Varnargarðar by Hugi Ólafsson In 1995 an avalanche fell on the town of Flateyri in the Westfjords in Iceland, killing 20 people. It is the deadliest natural disaster in Iceland in recent decades. In its wake massive protective ridges were set up above the village in order to protect the settlement against future threats. In 1999 a big avalanche fell but was successfully diverted by the ridges, proving their usefulness.

Chasing the elusive northern lights

Yesterday evening I left my home in Ísafjörður around 8pm to scout for northern lights.  According to the forecast here: https://www.vedur.is/vedur/spar/nordurljos/ (which I check every day, pretty much), a fair amount of activity could be expected. I arrived in the nearby fjord Önundarfjörður, (pictured above) just before dark. I took some long exposures while I waited, and after a while,  faint streaks of color began to appear in the photos (not really visible to the naked eye). 

I stood around for another hour, hoping for the faint green glow to morph into an explosion of color across the sky. This did not happen, but the lights were bright enough to create some very pretty pictures, so that was ok.

Eventually it got too cloudy so I drove over to Súgandafjörður, where it was even cloudier and way too dark.  I decided to clamber down to the waters edge and attempt some long exposures, but they weren’t really working out (they’re pretty noisy, and I had the hardest time focusing properly, because it was so dark). 

Also, the sea over there was the opposite of smooth (thought it appears that way due to the 5 minute exposure), with the tide coming in and waves crashing at my feet. So even if there had been some crazy lights, the reflection would have been missing.  I’m a sucker for those reflections.  I decided to call it a night and head home. I stopped for a bit at the ski area above town (not open yet) for a few more pictures. Still no dramatic lights happening. 

I arrived back in town after midnight, but rather than go straight home I stopped at the gas station to make a quick phone call. I glanced up at the sky and that's when it finally happened.  As has happened countless times before, the aurora almost seem to be alive, waiting until I’m completely unprepared to finally make their dramatic appearance.  It’s uncanny really, how this seems to be a universal rule of sorts. I raced over to the beach below town, nearly tripping on the rocks in my haste to set up the tripod before the show ended. Unexpectedly, it lasted nearly 20 minutes. Or more. One tends to lose track of time under these circumstances.  Took way too many pictures, completely mesmerized by the spectacle above me.  Here are some of them:

Nowadays, with its 200 inhabitants, it is the biggest settlement in the Önundarfjörður. The mountains surrounding the village are awe-inspiring, but they have a dark side.
