Hello MDX, any thoughts on the recent files? (1123-1125)
File 1123-1125 Review
The case was overall quite entertaining. It was mostly lighthearted and ended on a very safe and non-action-heavy manner despite how it started off. It had funny moments with Chihaya as well, due to her very forward personality. I found it especially funny how she casually expected Sato & Takagi to take responsibility for DB after insisting that they remain involved (File 1123).
It was nice to get a very detailed tutorial from Gosho of making a wing-flapping bat airplane (that he so proudly wanted the fans to try out according to his Sherry soliloquy), and it was fittingly incorporated into the case with Shiori's kidnapping (File 1125).
There were otherwise no major developments in both Juugo's and Takagi's romance plots, and we ended on a similar note as in the previous Juugo-Chihaya case with Takagi & Sato (File 1087), where Juugo is bothered by her meddling with Takagi and Sato gets very jealous, and as per usual classic anime trope, violently takes out her jealousy on poor Takagi (File 1125).
The most important part of this case was of course the ending with Conan discovering that Mitsuhiko was tricked into wearing a hidden surveillance camera that was spying on DB, only to be revealed to us readers that it was Amuro all along, following his orders of investigating Edogawa Conan for the mysterious Falcon Elder (File 1125).
It looks like Gosho intends to focus on this ongoing subplot immediately, rather than leaving it in the background, seeing as he decided to end us on this cliffhanger. There is therefore a higher chance that he intends to resolve this plot much earlier than one might have expected. Considering that we have been teased by last week's magazine preview that we will be getting a Café Poirot case with Amuro + Masumi, it's highly possible that the next case will further build on his investigation and ultimately resolve with Amuro giving the Falcon elder some sort of report (at this rate, at latest in the next Amuro case after upcoming one).
Of course, I don't expect there to be any major consequences of this regardless of what Amuro decides to do, since as previously mentioned in my Boss suspect theory post, I believe that the Falcon elder is just a Boss mislead that is in reality FPM Ōoka (Momiji's grandpa) who is investigating Conan because of his close relationship with Suzuki Jirokichi (his conglomerate rival).
I'm however very much looking forward to the upcoming case and what developments we will get with yet another Masumi (Akai family) & Bourbon interaction case, as well as if Mary will somehow be fitted into it, and also especially when you take into account that both Boss suspects (Vader & Falcon Elder) are hounding both of them. Could be the perfect opportunity to have both mysterious geezers appear again in this case in some shape or form (and even better if they sense each other’s presence).

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (Japanese: 月岡 芳年, also named Taiso Yoshitoshi 大蘇 芳年, 30 April 1839 – 9 June 1892)
Hanai Oume Killing Minekichi
Tsukioka Yoshitosh is widely recognized as the last great master of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock printing and painting. He is also regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras – the last years of Edo period Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in new things from the rest of the world, but over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many aspects of traditional Japanese culture, among them traditional woodblock printing.
By the end of his career, Yoshitoshi was in an almost single-handed struggle against time and technology. As he worked on in the old manner, Japan was adopting Western mass reproduction methods like photographyand lithography. Nonetheless, in a Japan that was turning away from its own past, he almost singlehandedly managed to push the traditional Japanese woodblock print to a new level, before it effectively died with him.
His life is perhaps best summed up by John Stevenson:
Yoshitoshi's courage, vision and force of character gave ukiyo-e another generation of life, and illuminated it with one last burst of glory.
— John Stevenson, Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, 1992
His reputation has only continued to grow, both in the West, and among younger Japanese, and he is now almost universally recognized as the greatest Japanese artist of his era.
Hanai Oume Killing Minekichi 1887
Ιn Tokyo of 1887 a young woman practising as a geisha in Shinbashi named Oume (お梅). She had been born in 1863 to a poor samurai family, who gave her up for adoption when she was six years old. A few years later she was sold to a geisha house. Through a combination of good looks, hard work, and luck, at age 23 Oume-san had managed to save enough money to open her own ochya: "Suigetsu," or "The Drunken Moon."
The business did quite well, and things were looking bright. She even had enough money to hire a young man named Yasugi Minekichi as a "hakoya" to run errands. But Oume-san soon realized that her hakoya -- and her own father -- were both skimming profits for themselves. They had also begun scheming to seize Oume-san's ochaya. Since woman had almost no property rights at the time, she had been forced to register the business under her father's name. Now it was clear that he and the hakoya thought the profits were theirs, too. All her years of bitter, hard labor were now disappearing into the pockets of these two men.
On the evening of June 9, 1887 she stood waiting with a kitchen knife in the shadows outside The Drunken Moon. When Yasugi-san arrived, they argued, and increasingly enraged, she stabbed him. Yasugi-san ran off, but died soon thereafter of his wound.
Oume-san turned herself in, and was put on trial. It became the most sensational case in a generation. Newspapers kept readers up to date with every detail. Though the trial only lasted a few days, one of the leading Tokyo papers printed 88 stories. Crowds jammed the courthouse, and those unable to find a seat threw rocks through the windows in irritation. There were even popular woodblock prints for sale, including our image for today, showing the murder.
The case aroused a good deal of sympathy for the wronged geisha, including help from a star defence attorney named Ōoka Ikuzō. Famed for taking on "hopeless" cases, he argued for temporary insanity, which would save her from capital punishment. Ōoka-san painted a compelling, sympathetic case about her long years of abandonment and suffering, and the judge decided on life in prison rather than the death penalty.
Oume-san spent the next 15 years in prison, and was pardoned and released in 1903 when she was forty. Her case continued to attract widespread interest. She was the subject of two films, one in 1926 and another just three years later, and she also made money on the lecture circuit telling about her life, her crime, and her reformation and new life as a restaurant owner. Newspapers ran serialized stories, and there was even a kabuki play. "A chance mistake," she wrote in a book about her life, "resulted in sixteen years of grief and hardship."

Hello MDX, do you intend to do a review of Movie 27? What are your thoughts on it? And by the way, what do you expect of the August Naniwa case?
I have not watched Movie 27 yet, since it's not available where I live, but if I have a lot to say about this highest-grossing DC film, I'll post something about it.
File 1129-1133 Predictions
As for the upcoming Osaka case, the main thing I'm definitely expecting is for Heiji and/or Kazuha to finally relay their romantic feelings to one another. It's gonna be a 5-chapter long case, so I do expect a serial murder, similar to Crimson School Trip (ShinRan confession/reply case), and of course, we can't have the Osaka duo appear without the Kyoto duo, especially after Momiji recently implied that she shouldn't wait any longer and start acting in File 1018.
I also expect that we get more Muga development/hints about his character and past, especially now, when we're potentially reaching the climax of Momiji's romantic endeavor and where we will only be left with the main plot-relevant side of his to progress (like Iori's Public Security past with Kuroda and his potential big secret identity as the main antagonist of this arc). This could mean that we might also get Kuroda interactions in the upcoming case (whether as a flashback or not), which is always a treat.
Gosho alluded to the appearance of "an important person who has remained mysterious up until now" in the upcoming case, which is very likely to be Kazuha's mother. This will also mean that we will finally have the official appearance of Heizo, Ginshiro & Shizuka (Heiji's parents and Kazuha's father) in Rum arc (who as of yet still hasn't appeared since Bourbon arc), which is clearly overdue.
If Kazuha's mother is finally getting introduced, then we could also get Momiji's parent(s) introduced, which would also bring forth more Ōoka household dynamics reveals, potential Haneda family-relation development and Former prime minister exposition (that could further hint to that he is the mysterious Falcon Elder).
If Gosho wanted to high-gear into the main plot as the following case after this, then it's also possible that Gosho could have Shinichi get involved in the case to aid Heiji, which could potentially tip off any unsuspecting observers (like Iori) of Shinichi's whereabouts and start Rum's Shinichi hunt in the awaited Rum climax soon after this case ends. For now, we only have Heiji, Kazuha, Ran and Conan confirmed as the cast of the upcoming chapter (according to AC). We'll have to wait for more teasers, but couldn't be more excited for what's to come.

Hey bro, any thoughts on the latest files with Heiji and the monks? What about that easter egg for the next case, regarding that long lost detective that will be back, is Gosho hinting at Saguru? Or just Shinichi? Do you think the next files could be Rum arc resolution?
File 1116-1118 Review
I enjoyed the case a lot overall. Already starting from File 1116, Ran was getting a proactive role in the Heizuha romance plot, which I found so refreshing and endearing (since Ran has gotten so sidelined lately).
The whole monk themed case was a such a nostalgia trip as well, and I love how Gosho also gave our other Mouri, Kogoro, a proactive role in the case, showcasing once again his judo moves.
As for the Heizuha confession build up, that started since File 1113 (Muga shinkansen case), contrary to my expectations, it still didn't pay off in any way, as Heiji once again failed due to forgetfullness (File 118), despite Ran's efforts.
What however made this quite disappointing was that even the Hyakunin isshu tournament setup from the previous case was also resolved off-screen and didn't remain as a potential plot-thread to a future official confession case setting. However, that very same Momiji scene that resolved the tournament setup also gave a teaser/foreshadowing to Momiji potentially starting to act more actively towards her romantic goals with Heiji. She referenced a Hyakunin isshu poem that bears a similar message to "time is money", where she mentions that time can easily pass by in the blink of an eye if one keeps acting indecisive (File 1118), as if she is planning on officially making her move soon.
This could be Gosho still building on the confession-anticipation momentum from the this and the previous case, and that the next upcoming case could still tie into the Ōoka/Heizuha subplot in some way as the official confession case approaches. If not, then it will truly feel like Gosho wasted an actual opportunity of building up tension towards an eventual confession.
As for the teaser of a long lost detective finally reappearing in the next case, it does fit with the idea of it being Hakuba Saguru (who fans have kept nagging Gosho about when he will return in DC). This also fits with the AC teaser that he will be drawing a vertical double-spread magazine cover featuring Kid.
While this may seem as an immediate confirmation that it will be a Kid case and that there will be no further Heizuha/Ooka material in the next case, there is still potential that Gosho is actually planning on intertwining them again, like in Fairy's lips case (File 1018-1021) & Queen's bangs case (If the falcon elder is Former prime minister [FPM] Ōoka). This is due to Gosho also promoting M27, which is a Heizuha-Kid Movie, in the same magazine as the double-spread, and he also teased in another AC that he will be drawing the Naniwa (Osaka) duo in the poster art for M27.
In other words, there is still hope that Momiji's teaser in the latest chapter bares importance in the following Kid case. Also, if the ongoing speculation that the falcon motif seen with the Falcon elder belongs to the Ōoka family and that they are related to Hakuba Saguru (who has his own Falcon pet) is true, then this upcoming Kid/Hakuba case would further be inviting more Ōoka/Heizuha material (that potentially keeps the Heizuha plot streak going).
While not impossible, these AC teasers does lessen the chance of us getting Rum climax in the upcoming case, unless the teased detective was meant to be Shinichi all along (which I currently feel is unlikely, since Crimson School Trip did not happen too long ago).

Hey MDX, in Vol. 24, at the end of the Haido Hotel case, we are told the BO had the whole Nomiguchi family gone missing after the latter's murder, along with Pisco's house being burned to ashes. The BO never leaves any traces behind. So why was the Haneda family spared by them?
Probably because Kohji wasn't someone that was affiliated with the BO to begin with (where he could have shared dangerous information to his family). He was collateral damage from the murder of Amanda Hughes (File 948). They don’t have any reason to suspect that Kohji knew anything before the day that he was killed about the BO that he could've passed along to his family, unlike Pisco's and Nomiguchi's, so the family are not potential threats that needed to get eliminated.
However, it is very likely that the Haneda family are being surveillanced by the BO/Rum in case they make suspicious moves in response to Kohji's hidden dying message.
I personally suspect that Rum (as Iori) is using his Ōoka affiliation to keep tabs on the Ōoka's close friends, the Haneda family (File 1042).

So now that chapter 1102 is out, what are your thoughts? Could the old hawk man, along with the respirator man drom ch 1090, be Karasuma candidates? If so, that would be a break in pattern, since Rum's storyline isn't over, yet we are already introduced to the "next" set of suspects. How could this overlap in arcs change the rest of the series? And who do you think the first two candidates are, and an eventual third one? Sorry for all the questions, but this is an exciting development ^^
Exactly all these questions you brought up were floating in my mind as well. At first, my first suspicion and prediction for Gosho's introduction of "Vader" (File 1090) was that he was supposed to be a mislead character to build up the Rum plot suspense for the Rum arc climax, which I wrote about in detail in my File 1090 review.
Now however, It's looking very likely with the introduction of a second Boss suspect in File 1102, Falcon Elder (that is very likely another mislead), that Gosho has started setting up the Boss arc plot by already teasing the new arc suspects at this phase of Rum arc.
While it would be the first time that Gosho introduces overarching suspects before the story has shifted focus to the connected antagonist, it is not the first time Gosho introduces characters relevant to the following arc. During Bourbon arc, Gosho introduced Haneda Shuukichi and "Sister outside the territory", who ended up being very relevant characters in Rum arc.
Just as you suggested, I also suspect that we will get a third Boss suspect eventually, to follow Gosho's 3-suspect pattern at the very least (though it doesn't have stop there ofc).
Boss Suspects' True Identities
As I mentioned in my previous post about "Vader" below, I suspect that he is Haneda Yasuharu, since he has both reasons to find the police incompetent (File 1090), due to failing to catch his son's killer, as well as for him to recognize Mary and protect her from getting exposed publically through the news (File 1096-1097), since he is Tsutomu's friend.
As for the newly introduced Falcon Elder, who is clearly being framed to be Karasuma Renya through his Crow-resembling Falcon pet, he was revealed to have some kind of anger towards someone connected to the recent Kid Killer News with Conan & Jirokichi photo in it, since he used his staff to crack the phone showing it (File 1102).
After thinking through all the possibilities, I think it makes the most sense that Falcon Elder's true identity is the Ōoka retiree, Momiji's Grandpa who was acquainted with Haneda & Kuroda (who was also foreshadowed in File 1088).
He is the only mysterious rich old man that we haven't been introduced to. Also, in the M21 guidebook, Gosho revealed that the Ōoka family are a rich family just like the Suzuki's, only that Sonoko's uncle Jirokichi is slightly richer.
This could be setup and cause for some intense rivalry between Ōoka retiree & Jirokichi, where Ōoka retiree could be harboring ill feelings out of jealousy towards Jirokichi, who keeps getting more publicity and gaining more wealth. This would explain why he cracked his phone with Jirokichi's photo open out of anger (that is meant to mislead us into thinking his target was Conan).
If we also were to get a Rum twist in the upcoming climax where Rum ends up indeed being Iori Muga in disguise, then him appearing with Falcon Elder could be the ultimate misleading suspicion booster for Falcon Elder being the boss (when he could in reality be the head of the Ōoka family that Muga is a butler for).
Further speculations on Falcon Elder can be found in my review of File 1113-1115.
To summarize my speculations, we now have three silhouetted rich old figures, and their identities are:

What you think of Oooka girl ?
I am very much a fan of Ōoka Momiji's character. She has felt like breath of fresh air (due to her uniqueness) in Rum arc, as well as for the stereotypical character role that she plays.
It's very rare for Gosho to introduce a Holmes-like female detective as it is, but to also combine that personality with a Sonoko-like rich girl personality with a lot of financial power is such an interesting recipe for intrigue and surprises. Since her intro, she has done nothing but carried an aura of mystery around her and her family, together with her already-shady butler, and every time she appears, I always get excited to see in what other ways Gosho will demonstrate her cunning and intelligent nature.
I also appreciate her friendly relationship with Ran a lot and it shows that she is ultimately a very sweet girl at heart that gets along with everyone, rather than falling into the stereotype love rival trope that is polarized and treated as a mean girl by everyone.
Of course, since she plays the role of a love rival, similarly to Shiratori, she has her own character journey to go through (where she realizes that she has to let go of her childhood fantasies) but in my opinion, Gosho has made her character fascinating and likeable enough already that even beyond that point, she is gonna keep staying as one of my favorite new characters.

What's your opinion on Kuroda Hyoue being the disguised Tsutomu Akai?
I think it would make his character even more interesting, but if he isn't I don't know where and who Tsutomu could be.
And if he is did he meet his kids? I think he met Sera but I am not sure.
"Kuroda Hyoue = Akai Tsutomu" Theory (Updated)
This is my current speculation on Kuroda Hyoue's identity, I will keep it updated as we get new developments.
I think that Kuroda Hyoue is indeed Akai Tsutomu's current identity. Kuroda shares many similarities with Akai Tsutomu and especially his son (Akai Shuuichi). They both have similar fashion sense, with a contrasting white-coloured tie to a dark shirt and a brown overlay, and when it comes to Shuuichi, we got visual cues where they not only stood the same way with hands in their pocket, but also demonstrated the same leg sweep technique (File 989 & 1016), which is most likely intended to indicate that they share the same martial arts (Jeet Kune Do) that Akai Tsutomu was revealed to have mastered (File 1099 & SDB 90+).
Kuroda was also especially interested in the Kohji case, to the point of seemingly noticing a dying message-like name in the news (File 980 & 987). This fits with Akai Tsutomu's interest, that started after Haneda Kohji's father (Haneda Yasuharu), who is Tsutomu's friend, requested that he solved his son's murder (File 1037).
Here is how I currently suspect he turned from a seemingly deceased MI6 agent from Britain to a member of the NPA's Public Security in Japan in the last 17 years.
We know from File 1048-1049 that Tsutomu had a confrontation with Vermouth 17 years ago after his investigation on the Kohji case, and that clash lead to him being presumed dead by the BO. We then learned in File 1099 that Wakasa and a "monster" (Rum) was involved in what potentially was that same incident that lead to his presumed death 17 years ago.
As I speculated before, I think that Tsutomu's investigation lead him to finding out that Kohji's dying message revealed "Karasuma" to be the culprit, and that the prime suspect Asaka is innocent. I think that Rum found out about Tsutomu's investigation and baited him to a location using Vermouth, who disguised as "the innocent bodyguard Asaka" and carried Kohji's shogi piece charm as proof to convince him. Before going to the meeting location, Tsutomu warned his family about making enemies with bad people and told them to move to Japan, so that his family's whereabouts aren't discovered (File 972), in case he doesn't survive the planned meeting with "Asaka" (similar to Mary's contingency plan of having Masumi contact MI6 about fake Tsutomu in case Mary didn't make it back in File 1049).
That lead to Tsutomu finger jabbing Rum's left eye (as hinted by Gosho in the OdaxAoyama interview and File 972) and ultimately getting defeated by Rum after letting his guard down around Vermouth (Fake Asaka/Wakasa).
I suspect that Tsutomu's confrontation with them lead to him surviving (like Mary) and changing his identity and appearance (likely through plastic surgery). Afterwards, to pursue the organization further, it makes sense that he would have moved to Japan, where the culprit(s) "Karasuma" originate from, just like the other overseas agents (i.e Hondou Ethan from the CIA). Just like Mary, who got ahold of a fake pass to fly to Japan (revealed by Gosho in SDB 100+), Tsutomu had also gotten ahold of a fake pass with the alias "Kuroda Hyoue".
I think that he then decided to investigate the Karasuma Group/Black Organization, by becoming a public security officer of the Japanese police (in order to extract information easier, as referenced in File 1033).
In order to get a pass into the police academy in Japan (disregarding of his blank background), I suspect that Kuroda/Tsutomu secretly relied on his relationship with the head of the Ōoka Group (who is currently retired) that was revealed in File 1088, similar to how his friend Haneda Yasuharu did in File 1039-1042.
The Ōoka family has been shown and hinted to have great influence and connections with people in high positions, like the Tokyo governor (File 992), making them more than capable of helping Kuroda/Tsutomu join the japanese police.
In other words, the same time as his eldest son started to work towards becoming an FBI agent 17 years ago (File 972), Kuroda started to work towards getting accepted by the National Police Agency (File 913). He then built himself up and became what I think is the backstage administrator of the NPA's security planning division (who recieves all the classified reports of their NOC:s), all within 7 years.
Seven years later (since his disappearance), Kuroda/Tsutomu has made a name for himself within the NPA and has diligently kept his safe distance from his family, but before the status quo with his family could change, an incident took place around 10 years ago, that lead to his 10-year-long coma (File 914). We recently learned that Iori Muga, the current butler of the Ōoka family, was a former coworker of Kuroda within the Public Security, who went with the alias "Sakakibara" while undercover, which was likely before Kuroda's 10-year coma (File 1090).
I think that what lead to Kuroda's burn-scar-causing and right-eye-losing incident 10 years ago was that Iori Muga (who is actually Rum's true appearance) deemed Kuroda as a threatening and formidable enemy to the black organization. He therefore secretly orchestrated the incident that made Kuroda fall into a coma. Kuroda's hair colour changed due to the stress of the incident (his hair was perhaps shaved off for surgery purposes and white hair grew instead) and he didn't wake up until 10 years later (File 914).
I suspect that when Kuroda/Tsutomu woke up from his coma, he suffered actual memory loss to an extent, which is why he was perceived to have become a different person (As Yui mentioned). This concept was already foreshadowed as a possibility through Vermouth's disguise cover story when she faced Mary as Tsutomu (File 1048).
This would also explain why Kuroda immediately reacted to Wakasa Rumi in the news in File 980, while also still acting unaware of her identity as if he is trying to confirm suspicions of her being a criminal tied to the Kohji case in File 987-989, despite potentially having met her 17 years ago as Tsutomu. The amnesia could have made him forget her potential role in his demise 17 years ago, but he still found her familiar enough to the point of investigating her and making the connection between her name and Kohji's dying message.
While he may have forgotten significant things from his life as Tsutomu, his goal to take down the BO and find out who Kohji's killer is hasn't changed. Although the NPA had him move to Nagano to ease back into his work (before he moved to Tokyo MPD as the new superintendent), I think they gave Kuroda permission to still keep his Backstage administrator role active and stay in contact with their NOC ("Bourbon"/Furuya Rei) by Kuroda's request (File 1017).

Any ideas for File 1100? What can we expect?
My main prediction is that just like how we got ShinRan developing case (Crimson School Trip) in the file 1000 milestone, we will finally get the official Heizuha confession case in this next 100-chapter milestone. We are also currently in volume 103, and Gosho has consistently given us Momiji-Iori cases every 5 volumes since Iori's introduction (vol 93: Iori intro + Kendo case -> vol 98: Momiji's challenge -> vol 103: ?).
Also, Momiji actively seperated Heiji and Kazuha only twice so far (File 1042 & 1088), so third time would fit to be the charm, where Momiji fails and the confession successfully happens.
Just like in File 1000-1005, where it lead to main plot progression (Rum seeing Shinichi on the news), the same could happen with a Heizuha confession case involving Ōoka family, since they are connected to the Haneda and Kuroda, and "Vader" (mysterious old man) could also get involved with his driver, since he was also in the previous Ōoka case in Kyoto and could be connected to them as well.
We could also get Conan finally sharing Rum and Kohji case information with Heiji and have them discuss it, which has been way overdue. We got a tease of it in File 1069, where Conan started reaching out a little by trying to get second opinion without revealing too much, so a long Heiji-centric case is the perfect timing for it to properly happen.
