   It’s somewhat telling - that she won’t commit to an apartment; a little birdhouse where the rest of the flock likes to settle down. No, whenever she, or he, wants to meet like this, it’s always in a hotel room. A liminal space. She keeps her loyalties thin, on purpose.

   But, more and more, she looks forward to returning to where these people roost. Where Miles waits for her. Where he is, all warm hands and soft grins, smoothing her ruffled feathers and calming her racing mind.

   His fingers close around the crook of her arm in the midst of her single-minded bustling, fastidiously and efficiently re-checking the room to make sure she’s packed early enough to be so on time for the flight.

   Her mind splits between thank you and let go, idiot, I’ll be late to being early. But there’s no time to voice either, as she’s pressed against him, face between his shoulder and his warm neck, peppered with stubble.

   She makes a face very few have seen, safely sheltered by his body - brows hitch up, forming a furrow, lower lip juts, eyes dampen, a strange strong feeling blooms in her chest. She moves her head so that she can feel the pulse in his throat against her forehead. It messes up her hair, but, for once, she doesn’t care. Dropping her bag, she squeezes the fabric of his t-shirt between her fingers. What does one say when one is loved like this for the first time in one’s life...?

   “I w--” Her voice gives out momentarily. She swallows, and lets herself feel every strong and gentle inch of him against her, melting and re-forming, grounding. “I will call you before take-off.”
