Heart looked forward to his birthday. He was turning eighteen, he’d been accepted into the university of his choice, and his parents were throwing a party for him that included all of Heart’s new friends. It was so normal and happy that Heart could almost forget his three years of lackluster celebrations.
More than the party, however, Heart was excited for the afternoon before it. He and Li Ming were going to the movies and then walking down the boardwalk. Movies with Li Ming were always fun, and if Li Ming didn’t have to be his subtitles, they held hands and crossed ankles during the show.
Heart loved playing with Li Ming’s fingers, feeling the soft skin and remembering the joy he felt when he realized this crazy delivery kid was really making an effort to talk with his hands just so Heart would have someone to talk to at all. He loved Li Ming’s hands so much. Sometimes he missed parts of the movie because his eyes stayed on them too long, but that was okay. He just wanted to be near Li Ming.
After the movie, they held hands as they walked out of the mall and down the street toward the beach. Li Ming talked a lot, his hand making what gestures it could, Heart making up the rest by reading his lips and body language. If the sentence was too complicated, Li Ming would text it to him instead and then buzz with energy while he waited for Heart to read it. Stopping by the entrance to the beach, Li Ming typed a long message.
“My uncle bought me a new suitcase yesterday. He said my old one was no good. He also wouldn’t let me refuse it. Apparently it counts as your birthday gift?”
Heart chuckled. “He’s making sure you can come with me to America. Thank him for the gift.”
The message sent, was read, but no typing bubble popped up. That’s when Heart realized Li Ming had also stopped buzzing with excitement. His grip on Heart’s hand was normally lax, but it suddenly grew tight. When he looked up to ask Li Ming if he was okay, he found the other’s eyes intense and focused on nothing.
Heart put his phone in his pocket and tried to sign “what?”, but Li Ming’s eyes darted away from him before he could. His normally happy face was pulled into a tight frown as he tried to look around at people and yet not look at them at the same time. His jaw was tight. His fingers tensed again.
When they’d first met, Li Ming would let his anger take over. He was quick to defend himself and wasn’t afraid of conflict or consequences. Over the year, however, he’d cooled down. He picked his battles and tried not to fight if he could help it. But something was bothering him now. He looked like he wanted to fight. He looked like he wanted to cry.
Heart glanced around, trying to figure out what might have set his boyfriend off. It was obviously something Li Ming had heard, and Heart had no way of guessing where it was coming from or what it had been.
There were many people walking around this close to the shops and the beach, and Heart had to guess it was something to do with one of them. He scanned the crowds and found a group that kept glancing at the two young men. They were talking, their eyes sliding over Heart and Li Ming like a dirty secret, and then looking back at each other as they spoke. But their body language didn’t suggest they were whispering.
When they angled properly, Heart could read a little of their conversation. Mostly it was useless words, filler stuff, but he caught enough. Gay. Disgusting. Gross. Creepy. And they laughed about it. No wonder Li Ming wanted to fight them.
Heart tugged on Li Ming’s hand and the other glanced sharply up at him. He looked shocked, like maybe he hadn’t realized how distracted he’d been by the words he’d heard. He pulled his hand away from Heart’s so he could properly sign “I’m sorry” while his mouth moved too fast for Heart to read.
There was no sound. Heart couldn’t hear a thing, and yet Li Ming’s heart was screaming in front of him. He was trying to play it off and pretend, but Heart knew him better than that. He could see the truth in his eyes, in his mouth, in his hands. Li Ming was trying to protect him from the nasty words he’d heard, but it wasn’t Heart who needed the help. He hadn’t heard anything, after all.
Carefully, Heart gave a pointed stare to the group, so that they and Li Ming knew he understood, then he directed all of his attention on Li Ming’s face. Before his boyfriend could really get started on trying to explain the group, Heart gently placed his hands over Li Ming’s ears and held him in place.
He looked straight into Li Ming’s eyes while he blocked out as much sound as he could, and it seemed that, for a moment, the world was quieter for Li Ming too. Like somehow, the peace that came with Heart’s disability was able to reach him through this small gesture. He placed his hands calmly over Heart’s and rested there.
Li Ming had been acting as Heart’s ears for a year and had helped him in so many ways. Sometimes Heart forgot that he helped ground Li Ming too. He pulled Li Ming out of his head and reminded him about the good that came with being still sometimes.
Under his hands, Li Ming began to smile again, and this time it was real. He lowered his hands and signed, “Thank you.”
Heart dropped his hands as well to sign “For what?”
Li Ming shrugged. “Everything,” he said. “I love you.”
Catching his breath, Heart pressed a hand to his chest and smiled warmly. “I love you,” he signed back. He motioned to the beach. “Do you still want to go?”
Nodding emphatically, Li Ming snatched up his hand again. Even without sign language, his answer was loud and clear. “Absolutely!”
