I've been trying to make a fancast for if the Percy Jackson series was made in the 1980s and 1990s. It's half Fancasting and half Faceclaims. Here's some of the ones I'm proud of so far:

Sally Jackson: Sally Field

Gabe Ugliano: Danny DeVito (Danny DeVito could also be Coach Hedge. Dual role maybe. Besides, I like Danny DeVito).

Chiron: Kevin Kline

Dionysus: Bill Murray (I'm not fully sold on this one, but I think it could possibly work. Bill Murray's got the deadpan comedy down). It's either Bill Murray or Tim Curry or maybe even Joe Flaherty.

Ares: Sylvester Stallone (I feel like he's one of the biggest action stars of the 1980s. He might honestly be able to play a god of war pretty well. His unique accent could even add to Ares as a character).

Medusa: Eartha Kitt (For some reason, i can't unsee this one. Eartha Kitt makes a great Aunty Em, to me).

Taylor Russell as Holly McDaniel, an Kind, Smart, & Independent young woman who's being friends with The Core Four & The Fab Twelve & being friends with Graceland "Grace" Prescott in the Extended Cut of Scream VI. She's the younger sister of Hayley McDaniel because they're the daughters of Hallie McDaniel.

Kiernan Shipka as Danielle "Dani" Brackett, an Beautiful, Sassy, Tough & Gorgeous young woman who's being friends with The Fab Twelve & The Core Four, she's one of the students at Blackmore University in New York & she's the baby sister of Danny Brackett.

So, I was rewatching the Rocky movies last night, and holy cow, I totally forgot just how swoonworthy Rocky is?? For one thing, he's hot as hell. Sylvester in his heyday was quite the dreamboat. Those big breathtaking brown eyes with those long ass eyelashes?? Those ridiculously broad shoulders??? His fluffy hair???? Those arms????? I mean DAMN, what a man! But what's great about him is that he's so cute despite being built like a tank. The way he just rattles off anything that pops into his head when he's with Adrian because he's really nervous around her is adorable. And sure, everyone and their dog remembers the famous scene at the end of the first film where he's shouting her name, but I had completely forgotten that the very first thing he says to her when she finally reaches him in the ring is "Where's your hat?" Like shut up that's so sweet! He just fought in the most important match of his life, he just earned the admiration of the whole crowd, he did what he set out to do, he can barely open his eyes cuz they're so swollen and bruised, but what's the first thing he IMMEDIATELY notices when he sees her? Her hat is missing. Because he knows she loves wearing hats. Because to him, she's the most important person in every room. Because he loves her. And fuck, that's just beautiful!

Anywho, rewatching them got me thinking about the line in Rocky 2 that's just as swoonworthy where he says: "You know, I never knew you were so light, you know, if I did, I would've carried you everywhere." This isn't a drabble request, I'm just curious which of the characters you write for do you think would be the most likely to say something like that? I know who I'd choose personally, but I'd enjoy knowing what you think!

I think probs Danny. I could see it happening on one of the karate hikes he takes. She tries one or two moves he's practicing and she slips and twists her ankle. He has to carry her back to the car through the woods and is very jovial about it.

Brief Thoughts on Judge Dredd Novels, Part IX: Wetworks by Dave Stone

And so Virgin's Judge Dredd books end in much the same way they began: with Dave Stone.

Quality-wise, Wetworks ends up splitting the difference between Stone's two other contributions to the series, being less characterful and efficient in its storytelling than Deathmasques - and there's nary an Armitage or Steel in sight, for shame! - but considerably more coherent than The Medusa Seed.

After book upon book of David Bishop warming up his conspiratorial muscles for Who Killed Kennedy - well, OK, it's just The Savage Amusement and Silencer, but in a nine book series, two out of three ain't bad - we finally get Stone's take on the matter, and it's exactly as zany and off-the-wall as you'd probably expect.

Which is to say, basically, that for all that I just called it "more coherent than The Medusa Seed," we're still making that judgement by the parameters of Dave Stone. In the thick of things, the conspiracy just about hangs together. It's only when you think to pull back a little, really, that you start to properly question the particulars of exactly why an extradimensional being masquerading as a Mickey Mouse stand-in should make a bid to control the Earth by means of staging a big feature-length action movie in which the planet's various Justice Departments get overthrown.

None of that really matters, however, because Stone's narrative voice is in full swing by this point, and it's rather glorious. More than Deathmasques or The Medusa Seed, Wetworks truly reads like the work of the madman who is going to produce Sky Pirates! in a mere five months' time, and this carries the novel quite far. Even if the book's musings on conspiracy and apocalypse aren't anything especially original for the 1990s, the fact that they're delivered with that idiosyncratic Dave Stone charm counts for a lot.

Indeed, while I'm nowhere near versed enough in the context of 2000 AD fandom in the 1990s to know what the expectations were for the 1995 Danny Cannon/Sylvester Stallone movie - which I'll probably get around to watching and reviewing in a few days' time - I don't think it's reading too much into Wetworks to detect a barely concealed undercurrent of cynicism directed towards the idea of big-budget cinematic spectacle, which can't help but feel pointed in light of Virgin's eventual decision to can the Dredd novels in response to the film's high-profile failure.

And it's a shame, really, because these nine books have been solid. Not always anything exceptional, by any means, but certainly solid, and the contributions of Stone in particular rank as rather entertaining slices of bizarro, ludicrously violent dystopian sci-fi. I'd also be remiss if I didn't give an extremely honorable mention to Stephen Marley's Dreddlocked, my beloved, but alas it seems that it is the way of all Virgin sci-fi novels to eventually find themselves subsumed by a failed cinematic adaptation, regardless of the actual material quality of the books themselves.

I'll still do the Black Flame novels, but as it stands I've really enjoyed doing these nine books, and I hope I've managed to make it generally entertaining in the process.

The more the hotel continues to wake up, the more Danny feels the years pressing down on him. He slumps onto the couch in the lobby, pointedly ignoring the siren call of the bar. The end was so close now. If Danny can’t save Abra from Rose, she would be Rose’s latest feast. He wasn’t sure he would be able to hold on if that happened. Not without Abra. Not without Billy. He’d embraced his sobriety with a broken heart and shattered soul, and he’d actually come through. Had made good little life for himself. Without any them, there was no starting over for Danny. Rose was just as likely to siphon him for years if Danny failed tonight.

All the pain and fear he’d neatly tucked away with his visitors are bleeding through the cracks of his mind. Danny looks down at his lap and pushes aside the memory of how good the whiskey glass feels in his hand.

Beside him the couch doesn’t move, because there’s no earthly weight to the presence, but the spirit that settles there is as familiar a body curling next to him. Longing and grief clutches Danny’s heart.

He hazards a glance, blinking back the tears. Danny doesn’t want to be reminded of his death, but he misses Billy so much. Blood trickles down the sides of Billy’s head and face from the gunshot wound. He’s still handsome, if not care-worn. Charming. Just a little more sad in the eyes. Billy looks at him with basset-hound eyes and a fond smile. Billy, his best friend. Who had become his friend long before Danny even knew what a real friend was.

He was a friend who’d seen Danny at his worst and watched as he put himself together piece-by-piece for almost a decade. The friend who had given him a home and a community. Who had played Scrabble with him on Sunday afternoons in the park. Billy who had introduced Danny to the library’s vast media shelves. They had watched everything from Jean Claude van Damme and Sylvester Stallone’s entire filmographies, all the way to the Sundance collection that Delilah, their favorites librarian, had foisted upon them; she had regularly cajoled Danny and Billy into writing local reviews for the library’s monthly movie events because she loved their commentaries.

Billy. His friend who became more to him. Became everything for Danny. Billy who had first kissed him on a couch like this two years ago.

Danny had brought home a director’s cut of Ladyhawke from the library’s latest acquisitions and they weren’t even 10 minutes into the film when Billy handed him an unopened Pepsi, a bowl of popcorn, and kissed him right on the lips. No questions asked, but all of the bashful apologies after. Danny had never needed an apology. He’d never kissed a man while sober. Never been been kissed by a sober man, actually. The desire and thrill was wholly different than Danny could have dreamed of because of how much he cared for Billy. Danny had carefully re-shaped his quiet desires to resemble a platonic line he would never cross. But then Billy had cupped his neck and his beard tickled Danny’s face. Danny’s stomach did a backflip into a new dimension. He’d eagerly kissed Billy back and Billy pulled Danny into his lap, and that’s how they spent the rest of the film together.

There wouldn’t be anymore more movie nights with Billy. No more snuggling in bed. Nothing would be the same.

“I’m proud of you. You know the right thing is never always going to be the easy thing,” Billy says and squeezes Danny’s knee.

Danny sniffs and looks away, shaking his head over and over. He frowns deeply.

Billy lifts Danny’s chin and turns his face. The touch is welcomed, but so cold and hollow. Danny’s heart breaks into even more pieces as Billy smiles.

“I love you, Danny Torrence.”

“I love you, Billy. Gonna really miss you,” Danny says, looking past the blood and viscera and pain, losing himself in Billy’s eyes.

Billy wipes away a tear from Danny’s cheek and kisses him gently.

“I’m so tired,” Danny says, and he takes a shaky breath.

Danny holds onto Billy as long as he can, until another wave of anger and hunger cascades through the hotel.

I began making a fancast for a Percy Jackson movie series in the 80s (the project largely started because I'm bored), but I've gotten stuck. Here's what I've got for the first books cast so far:

Annabeth Chase: Christina Applegate (I do know my choices for Percy and Annabeth played siblings on a sitcom, but they still look the most like the characters to me. Also, they fit the age range I needed).

Grover Underwood: Ralph Macchio

Sally Jackson: Sally Field

Gabe Ugliano: I can't decide. I've considered Danny DeVito (but then rethought it because he might work better with other roles). So idk.

Luke Castellan: Emilio Estevez (although I've never been too good at paying attention to teen movies, I think Emilio Estevez in the breakfast club looks passable for Luke).

Clarisse La Rue: Mindy Cohn

Dionysus/Mr. D: Bill Murray (when I read the books, I give Dionysus more of a slow drawl of a voice, ala Tim Curry or something. But I think Bill Murray just has the humour for this role, voice or no voice).

Chiron: Kevin Kline (although for a modern adaptation, I'd like Timothy Dalton too).

Ares: Sylvester Stallone

Zeus: Rip Torn (stole this casting from Disney's Hercules movie)
