I’ve seen the word Khaire used a lot in the Hellenic Polytheism community, and I was wondering what it meant. From what I came across, it seems to be a greeting of some sort, but I don’t know the context it is used in.

Khaire is an ancient Greek greeting, yes. It's a friendly greeting that means something along the lines of "be of good cheer" or "welcome" or "be well". It was typically used to greet others kindly and politely and was so common that even Homer used it. From my knowledge, it comes from the verb, Χαίρω, meaning to rejoice at or take pleasure in something.

It's pretty much a kind greeting that was meant to express your enthusiasm about seeing someone. It was typically used in a positive, lighthearted context, but in modern times, it appears to be used more formally as Χαίρετε rather than Χαίρε (I obviously could be wrong about that; I'm not a linguistics expert by any means, and when I went to Greece myself, I heard literally no one using that word lol).

Any linguistics, classics, or Greek-speaking people are welcome to correct me; I found all this through various sources online (some I do not trust, tbh), and I'd rather be correct than right. 👌

What do you think about people who are in their periods praying, giving offerings and/or approaching the altar? I read that you weren’t allowed to enter the temples in ancient greece if you were menstruating so I have that doubt

So, of the hundreds of inscribed temple regulations we have from ancient Greece, not a single one bars menstruating women from participating in ancient Greek religious life.

There are four exceptions to this rule, though calling them "exceptions" is admittedly very generous.

To begin, all four inscriptions come from late antiquity and they all belong to temples of Near Eastern import. Of note is the fact that not one of these four temples belongs to a Greek god. This suggests that certain Near Eastern traditions did exclude menstruating women from participating in religious life, but the same cannot be said about Greek women. Why is that, though?

The four inscriptions (which were written in ancient Greek) give us some clues. For starters, the word "menstruation" is not explicitly used in temple inscriptions found on the Greek mainland; it is instead referred to as a "female matter." This skirting around any direct mention of menstruation is representative of the near-complete segregation of the sexes in ancient Greece.

To put it simply, Greek men did not discuss "female matters," or the female body, for that matter. Doing so was considered extremely taboo. So taboo that physicians—by and large—did not treat female patients, meaning most women died of illness. Addressing menstruation in direct terms would mean that it was no longer out of sight and out of mind, and the Greeks likely wanted to keep it that way.

The issue is made doubly complex when you realize that we don't actually know how ancient Greek women managed their periods. Experts like Dr. Helen King—a classicist who specializes in menstruation in ancient Greece—theorize that women of means maybe wore linen cloth to catch their menses. Poor women (who couldn't afford such expenditures) likely remained in their homes to bleed freely.

What does any of this information tell modern-day worshippers? Well, it suggests that we simply don't know enough to be able to say one way or the other whether or not menstruating Greek women were excluded from religious life.

It most certainly tells us that menses management is way different now than it was back then. And unlike our religious predecessors, we now have personal hygiene products we can use to ensure we don't bleed out at the altar lol 😆

In general, I don't think it makes sense to pretend like modern worshippers can't menstruate and worship at the same time. There certainly isn't enough ancient evidence to suggest that was the standard, so why make it the standard now? This is definitely one of those things where I'm like "do what feels most appropriate to you."

I don't menstruate anymore, but if I did, I'd probably still worship. Alternatively, if I was on my period and feeling mentally unclean/generally gross, I wouldn't (unless I was approaching the gods for some relief).

I know people who take breaks from their religious duties while menstruating, and I know others who don't make any changes to their routines at all. It all depends on your personal comfort level. Just like how everyone's period is different, everyone's worship is different! And that's OK ((:

Cattle of Ra, why has no one told me that worshipping the lord Ra was such a nice experience?

Since last week I’ve been almost exclusively and intentionally worshipping and talking to the Kemetic gods, especially Ra and he’s so…nice!!!

He’s one of the coolest and nicest deities I’ve ever interacted with. With him, I felt protected, watched after and guided, almost like an ox led by its shepherd

Ra is just so “WOW” it feels wonderful to talk about it

Worshipping Ra and the Kemetic gods has shifted my whole cosmology, and I don’t really know how to make it work with the one that I have already have formed, like how I associate thunder with Zeus, but now hear Sutekh roar in the clouds. I guess I’ll have to find a way to merge the two but it may be quite hard, so your support and prayers are appreciated

Το να ξοδεύει τόσο δημόσιο χρήμα ένας υπουργός για τα χαλιά του γραφείου του είναι ενδεικτικό της αντίληψης που έχει για τη διαχείριση του δημόσιου χρήματος

Είμαι απολύτως βέβαιος ότι οι επιθέσεις που δέχεται η υπουργός τουρισμού, η Όλγα η Κεφαλογιάννη με τ’ όνομα, επειδή έδωσε για την αγορά δύο χαλιών για τις ανάγκες του γραφείου της 17.980 ευρώ (ούτε καν 18.000) είναι εντελώς άδικες. Μπορεί τα χρήματα να μοιάζουν πολλά για δύο χαλιά συνολικού εμβαδού 23 τετραγωνικών μέτρων (781,7 ευρώ το τετραγωνικό) αλλά το κέρδος που σίγουρα θα έχει η Ελλάδα από αυτά είναι πολλαπλάσιο.

Για αρχή να διευκρινίσω ότι, όπως γράφει και η απόφαση για την απ’ ευθείας ανάθεση, τα χαλιά προορίζονται να καλύψουν «τις ανάγκες του Γραφείου Υπουργού του Υπουργείου Τουρισμού». Η υπουργός Κεφαλογιάννη με τ’ όνομα δεν προμηθεύτηκε αυτά τα χαλιά επειδή τα ήθελε ούτε επειδή τα έκανε κέφι. Τα προμηθεύτηκε επειδή καλύπτουν πάγιες και διαρκείς ανάγκες του υπουργείου στο οποίο προΐσταται. Της ήταν απολύτως απαραίτητα προκειμένου να επιτελέσει το σπουδαίο έργο το οποίο επιτελεί στο υπουργείο (όπως ακριβώς είχε ανάγκη τα λουλούδια συνολικής αξίας 6000 ευρώ στο υπουργείο Αγροτικής Υπανάπτυξης ο συναγωνιστής Αυγενάκης). Προφανώς τα χρήματα που έδωσε δεν είναι δικά της (δεν είναι δα κάνα κορόιδο) αλλά νομίζω πως όλοι μπορούμε να συνεισφέρουμε από λίγα cent προκειμένου η υπουργός να εργάζεται σε ένα περιβάλλον που της ταιριάζει. Στο κάτω κάτω μιλάμε για μια Όλγα Κεφαλογιάννη με τ’ όνομα. Μια πολιτική προσωπικότητα η οποία δεν αξίζει τίποτα λιγότερο από το καλύτερο και το ακριβότερο. Τουλάχιστον αν δεν θέλουμε να είμαστε αχάριστοι απέναντι σε κάποια που έχει τόσα προσφέρει στον τόπο (δεν ξέρω ακριβώς τι αλλά είμαι σίγουρος ό,τι έχει προσφέρει πολλά αλλιώς δεν θα κοσμούσε με την παρουσία της τόσα υπουργικό συμβούλια).

Όμως όλα τα παραπάνω δεν έχουν καμία σημασία από τη στιγμή που τα χρήματα που «σπαταλήθηκαν» για την αγορά των δύο περσικών χαλιών από τη Δέσποινα τη Μοιραράκη δεν πετάχτηκαν στον αέρα. Όπως ίσως έχετε διαβάσει τα χαλιά αυτά δεν είναι της υπουργού. Είναι περιουσία του ελληνικού λαού. Είναι χαλιά τα οποία ανήκουν σε όλους τους Έλληνες και όλες τις Ελληνίδες. Πρόκειται για μια εθνική επένδυση αφού όλοι καταλαβαίνουμε την αξία που θα έχουν αποκτήσει αυτά τα χαλιά από τη στιγμή που θα τα έχουν πατήσει οι γόβες της Όλγας της Κεφαλογιάννη με το όνομα. Σκεφτείτε το ποσό που μπορεί να δοθεί σε έναν πλειστηριασμό για ένα μόνο τετραγωνικό μέτρο χαλιού που πάτησε η υπουργός τουρισμού. Αν μάλιστα η ίδια διαβεβαιώσει πως περπατούσε και ξυπόλητη πάνω στα χαλιά τότε το πόσο μπορεί να εκτοξευθεί.

Καταλαβαίνω πως η πρώτη σας αντίδραση κάθε φορά που πέφτετε πάνω σε μια τέτοια είδηση είναι να φωνάξετε «βρε τους θεομπαίχτες», καταλαβαίνω ότι σκέφτεστε πως το να ξοδεύει τόσο δημόσιο χρήμα ένας υπουργός για τα χαλιά του γραφείου του είναι ενδεικτικό της αντίληψης που έχει για τη διαχείριση του δημόσιου χρήματος, αλλά αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι δεν καταλαβαίνετε την ανταποδοτική και επενδυτική διάσταση των εξόδων αυτών. Ξεστραβωθείτε λοιπόν και φωνάξτε: Χαίρε Όλγα Κεφαλογιάννη με τ’ όνομα και τα χαλια σου (χωρίς τόνο για να τον βάλετε όπου θέλετε). Οι φορολογούμενοι σε χαιρετούν και σε πληρώνουν.

ΥΓ – Σε ανακοίνωση του το υπουργείο μας ενημερώνει ότι «Η βελτίωση των χώρων υποδοχής κρίνεται αναγκαία για τη διασφάλιση της άριστης φιλοξενίας και εξυπηρέτησης των επισκεπτών, στο πλαίσιο δράσεων και εργασιών για την προώθηση του ελληνικού τουρισμού, καθώς και για την ανάδειξη της θετικής εικόνας της χώρας μας σε διεθνές επίπεδο» και όλοι καταλαβαίνουμε ότι φιλοξενία και εξυπηρέτηση αν το χαλί δεν κάνει 781 ευρώ το τετραγωνικό δεν μπορείς να προσφέρεις.

Hello I have a question.

I know you are very very passionate about respect on culture (as you should be) but I wanted to ask a question about wording. I don’t feel like I ever know what to call myself as someone who believes in the gods, because I do not want to encroach on the words and terms that Greek people use to describe themselves. I started believing when I visited Greece when I was younger. It just felt right and talking to people where I visited was very enlightening, but I was never truly given knowledge of a term of what to call myself that doesn’t step on cultural boundaries.

(An aside question, do you think Greek would be a hard language to learn for an English native? It would be my fifth language, and I’m very interested in trying to learn.)

Hii! Perhaps you have seen this post and this post about terms! Perhaps not, so I am leaving it here for good measure! "Hellenic Polytheist" feels okay at the moment but, tbh, you can just say "Polytheist".

In Greek we don't use "pagan" the way the west uses it (I think it was imported in our vocab from the west to begin with) so we just say "Dodekatheist" or "Polytheist". Mainly "Polytheist", because "Dodekatheist" sometimes has an implication that you recognize the Twelve gods only. (Not always! But some Greeks might understand just this).

I think every time I spoke with a Greek Polytheist they just said "I worship our ancient gods". They didn't have one name for every person who worships the Greek gods, perhaps except "Polytheist" which in our language literally means "person who worships multiple gods". Sometimes these people are part of ritualistic and philosophical circles so they just say "I belong to this group where we worship the ancient gods."

(If anyone has a different experience with Greek Polytheists lmk! This is only my experience)

On to the language part, it won't be too difficult. It will be difficult since Greek is more complicated than English in many grammatic aspects, and it's a new philosophy of language, but there's not a very big linguistic gap. There are at least 50.000 Greek words you're using in your English vocabulary so this might help with learning more of the language. I think it will be worth your time to start learning!

The process takes years but it's achievable and you will be able to understand stuff pretty quickly. If you have knowledge of Spanish use the accent and some grammar stuff, which are very similar to Greek.

And, last but not least, as I wrote in another ask, you don’t need to use the ancient forms of Greek words in your worship. We still use these words, so you can use their sliiiightly different 2023 forms. No deity will judge you if you use the Greek terms of our times 😁 Better use χαίρε instead of γεια σας when addressing a god but there's zero reason to use χάρις instead of χάρη - especially if the rest of your speech is not equally archaic. Sooo the Greek in use is the way to go 😁
