Daniel Brought to Babylon

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.

3 Then the king said for Ashpenaz, the chief of his officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the royal seed and of the nobles, 4 youths in whom was no defect, who were good in appearance, showing insight in every branch of wisdom, being thoroughly knowledgeable and discerning knowledge, and who had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and he said for him to teach them the literature and tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed for them a daily ration from the king’s choice food and from the wine which he drank, and appointed that they should be educated three years, at the end of which they were to stand before the king. 6 Now among them from the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7 Then the commander of the officials set names for them; and for Daniel he set the name Belteshazzar, for Hananiah Shadrach, for Mishael Meshach, and for Azariah Abed-nego.

Daniel’s Heart

8 But Daniel set in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. 9 Now God granted Daniel lovingkindness and compassion before the commander of the officials, 10 and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.” 11 But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance be observed before you and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.”

14 So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that their appearance was better and that they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food. 16 So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.

17 And as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and insight in every branch of literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams.

18 Then at the end of the days which the king had spoken of for bringing them in, the commander of the officials brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; so they stood in service before the king. 20 And as for every matter of wisdom in understanding which the king sought from them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king. — Daniel 1 | Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) Legacy Standard Bible Copyright ©2021 by The Lockman Foundation. One of the best things about living right above The Human Bean was the easy access to coffee, tea and any other drink her heart desired. It was the perfect spot to quickly get in and out on her morning commute to work and Emiri couldn't deny it even on her days off. Sitting by the window earlier Emiri was sure she had heard her name, or at least a different pronunciation she was used to hearing. But as she slipped her phone in her pocket and went up to the area with the made drinks, she looked through the cups but didn't see her name written on any. Eyebrows furrowing she tried in vain to catch the attention of someone behind the counter, so she turned to look at a man standing next to her waiting for his own drink. "Did you hear them say Emiri? Or Emily? Or something like that? I swear I heard my name."

Despite mutual attempts to ensure otherwise, it is a physical impossibility for Lightning to spend every moment of every day with Farley Corcoran IV. So in the few moments of respite from their heated and newly renewed relationship, Lightning sits restlessly in his penthouse suite, having completely forgotten about what there is he could do on those days when his life does not revolve around his lover. It comes to him at some point that he does have friends, many of whom he has not seen or spoken to since the incident, except, of course, for one unlikely soul whose existence was still to him a point of utter confusion. Lightning really had tried his very best to drive this person away, because Lightning very much did not like being perceived at his most vulnerable, and yet this individual had stayed. He had watched over him without consideration or expectation of exchange, without ulterior motive (because Lightning had accused him of many, either because of genuine curiosity, or as a result of the utter boredom that came with having nothing to do and thusly they were attempts to pierce through the other’s meticulous facade of kindness and patience, which Lightning still doesn’t believe isn’t a facade, because how could someone like this exist and be friends with Lightning?). Lightning just doesn’t know what to do with Daniel Wylie, and yet he has spent the last few months with no one to talk to except Daniel Wylie, so it comes as almost instinct to call him and tell him that he was back in New York.

When Lightning calls Daniel, he doesn’t have a plan of any sort. He never really does. He just gives him the address of his new residence and tells the other to come over. He hangs up without explaining further, and spends the time waiting for him to come lying down on his bed and thinking again (forever and ever and ever and ever) about Farley, about what had happened during the time they were together, and only realizes that he hasn’t even sent Daniel a text in that entire time. When Daniel does arrive, he grins bright and wide because, well, Daniel is a friend and he is happy to see him, but also he is just happy now for reasons need not be mentioned again. He doesn’t know if Daniel has seen this happiness from him before, an electrifying, almost maniacal sort of happiness, a peak that can only be the parallel of something deeply and terribly low. “Daniel!” he greets joyfully, throwing his arms around the slightly younger man. “I would have made breakfast, but — yeah.“ Lightning raises his hands to show his fingers, incapable as they are. “I am fucking hungry, though. Do you want to go somewhere, have something delivered?”
