Bodegas Marqués de Riscal, Spain
Marqués de Riscal (whose full trading name is Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, S.A.) is a Spanish business group dedicated to the wine industry. It has its origin and headquarters in the town of Elciego, in the Rioja Alavesa, where it began its activity in 1858, being the oldest winery in Álava.
In 2006 the wineries of Elciego were transformed into the City of Wine, a complex that includes the primary wineries, the most modern, the vineyards and a leisure complex in which the Hotel Marqués de Riscal is framed, an emblematic building designed by the architect Frank Gehry and inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I.
Since its origin in the nineteenth century, Marqués de Riscal has produced Rioja wine, but in 1972 it also settled in Rueda (Valladolid) to produce white wine that in 1980 would receive the denomination of origin of Rueda wine.
The company's wine production sits on a vast expanse of vineyards owned by the company and others on a rental basis. Marqués de Riscal owns in the Rioja area 1500 ha of vineyards in Elciego, Leza, Laguardia and Villabuena de Álava, of which 500 ha are owned and 985 controlled. In the area of Rueda, it has the largest vineyard owned in the entire D.O., with 205 ha in the municipality of Rueda. It also has 250 ha more for rent in Rueda, La Seca, Serrada and Rodilana. In addition, it has 200 ha in the Zamorano municipalities of Toro and San Román de Hornija, from which it produces reds from the land of Castilla y León.

Archaeologists Discover Traces of 5,000 Seat Roman Circus in Spain
Archaeologists from ARKIKUS have announced the discovery of a Roman circus at Iruña-Veleia, a former Roman town in Hispania, now located in the province of Álava, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain.
The town was an important transit centre on the Ab Asturica Burdigalam (Roman road), with a peak population of around 10,000 inhabitants.
In a recent study using aerial photography and light detection and ranging (LiDAR), archaeologists have found a Roman circus and previously unknown urban areas of Iruña-Veleia.

A Roman circus was a large open-air venue used mainly for chariot races, although sometimes serving other purposes. Chariot racing was the most popular of many subsidised public entertainments, and was an essential component in several religious festivals.
Chariot racing declined in significance in the Western Roman Empire following the fall of Rome, with the last known race held at the Circus Maximus in AD 549, organised by the Ostrogothic king, Totila.
According to a press statement by ARKIKUS, the circus is an elongated enclosure that accommodated up to 5,000 spectators, and measures 280 metres long by 72 metres wide.

Until now, only a handful of Roman circus’s are known in the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula, emphasizing the importance of Iruña-Veleia during the Roman period.
The study also revealed a Roman street system, evidence of buildings with porticoed areas, and a linear feature indicating the route of the Ab Asturica Burdigalam.

El Sotillo Trikuharria Burial Chamber, Spain (No. 1)
El Sotillo is a rock in Leza, in Rioja Alavesa, on the border with the municipality of Laguardia. Like other tricularis around it, it was built at the end of the Neolithic or at the beginning of the Chalcolithic. It is part of the megalithic station of Alabar Rioja. The bodies found there have offered various results, in the field of ancient genetics.
It is a corridor-type megalithic tomb. The tomb is an oval chamber (3.30 m x 2.90 m), and has nine slabs, one of which is 2.29 meters high. The corridor (0.60 m wide, 1.30 m high) is limited by five slabs. Around the monument is a mound made of earth and small stones, with a diameter of about 18 meters. The track to get there cuts a part of the mound itself.
