That said, I will decline one-dimensional Hard vs. Soft sweethearts for end-game (along with variants of the genre) with respect to the setting I’d like to flesh out w you!

This is a request for a long-term, Hawaii, L.A., or Vegas-based Yakuza / Bōryokudan setting. We’re talking gambling, laundering, social pressure, taboos, and “They vs. Us” narratives. Consider large-scale clans versed in blackmail, bookmaking, loan sharking, trafficking of sorts; the kind within which you typically know the higher-ups from words of mouth before you eventually cross paths head-on (if you’re that unlucky).

A modicum of interest in organized crime’s modus operandi and Japanese etiquette is a given, but my aim lies less in hyperrealism than an exploratory drive. I will give more attention to character dynamics than parroting Yakuza-related terminology for the sake of it. Note that nothing compels you to playing a clan insider, but doing so will facilitate stronger, pre-established relationships. I’m also open to creating characters from scratch upon request!

Overall, this is a deliberately generic brainstorming, intended to be tweaked as we see fit.

I average 600+ words, focusing on my muses’ inner thoughts. That said, I will chew on just about anything that advances the plot.

I tend to give my muses a rough time sprinkled w fluff band-aids. I also love spicing up things w angst, 30 / 70 smut-plot ratio, high stakes, gray morality, mental swordplay, and darker themes—so minors DNI.

The Iron Alchemist

Hagane wo Tsugu Mono: Ryuga and Souma are trapped in a small stretch of corridor. Souma sits and asks Ryuga how he felt after the battle the previous day, recalling the pained look he had as Naomi died, and recalling his father sometimes had the same look on his face after sealing a Horror, one of mourning. He is now troubled, having focused on strength, when he now realises he is something he's missing, so Ryuga tells him Godou's words. Ryuga had arrived to find a Horror, Jigarus being fought already by a white armoured Makai Knight, who he recognised as Kouzan Kishi ZANKO. Using the Flashing Cut, ZANKO seals Jigarus, and after releasing his armour, Godou has that same pained look. His Madou Ring, Iruba, draws his attention to Ryuga, whose identity he questions, but on hearing his name seems to know he's the Golden Knight. They walk and talk, Ryuga has come to this place to restrain, and Godou takes some heart in knowing even the Golden Knight continues to seek strength. Ryuga asks to learn the Flashing Cut, and Godou is reluctant, warning of the dangers of you cannot control your darkness, so Ryuga shows him GARO On, the proof he has won against the darkness, suitably impressed, Godou leads him to where he is based (I swear this is the same filming location as where Zedom's arm was sealed), and explains he has been travelling to learn the secret of the Gate of Destruction. The first step of training is communicating with the Soul Metal and drawing out the darkness, then converting that to light, which he manages well, then being able to use that to attack a moving target, then using it properly on a summoned foe, Ryuha succeeds but is winded. Godou explains the strain can damage the armour, meaning it releases to avoid it, but with training they can beat it. Godou reveals there is also an opposite technique, the Shadow Cut, but given what Ryuga has already achieved over his darkness, he believes he can master it too in time. He muses briefly his son has yet to learn the technique, and talks about how difficult his son can be for him, but Ryuga can see how much he cares for him, and Godou says that while GARO is the hope of the Makai Knights, his son is his hope. As they part ways, Godou asks Ryuga to take care of his son of he has to. Despite hearing his father intended to teach him, Souma feels his father was hesitant after his loss of control, that he's a failure. Ryuga relates Godou's words, "That everything has a start" an advises Souma to think back to when he decided to become a Makai Knight. As Souma thinks, Ryuga seems to have a revelation of his own, but they're interrupted by Koyori and Mutsugi finding them and insulating the passageway. Rather than having them continue, Ryuga request Koyori recall the words from the monument, "The Person bathed in light seeks not the end, but blood", and Ryuga, thinking on those words, the glyph where they entered, and Godou's words, and announces he knows how to reach the Gate of Destruction. Back at the entrance of ARAVIS, Ryuga drives his sword into the centre of the marking, opening the door to the Gate of Destruction. Mutsugi surreptitiously uses her magic to activate the glyph trap, and stops Souma from acting as Ryuga and Koyori are teleported away, then insists to to Souma they go ahead. They entered the dark chamber, and Souma looks in awe at the Gate of Destruction, which appears like the image of a black wolf resting atop a white orb, hanging in the sky, and is crushed by the revelation, recognising the Black Wolf as his father.

New Generation Stars: Yuka starts another day of work, and seeing the robot is in sleep mode, leaves the room, as she does, the system starts playing, without any seeming input, footage of Earth Garon and Blazar's battle with Tagangular, at the end one of the blank Hyper Keys is loaded with Earth Garon data. Yuka returns, not noticing the keys at least for now, and with the robot finally awake, the start the day.

Gotchard: Greyon shows the Abyssal Sisters his collection, confident in his victory. Iron Gotchard thanks all the Warp Malgam's attacks, and defeats it with an Iron Knuckle, rescuing WarpTera. Dread attacks, and SteamLiner runs out of power, causing Hotaro to collapse, but is caught by Kudoh Fuga, who criticises Minato's teaching methods before escaping with everyone. Kudoh is angry, but cannot help hugging her father, who explains Ichinose is suffering the effects of a Forbidden Alchemy. Fuga had been the one to approach them, and taught Ichinose to transmute SteamLiner using the Fire GotcharDriver and his body, enhancing his ring temporarily, but it still puts a strain of things. Before Spanner and Rinne can plan to retrieve the other cards, Kyouka insists she and Fuga explain about Minato, who Greyon has now ordered to kill Ichinose. 10 years ago, Minato and Kyouka were friends at the Academy, alongside Minato's beloved junior, Suzuta Daiki, a man with ambitions to bring piece to the world even if he had to break the Laws to do it. The Academy was attacked by the Jungle Malgam, to everyone's shock, as Fuga was meant to be safeguarding the Chemies. Minato rushed to find the Professor, and Kyouka wanted to run to find Spanner after remembering he was visiting that day, leaving Daiki, who tried to fight the Malgam, which was supported by Lachesis and Clotho. Fuga saved Daiki, realising Greyon had managed to steal some Chemies after all, the Sisters annoyed to see him, and warned Kyouka and Daiki about Greyon. Unfortunately Minato had just reported the Malgam appearance to the Academy teacher, Greyon. Suzuya and the other students arrived and managed to convince Minato of the truth, despite Greyon's arguments, and Minato opted to restrain Greyon via alchemy. Unfortunately, Greyon immediately freed himself, and used that same alchemy to punish Minato by first killing Suzuya, and the bewitching the other students to kill eachother, leaving Minato to live with the memory as Clotho lead him to the Door of Darkness. When Kyouka found the scene later, post accidental-spearing from Spanner, Minator blamed himself for Suzuya's death. Understanding Minato is trying to avoid the kids death, they still refuse to let him to this, and rush to the former Academy while Fuga watches over Ichinose. When Minato stands in their way, Valvarad and Madjade face Dread again, he is then joined by Clotho, merged with GorillaSensei and BugLesia, but Minato stops her laying a hand on the students for now. Ichinose arrives, determined to stop Minato, and despite not being recovered becomes Iron Gotchard, leaving the others to fight Clotho as everyone tries to convince Minato to believe in them. A combo attack finishes Clotho, Rinne recovers GorillaSensei and Spanner BugLesia, as Iron Gotchard defeats Dread with a WarpTera enhanced Iron Knuckle. Minato seems to be about to be convinced for a second, but the memory of Suzuya and pain leads him to walk away. Clotho returns to Greyon with the DreadDriver, he declares Minato is no longer useful, telling Lachesis to eliminate him, as he prepared his greatest experiment yet.

Boomboomger: Deliveryman Taiya drives his red sports car to a church, where the son of the Aori family is (forcibly) marrying Mira, who looks unsure of herself. Taiya interrupts and absconds with the bride, Aori men in hot pursuit. His client is Mira's actual boyfriend, waiting to elope with her at the airport. She isn't unhappy, but prefers to take the wheel herself. Taiya is supported by Chassiro overlooking the situation, and the robot Boomboom, but the Aori pursuit is disrupted by a Yarucar ridden by two Hashiliens, Dekotread and Itahsar, the first to arrive on earth, a situation Boomboom and co have been waiting for. A drag race begins, and at Itahsar's request for the veil, Dekotread sets the Yarucar on them. Taiya converts his car into a black car equipped with a canon, and blasts them away, landing by converting back to red to make a hover landing, as they fly a man watches and compliments Taiya's skill. Taiya makes a stop, buys a whole clothing stores stock so Mira can change, and advises her to lose the dress ,but she refuses. Chassiro heads out as well. Mira emerges from changing to run into Itashar, who turns her dress into a monster, which torments the city, converting fear into fuel, a police officer is among the victims, as the Kurumaju rampages, Itashar summons Nejiraiders to assist. Mira cannot abandon the dress, a memento of her grandmother, and Taiya promises to recover it, with Boomboom assuring it will be saved if the Kurumaju is defeated. Taiya becomes BoomRed, and fights, while Chassiro grabs Mira to complete the delivery. En route, Mira decides she's not going to let anyone else make her choices anymore, and forcibly uses Chassiro's Boomboom Changer to activate SuperCar cannon mode and shoot them back to the battle. Telling Taiya she's going to fight, to Chassiro's annoyance, Taiya accepts her conviction and gives her her own Boomboom Changer, and as BoomRed, BoomBlue and BoomPink, Bakuage Sentai Boomboomger is born. Together they fight and defeat the forces. Yarucar, to his masters' surprise, suddenly goes wild, consuming all the fuel and rushing into an interdimensional highway. The Boomboomgers are in hot pursuit, as Boomboom launches the launches the Boomboom cars, before converting to Boomboom Trailer and following. Taiya boards Boomboom Trailer, Chassiro Boomboom Off-road and Mira Boomboom Wagon, and Boomboom properly introduces himself to Mira as Boomdario Boomderas. They chase Yarucar, evading it's attacks, and eventually drive it off the road, it spews up the fuel, which reforms into a giant Kurumaju, and next wears Yarucar it doesn't appear to remember what it did. In order to fight the Kurumaju, Boomboom Trailer converts to Gate Mode, and by driving through it Boomboom Off-road and Boomboom Wagon convert to Attack Mode, before attaching as arms to Boomboom Trailer once it stands up, forming Boomboom Robo. Chassiro is able to dismantle the Kurumaju's armour, and Mira trap it in a "Wedding Cake" before they destroy it, saving the citizenry. Later, Mira tells her boyfriend she isn't leaving with him and is going to be a Boomboomger, to his dismay, but Taiya is happy. He's made his delivery, even if the package has been rerouted.

Below are points I consider to be important regarding my muse and I hope they will be kept in mind during plotting/writing. Links to specific headcanon or divergence posts may be included in the below and I may add to this post in the future, as I go back over the manga or think about things further.

Note: filler arcs/chapters and the 100 Year Quest are not included as canon here.

In her pre-ToH life, Milli was of the Felidae people of Caelum, not that she remembers too much about it there. The Felidae are one of the many magically gifted peoples of the land and were known for their distinct cat-like appearance and attributes. Their cat ears and tail help them with their reflexes and balance, are a result of their innate transformation magic therefore can appear and disappear at will.

Due to trauma as a child, Milli was unable to completely access the natural transformation magic she possessed, only able to give herself cat ears as a teenager. During the war with Alvarez, the rest of her abilities unlocked and she now has control of transforming a tail as well.

As a result of her years of training with her guildmates and her own natural abilities as a Felidae, Milli has developed impressive skills of speed, stealth, and agility along with her heightened senses and reflexes. In combination with her magic, these skills have earned her a certain reputation for being one of the best when it comes to quests that involve hunting/tracking, ambushing, or spying. She also has a strong preference for such requests as well and enjoys taking them on.

Related to the above, her mage/job outfits are designed to suit such missions. She wears form fitting clothes in subdued colours, made of specialised materials that are strong and silent (this is the vibe, but not with a shiny texture). Such an outfit was what she wore for the X791 GMG (not the ridiculous bikini thing she wore in canon).

On the topic of the GMG...During her battle alongside Kagura against Lyon and Yuka, Milli was not defeated in the manner shown in (anime) canon, she was not distracted by cat-related things and did not run headfirst into the wall. Her nimble movements made her a difficult target to hit for some time, so Lyon used a blizzard spell to hit her, and as she is quite susceptible to the cold, she was slowed down significantly and was soon defeated.

Yes, she loves cats and gets excited over them and cat related things, however, this doesn't mean she would ever grab cats (or Exceed) and squish them in a hug, she treats them with great care and respect. She also has enough control of herself to not get distracted by them in important moments, and while they do tend to lift her mood, the scene of the GMG ball where Erza gives her the Exceed to stop her 'sulking' does not happen (because 1) Erza would not do that, and 2) Milli is still dealing with traumatic things and to have her instantly cheered by cats is cheap)

Some time post-gmg, closer to the war, Milli sought out Jellal and Ultear to learn more about them and work through her own feelings. She was still processing and coming to terms with things during the war, but came to a resolution when she found herself fighting alongside them and preventing an attack from hitting Jellal. She's not totally at ease around them but no longer holds hatred towards them.

She and the other Mermaid Heel mages do not become models for Sorcerer Weekly.

A pang shot through her chest but it was nothing more than a distant echo of the pain she once felt. She thought she’d be past this point by now, it’s been so long and yet she still hasn’t forgiven herself for it.

How did she not see it? A question she asked herself time and time again. She saw nothing but the usual warmth behind his brown eyes, felt nothing but affection behind his touch. His smile seemed as genuine as it always had been, no deceit lurking in his voice. She was the closest one to him and yet she never saw it coming.

None of the survivors blamed her. Not a single one and yet that didn’t stop her from blaming herself. Was she blinded by the love she felt for him? Had her own emotions clouded her judgment leading to the loss of nearly her entire pack? Their lives rest on her shoulders, their blood on her hands. If only she had seen something, anything to prevent the massacre that she had witnessed first hand.

“Solene!” Fleur’s voice pulled her from her reverie, a smile instantly curling at the edges of her warm lips as she turned her gaze to the teenager running towards her. “I didn’t keep you waiting too long, did I?” She asked, noting the look still shining in her guardian’s eyes though it was fading quickly.

“No, of course not, sweetie.” She stood up, grabbing the bags from off the bench beside her and gave Fleur a reassuring grin. “C’mon, we have a house full of hungry mouths to feed and a dinner to make.”

“Oh, can we make something special for Arata?” Her voice softened, her smile fading as her gaze met Solene’s. “I think he could use a pick-me-up.”

Solene’s smile grew warm and gentle. With everything she did wrong in the past, she couldn’t help but wonder how she managed to be so lucky. How does someone as guilty as she is end up with a family as wonderful as she had? From the baby she adopted off the streets, her siblings, and all the friends she’s made along the way, she had managed to land herself a life she truly didn’t deserve and though she hates herself for admitting it and yet she still wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I'm Standing on a Million Lives - Volume 10

A nice "bridging" volume. We get the end of the Rainbow Stair arc, some downtime and then straight into the Black Work arc! That last arc felt pretty long but I also took a mini reading hiatus that could have contributed to that. Wonder how many volumes this new arc will stretch across...

Ch. 45

-It seems we're going to wrap up the Rainbow Stair arc soon. Again, I kinda wish they just did that in the previous volume but oh well.

-Kusue and Yusuke debate whether it's worth it to stop murdering people after you start to "save your soul." Kusue is a catholic confirmed!

Ch. 46

-So we get a chapter mainly from Cantil's perspective. We learn that he (and Fatina) are older than they look due to creature magic. Malita then becomes Cantil/Fatina's apprentice because she wants a new start. Cantil muses about the time skip mechanic and how he might not even be alive the next time the heroes come around.

-I think it was a good idea to give Cantil's POV. He emphasizes how Yusuke's a kid and still very malleable. Since he's not going to be around he asks Glenda to keep an eye on Yusuke for him. Some of the writing in this part was a little too "all hail Yusuke" for my tastes, but at least there was some healthy skepticism thrown in there.

-We get a very unsatisfying Q&A segment with the Game Master. Learned nothing.

-The players plan for improving the Ihar-Nemore society was interesting, but it all seemed to go a little too smoothly and quickly towards the end. I feel like realistically there would be more push back and these kinds of changes would take years, not months. Also, it was a little too convenient how everything in this fantasy world was an exact parallel to real world crises. Well, I guess there's only so many ways humans can interact/mess up, no matter where you are.

-Was that a Fortnite reference at the end there? Another reminder that Yusuke's a child.

Ch. 47

-We get a nice, in-between arcs, beach episode. Definitely nice to have these "real world" chapters for balance. We also get to see how the characters dynamics shift from world to world.

-While I think Yusuke and Yuka's inner monologues about how they're not used to the "IRL" world are exaggerated, I can kind of relate. Especially during the pandemic, I'm in isolation for the majority of the year, so I'm also the stereotypical, under-socialized geek.

-We see some other players in the USA and the host of the gathering reveals that the fantasy world and the real world are already connected via a small portal. It will be interesting to see how the players pool their knowledge.

-Seeing all these players together makes me wonder how many players died and didn't make it to the gathering. Considering how rigorous the quests have been so far, presumably some people couldn't cut it.

-You can tell this series doesn't prioritize ecchi based on how modestly dressed all the girls were at the beach. That's kind of refreshing.

Ch. 48

-Yaaay new guy! I really like his design/personality. Plus, we get a more balanced group with another adult and male. Funny to see an isekai lover get isekai'd.

-I totally related to Habaki's job struggles. His reasons for not quitting and his thoughts on how his job sapped all his energy and prevented him from reading any challenging books. Too real. (Of course, my job is way cushier than his, but I think these are universal struggles for any full-time employee).

-I guess the Game Master can help Yusuke commit real-world crimes so long as it helps with the mission. Until they revealed that I was like "uh...why is he doing something so risky??"

-It's pretty ridiculous that the Game Master has to drive Yusuke to save Habaki. Can't he just teleport him? lol. Also, another Seaman reference.

-We see the I'm Standing on a Million Lives manga in the background at the bookstore which hurts my brain

-When the people at Habaki's company were like "EVERYTHING'S RUINED!" I was kinda laughing because I work in systems and if everyone busted up our PCs it wouldn't be that big of a deal and we could recover pretty quickly. Luckily, they do acknowledge cloud storage which made it more believable.

Ch. 49

-We get another non-fiction section, this time about the WHO's recommendations for presenting suicide in fiction. Very interesting and mature of the author to acknowledge the problematic nature of his own text. It kind of felt like the disclaimer you see before some shows these days in streaming.

-After the blurb about suicide we get another one about "black" companies and "invincible" people. I had never heard the term "invincible people" in this context before, so that was fascinating. I feel like we don't categorize people the same way in the US. If someone does something dangerous because their life's falling apart, I think we would probably just pull out the psychology terms (narcissistic, personality disorder, sociopath etc.). In Japan they have all these archetypes (NEET, Hikkikomori, Invincible Person). I guess we probably have some, but you don't hear about them as much.

-So, the previous quest was completely pointless because the cities they saved were almost immediately destroyed. Womp wommmmp.

-The fact that "black" = corrupt in Japan is definitely awkward, but I understand it's just a cultural difference...

-The new storyline of a policy being put in place that no longer makes sense but a lot of people have died so there's no turning back, sounds very familiar. I'm sure you can compare it to a lot of things but it reminds me of the Afghanistan war...

-I guess it's a good thing that Malita left Ihar-Nemore when she did! I expect we'll see her again in the near future.

[nekojima-neighborhood]

It’s finally here! An all-new custom neighbourhood, developed by @katatty and @moocha-muses!

Welcome to Nekojima: a small island off the coast of Takemizu, where the cats outnumber the townspeople and everyone knows how to fish.

Nekojima's normally a quiet, cozy little place, watched over by Toomo, its resident goddess. But last year two of the island's favorite citizens (and best fisherpeople) were lost at sea in a dangerous storm. Their families are still reeling from the blow.

Toshi Utagawa's back in town, bringing along a baby and a slightly damaged heart. Speaking of hearts, there's a new doctor in town that's stolen a few. And the peace up at the ryokan's been broken by the owners' grandson. They can hear his guitar all the way down to the beach. We haven't even mentioned the usual crop of summer guests! That mysterious writer doesn't seem like she plans to head home any time soon, and some reporter's been picking a fight with Nekojima's only resident celebrity. He can't be very good at his job....

It's up to the Simmer to soothe things down - or stir them up even more!

General Notes

A few things to know before you get started:

Nekojima probably isn’t beginner friendly in the same way the Maxis hoods are. It’s quite intricate and overall more focused on storytelling than gameplay, although it should still be plenty of fun to play!

There are some pretty sad elements. Grief is a theme in more than one household, but there’s ample opportunity for the player to cheer things up.

This is a roadless neighbourhood! This means you won’t be able to place new lots down, or move existing ones around. We think of the inability to place new lots as a feature ;) After all, it’s a remote island! If you try moving a lot and can’t get it to go back, just hit the escape key.

There are 8 unnocupied lots and one large empty 4x4 lot that could be used to build some apartments, if you’re desperate to get more families in there.

“Main Street” makes use of a few stacked lots, so that sims can live above their shops without having to run them as a home business! This could cause camera issues for some players and might take a little getting used to, but we feel like the aesthetic is worth it. Increasing the fade distance or turning off imposter lots altogether may help, if you find it a pain to play them.

The School & the Karaoke Bar are owned by townies. This allows for owned businesses which aren’t run by sims, but also means it’s trickier for players to make alterations to those lots.

We couldn’t work out a way to have a working hotel with playable guests, so Steamed Bun Springs is a household you need to get a little creative with.

Likewise, The Cat in the Bamboo Forest (an art gallery) can be run as a business in a number of ways. You can either have the artist paint and set the paintings for sale, or simply sell prints (we have included recolours of a maxis painting for this exact purpose, see reccomended downloads below.)

There are sims in the neighbourhood who went to college according to their memories, but we chose not to give them expanded want panels. They are easy enough to add with the batbox or other hack objects if desired.

A few of the lots use the cafeteria stove which came with university. If you have mods to spawn a cafeteria worker, you may run into problems with these! Either switch them out for another stove, or remove the mod in question.

Minoru Fujiwara, the town doctor, is related to the Nagata townie/NPC family. However, they don’t show up on his family tree as we envisage them being quite distant relatives, and didn’t want to make a bunch of dead sims for ancestry purposes.

If you have trouble with graves not appearing in the churchyard, try running the Hoodchecker!

We’ve tried to keep the neighbourhood as cc-free as we could, but there are a small number of things we had to include for practical purposes or to preserve a specific idea we had.

Invisible Fishing Pond. For fishing off the dock!

Castaway stories stone fence. You can get it from meetme’s full bundle, or just grab the fence only HERE.

Marvine’s ladder. A must-have for tiny houses!

This set of custom paintings. Extract them into the My Documents/EA Games/Sims 2/Paintings folder. These are for one of the sims in the neighbourhood who is a painter! (Alt Link)

Invisible iron fence. This is used to keep routing sensible on the stacked lots.

Recommended Mods & CC

There aren’t any mods you absolutely need to play Nekojima, but for the best possible experience (in addition to the usual corruption-saving and anti-regen mods) we have a few other recommendations:

These wall hanging recolours, for The Lady In Red & the Sims 3 plumbbob poster. Could come in handy for players who want to sell prints in the gallery instead of keeping the poor artist at the easel 24/7.

No memories clear. Townies in this hood all have detailed memories it would be a shame to lose! Squinge’s No Townies Memory Loss didn’t seem to do the trick 100%, but this has worked well in our testing.

Hire family members. The Sushi restaurant makes use of hired family. It will still play fine without this mod, but you won’t be able to change family member wages or assignments without it.

Allow strays on community lots. It just doesn’t feel like Nekojima without a few strays showing up wherever you go!

Perfect Plants OR Trim Inaccessible Bushes and Water Inaccessible Flowers. Should come in handy for managing gardens.

Compatibility Information

Europa was built with all EPs and SPs installed. It requires all EPs but should still be playable without all SPs. Some items might be missing, though.

Facts and Figures- Saizo x OC

Author’s note: Hello, people! Till now I have been reblogging stuff from other people, but today, I have one of my own creations for you. this is my first ever fic on tumblr, so please forgive me if Saizo seems OOC. This is inspired by @suzunesays ‘s headcanon which can be found here

Dark eyes glare at the wall. Clenching his fists by his side, he gets up from his seat and walks away. Writing is difficult. Who says writing for the papers is an easy task?

His deadline is coming up, he knows. He needs to complete that piece on the most recent murder ASAP. He needs to find a way to get the facts he needs. But how? All his leads had gone cold. All his sources miraculously unaware of this new gang on the streets. His former colleagues had been tight lipped about the whole incident.

Get a grip on yourself. He moves to the balcony of his small, sparse apartment. Information isn’t going to drop in your arms. You need to find it, somehow. You need to –

His train of thought is interrupted by the buzzing of his phone. He glances at the screen. Yukimura. He hit decline before he places the phone on the edge of his balcony’s steel railing, reaching into his pockets for a pack of cigarettes. The phone buzzes again. What is it now? He catches the phone just before it falls off the railing. So persistent.

‘What is it, little lord?’

‘Saizo, I need you to come by my college campus. There’s someone I want you to meet. I think that-’

Saizo artlessly pulls a cigarette out and lights it. ‘Little lord, if this is about another blind date-‘

‘This is not about any date,’ Yukimura sighs in annoyance, ‘rather, it’s about that case you’re writing about. I think I know a girl whose dad was killed by those psychos.’

Saizo nearly drops the phone in shock. ‘A girl, you say? Are you sure, little lord? I don’t just go about meeting people because the claim they have information.’

‘I’m positive, Saizo. Her name is Yuka Asano.’

That made Saizo drop his cigarette. Yuka Asano. The name does sound familiar, but where has he heard it? Ah, she could be related to the most recent victim, Hiroshi Asano. Or she could be a lure to his death.

‘… I’ll be there. Have you said anything about me?’ he crushes the cigarette under his shoe.

‘No. Do you take me for an idiot?’

‘Not an idiot, dear. Perhaps a little dense.’

He hangs up before he can hear Yukimura’s incensed voice sputter out anything further. Well, seems like information really did drop in my arms. He goes back into his room, shutting the laptop down. He walks out of his apartment, locking the door behind him.

Let’s hope you are the source I’m looking for, Yuka Asano.

The ride to Yukimura’s campus doesn’t take long. He pulls his phone out. Please tell me you aren’t distracted by those frat boy idiots that surround you, dear. The sound of frantic footsteps making towards him proves him wrong. There stood Yukimura, red faced, and sweating. Great.

‘What took you so long, Saizo?’ he asks, pulling at the collar of his sweaty jersey.

‘Where’s the girl?’ Saizo glances around the place, checking for eavesdropping souls. He turns his attention back to the little lord.

‘She has a name, you know,’ says Yukimura, wiping the sweat from his brow.

‘I could care less.’

Saizo tapped his fingers on his helmet. He wasn’t here to discuss names. He needed information. He could almost imagine the stupid editor of his paper demanding the article he had yet to finish. He got off his motorcycle and ran a hand through his hair.

Yukimura sensed Saizo’s annoyance and knew better than to annoy him further. ‘She’s working part time at the new café a few blocks down.’ Yukimura pauses, scratching the back of his head. ‘Hey, Saizo, be nice, will you? She’s pretty shaken up by what happened.’

‘Thank you, little lord. Much obliged.’ Saizo says in a detached voice, ignoring the look of slight hurt on Yukimura’s face. Sorry, little lord. That’s just the way I am. He wears his helmet and gets on his motorcycle again. He can feel Yukimura’s eyes on him.

Saizo pulled his visor up, looking at Yukimura. ‘Something else you want to tell me, little lord?’

Yukimura smiles and runs a hand through his dark grey hair. ‘I have a feeling, Saizo. This girl is gonna be the one for you. I was about to set you both up on a blind date, but you know, her dad was killed and-‘

Saizo clenches his fist. ‘Little lord, stop playing matchmaker for me and focus on your life. You should be worrying about your grades and not my love life.’

With that, Saizo drove towards that new Café he had been frequenting for the past few weeks. Who knew that the girl he was looking for had been there this whole time? Saizo smiled underneath his tinted visor, sure that the little display of emotion remains unseen.

Traffic Gods are kind to him and he reaches his destination in less than five minutes. It is four thirty right now. She should probably be in.

He parks his ride where he does every day. He squints his eyes against the sunlight. Walking towards the entrance to the café, he checks his surroundings for any unwanted pursuers, finding none. Why am I like this? He wasn’t like this before. He doesn’t understand why he has become so paranoid over the years. No, not paranoid. More like, overly cautious, he corrects himself. Giving one last look over his shoulder, he opens the glass door.

He inhales the scent of coffee and freshly baked desserts. The place is quieter than usual. He glances at the counter. There’s only two people there. He takes in his surroundings warily. This is the time when students should be flocking to this place, completing their homework or bringing their dates. Why is this place so empty?

He walks over to his seat. Yes, he calls it his, because he always sits in that particular spot whenever he visits the café. He takes off his cut gloves just as a voice speaks up from beside him.

‘Welcome back, sir. Would you like the usual?’ he looks up into light brown eyes that shine with emotions he never displays. His eyes wander over to her name tag. Yuka. He almost smiles. She looks at him expectantly. Oh, she’s waiting for my order.

‘I’m still thinking,’ he places his gloves on the table, ‘Do you have any new additions to the menu?’ He looks up again to see her tapping her temple with a finger. Well, if she can display her emotions so easily, she surely cannot be much of a threat to him. She wasn’t slender, but she didn’t look too tough either. Not an imposter, then. But how could he be sure?

‘We do have a new addition to our desserts. Kinako mochi and dango. Would you like a sample, sir?’ The girl looks positively delighted that someone would take notice of the change in their menu. He nods. ‘And your usual black coffee with it, sir?’ she jots down his order.

‘No.’

She looks at him, a slight crease between her brows. ‘Well then, sir what would you like? We have a really-’

‘Just the dango.’ He didn’t mean to come off as snappish or rude, but the girl’s expression did not change in the slightest. She smiled at him and walked away.

Saizo went over her appearance in his mind’s eye. She doesn’t look like she has been crying for days, no dark circles or redness in her eyes. She seems well dressed. Her waitress’ uniform was clean and well put together. Her hair was neat, too. Maybe he had been wrong. Why doesn’t this girl look like she has been mourning for the father she lost just last week? Maybe the little lord was wrong and the girl’s name matching Hiroshi Asano’s name was just a coincidence.

No, coincidences don’t happen in my line of work. There’s either a connection, or there is not. He drums his fingers on the table and glances out of the window. He could see his motorcycle underneath the shade of a tree. He takes stock of his surroundings again. There was no customer there except for himself.

Something felt off. Saizo glanced at the counter. The two figures he had seen there had not moved. He could not discern what they looked like from behind the various treats on display. He took out his phone and pretended to be busy. He strained his ears to listen for any oncoming attackers. Anything that should not be in a café like this one. Again, he finds nothing of the sort.

The sound of quiet and careful footsteps shake him out of his musing. Yuka was back with his order, and… two large lattes?

Artist Interview with Brenton Hamilton by Yuka Lou

Yuka: How did you come about working largely with various historical processes? How did you get started? Who taught you these different practices? 

Brenton: I've been doing these processes for 20 years or so. I began as a platinum printer and was very interested in the landscape. My work and interests have evolved dramatically since then. I was a studio assistant and helped Craig Stevens with a platinum project. I was learned a little from George Tice about platinum.

Yuka: Why are you interested in working with these processes such as collodion, embellished cyanotypes, platinum, etc. in this day and age? What do you like about it and how does it relate and/or speak to the content of your work? 

Brenton: I really respond to the object and the materials  - I love the paper, the emulsions. Making things ! We live in a visual culture now that is screen-centric and many, many images will never be an object only a projection on a screen. That doesn't work for me. So, I like the involvement and the time that each image requires of my attention.

Yuka: What challenges have you faced working with these processes? 

Brenton: The challenges are that these processes are finicky - most are made from recipe - and from distant old knowledge. Ive had to teach myself a lot by reading and experimenting.

Yuka: I am particularly drawn to your variations in platinum and gum bichromate work - could you speak a little about what this work is about? What is your work process? What inspires you?

Brenton: The Embellished works are like paintings for me. I'm trying to suggest and imply an eccentric story. Not a literal story - but a possible one. The extensions with gum, paint, gold and silver leaf all point to my own obsession with history and time. Old manuscripts, monks and scribes. Of course all made via light and the sun and photographic material. I feel that all of this materiality helps me make a rare looking - here to fore unseen description of a dream or a distant place far afield from the world we inhabit. To one that: I "conjur up" along the way. A musing about life - and a daydreamer.

A bit of background on Brenton Hamilton:

Brenton Hamilton is a visual artist and historian of photography who lives and works not he coast of Maine. Hamilton, a master of the 1840’s cyanotype process, chooses this antique medium to render his one-of-a-kind dreamlike visions in an equally unique and intense hue, mirroring the ocean outside his studio window and the blue-black depths of the night sky in Maine.

With a palette that finds its corollary in Renaissance painting, Hamilton combines human anatomy astronomy, and botanical imagery to create intriguing and provocative arrangements. Referring to ancient Greece and Rome, as well as 15th and 16th century Netherlandish and Italian paintings, Hamilton appropriates symbols and visual elements from the history of art to arrive at a thoroughly contemporary vision.

Many of the works are further embellished with layers of white gouache, silver leaf of gum arabic washes, adding layers of complexity that blur the boundaries between painting and photography. Hamilton’s work is an astonishing hybrid of media and a bridge between antique and postmodern that may defy classification.

Akio, Himiko and Rin Minori

Akio is the current clan leader for all the Pureblood vampires. He is the father of Kyoko and Raiden as well as uncle to Haru, Takahashi, and Yuka. He has seven children altogether, six with his deceased wife Himiko and one with his current wife Rin. He rules with a firm hand and is merciless when it comes to enforcing their laws. Nothing happens without his say. He is supposed to be succeeded in position by Kyoko though since she has run off, they have yet to decide if they will simply let the second born take the seat or press forward with tracking her down.

When Akio was still young, word spread of a vampire who had laid with a Lycan and had even had a child. This was a dangerous thing to do for not only did they not know what might come from a child born of these two species but they were currently battling a war with the Lycans since they were created simply for the extermination of all vampires. He was sent to investigate and having found this to be true, he was ordered to rule judgment on them by death. Akio killed the vampire and Lycan but when he had gotten to the child, he found himself unable to pull through and left her alive. This woman grew up to be his second wife Rin though he currently doesn't know it's her.

Rin, on a mission to avenge her parent's death, sought out a witch to hide her Lycan side, keeping only the vampire side at the forefront. With that accomplished, she made her way to the Minori manor and claimed herself as a Fullblood vampire (meaning a vampire born from two vampire parents without any noble blood) who had lost both her parents to the Lycans. She claimed that she had no other family and no place to go so the clans took her in and made her a servant to the manor. Slowly, over time she worked her way up until finally becoming a personal servant of Akio's.

This was when she made her move, it took time but eventually, she had been able to seduce Akio, (at this point he had taken over the seat for the clan's leader) becoming his mistress. Slowly, he began to develop feelings for her and when she was certain she had him completely, she murdered his wife Himiko in her library. Now that he was a widower, he was free for her to make her next move and only two months after his first wife's death, he had married Rin. It was right after this that Kyoko had run away. A few years later and she gave birth to his seventh child Misaki.

As time passed, Rin began the next part of her plan. She wants to slowly murder each and every one of Akio's children from his first wife, leaving only Misaki to take the seat before she finally takes out Akio himself and then destroys the clans from the inside out. As of right now, they are all still alive though she is actively seeking ways to get rid of them. The first target is Kyoko and the next in line for the seat. She plans on hiring a hunter/hitman to kill off the Pureblood.

Rin comes off as a composed woman but there is always that feeling that something is off about her which is why it took her so long to raise up to get close enough to Akio. She is pretty good at pulling off the caring stepmother role when in front of those who she feels she needs to put the act on for but even Akio now knows that she doesn’t care much for his previous children and babies Misaki.

Oh, what’s this? A cute little treat wanting to play? Crimson eyes gleamed, a fanged grin spreading across cold lips as he stepped closer to Ne Jeong. “Well, doesn’t that look tasty,” Raiden commented, hands suddenly finding their way to her waist and pulling her in closer to him. As one arm wrapped around her, the other raised and tilted her head up a bit more. The smirk never left his lips as he leaned down taking the other end of the pocky stick between his lips. He paused for only a moment, his eyes steadily on hers before he began to trail bites along it, he couldn’t help but wonder how far she would let him go, if this was some sort of test from her of if she was merely trying to find a way to get him to kiss her. Either way, he certainly wasn’t complaining as he moved closer and closer, waiting for whatever reaction she’d have to his bold moves.
