        Her time in Fort Drakon is a blur of terrible indignities Elspeth is too hollowed out inside to feel. They strip her down to almost nothing and toss her in a cell, and she doesn’t have the strength to be embarrassed. They drag her out again some hours later and she knows she ought to feel afraid. 

        At some point, she must black out from the pain. There’s a rush of blazing heat and then...darkness, and the scent of charred flesh. Elspeth slips gladly into unconsciousness only to be met with gruesome visions: Cousland Castle burning down around her, the Archdemon gnashing its great teeth, blood on her hands, so much blood on her hands. 

        It’s all she knows for some time, until the sound of voices rouses her from her dreams. Ginger lashes flutter against freckled cheeks as she somehow manages to open her eyes. There’s someone picking the lock that binds her left wrist. She blinks wearily. “Zev?” For the first time since throwing down her arms at Cauthrien’s feet, she feels a glimmer of hope. “You came for me.”

Éowyn arched a pale brow at her companion, watching him carefully over the top of her wine goblet. She'd already had two cups, as was evident from the shade of rouge collecting in her cheeks. The White Lady did not often blush, but wherever the wine flowed, a flush would rise. But besides, it was a good night for it. That was why she'd chosen to sit on a barrel outside the Herald's Rest, rather than a chair within.

"I'm sure you think of many women a lot. Men too. And quite often," Éowyn said. Turning her goblet in her hand, she glanced down at the contents and smirked. "I can't imagine how or why I would be special among them."

        Memory comes in flashes, brief yet vivid: The small cold room with its one dirty, papered-over window; the stark contrast to the steel table beneath them growing warm with their body heat and slick with their sweat; the sound of bootheels on a stone floor, slowly circling; the glint of candlelight off the edge of a knife.

        And then, just as suddenly, the images ripple and fade; the bond forged between them and Shadowheart by their mutual parasite falls blessedly dormant once again. Anais does not lift her head until the other squats beside her, only then realizing she'd sunk to the ground. They eye Shadowheart for a moment before accepting the offered waterskin and taking a long drink from it to clear their cottonmouth.

        Passing the waterskin back, Anais pretends not to notice the almost-offered hand, using the wall behind them as leverage to stand instead. "I'm fine," they say, though Shadowheart has not truly asked. "I'll have to be." It's been many years since something managed to spark her worst memories so keenly. "Tell me they stopped to loot the corpse. He'd better have something worth taking."

Anais does not betray much, Shadowheart knows this from just the brief time they've spent together. There is a facade that @thiefscant keeps up and there is an ease to their theatrics that Shadowheart wishes she could emulate. It might be easier on her if she could claim any truth for her own, and she finds herself envying the way masks slide on and off with no issues at all from Anais' face.

"Some thing is wrong..." Shadowheart whispers to herself as her gaze follows the way Anais makes way quickly from the room. The shake of their hands is the only thing that gives Shadowheart a push to follow after Anais.

Anais is already sliding to the ground by the time Shadowheart approaches, only stopping her approach when ordered by the rouge, but the proximity is enough to spark to life that connection wrought between them.

Shadowheart could handle this much.

Just as soon as the visions started they were over and Shadowheart moved closer anyway. She kept her hands to herself before squatting beside the other, waterskin held out. "I know you're... tired," Shadowheart avoids stating the panic evident or talking about the memories, "The others will be out soon and we'll have to move forward. You're going to have to stand back up," there's a suggestion of her holding her hand out, easily ignored if Anais wished it, but there should she want otherwise.

Should all fanfics (with plots, including whump) have definite endings or they just end without resolution? This is mostly because I'm curious & mostly because I'm staring at my huge pile of fic requests & prompts & rewrites & just *wondering*. So what do you think/prefer? I'm not asking "should there always be happy endings" but "should there be an ending at all".

So, I didn’t make any art for Odaiba day because I’m a procrastinator, but I thought I’d tell my story of how I got into Digimon because I think it’s kinda funny and personally I like reading stuff like that so I thought at least one person might get a kick out of it.

Obviously gonna put this below the cut because it's a lil long

I had very very passing awareness of digimon before getting into it, like I knew Agumon but didn’t know its name, and I watched part of a random episode as a kid and didn’t like that they talked for some reason, and that’s as far as my knowledge went. But I had a friend who really liked digimon and really wanted me to get into it.

My first real experience was that friend showing me episode 4 of adventure and I was very alarmed that Biyomon was a digimon and not a Chocobo like I thought.

The episode didn’t really sell the series to me, so I didn’t touch the franchise for another couple of years. I gained more passing knowledge through my friend and loved random digimon I thought were funny, mostly Togemon and Bakemon which I lovingly referred to as the “punching cactus” and “teethy ghost”, respectively.

Cut to my friend finds a V-pet at our local game store, so I bought one too because I always wanted a Tomogachi and thought it’d be fun to make our guys fight.

I loved my little guy! I thought little pixel Pagumon and Garurumon were so cute but had no idea what they actually looked like!

Later still, I had an itch to play a monster collector but wasn’t interested in replaying any of the Pokémon games I already owned, so my friend offered to borrow their copy of Next Order. I thought I’d give it a shot especially since I liked some of the V-pet guys.

Oh boy was that a learning curve. The only other monster collector I played was Pokémon so digimon not being exactly like Pokémon confused my small brain. (Wait, so digimon can evolve into whatever, but they also can’t?) (They have canon evolution lines but they also don’t?) (Turuiemon was just made but Lopmon has been around forever??) (MY SWEET PUNCHING CACTUS EVOLVES INTO A WOMAN WHAT.)

Anyway I enjoyed the game but didn’t really interact with the series much, until my friend and I were bored and threw adventure on in the background because I was like “Oh I know some digimon, it’d be cute to see them animated!”

I did think adventure was cute, but didn’t give it much credit at the time. It wasn’t until we moved on to 02 and I was actively sobbing at the end of Ken’s arc that I was like “Wait what, this is actually good????” And insisted we watch every installment of the franchise.

And now we cut to modern day, I’m sitting with my same friend, sweating and violently scribbling on my tablet with a deranged look in my eye, and they’re asking if I’m drawing Ruli’s friends again.

Oh yeah, and happy Odaiba day!!!!

Just finished watching Kim Possible!

I've gotta admit, that was SO much better than I was expecting. I'd always heard good things about this show, but I never anticipated it to be THAT damn good. Genuinely one of the best cartoons I've seen in awhile and I'm glad I finally got around to watching it!

Something interested I noticed: I was watching this along with two other shows, those being Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, and Digimon Adventure 01 and 02. Out of the three of these, I honestly enjoyed Kim Possible the most. Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V isn't bad by any means, but the plot really drags during the second season - I was honestly glad when the Friendship Cup arc finally ended. As for Digimon Adventure, I'm enjoying it more than I thought, but it's still pretty messy overall.

It was a TON of fun - I adored Kim and Ron's relationship, Drakken is honestly one of the funniest villains I've seen in awhile and he plays off Shego beautifully, the other villains and side characters were wonderful, and there was never a dull episode. I don't think I've ever seen a show with this perfect of a track record. I completely understand why this show is considered one of Disney's best.

And now that I'm done with Kim Possible, I'm moving on to Spy X Family!

My Commentary: This small but significant sequence takes place not long after Koushiro is revealed to be a canon Adoptee. Mrs. Izumi is fully aware that Koushiro has accepted Mrs. Izumi (+Izumis both) as Koushiro's true parent{s}, however, we are not given indication that the other supporting characters were actually told about 'the secret' of Koushiro's. Shin's surprise, in that regard, can hardly be held too much against Shin - which Mrs. Izumi eventually quickly recognizes, dropping the argument and frustration - Shin was likely completely unaware how strongly Mrs. Izumi felt during these moments, while Mrs. Izumi was likely running on pure adrenaline responding!

Mrs. Izumi, in the original version, is also using a neutrally polite speech pattern that is overall appropriate when speaking to children; Koushiro, in the original, is also known for speaking throughout the entire series with a formal and polite pattern that is "unusual" for Koushiro's age, while it's more "typical" for Mrs. Izumi to use similar in this sequence.

Shin Kido, Jou's 2nd eldest sibling closer in age, the 2nd born of the three Kidos, is the sibling who appears throughout Adventure Episodes 35~39 and later Adventure-specific episodes (such as flashback sequence in Dark Masters arc) specifically. In the 2nd sequel series, "02", Jou's oldest sibling, Shuu, was introduced. The U. S. dub combined "Shin" and "Shuu" into "Jim", a singular character, but they were actually two separate siblings! (Thus, Jou is speaking to Shin as if Shin is the younger of the two siblings, addressing Shin commonly with a 'casual' "Nii-san", though in this scene, Jou sounds surprisingly more 'assured' and perhaps a slight bit 'full of' self, but is quickly grounded by Sora and Mimi not long after.)

I think the song choices are pretty self explanatory, so I'm not gonna write a big long song-by-song breakdown this time. I do have some notes on the choice of cover artwork and the pov of this playlist though.

If it isn't apparent by now, Paul isn't my fave character in Dune canon – Feyd-Rautha is. So why am I making a playlist dedicated to a character I don't even love?

In my years of consuming and creating art for my fandoms, I don't think I've ever come across a morally grey character that's half as complex and intriguing as Paul. Sure, I'm familiar with corruption arcs and self-styled messianic figures (Light Yagami from Death Note comes to mind). I've written for and continue to love characters who underwent cataclysmic deaths and resurrections, and came back wrong (see: Jason Todd from DC/Batman). And sure, Paul's character arc can similarly be boiled down to these familiar story beats of resurrection and corruption, but he's no angel at the start of his journey. He's aware of the trajectory of his story in ways these other characters aren't by virtue of being a seer of prescient visions. To walk clear-sightedly into his own ruination is such a fascinating thing to me.

Those familiar with the Major Arcana suit of the tarot cards will know the significance of The Fool: he is at the start of his journey, appearing to walk leftwards off a cliff with an optimistic smile because he's as yet unburdened by higher knowledge of lurking dangers. Like The Fool, I have Paul facing leftwards on this cover (flipped horizontally from the original Dune 2021 IMAX poster), because he too is embarking on a transformative journey when he enters the Arrakis deserts. The difference is, of course, that he becomes aware of his terrible destiny as a messianic figurehead for a holy war as soon as he sets off for this journey. And so it isn't with carefree optimism but the knowledge of his ruin hanging heavily on his shoulders that he takes his first steps into the desert.

The other major difference between the playlist cover and the Fool's tarot card design is how much smaller Paul's figure is in the composition of the whole image. The desert background easily dwarves his figure, which is something I've always loved about the IMAX poster. Despite all his visions of futures where he ascends to the mantle of a messianic leader, he is still just, at this moment in the canon timeline, a child. Small, and all alone in his journey. Not even his mother Lady Jessica would come to understand the weight of the transformation he will undergo.

Many of the songs on this playlist were ones that didn't make the cut for my general Dune playlist. But as I went along I realised it's grown into a love letter for Paul's character from the perspective of a sympathetic reader. "Found Heaven" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" only make sense as monologues addressed to Paul.

Rewatching Dune Part I really brought it home for me just how much of a child Paul still is when he enters the Fremen's deserts. He is frightened out of his mind by the knowledge that he will come to be the figurehead for whom millions will wage a holy war to the devastation of entire planets and deaths of billions, and it's a burden for him to bear alone. Did anyone ever stop to tell him not to fear?

If I'm not mistaken, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was written for Pink Floyd's own Syd Barrett, a genius lyricist whose declining mental health forced him to quit the scene too soon. Obvious parallels to Paul's madness aside, I like the metaphor this adds to Paul as not only a prophet but a painter / artist – which he is to an extent. He is an architect shaping the world into a future only he sees. The tragedy is of course that visionary artists often go where their lovers can't follow.

darn it i'm thinking about an AU where the Daisuke starts as being the Kaiser henchman instead of the "leader" of the good guys because i like AU madness so i'm here imagining things like:

Ken still has the Dark Seed and thinks everything is a game, but he's "friends" with Daisuke instead (like, not a strong bond! something like acquaintances only?)

They do not get along very well though… But something makes them stick together

Daisuke is also told the DW is a game, so he thinks this is a fun game with his "friend"

Their personalities are the same as canon, so yeah…

Daisuke still lives in Odaiba, and attends the same school and is from Hikari and Takeru's class. He was Hikari's classmate previously and still has the background from canon, but here he's just clueless about the digimon being real and believes in what was said by the authorities (idk what they would come up to cover August 3rd events tho, but they did find something for that)

When things are going south, and Daisuke is so sure of those kids telling the truth about the DW not being a game at all, he tries to open Ken's eyes to the reality but yeah, not working well…

Wormmon, Daisuke & V-mon know they need to save Ken from himself, so they definitely side with the kids to beat Chimeramon

So once Ken-chan gets "rescued" from that meltdown and loses Wormmon, Daisuke just joins the 02 group in order to "clean his mess"

So the Jogress arc is just… Ken trying his best to solve shit all alone and Daisuke trying to convince him to not do things alone, and then they become best buddies for real this time
