“Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it. And what could be more terrifying and beautiful, to souls like the Greeks or our own, than to lose control completely?”

girls don’t want boyfriends, girls want their fatal flaw, a morbid longing for the picturesque, to cause them to snap because “what could be more terrifying and beautiful to souls like the Greeks or our own, than to lose control completely?”

~"And if beauty is terror," said Julian, "then what is desire? We think we have many desires, but in fact we only have one. What is it?"
"To live," said Camilla.
"To live forever," said Bunny, chin cupped in palm.
The teakettle began to whistle.

beauty is terror - terror is no other than to succumb to the seduction of immortality; indulging in one’s most darkest desires, making suffering seem almost tempting. terror: to deny God, yet finding your knees to be scraped and bruised from relentlessly praying to avoid spiraling into madness. and such terror is, too, the forbidden, macabre dance between mortal hearts and the abyss: a heresy that leads to the inevitable martyrdom of a lamb into darkness.
— Inés Ortega, musings and various thoughts.

Henry Winter: If I, hypothetically, murdered a man, would you report me?
Bunny Corcoran: No but I'd use it against you all the time, like "are you gonna do the dishes or do I need to make a phone call?"

Thinking about trying to encapsulate the idea of "Beauty is terror" into my theology. God is Absolute Beauty (Plato). Thus, God is Absolute Terror (Donna Tartt).
And yet the terror is beautiful.
Thinking about Isaiah. Thinking about Isaiah seeing God's throne room, thinking he's gonna die, only for a fiery flying snake cherubim-esque creature to put burning coal on his lips. This should kill him but instead makes him holy - totally unique. Theosis like. (Moses horrifying transformation was (apo)theosis like) Then Isaiah is totally cleaned of his moral failure and is more than eager to risk his life for Yahweh.
Idk still meditating. Notes welcome.
