Seriously-- dragon. For some reason, a lot of my dragons have a real possessive streak, and while Minglian certainly wouldn't be the worst offender of the bunch, she can be prone to it every now and then with someone she cares for. Unlike some of the others (Zhaohui and Huaxiu) she at least tries to behave. So it's a bit more subtle on her end-- sidling up to her partner and taking their hand, a smile that's just a little bit forced, things like that. Now for a partner being possessive, she'd also like it because it probably presents an opportunity and excuse to get a little bit greedy with their attention and allow herself a little bit of selfishness having their eyes only on her. Plus, the aforementioned opportunity for closeness pleeaase. Get in her space, she'd love it.

The bridges connected the four castles to the main palace of the Aegis begin to rise, limiting the movement of land-bound guests. Imperial guards start to collect at the main entrances.

Baphomet(@soulsxng) does the shadowy sneaky sneaks and discovers that Minglian is with Tahariel and the others. He communicates this to Eno before non-Cythonian magical communications within the vicinity of the Aegis become blocked.

Wrenn and Qai find Chercia and Jinx(@fatestouch). In a moment of panic and haste, Wrenn informs Chercia that Tristan is not her father in hopes of convincing her to leave with them. She is eventually talked into at least following Wrenn and Qai for answers by Jinx.

Enoch and Jai(@soulsxng) continue talking with Huaxiu and Jianhuren(@arcxnumvitae), eventually informing them that they are in search for a pair of people and that Princess Minglian is with them and thus may be in danger.

Without the communications via Rozum, Princess Lazuli panics when she is cut off from reaching the South Castle, where her daughter Kyrie might possibly be, due to the bridges rising. King Hatius offers to fly her to the castle. They are mistaken for Tahariel and Allisae. Hatius is shot in the wing with an arrow, supposedly by an Aegis guard. Hatius, angered, threatens war for being injured when he had come as a guest to the Empire.

Rylenn begins to head back to the Aegis.

Avelan finds his husband Cecil(@fatestouch) to help him find his sister.

Edmund finds Souji(@akumanoken) to help him find Allisae and Tahariel, though he starts to question whether it was right of him to stop them from leaving.

Nero finds a place alone and begins to write in his notebook with his Aidonean Glass quill.

“Vasilios,” Huaxiu approached with a small frown on his lips. “What exactly is a ‘simp’? Minglian turned red when I asked her.”

Surprise fluttered across pale features, blue eyes widening. Where did the dragon learn such a word? He remained silent for a moment wondering if it, in fact, had been him that had used it before but nothing came to mind. "Simp, hm?" A soft chuckle is released, his arm snaking around the other and drawing Huaxiu in close as a playful smirk began to tug at the edges of his lips.

"Well, you see, a simp, at least in this situation, is someone who... is head over heels for another." While that was true for them, perhaps he should make it clear that's not the only thing it could mean. Last thing they need is for Huaxiu to use the term and someone misunderstand his meaning. "But generally it means someone who would be willing to do anything to get someone else's attention and affection. And not always in the best way.” Then again... he certainly would have been willing to do anything to get Huaxiu’s attention during those horrible times not too long ago. So, perhaps he is the true simp, in every way.

“Don’t worry, I’m a simp for you too.” Instead of dwelling on the many things he’d have been willing to do back then, he decided to leave it playful, even following it with a wink towards the dragon.

Minglian’s relationship with Huaxiu and Zhaohui

"Laoshi is the best teacher!" Unknowingly, looking not dissimilar to how Huaxiu did when given the opportunity to praise her, Minglian broke out into a bright smile.

"And Shifu is also the best teacher as well, I'm incredibly lucky to have them both care so much for me. I love most of the time with Laoshi, so I guess he's also something of my caretaker? Back when I was first created, when I was still learning how to do certain things, it was him there who would help me! I remember him showing me ways to do my hair." Though at that time, she had been without emotions, so the moment itself had been lost on her.

"He cooks, cleans, fusses," she giggled. "Not much different from someone's overly doting parent, isn't he? But I can always count on Laoshi no matter what! He's, I suppose he's someone that I can easily say I have unconditional trust in." She trusted the others too, of course, but something about Shifu and Laoshi felt especially special.

"As for Zhao-ge, I guess you could say he's like a fun uncle?" Or maybe she shouldn't say "uncle", lest she get drawn into another bit of dramatics about him being old. "The one who will encourage me to skip training to join him and eat a dessert together instead. I have fun with him! While Laoshi sometimes coddles me, I think, I feel that Zhao-ge is a little more willing to tell me the truth of things." Her voice lowered into a conspiratorial whisper, "So I go to him to ask things I know that Laoshi won't give me a straight answer about."

Idle cuddling. Closeness with a SO is already nice, and she's the type to enjoy doing their respective hobbies (for her that'd likely wind up being sketching or drawing something) or whatever in close proximity. To that end, if the idle working and cuddling leads to a stray kiss here or there, and that stray kiss leads to a little more, well, she certainly wouldn't be complaining.

Someone who can't cook. Or to be more specific, someone who can't cook and shows no interest in learning because "it's too hard." The world these days is a wide and wondrous place with all sorts of guides and resources. The person doesn't have to have any innate talent or even be good at it, there's just something about not even wanting to try that she finds bleh.

“He isn’t kidnapping anyone…” Allisae finally looked to Minglian, hoping to convince the other princess that, despite the threats, leaving the garden alive was still a possibility for her and that no one else would be in any danger if she were to turn heel and stay quiet. “I and my children are going willingly…please, we are only waiting for them to return so that we could all leave quietly…”

Minglian's expression turned to one of surprise. The woman wasn't being kidnapped? The princess actually wanted to go with him? ...Him? It would have been difficult to believe if she hadn't heard it from her own lips, and the news only left Minglian feeling slightly more aggrieved towards the man at the way her own life had been put in danger. This was all over some personal drama and yet he had threatened to kill her! He could have simply explained the situation first before threatening her life!

"If you really are going of your own free will..." Minglian's lips pursed together and she shot a look at the man. "If you'll let me leave then, I'll go and not cause any trouble. I think you should be speaking to him then, rather than me." He seemed like he cared greatly for the woman at least, regardless of his lack of manners. The woman seemed genuine in her claim, and had advocated for no bloodshed. If she spoke on her behalf, then things should likely be okay...

Jianhuren, in actuality, is not very good at asking for help. Since they’re so used to being the eldest of the dragons and the one that others come to for help, they developed a habit of keeping any negativity to themselves. Especially after the ordeal with Qingshan, which actually causes them a great amount of pain and distress.

Jianhuren is not a good cook at all. Not for lack of skill or patience but they tend to space out or get distracted whenever doing so, coupled with the fact that they don’t ever have to cook often to begin with, leads to it being better if they do food prep or cleanup instead. Many a time has something accidentally caught on fire at the oven with Jianhuren right there in the same room

It was Qingshan who introduced Huaxiu to spicier food, she took him out to eat one day and, deciding to mess with her stuffy little student, decided to order the spiciest dish on the menu for him. Needless to say she was surprised when he loved it. 

She can make simple dishes but is by no means extremely skilled, mainly because she didn’t have any interest in cultivating her culinary skill. Also, she was the one mainly putting out the fires in Jianhuren’s kitchen.

Despite all of his talk about how he no longer associates himself with the red eyes anymore and is only willing really to bother with Jianhuren at all, Zhaohui still unintentionally finds himself slipping into that “Us/Them” mentality that the other red eyes are prone to. That is, he tends to default to still considering the red eyes like comrades and others as, well, outsiders to their affairs.

Due to the curse placed on him by the gods for his betrayal, his pain tolerance is astronomically high. And once the curse is removed? Not many wounds would faze him or cause him pause at all.

Huaxiu is by no means a lightweight and can hold his liquor extremely well. One of his favorite pastimes when he was younger was to go to lavish tea houses, listen to the entertainment, order food and wine, and dazzle others with his looks, tolerance, and clearly wealthy disposition. Basically, he was a rich boy who liked indulging himself (maybe it was a byproduct of the years spent training under Qingshan where he lived more simply)

In his library, Huaxiu has countless ancient books and documents that are old enough to be in a museum. Among those, hidden away, are a few certain “books” he obtained when he was younger before he even met Jiao. As time went and he grew older he considered throwing them away, but by that point they were old enough to be considered historical artifacts, and so they remained, although hidden away inside thicker and boring texts so that no one would ever find them. He forgets they’re even there most of the time but would definitely die from embarrassment if anyone ever found them.

In the few instances she’s encountered him, and of course in the future, Meihui calls Huaxiu “gege” but really she doesn’t have to. They’re extremely close in age by dragon standards, with her being 2,000 and Huaxiu 2,500, so he’s not nearly older enough for her to call him that. It’s just a testament to her teasing personality and her messing a bit with how he tends to act.

Meihui and Xiaodan visit Jianhuren for New Years not only because of their fond feelings for the elder of course, but also because even with Qingshan there before, Jianhuren’s other pupil was always noticeably absent and didn’t often come by to visit. They didn’t want Jianhuren to get lonely.

Not every dragon in existence was created by the Dragon God like how all of the red eyes were made by him, Meihui for example wasn’t. But Xiaodan was and it was the Dragon God himself who put the seal on his powers during the time he was searching for Jianhuren. Due to this connection, he’s a little bit more familiar with the deity than any “normal” dragons.

He doesn’t look it at all but he actually has a soft spot for kids! He just doesn’t know how to act around them but he finds them very cute. Of note is in the future when Xianzi comes around, anytime Meihui shows up to help train her guess who just so happens to be there with her? Don’t point it out though or he’ll get huffy.

It may not look it but Vasilios ends up having a hefty influence on Minglian just like Huaxiu. Namely, from him teaching her and showing her how he builds things started a love for creation for her. Afterwards, Minglian will find herself interested in drawing, painting, and playing instruments and shows a talent in all of it too. 

Her favorite flower is the lotus. Not because of her name (Lian 莲 means lotus) but because she became enamored with the lotus flowers that grew in the lake at Huaxiu’s estate.

Bonus third: While at first Huaxiu just handled both of their laundry, eventually after their emotions being returned Minglian asked to be in charge of her own stuff. Huaxiu was a bit confused but agreed, not realizing that it was because the embarrassment and realization hit her all of a sudden that he was handling all of her clothes, underthings included. Huaxiu doesn’t know the reason but if he did he still wouldn’t get it because he was the one who picked out and bought them in the first place, and thus has already seen them.

I'd like to hear about Jianhuren's relationship with the dragon god, vs Minglian's relationship with the dragon god!

I hope you don't mind if I answer this myself actually, because I think it might be a little clearer than having each of them speak on it! Plus, I'm able to offer more thoughts on it than they really have, for reasons discussed below.

The Red Eyes overall actually don't have that much of a relationship with the Dragon God! He creates/d them at the directive of the Jade Emperor so that they can serve the pantheon as a whole, but aside from that he has very little personal interactions with them. So out of the dragons, the only one that really has a relationship with him is actually Xiaodan due to him being a dragon that the Dragon God created that didn't have to do with anything regarding orders from the higher-ups at all.

He does care to an extent for the dragons, and along with Longmu (another goddess associated with dragons), they're kind of the only deities of the pantheon who advocate for the Red Eyes. They were the two who opposed stripping the Red Eyes of their emotions, not that it could amount to much in the end in the face of the Jade Emperor.

So, aside from when she was created and some other general meetings things, Minglian's never really spoken with him! So she doesn't have many thoughts on him since he's not really a figure in her life aside from being part of the gods she serves.

Jianhuren has interacted with him more on account of their longer life and being the first Red Eye, but even then they don't feel any particularly strong bond to him either.

13. Is your character bothered by the sight of blood? If so, in what way?

Not really, or at least not in a way like a phobia of blood. She's not necessarily upset by the sight of it, but she would be concerned about the source if it's with another person. Basically, it's just a signpost to be wondered whether someone's injured. Granted, she hasn't come across a lot of blood or worrying wounds since she's often around her dragon companions, and even small cuts and things heal quickly. So she's also not used to having to worry about seeing blood either.

26. How does your character behave around children?

Minglian thinks they're the cutest things! She's a natural around them and she's absolutely the kind of person where if a random kid walks up to her holding out a toy telephone, you better believe she's taking it and pretending to answer it. Some of her other dragons are a bit weird around kids because of inexperience, yet Minglian herself doesn't have that issue. Maybe it's despite her youth, or perhaps because of it.

37. Is your character more concerned with defending their honor, or protecting their status?

Honor. What does she care about status in the long run? Honor seems like it pertains to personality and things of actual merit worth caring about. Status is something that happens irrespective of how good a person you are or not, or how bad. She's not much concerned about that.

The moment Minglian spoke up, all eyes were on her. Where it seemed that the two Vasyrus weren't all too surprised to see her, the Ahnian man was another story. Though he didn't speak, he cradled the woman in his arms closer to his chest, like she was something special to him, and narrowed his eyes at the newcomer in an icy glare.

"Ah...no need to apologize! The lady was starting to feel ill at the party, so we thought getting some air would help. Unfortunately she was still feeling faint, so we decided it would be best if she turned in for the night...and we got turned around on the way."

Luckily, Niesal was quick to step forward and start talking, or who knows what Tahariel might have done? Nothing good, that much was certain...

She nearly squeaked out loud when every eye present turned towards her, and only remembering her status in the last second quelled it. She was an imperial princess, she wasn't supposed to squeak! Regardless of the uncharacteristic nervousness that ate at her, not helped in the least by the glare that the man holding the woman threw her way. Yeesh...

Her attention turned to the one that stepped forward and forward and spoke. "I see..." Minglian's attention traveled past the others to focus on the Vanystean princess. After what had happened earlier, perhaps her nerves were frayed with paranoia that harm might befall another member of the Vanystean royal family. The story given was plausible enough, but her eyes searched the woman's own face for any signs of distress beyond a fainting spell.

"If you all are lost, I can perhaps go look for a guard?" Wait, the mention of a guard brought Xiaodan, her own no doubt frantic protection, to mind. Did the princess not have guards who were meant to stay at her side and keep her safe with so many now roaming the palace? If they did not know her well enough to know where her rooms were, why were they allowed to wander about with royalty without a guard questioning or assisting them? The way the man held her, so protectively, made even less sense in that aspect too...

Something was wrong. And here she had just offered to alert a guard, her brother would kill her. Forcing her face to remain placid, the princess took a half-step back as if preparing to leave.

Huaxiu is very neat and very particular about things being where he wants them to be, especially in his house and especiallllllly in his kitchen. I'm talking, if Zhaohui or Meihui moves a vase a couple inches to the side (intentionally or unintentionally (probably intentionally)) he will notice and go fix it. If they keep moving it? He's catching on that they're messing with him and he's hissing at them. ...And then fixing it again.

He loves cleaning and cooking and he tends to hum a lot whenever he's doing either. They're just his happy place, you know?

A sort of shared and duo quirk but Minglian and Huaxiu share a lot of mannerisms! To no one's surprise, I'm sure, but it's wholly unconscious and neither of them have noticed it yet. Sit them right next to each other before a dish that they like and watch as they simultaneously make a happy noise, take a bite, and hum a little again.

Jianhuren thinks it's cute and specifically hasn't brought it up because they know it'll just fluster Minglian. Zhaohui has an ongoing drinking game with Meihui and Xiaodan that equals a shot during their next outing every time the two do something simultaneously like that.

Whenever the dragons have their next drink and gossip session, Huaxiu's always confused why the others start off with several shots as if they're in some sort of private competition.

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?

He has a pretty bad habit of messing with his hair when it’s down, around his face, or within hands reach of him. Things like pulling on it, rolling a strand between his fingers, anything along those lines. It is actually pretty distracting to him though when he gets to messing with it, so it’s part of the reason why he keeps it tied up or back. It’s also indicative of him focusing or trying to focus on something if he pushes it back and redoes the tie.

He also has a bad habit of getting into people’s personal space whenever he’s getting more interested in what they say, or if he’s overall getting pretty into the conversation. This one he’s also aware about and whether he reels it in depends entirely on how nice he plans on being in that moment.

For someone always wearing a smile, Zhaohui’s “true face” is actually pretty expressionless. Once someone digs past the layers of joking, then rage, they’ll reach…nothing. It’s like hitting the roots of one of those dead, petrified trees. It’s a worrying phenomenon for sure (for me at least), and something that he actually fully hasn’t caught onto yet.

Zhaohui has his never mentioned pearl! He doesn’t ever really have a need to use it, but it’s there. As something often associated with dragons in Chinese mythology, Zhaohui’s pearl is something that was essentially born alongside him. It’s linked to him and he has the ability to use it essentially as a scrying ball and see whatever thing or person that he wants with it. An exception exists where locations of people with especially strong magical protections— or, in Jianhuren’s case when they were missing, exceptionally funky curse stuff going on— are unable to be seen by him. However, the pearl is still capable of showing him “truths”, like how it revealed to him the true story behind Jianhuren’s disappearance. It’s something unique just to him as a fucanglong and he rarely brings it out from its…basically hammerspace. More on that in a second. It’s about palm-sized, black, and glimmers with the a golden undertone that’s the same shade as the gold in his hair and scales.

Going off from that, and this will also dip into Qingshan’s abilities a bit, is his ability to use enchantments. Enchantments are basicallllllly spells granted for use solely by the Red Eyes where expertise and mastery can only come with time and practice. It’s, how to explain it? Its limitations are only the dragon’s imagination and ability.

One example is a translation one used by the Red Eyes whenever they’re out and about. Of course, it was on the dragon themself to learn a language since it still took time to master enchantments enough. For example, Huaxiu learned a whole host of languages because he could utilize the translator effectively enough, and Minglian hasn’t really gotten it down yet, so she’s still manually learning languages and can only communicate in certain ones. Other example of use include creating constructs, like platforms or restraints, and basically having a hammerspace the Red Eyes generally use to store their weapon when not in use but in case they might need to be whipped out.

Zhaohui’s mastery is basically abysmal. He can use the translation enchantment, hammerspace, a baby bit of construct creation though it’s not as strong as it could be, and that’s about it. He essentially stopped practicing and using it much after his banishment.

Geez, this is already long enough but I forgot about the basic stuff for dragons! I'll...put it in Qingshan's section since it won't be as long as I covered a lot of other basic stuff in this one.

Qingshan has a tendency to fold and cross her arms in front of her! Cocking her head, she also of note makes facial expression very reminiscent to Huaxiu— or, more like, Huaxiu’s expressions harken back to her.

Give her something that’s in a pair of four and she’ll subtly do whatever to change the number. Four of one thing on a plate? She’s quietly either quickly eating one or destroying it with a utensil somehow. It’s more of a subconscious, ‘oh dear, four’, act than anything.

💙 BLUE HEART — does your oc have any cool/special powers and/or abilities? how are they with magic, if it exists in their world?

I already described the Red Eyes’ ability for enchantments at length! Haha, so let me just say Qingshan also didn’t practice as much because she was more interested in training with physical weapons, but she’s at least better than Zhaohui in terms of what she can do.

Going into dragon-specific stuff now! Dragons are hardy little lizards. Their scales are impervious can only be injured by enchanted metal-- metal enchanted by a specific process within their geographical area of supernaturals re: China. The gods also included this weakness in the Red Eyes so they didn't have servants that were too unstoppable, in case something went sideways one day. Anyways, enchanted metal can do a number on dragons and you can get creative with it! Get it in a liquid form? It'll mess up their insides. Powder? Probably won't be great if they breathe it in. So on.

Aside from that, dragons are generally all the usuals-- faster than humans, stronger, near instant healing ability. Some of the specific dragons have different abilities, like Meihui. Qingshan and the Red Eyes minus Zhaohui are Tianlongs-- Celestial dragons-- though.

She knew she should have been paying attention where she was walking! The young dragon had been so preoccupied with pulling up something on her phone to show her teacher that she hadn't heard the elder's warning nor realized that she was headed straight towards another until she had bumped into him with a small 'oof.'

Thankfully at least she held firm and hadn't gone sprawling or anything like that, but when Minglian looked up to apologize to the silver-haired man, she found her words had somehow gotten stuck in her throat. H-he was staring...right down at her!

Minglian froze like a deer in headlights.

"漂-漂亮..." Was the first thought in her head, and subsequently, out of her mouth. The dragon's entire body tensed the moment she realized that she had said that out loud and a rush of embarrassment strong enough to make her want to curl under the nearest rock smacked against her like a wave.

"O-or, I mean, I'm sorry! For running into you!"

....Did she just call him 'pretty?' Why was his student blushing like that with such an awe-struck look? What the hell?!
