Mimosa Echard Biography
Mimosa Echard is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice troubles the distinction between nature and culture. Echard combines organic and synthetic materials to question the binary divide between nature and technology, exploring the complex interchanges that take place between the human body and our material environment.
Mimosa Echard was born in Alès, a region in the south of France with a history of communal living. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 2010.
Much of the material that makes up Echard's assemblages are objects and plants she has collected along her travels, exchanged with her friends, or gathered from her home region. iDeath, an exhibition at Paris' Galerie Samy Abraham in 2016, counterposed the communal traditions of Alès against the trappings of contemporary life. It features works such as 'A/B', a series of wall-mounted plexiglass containers displaying botanical and manufactured medicines that spread and intermingle beneath the plastic.
Mimosa Echard's work is preoccupied with the lives of materials, whether the cultural associations brought to them by the viewer or the organic processes by which they grow, mutate, or decompose. In LUCA (2019), an installation made in collaboration with French artist Michel Blazy, large fabric hangings emblazoned with cultural images appear to be overcome by wet, spore-like incursions.

Christine Mathieu is an artist based in Montreuil, France. Fusing an ethnographic with an aesthetic approach, Mathieu weaves connections across ancient and contemporary cultures, in search for what makes us human. Her work, which combines sculpture, textile, photography and performance, reveals an interest in the shapes and objects that have transcended time (the headdress, parure, mask, bowl, etc), and which she interrogates as repositories of ancient skills and traditions.
Mathieu was born in the Jura mountains to an embroiderer mother and a stonemason father. She went on to study in Paris in the photography section at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, from which she graduated in 1984 with an award from Polaroid. After a three-year professional residency at the American Center in Paris, Mathieu launched her own graphic design studio, l’épicerie, that focused on developing signage design, scenography and visual identities for institutions dedicated to the preservation of history and heritage.
The photographs of the traditional headdresses are taken in the reserves of the MUCEM in Marseille and the Muséon Arlaten in Arles.

Anri Sala is a contemporary Albanian artist known for his psychologically resonant film and video projects. In his work Answer Me (2008), Sala explores how sound paired with images can affect our ability to perceive both space and time while also conjuring memories. “I am interested in things told through images but not always through languages,” he has explained. “I tend to replace language as the most popular means of telling. When images tell things, they can always keep an ambiguity.” Born in 1974 in Tirana, Albania, he studied painting in his hometown at the National Academy of Arts. Sala went on to attend the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and participating in the 1999 Venice Biennale with his work Intervista—Finding the Words (1998). Over the following decades, the artist has continued to confront formal issues of the media he uses and the affect video, film, and sound can have on nostalgia. He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Today, Sala’s works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others.

Pierre Alechinsky, Negative and Positive, 1960, Ink on paper mounted on canvas.
Born on October 19, 1927, in Brussels, Pierre Alechinsky grew up with varied artistic interests that included graphic techniques, folk art, and medieval book illustrations. From 1944 to 1948 he studied art at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture et des arts décoratifs (La cambre), Brussels. Alechinsky joined the group Jeune Peinture Belge (also known as Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst, young Belgian painters, 1945–48) and had his first solo exhibition in the Galerie Lou Cosyn, Brussels, in 1947.
During a stay in Paris in 1948, he was deeply impressed by the work of Jean Dubuffet and Max Ernst, feeling particularly drawn to the former’s Art Brut. In March 1949, Alechinsky Pierre visited an exhibition featuring artists from the Cobra group (1948–51) at the Séminaire des arts, an experience that would have a lasting effect. Formed by painters from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, the movement distinguished itself through bold, expressive compositions inspired by folk and children’s art, as well as by the work of Paul Klee and Joan Miró.

JOUR 209 - La légèreté, Catherine Meurisse
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/636c0dbb5722a84692704027ca3ac281/tumblr_inline_pcncbsith01vw2233_540.jpg)
