In a 80 or 90s movie setting, what would Yata be considered as? Like the sporty type or a nerd or something?

 My first thought was sporty type, but if we’re talking like stereotypical 80s/90s high school movie that wouldn’t really work for Yata since he’s not a mean jock. Though since he’s into skateboards he could be more the ‘rebellious’ kind of character, he’s sporty but he doesn’t like snooty jocks and probably hangs out with the stoners at the skate park all the time. I feel like Yata wouldn’t work as the nerd because he isn’t that smart (Fushimi on the other hand is 100% the stereotypical nerd character who Yata would have to come save from being shoved in a locker) but he’s not a popular kid either, I feel like he’d be more a side character in that sort of movie. A tertiary character might have a crush on him but he doesn’t get a lot of screen time and most of what he has is either smiling nervously or doing skateboard tricks in the background. Also depending on what part of the 90s we’re talking about poor Yata would probably end up with the cringiest dialogue because he’s supposed to be using all the latest slang and makes his character immediately incredibly dated. He walks around in the baggiest clothes and probably takes his skateboard to class, everyone seems fairly friendly with him but at lunch he’s only eating with his nerdy best friend. He could probably be a support character for the lead, likes he’s at table with the main characters and gets to unknowingly dispense simple advice even though he’s not involved in the main plot (while Fushimi sits there glaring because the stupid main characters are ruining his alone time with Misaki).

I think some of us need a quick guide to the angel au thingy, lol. A little help with that?

If you're asking about what the Original Angelic Layer is, I went into great description here, but as a quick summary:

In Angelic Layer (which , it is a fighting tournament style game. A player (known as a Deus) buys, crafts, and designs a controlled doll (called an Angel) and with a tele-link headset, the Angel is controlled by the Deus’ thoughts. They fight other angels in one on one fights to become a champion. 

So in an MLxAL Au, the Deus’ would be the civilians (Marinette, Adrien, Alya, etc) and the Angels would be their hero selves (Ladybug, Chat Noir, Rena Rouge) or akuma selves (Volpina, Mr. Pigeon, Stormy Weather etc) if they don't have a hero one.

I'm currently in the writing process for the AU as well as character design. Each chapter is character focused (like written from their POV) so while Marinette and Adrien are the main character/Misaki replacements, everyone will get at least one chapter of focus (though important characters will get more). Unfortunately that's where the writing has slowed down for me, especially since not every character is in love with the game.

Romance will probably very minimal despite both Marinette and Adrien having aliases while they play for in story reasons, though I've already written in some flirtation in their first meeting. It wasn't super prominent in the original manga (and I hated what they did with it in the original anime) which is why it's not currently heavy on my mind, but I wager if there IS a ship it's still Adrien x Marinette.

For some "fanfic" search tags: Lila will be a bad guy here, as well as Chloe. Neither will reach the level that they did in canon since they don't have magic and their bullying is all within the context of the game. Chloe will def come out better on the other side but not Lila. And since this is a No Magic AU, parental figures will be controlling but no where near the level of canon, so there's a trajectory for reconciliation in this AU.

I understand this is not a super popular IP and not everyone will go in having much lore knowledge on Angelic Layer, so I will be doing the work to explain the world and game appropriately as things come up lol. It won't be like SL where you probably need to watch original episodes to fill in gaps since the ALAU is going to exist in essentially an entirely new universe sans Miraculouses.

hi!! i try not to do like super duper official ages for the love interests, aside from a general age range of early 20's- early 30's, so everyone can headcanon as they'd like. (but in my headcanon, misaki is in their early 20's; angel and ro in mid 20's, v in his late 20's. but of course, just imagine them as you'd like.)

but for the side characters, it's determined: feli and luca are in their early 20's, vince and ai hua are in their 50's.

Anna watched the television program, which featured a scene from an elementary school classroom, without even thinking about it. Anna has never been to school. She is a Strain who has a powerful sensory ability, so she spent her days being a victim of experiments in a facility, and just the other day, she was rescued by the Red King Suoh Mikoto from "Homura" and came here.

On television, children write their questions and hopes for their future.

"Sounds interesting. Let's try it."

Totsuka, who was watching the same TV on the other side, smiled and said that.

When Totsuka thinks about it, he acts quickly. The reason he is a man of many interests is that he immediately does anything he has the slightest desire to try. Totsuka bought stationery and an envelope and gave them to Anna. Anna obediently accepted it.

"In how many years will you write to Anna?"

When Totsuka asked her, she thought silently. Anna's adult self was now too far away for her. For Anna, who has lived a tumultuous life from a young age and has just arrived in "Homura", the future seems to be within her reach...

"Five years from now?"

"That's great. Five years from now, Anna will probably be in high school."

He didn't think that Anna, who didn't even go to elementary school, would be able to attend high school, but he nodded slightly.

"What about you, Tatara?"

"Yes, I guess I should write too!"

After saying that, Anna watched Totsuka go down to the bar, then he went to his room and took a pen.

"Here, King, write something too."

"What do you mean?"

"Everything is fine. As long as it is written in your own handwriting, it is fine."

When Anna went down to the bar, she heard loud voices. Totsuka is about to give Suoh a pen while he drinks at the counter, and Kusanagi is polishing a glass and tidying up.

"If you can't think of anything to write, just sign it. Oh, I can think of an interesting King signature that I think would sell well."

"Don't sell, don't sell. What are you talking about?"

While she was there, Totsuka noticed her and greeted her.

"Anna, were you able to write the letter?"

She nodded and approached Totsuka.

"Did you write a letter to yourself, Tatara?"

"Eh? I didn't write it to myself. What I, or rather we wrote, was a letter to the future Anna."

Totsuka picked up the paper from the counter and held it up with the back facing Anna.

"Hey, we write too!"

Yata, who was sitting on the couch, raised his fist and said that happily. Kamamoto also shook his belly and laughed.

"It's like a message and it's fun."

"I made sure Saruhiko writes too!"

"You are very persistent, Misaki."

Totsuka folded the paper that seemed to have everyone's messages written on it and said, "Will you let me put them with yours?" and pointed to Anna's envelope containing a letter addressed to her future self.

Suoh watched the scene without thinking.

"It's letter from the past."

When they got home from school, Kusanagi said that and handed an envelope to Anna.

Anna was stunned for a moment, then immediately remembered that event from five years ago. At that point, she entrusted the envelope to Kusanagi, who laughed and said, "I agree to deliver the letter in five years."

She accepted it gently and opened the seal.

[I don't know what to say to my future self, so I'll write down my current feelings, no matter what happens in the future, I'm glad I got Mikoto's red. I'm glad I came to this red place. That is what I think.]

That's what was written on the paper in childish and clumsy characters.

A lot has happened since then. Suoh and Totsuka are no longer there. Anna became the "King" who inherited the red of Suoh, and she also chose to part with the red by destroying the Slate.

Even so, she never felt any regret that betrayed her feelings when she wrote that letter. She also took out another piece of paper. There were messages written with various letters.

[How is the future Anna? Are you having a fun life? Anna is smart and she can do anything, so I hope you can do whatever you want. LOVE! Tatara Totsuka.]

[I'm sure Anna will be a wonderful big sister in five years. If you have any problems, please tell me in the future. I will always support you. Izumo Kusanagi.]

[Have you started laughing and talking? I don't know much about you yet, but I'm sure we'll be good friends in five years. Be careful! Yata.]

[Anna, have you grown up? You're probably still growing, so eat plenty! I'll tell you about any delicious restaurant! Rikio Kamamoto.]

Looking at the letters on the paper, Anna's mouth went slack and she could almost hear his voice.

In the corner of the notebook, Suoh's name was written in a slightly deformed font, probably forced to write by Totsuka. With the same letter on that side,

That was there.

Anna's expression looked like she was crying and laughing when she heard those words from someone who had lived the life he wanted and then passed away.

"It's okay. I'm living my life the way I want."

Solarpunk Game Ideas: CRPGs

Here I go on with my ideas for Indie Solarpunk games, that are not some sort of building sim or farming sim - and of course I cannot do this without mentioning CRPGs.

Mind you, despite what you might think given that over the course of the last year I have barely played anything but a certain CRPG (BG3), CRPGs are actually not really a genre of game I am super into, even though some of my favorite games are CRPGs. But as a genre in general I usually like faster paced games a lot more. It is just that when I hyperfocus on something that usually is a result of me getting obsessed with a character from it - and that is more likely to happen with a CRPG than with a metroidvania.

But how to do a Solarpunk CRPG?

The Issue:

Look, there really are not any CRPGs right now that are in any way Solarpunk. And I would argue this goes again back to the issue that people struggle with telling stories within a Solarpunk setting, as they are too set in the idea that a) Solarpunk needs to be an utopian setting (or a setting that pretends to be utopian) and b) that utopian settings will not allow for any conflict whatsoever. Additionally there is of course also the issue that most CRPGs do involve violence in form of fighting, which is what a lot of people struggle with - even though some amazing indie games like Disco Elysium have shown very well, that you can do a CRPG without a combat system.

So, let's go over some ideas for Solarpunk CRPGs.

Idea #1: Off-Brand Princess Mononoke

If you follow me for any time, you might know that to me there is no movie or piece of media that is more Solarpunk than Princess Mononoke. And thankfully we can easily build a sort of CRPG around it, either with a similar historical setting or just a fullon fantasy setting. Because remember: Solarpunk does not need to be Science Fiction!

No matter whether you go with a historical setting or just a full-on fantasy setting, the idea is fairly easy: The player character has a magical problem and they need the help of some sort of spirits. As they travel to the place of the spirit, they find out that the spirits are in a war with some group of humans, that are encroaching of the home of the spirits, because they try to access some sort of ressources, driving the spirits nearly to extinction. The player would have the choice in the end which side to join - or whether they will try to broker peace between spirits and humans.

Bonus: You'd have several choices how to play the game - but it is not a clear cut "good" and "evil", especially when the humans might have good reasons to need the ressource.

Idea #2: A SciFi Conspiracy

This idea is very much for a somewhat shorter game. Think a bit more like "Shadowrun Returns". Something that has more like 15 to 20 minutes of a runtime.

We go with the idea I brought up in one of the other ideas before: We have a Solarpunk world, that runs on mainly anarchist principles, and there are some arguments going about over some of the security mechanisms. (Anarchy can after all not properly work, if some people have weapons and others don't have - but you cannot undo the existence of weapons.) Our main character is part of some security force, that mostly are just trained to deescalate situations, but are in some cases allowed to use force.

And when a group of pro-capitalists or maybe even actual fascists start a conspiracy to take over the government, and they already have some co-conspirators in all positions. And the main characters need to navigate this with a mixture of diplomacy and violence, with the player getting a fairly good influence on how this plays out.

Idea #3: A Natural Disaster

Let me take one approach, that is inspired by one of the most Solarpunk movies, that is not by Ghibli: Misaki no Mayogai. That movie takes place after the Tohoku earthquake and is very much about mutual aid in the community.

And here is the thing: No, CRPGs do not need to have combat. So this is an idea for a CRPG without combat. We have a natural disaster of some sort. Honestly it does not matter. An earthquake, a flood, a vulcano... Can be anything. It just did destroy a lot of stuff in a big area. And the game is very much about rebuilding after this disaster, about people helping each other through mutual aid, and then building something better from it. It could feature a society going full Solarpunk if you want to (like a positive post-apocalypse) or just something getting a bit better. Build back better and such.

A deep dive on the contrasting themes of tbhk (misogyny/breaking gender stereotypes) 🖊️

Tbhk or better know as Toilet-bound hanako kun is a manga both written and illustrated by two woman, that is semi-nonfiction-fiction. It uses themes and/or topics of the supernatural, yet taking place in an accurate highschool setting. The creators of Tbhk, AidaIro, are both presumably in their late 20s, as a past work of theirs, was made in 2011, when they were still students. if we estimate they were both 15 in 2011, they would be 28-29 years old respectively. Despite being on the younger side, and despite both being girls, AidaIro seems very traditional in the sense of norms and values. Yet, they seem open to breaking those same values.

for example, many gender norms are broken. Those being:

Akane/Aoi. This relationship trope has been set up to be the very one sided obsessed type. And it’s not very common to see the guy, be the hopelessly obsessed one. Akane, in a primarily female dominated field.

Kou. A key trait of his is that he’s always cooking or cleaning. He’s the housekeeper, he’s an incredible cook, and he takes care of his little sister. That being a primarily female dominated field.

the contrast to those being: sexism. Examples:

The woman in this manga, do practically nothing. Despite the main character being female, trust me when i say Nene did more heavy lifting in the PILOT CHAPTER.

we don’t see much individuality from any of the woman. Yes aoi’s getting some from akane but at the end of the day you can clearly see no doubt they’re still getting together. Despite all her character growth she’s still just a soon to be wife. And i hate that. I hate that so bad. She had a whole arc where she separated herself from Akane, only spoke to Nene, really stood her ground with boys, only for her to end up right back with him cut it OUTT.

And don’t even get me started on the infantilization of every single woman. I love akane but COME ON. I don’t remember exactly where it is but he’s said things like oh i’d never lay a FINGER on a girl implying he’d never hit a girl which like ok polite thank you but i feel like that shows that he don’t see woman/girls as other people, he views them as more fragile, and that its such a sin to throw a punch at a GIRL. But for guys? nahh nahh he’ll fuck up teru anyday.

every mother in the story ( - Aoi’s), her husband no willing single mothers, just depressed divorced ones. No #feminism#singlemom at all. Aoi’s moms whole character is being divorced, Mitsuba’s moms whole character is being a widow, yet Minamoto’s father (despite being entirely absent) is not known for also being widowed? His wife is dead and he’s not seen as a struggling parent. The single father gets sm grace but he’s clearly having a hard time parenting his own children. Kou doesn’t even set up a spot at their table for him. He’s literally just not there.

Theres a lot more that could be said, but i’m going to just leave it here i’m tired 😭

We Vanguard fans are SERIOUS about our side characters! Let's show some love to the fantastic characters that were given a jarring lack of content in the series! Maybe your favorite character overall is a member of the main cast, but now it's time to pick somebody from the sidelines to appreciate just as much!

Sick Fic:

What a classic we've got here today, folks. You don't necessarily have to write a fic for this (though it's totally encouraged)! Just create anything you want involving those down days. Characters getting sick in fiction can help show off so many neat and hidden traits, so be creative and make whatever you see fit (or not fit, because somebody is sick)!

Pets:

PETS! What more could you even ask for? We've got only a few pets to thrive off of in the show, so lets show some love to them… or maybe think up some original ones! Maybe somebody has a secret pet, or maybe there was a random line of dialogue about a pet at some point? Who knows what could happen, but it ought to be great.

Day 2: Favorite Team | PSYqualia | Memories

Favorite Team:

We've got SO many to choose from! And not even just the main teams like Q4 and TRY3; how about silly little teams like the iconic Miwa-Morikawa-Izaki-Emi squad? Go wild! Whether it be a competitive Vanguard playing team, or just characters that work well together, there's bound to be some really great teams to make stuff for!

PSYqualia:

Now here's something real intriguing… PSYQualia was the fictional power used to communicate with the Planet Cray and the illustrated cards that came from it, but it had drawbacks. Will you represent it in its corruptive origins, or its positive future? Go for it!

Memories:

I'm sure everyone has some kind of fond memories that came from Vanguard, or maybe you'll want to represent how memories are presented by the characters! A large amount of the series revolves around memories, surprisingly enough- Misaki's whole life is pretty much centered around them, and Seasons 2 and 4 seriously threw us for a doozy. Let's make this a day to remember!

Day 3: Favorite Outfit | Fluff | Magic AU

Favorite Outfit:

YIPPEE!!! Maybe that's a little exaggerated, but c'mon- who doesn't love a good outfit. Vanguard's got some seriously cool fits, if not just for the characters, then on the card art! Look around and find your inspiration, or maybe even create an outfit you'd think would be a fan favorite!

Fluff:

No one could ever lie and say they don't like fluff. Sweetness, love, care, and everything in-between. It can be soft, tooth-rotting, comforting! Do as you please and pick out your favorite fantasies for this one, we're sure it'll be more than appreciated.

Magic AU

Vanguard has its fair share of magical elements! But what if they got taken in slightly different way, a step to the left? Or maybe even a leap! Are they all wizardly figures? Magical girls? Maybe there's just something 'magical' in the air? Go wild, throw out a magic-based alternate universe!

Day 4: Favorite Relationship | Betrayal | Cray & Lore

Favorite Relationship:

Besties, lovers, enemies, and everything in-between, everyone loves a compelling relationship. But which one is your favorite? Are you enamored with the way some characters hate each other? Or maybe you just really want to show off your favorite ship! Pick your favorite Vanguard relationship, and if you have multiple? The more the merrier!

Betrayal:

Uh oh… There's no shortage of evil in Vanguard, and betrayal can come from anywhere. Does it coincide with the Reverse, PSYqualia, or maybe just human nature? Pick an act of betrayal or make up your own, because - no matter what, it's gonna hurt real good.

Cray and Lore:

The planet Cray is SO COOL and SO UNEXPLORED! Delve deep into the lore of the planet, or think up something fresh and cool for it! Blaster Blade and Dragonic Overlord are only the tip of this awesome iceberg, and there's endless things to explore!

Day 5: Favorite Episode | Family | Birthday

Favorite Episode:

Can you even believe there's 196 episodes JUST in the original run, and hundreds more after that? With all that Vanguard, you're bound to have some favorite episodes! Let's all skim through the runs and pick a favorite to represent, there's so so so many to enjoy!

Family:

Family comes in all shapes and sizes, and the Vanguard characters became a family over and over again, without a doubt. Choose a family in Vanguard, by blood or not, to create for, and enjoy!

Birthday:

We've got TWO BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK! Today is Mamoru Anjou's birthday, and Kourin Tatsunagi's is on the 13th of October! Show them some extra love, or maybe pick another birthday to celebrate! We love our characters, and their birthdays, whether fictional or not, are always fun.

Day 6: Favorite Clan | Crossover | Secret Identity

Favorite Clan:

I know, I know… This might be an impossible task. But we have to try! Pick a Vanguard clan that you can call your favorite, and show it some appreciation! This can extend out to newer or old standards of clan systems, in any way you like!

Crossover:

Vanguard has endless opportunities to pair up with other series, it's all pretty open! Crossovers are ALWAYS FUN, and it's refreshing to play with other media that we also love! Maybe one of your favorite shows has Vanguard cards in it now, or maybe Vanguard characters are in the book you're reading or new anime you're watching! Who knows, have fun!

Secret Identity:

Oooh… A secret! There's already representation of this trope in Vanguard plenty of times! Remember Ninja Master M, and the Team Unknown debacle? The time Kyou was the Abominable Snowman? Maybe even make up your own, go wild! Whether it's online or behind a mask, there's plenty of ways to hide your identity. But remember- it's a secret!

Day 7: Favorite Parallel | Endings & New Beginnings | FREE

Favorite Parallel:

Contrasting motives in media is probably one of the most exciting things I could ever think of. What contrasts and parallels do you see in Vanguard? Blaster Dark and Blaster Blade, perhaps? Character arcs, episode structures, the lore of the cards and the journey of our protagonists... There's parallels everywhere. Delve deep for this one, and find something really interesting to analyze!

Endings and New Beginnings:

Vanguard has some of our absolute favorite endings and beginnings ever, so why not go ahead and show them off? The transition of each arc, each era, each generation, is something to be celebrated. May it be the end of a big tournament, or the beginning of a new season altogether, or something totally different and unexpected!

I know many people read this chapter when it came out in April. Or in August. I only came across it a few days ago, although I spent a long time looking for where to read it in English. And thanks to @annampoland, who successfully and on a wonderful note ended my search. A kind of New Year's gift ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶

So, many Hatsukoi's fans have finally waited - after 16 years of real time and... a year in the manga - Ritsu to confess "I love you" not in his thoughts, but was not afraid to say it to face, to shout, to open up, saying not the banal three words, but digging a little deeper and more sensually.

In general, I like how in Junjou Romantica, from Misaki's side, Nakamura-san presents "I love you" in very different words. They always sound different, but they sound so beautiful and sincere that sometimes Misaki himself doesn't understand what he blurted out:"D But everyone instantly understands the meaning of what he said. As Usagi said, “I use so many sentences to express, to convey feelings, and you only need a couple of words for that”

But let's get back to Ritsu.

These idiots (along with Masamune) did so many thoughtless things (okay, 15-18 years old - teenagers, children), brought each other so much pain that they remembered it for the next 10 years, but it was this pain and the feelings they experienced that made Ritsu and Takano who they are. It was truly painful to watch them both suffer.

I liked someone's theory about Proporsen Hen, that when Ritsu put a patch on Takano's finger, and Takano put a patch on Onodera's finger, "getting married". Like, this is not only a chapter in the context of the wedding frame, but also a symbolic meaning that after so many years, Ritsu and Takano finally healed each other's wounds.

They found each other, felt sympathy suddenly (and according to Takano, he also didn't intend to fall in love with anyone, but... it happened), common work, constant contact and Ritsu began to soften, and Takano began to understand that no one really abandoned him, and all this pride and "tsundere mode" is just a disguise. An attempt to hide himself.

I would really like for them to actually sit down in one of the chapters, talk sincerely, about what worried them before and now. Saruhiko is even more tragic to me because not even the actions he chooses to make as an attempt of self-destruction are truly his, it's just his paranoia at most. :( He can't feel truly happy while untreated because his mental illness will I always make him feel displaced without him even knowing.

Yesss, that’s one of the saddest things about Fushimi to me: he makes all these bad decisions to avoid being left behind by Yata, when Yata was literally never planning on leaving him behind at all. Fushimi’s upbringing has basically conditioned him to think that everyone will abandon him eventually, that anything he cares about will be destroyed, and that he basically can’t rely on anyone except himself (Gora once referred to it in a blog post as ‘loneliness so deep he didn’t even realize he was alone,’ like just put arrow to my heart why don’t you). When he meets Yata that starts to change but even Yata can’t really erase years of Fushimi being told implicitly that he’s not worth caring about, that the only person who will even give him attention is the guy who just likes seeing him miserable. Fushimi gets a self esteem boost from Yata calling him amazing but even that’s a fragile thing — I think Fushimi basically puts all his belief in that ‘amazing,’ that okay now he can be by Yata’s side because as long as he keeps being amazing Yata will never leave him. There has to be a reason because otherwise Fushimi can’t fathom why Yata would be different than all the other people who have overlooked him or left him behind, but if he’s amazing to Misaki that’s, as LSW puts it, ‘a real thing that he achieved.’ 

But then they fail with the jungle surprise party and suddenly Fushimi isn’t amazing and Mikoto is, and Fushimi basically all on his own assumes he’s no longer enough. He feels uncomfortable in Homra because unlike Yata, who I think yearns for a community, Fushimi has always felt that he can’t belong in a group unless he has some measure of usefulness that would make them want to keep him there. Fushimi immediately decides that he can’t fit in at Homra so he pretty much makes that feeling a self-fulfilling prophecy — even to the point that when Kusanagi straight-up says ‘I hope you can always stay in Homra’ Fushimi manages to twist that in his head as being something that proves he doesn’t fit in Homra, because Kusanagi would never say that to Yata.

 While Yata definitely makes his own mistakes as far as their relationship is concerned — Yata manages to completely miss how out of place Fushimi feels, and he just assumes Fushimi feels the same way about Homra that he does without even asking if that’s actually the case — most of their breakup is due to reasons made up entirely in Fushimi’s mind. He assumes that because Yata has other friends there’s no way he would choose Fushimi over them (no one has ever chosen Fushimi before, after all) and Fushimi refuses to have the single honest conversation that would solve all his problems because he’s convinced himself that Yata was always leaving him behind and there’s no point in talking about it. I think that’s part of what makes him so compelling as a character, because Fushimi is basically trapped in a self destruction spiral of his own making and refuses to try and escape it, and meanwhile the people who care about him are all trying in their own ways to convince him that it doesn’t need to be this way.

Everyone stood in the room, unfortunately, one was already dead. A warning from the gods, taunting each one of them. Luca was near Feli’s body, looking distraught. Angel was looking at Feli's dead body with confusion, anger? It was hard to tell with your own tears. 

Misaki was holding your sleeve, you could feel them shake through their grip. Everyone was distraught except for Ronin. You looked up at the devil beanie holder. After knowing him for a long time, you could see that he was pissed in his eyes. 

You know that someone in this room killed the other. Other than Feli, there was Luca, V, Misaki, Ronin, Angel, then you. One of you killed her, you were locked in this building and only one was getting out. 

“Why, Feli? Who did this? Who killed her?!” Luca got up and with tears in his eyes, you knew he was gonna try and kill the killer. He walked up to Ronin, grabbing his leather jacket and pulling him closer. “Was it you?”

“Luca!” Angel called out, she walked over to him and put her hand on his arm. “Calm down! We can figure this out!” 

Luca looked at her before pushing Ronin away, he brushed his jacket off. “Jeez, guess lover boy here can kill on purpose.” Luca whipped his head around, about to throw down until V grabbed his arms. 

“Luca, stop. We need to figure this out together. Not against each other.” V was also distressed but he knew how to hold his emotions well. You could see how sad he was to see one of the people he cared about was dead. 

You looked back at Misaki, letting the four fight it out themselves. She was still stressed out, you took your arm to pull her close and rub her shoulder. “Hey, we’ll figure this out, promise.” They hesitated to nod her head, and her grip wasn’t any better, still shaking like her life dependent on it. 

Taking a few more glances of her then to the four again. It seems they have calmed down somewhat. Luca was no longer in V’s arms, Angel was next to Ronin, probably his buffer. 

You sighed as you pulled yourself and Misaki closer to the rest of the group. As you looked closer to the body, you could see her battered body from falling from the stairs. Someone pushed her down, you felt bad for her. She didn’t deserve this. Looking back at Luca, you grabbed his sleeve. He looked at you with his bloodshot eyes from crying. Pulling him into a small side hug, as your other side was occupied by Misaki.

“Alright,” V spoke up. “From here on, each one of us will group up. We have six(6) people here, so three pairs. I’ll go with Ronin, Misaki and Reader can go as they are holding Reader’s sleeve. And that leaves Angel and Luca. Anybody reject it?”

Everyone was quiet.

“Then it’s finalized. Ronin and I will find a way out from the left side of the building, and Angel and Luca, is it fine if you look at the right side?” V continued. He wanted to leave, but he also didn’t want to see anyone else dead.

“Yeah, that’s fine. Right, Luca?” Angel responded, she slightly nudged him, making him nod in response. You looked over at Misaki, they seemed better, still startled by seeing one of her friends dead.

“Reader and Misaki will look around near the center, see if there’s anything, if not, find another one of the pair.” V looked over at you and Misaki, he holds trust to you, there shouldn’t be a reason to not to. Right?

But you nod, you started to pull Misaki with you, away from the others, it seemed she spoke. “Sorry for… that reaction.” 

You look over to them. “It’s fine, Misaki, I mean, Feli died, one of our friends. You have a reason for that reaction. Everyone did.” She let go of your sleeve, giving a small, pitiful smile.

“Right.” As she said that one word. As both of you stood there, looking around. The lights went out, as you were about to say something to Misaki, you felt a grab on your shoulder, it wasn’t small like Misaki, but a bit larger, maybe V? Ronin? But they didn’t speak. Pulling you away from the location you were with Misaki. Wait, was Misaki with you?

As the person let you go in some random room, you heard the door lock. You are now stuck here. With no one. How are you getting into such dumb situations? Luckily, when trying to walk around the room and bumping into almost every item, there was a laundry shoot. And deciding to go into it, you fell into the basement into some basket. Getting out of it, you were now trapped in another blackened room. 

“Fuck me…” You grumbled, you are in another unfamiliar room. 

“Thanks for the invitation, but maybe another time, Darlin’. There’s still a killer on the loose.” You heard the familiar voice but started screaming loudly. A hand slipped over your mouth. “Shush. Damn, you gotta scream my ears off?” You could hear his smug smile through the darkness. 

You pull his hand away, “Ronin.” About to continue the sentence, you heard Angel scream. Both of you got worried and started running out of the basement. You found V and Luca in the living room on the right side of the building, then Angel running in. She was out of breath as the rest of you. 

“M- Misaki…” She gasped for air as her hand was over her mouth. She looked mortified. “Sh-she’s dead. I- I found their body in the st- study.” 

Ronin, almost immediately, grabbed her into a hug. Even though he might be an ass. Ronin would help Angel for anything. Both Luca and V walked into the study to see it. You decided to help Ronin to calm down Angel. 

Almost a few moments later, Luca walked in. “I… Shit… Feli.. now Misaki… Seriously, who is the killer?” He looked at the three in the room. “Because once I-”

“Luca, stop with the threats.” V walked back in. He looks at Angel and holds her shoulder for a moment. “Misaki… was bashed with what seemed like a lamp.” V immediately looked at Ronin. “That kind of seems to be your mo, Ronin.”

“Man, you must be shitting me, V. I was with you before the lights went down.” He crossed his arms at V. Angel was watching this fight, then looked at you.

“Reader was paired with Misaki, what about them?” Angel popped up. Then everyone looked at you. 

“I was with them, but when the lights went out. I pulled out of the room. They were alive when the lights went out!” You raised your hands to show surrendering. 

“Pulled out?” Angel replied back. You nod. “Why, and how?”

“I honestly don’t know, but whoever is killing, either made sure I left the room, or someone protected me, I don’t know.” You dropped your hands as you looked over to the two. “I know when I was put into another room, the door was locked.”

“Then how did you reach the basement?” Even Ronin is ganging up on you with Angel. 

“Laundry shoot.”

He stared you down for a bit then Luca joined in, “Basement? I thought you and V were together on the left side of this place?”

“We got separated when the lights turned off,” V was clearly thinking. “Reader was with Misaki until the lights turned off, then was dragged away. Me and Ronin were together until we got separated and the lights went off as well. Angel, Luca.” He looked up at both of them. Luca clearly still pissed off about Feli dying, while Angel was distraught. 

“We were together even when the lights got shut off. We actually stayed in one room throughout it.” Angel stepped closer to Luca. 

Everyone was quiet. There were only five(5) people left. 

“I still think it’s Ronin.” Luca piped up. “There was no way it wasn’t him. After Misaki’s….” He dragged off but everyone knew what he was meaning to say. 

“Are you serious, what about Mr. Saint here? V was also alone after it went dark.” 

V looked at Ronin after he said that. His attitude seemed to have changed. “Ronin, I was still near the room when the lights went out. Meanwhile, you were not. You were on a whole other floor, you still have yet to explain that.”

“It’s Ronin, how can it not? After all, Misaki’s head was bashed in with a lamp. There is no way, it’s not.” Luca started going off, Angel cut him off fortunately before he could continue.

“I agree. Ronin, this… murder… was kinda of your MO. There isn’t a way it’s not.” Angel spoke up, dropping her hand from Luca’s mouth. 

“Seriously, Angel, after everything we've been through.” You see his strained smile. He was trying. “Darlin’, you believe me, right?” 

You can see his smile drop when you walk closer to Angel, V, and Luca. “Sorry, but… it was suspicious how you were in the basement.”

Before Ronin spoke up, V got in front of you three. “A vote was counted. Ronin…”

“Sending me to hell? Right, V?” 

Unable to see this anymore, you walked out. You couldn’t see someone getting killed in front of you, and it seems Angel thought the same. Angel sighed.

“We can leave, right?” She looks at you with hope. You didn’t know the answer. Luca walked out, holding her shoulder. 

“Hopefully.” 

V walked out with his hands coated with red. Ronin’s gone. Now there’s four(4). But it wasn’t over yet.

There you were with V and Luca. Angel… was dead. She was in the indoor pool. Drowned. Either she was knocked out and pushed in… or someone was covering their tracks. 

After last night, you found out the door was still locked with the digital door screen saying, “Killer still on the loose. No one may leave yet.”

Angel had a breakdown last night, so V decided to stay with Angel to comfort her. She couldn’t handle thinking she accidentally killed her friend.

Luca looked at V with anger in his eyes, after everything, everything leads to him. He was with Angel, not being with his pair partner and leading to Misaki, and then Feli. Anger was an understatement for his feelings. Leading V to his demise.

“And with the vote, V was killed, leading Reader to win this round. Contrats, Reader.” Vince spoke out. Even clapping to your win. 

“What?!” Luca screamed out. “IT WAS THEM?! WHAT THE FUCK?!” 

Your stomach was hurting with how much you were laughing.

“I got to say, Darlin’. That was impressive.” 

Misaki groaned, “Can’t believe my chaos twin would kill me though, such a shame.”

“I did not think that playing doctor would betray me. Using it to your advantage. Impressive.”

“I still can’t believe you would kill me first, then using Luca’s emotions like that. Damn, glad we have you on our side.” 

“And using that V would be staying with me but protecting Luca in case of you killing him! That was smart!”

You were still proud, sure, it was such a death game against everyone in the server, especially since you weren’t a killer. But playing as a single mafia? You ruled. Sitting back into your chair as another round was starting, and this time you got the doctor. Time to save some people.

Akahane Academy (Visual Novel)

Akahane Academy is a parody and it knows it. All of the male characters the player meets in the beginning are yanderes, and all with long chins that will stab you through the chest. There are three different yanderes, all of which are kind of unique in their own way. The intended play is to go from top to bottom when it comes to routes, so I'll try to follow that order when writing this review.

The player heads to Akahane academy to meet up with their club leader, Yukina-san, the neko girl, who seems to be rivals with the main character. She tells the player that she's left a surprise for them in the classroom, to which they walk in and find three different guys, Hiro, the blonde cheerful one, Misaki the black more mysterious one and Yuusei the more aloof one. From there, the player can interact with them and get their route.

Starting with Hiro, the player stalks to him about some of the manga that they like, and finds out that he's in the cooking club. He shows the player around the home economics room, and lets the player have a taste of cherrypie that he just baked. However, upon taking the pie out, the player smells a strong iron smell, and sees that the pie has a human face stretched out on it. Hiro reveals that he killed all of the player's friends and turned them into pies so that no one else could have them.

If the player goes with Masaki, he starts to brood on about how nobody understands him (complete with an emo wolf in the background), until the player tries to resonate with him. Shocked by this development, he falls in love for the first time and ends up telling them that they will be together forever and ever.

Finally, if the player goes with Yuusei, he will continue to stare at her, sort of breaking waiting for them to notice him until Yuki-san enters the room. She states that this entire thing was revenge for winning the science fair, where she worked really hard on her project and the player won by... making something they don't even understand. As revenge, she ends up making the three boys to ruin their life. She ends up leaving and the player is now stuck with the three yandere boys.

As I've said, very much a parody, since they call everyone weeby names and have dumb things go on but it's great and I like it. Definitely the most "serious" route is Hiro's route since we actually do get to see him basically cook all of the player's friends (which explains why we see such few people in the school anyways and the fact that the Home Eco's room is mysteriously covered in blood. It's probably the most scary route in the entire game and it's a shock because it's likely the first one that you play. The other two are a lot more lax, with Masaki's being probably the most tame (and funniest one) since it plays on the trope of an overly emo/brooding male lead, and the image of him sitting under a tree with a wolf to symbolize his brooding side is actually hilarious. He falls in love and becomes rather protective afterwards but there isn't really too much after that. Masaki's has even less than that but there are little flashes of him smiling as he talks to the player and his figure becomes more creepy as it goes on. It gets interjected by Yuki-san revealing her whole plot of making three yandere guys to ruin the player's life (though I'll be honest so far the only one who actually did anything was Hiro after cooking all of those weird blood pies). Still, it really does lean into the weeby OWO UWU type of writing and it is pretty fun to play since nothing is really taken that seriously. Also man, those chins are so sharp I could probably cut cheese with them.

Anyways, short game, pretty fun. Lots of dumb moments. I enjoyed it! If you like more parody games/ comedic type of yandere games, try this one out- it's short and it likes to make fun of itself which I can always appreciate.

Everyone's familiar (and sick) of the Buddy Daddies being compared to Spy x Family thing. But I was thinking and realized something funny--

In SxF Yor and Loid try hard to look happy & married for the facade and their fake family. In BD Kazuki and Rei never really try that ? they're already written to act and look like "an old married couple" (director's words)

And yet the side characters (like Anna, Shigeki, the moms) think (know) they're more than friends who have a daughter together.

I think that's also one of the reasons why I like Kurusu family dynamic more. Because it feels more real and is never an act and they never try to make their family seem "properly real" in the way the Forger's try to seem perfect. I mean at the start they're like "ok we gotta play pretend family!" but post ep 3 it was all natural lol

After Rei accepts himself as Miri's father and after their talk with Misaki, they're already committed to Miri, and I remember watching SXF and just thinking WHEN are things gonna move forward?? The slowburn is burning too slow I'M IMPATIENT when is loid gonna accept anya as his daughter--

Sure, Yor and Loid are strangers, compared to Kazuki and Rei who have lived together for 3+ years.. and share a bank account... But it feels like they're still stuck at that "strangers" bit for the whole first season. I'd call them acquaintances even lol. But I get it, SxF is slower and has more of a slowburn, VS Buddy Daddies that had 12 episodes + 4 cd dramas. But even then, BD was easier for me to get attached to. (But also. I'd absolutely KILL to have BD have 2+ seasons like uhhhh yes give me all the "unnecessary" fillers and random stuff, I want to see it all, anything, I'll take it. ANYTHING. PLEASEEEE)

Also I'd call SXF a pretty vanilla anime, it's meant for all ages, it has a lot of genres that appeal to a wide range of audience (like romance, comedy, action, fictional fantasy (mind reading, loid's costumes...)), it has a fun concept, nice characters... It doesn't have blood, death, the idea that the main characters could die, no lives are at stake, it doesn't have the same approach to childcaring like BD has (the whole daycare episode, oof), it doesn't have same sex parents.
