Hi, essay incoming! Before I begin, I want to specify that I am saying this as someone who likes Theil/their ships, also gets insecure about doubles and also feels like shit sometimes because of a lack of interaction. I really do wanna try to help so this is VERY long but if anything that proves I care about you and your ships. Sorry if it's boring to read though

"Why don't people care/ask about Theil?"

1. The real answer is they do. You do get asks. 95% of blogs only get asks about their ships/ocs via ask memes. You actually get other asks. And you've said that even if you'd like more rp partners, you actually have a rp friend that cares about them. People just don't ask *as* much as you want them to. And to be honest I think your standards/expectations are not only unhealthy but also quite unrealistic.

I know everyone wants validation on your ships and "hur dur you should do it for yourself" is true but we all feel happier when someone cares. But you are usually comparing yourself to the top most popular accounts period. Should the average person that likes to play sports compare themselves to someone they see on TV all the time? Probably not. Is a local theater actor bad and worthless just because their theater isn't making millions like Hollywood productions?

While your posts don't have that many notes, people are more interested in your stuff than you think. My posts about my f/os/random thoughts usually get 3-7 likes (yes it fluctuates that much) but people have almost NEVER come into my askbox to ask about my ships unless it's to practice karma for a meme. It has happened twice in like...the 5+ years I have been in the community.

You also say you don't get letters but I do see one in your blog every once in a while. I haven't gotten one in literally two years.

I don't want this to sound guilt trippy or like I'm going "Hur dur you're not allowed to feel bad or upset because others have it worse!!!", I genuinely don't mind because I try not to rely on Tumblr for my ships (see some later points) but I'm just saying people care more about Theil than you think

2. "But what about the other 5%? Why do they get to have and I don't? I want to have it"

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. The top 5% that gets tons of interactions and asks? More than half of those asks are their friends or people they talk to/interact with a lot. People who get constant f/o letters? I can assure you 9 out of 10 times a friend sent it.

People will just care more about the ships of someone they consider a friend or someone who they feel like is interested in their ships too. How much do you care about most ships on the dash vs your rp partner's ones? It's give and receive. Either that, or they pump out tons of art (which isn't something most people can do). Because as sad as this may sound, art is more "instant" to consume than writing or lore dumping (not saying art can't be analyzed or deep or that's its just pretty images but you get what I'm saying) and gets people interested faster

Let's be honest, 90% of selfship fics get 1-4 notes (and none of them are rbs with tags gushing or commenting). Blogs who get more than 5 snd/or actually have people gushing in the notes are people who have tons of friends on a huge taglist. Again. 90% of fics get zero traction. Doesb't mesn you shouldn't write them or send them to your friends. But it's unhealthy to expect tons of notes on them

I'm gonna answer this asks individualy and kinda just. Break down my replies bc it's just easier

Last night wasn't about asks, I was pretty happy there, it was about interactions with that "post your ship and whoever likes/reblog supports your ship. People were getting 20-100+ notes and if u take off my rbs on mine I didn't even have 10. I was seeing people who ship w the same character get rbs from mutuals that didn't even like my post. And the rp I'm talking Abt w that is self ship. I do love my rp but my frustration comes from not having someone who wants to rp my fos.

MOST of the instances of that meme had at least 20 notes, and only like 2 that I saw had single digit notes. And especially w other shippers of my f/os getting more notes than me made me feel like ppl don't . And yeah in other cases I tend to focus on the most popular people which is why I'm trying to to limit my interaction w nonmutuals that get a lot of engagement, but in this case the average seemed to be 15-20 notes.

It's hard to feel like people are paying attention sometimes honestly. And I get that I get more engagement than a lot of ppl but there's still this "I'm basically just yelling into the void, the stuff I'm saying is only interesting to me/contradicts canon and I don't realize/sucks in some other way" feeling u know? I often don't get letters when I'm asking for them for comfort. Yeah there are time I do but there are more times I don't and then I'm stuck w my emotions which is. Not fun. Again I'm not saying I don't get more than others but it sucks needing someone me support and not getting it y'know.

I do try to make friends here but I struggle w it a lot 😭 I'm not good at keeping in touch, especially lately bc I've been Going Through It and not rlly able to have a good one on one convo w anyone but a select handful of ppl. Hopefully that changes soon but Hell World. I do try to support my friends ships tho. I rb'd all of the meme for people I follow that I saw, and if I did find someone who wanted to do self ship rp I'd very gladly double.

I'm not even wanting tons of notes on my writing. I just want to know that people are like. Paying attention. That I'm not just yelling into the void. Because if that's the case, I can just like. Put my HCs in a Google doc or something.

SO i have two main ocs, floryn and rory (both she/her) they’re both queer and to keep it veryyyy short: floryn is very creative, extroverted and wild and rory is very athletic/physically strong, introverted and cool & collected (the one with a braincell out of the duo) ofc they’re a lot more complex than that but i don’t wanna keep this too long kabdjsksal

at the start of the story theyre friends and they start crushing on eachother, it’s not really slowburn i think but it’s not very quickly either

i also wanna make more friends for them but i haven’t done that yet aljskajs

the only other character i have is a boy and he’s an asshole. basically he has a crush on floryn and somehow finds out that rory has a crush on her too, that makes him upset because he was just about to go on a date with flo and he kinda sees rory as a threat bc he knows they’re close friends (and maybe he also has a past bullying rory so he knows it would ruin his chances with floryn if she found out abt him being mean to rory). so he locks rory into a locker (but don’t worry - the person who the locker belongs to gets her out pretty quickly and they become besties) to prevent her from talking to flo. then he goes on what he thought was a date with floryn and she tells him she just likes him as friend. a bit later floryn finds out that he was an asshole to rory and slaps him in the face <3 and then he’s upset and does a dramatic reveal that rory has a crush on floryn, expecting her to be disgusted bc it turns out he’s homophobic as well, but plot twist: floryn is actually very openly and confidently lesbian/bi (haven’t decided yet) and is super excited because she has a crush on rory too. then she slaps him in the face again for being homophobic <3 and rory and floryn go on a date or something cute and end up in a relationship :DD it might be kinda boring and weird and basic and i don’t even know but i just want some simple drama that ends up with a wlw romance <33 and that’s only a very basic outline anyways, there’s probably a lot that’ll happen before and afterwards :D

and to get bonus points, my main inspirations are 1. heartstopper (that made me realise how much i crave a cute wlw story, i know there are a lot but i just wanted to make my own i guess) 2. (the most recent one that lead me to actually come up with this) jackson’s diary, it’s also a webcomic and there’s always a lot going on and it’s dramatic but not too dramatic and idk i’ve just been feeling very inspired by it, also in terms of art so MAYBE i’m gonna make a comic out of this but probably not because that requires sooo much work akshkajs. anyways, inspo numero 3. sleeping beauty, kinda but not really? at the start i wanted it to be an entirely different story as a wlw modern retelling of sleeping beauty but then i began adding a lot of own twists and it got so chaotic i’m kinda scrapping it for now and came up with something completely different (one thing that remains though is that rorys full name is actually aurora :0 but everyone calls her rory so it doesn’t matter that much, but still a little easter egg for myself <3)

and now my headcanon questions: 1. you've probs talked about this before but in ur long term post-canon (like. snapshot of these guys as Real Adults 10+ years later ) what are vaya and vamos' average days like? 2. do u have any platonic vamos & vinyl headcanons?, and 3. do u have any val/volume/vinyl relationship headcanons? sorry those last two are so open ended I'm just thinking about them ❤️

oh!!!! okay okay okay i love these (and god. i talk so much whoops)

1. vaya ten years down the road still lives in the RadioShack (docs old station) but kind of splits nights between there and xyr girlfriend's place (blessed helen, milf, oc that @dangerdaysofficial and i share). if xes at the shack xe gets woken up by xyr cat(s) and if xes at helens they get woken up by helens kids. xe does broadcasts from the shack mostly but if theres an event happening in the zones (concert, sports game, derby, etc) then xe has a portable station in docs van and goes to them. so yeah xe mostly hangs out, does broadcasts/traffic reports when they happen (much rarer now that like. they arent at war sdkfjs), bugs val and vinyl, xe 'helps' helen in her garden by sitting around and looking pretty and spraying her with a hose when she isnt looking. vayas life postcanon is very much learning how to put down roots and be open and connected with the world around xem

vamos ten years down the road is living in the city, has like. two or three therapy appts a year bc theyve done the Real heavy lifting with like trauma/grief/codependency so now they only have to go when their SAD is acting up or like, yknow, life stresses make things tough. they i think run a like, free store yknow? and it also functions a bit as the nest did in terms of being open housing, a place for people to hang out, vamos loves people and loves helping people so living somewhere thats like, the-nest-but-not-so-destructive is really really good for them. and its very chill as well they get to sleep in and run around the city for fun and host big like. community dinners whenever they want to and ofc they go out of the zones at least once a week to visit vaya and val and vinyl. sometimes the rest of the v's (they still call themselves that but its more of an honorary thing yknow?) come in to visit but vaya is Busy still and going to the city is still kinda hard on vinyl so thats less often. which is ok! vamos does love the zones still they just went to the city to get like. therapy very soon after them n val and vinyl got back from their postcomics roadtrip and by the time theywere like. feeling stable enough to not need super frequent appts and checkups they had roots down in the city and didnt Want to leave. vamos' life postcanon is less about putting down roots and more about finding the balance between independence and community that was hard for them to get while being like. hunted for being a killjoy

2. i have a few but theyre not serious theyre just like. i like rotating them in my mind. vinyl is the only v that Actually knows how to change a lightbulb but vamos is the one that always does it bc vinyl likes to sit back and laugh while vamos climbs up on whoevers shoulders to try and fix things. vamos had been dying their hair before joining the vs ofc but vinyl was the one to suggest that they try pink. they cuddle so much!!! like vamos is already a v physically affectionate person but vinyl LOVES to curl up with them, theyll nap together on couches a lot. also as the two v's that val was most uh. lenient (? chill) with, theyll team up to tease him every now and then (moreso postcanon for obvious reasons) which sometimes looks like vamos putting on what they imagine vinyl's voice would sound like to read whatever he's written in his notebook and sometimes looks like the two of them passing notes and giggling like schoolchildren, tossing the book back and forth over vals head when he tries to grab it, etc. bastards <3 it was vinyls idea for vamos to come on the postcomics roadtrip

3. hm. not romantic hcs but friendship ones for sure!! they were the v's before vaya and vamos joined so there was i think abt two years when it was just the three of them running around, eventually moving into and kinda taking over the nest. volume and val could fight a lot and sometimes vinyl would smack a little sense into them and sometimes hed leave them to work it out but like. most of the time they Did all get along super well (crews love each other!!!) and i mean. sharing beds sharing clothes (val n volume are the same size for binders) making each other food "hey volume i stole u jewelry from the market" "oh val did you hear about the loretta show in zone three i think youd have fun, we should go" "vinyl im doing laundry do you want me to patch up your jumpsuit i know the knees are wearing through" like!!! even if they were bad at um. words and obvious shows of affection or acting like they liked each other sometimes they loved and knew each other really really well and it was obvious in the little things

We generally have the plays split up along lines of “what we know”— we have a list at the very beginning of the blog. Sometimes we’ll draw the others’ characters (mostly me drawing some of Star’s…) but even then the final say on characterization is up to the “main” mod for that play — mod aster

I think my favorite play overall is Macbeth, just because I like the vibes (and the fact that I too could kill Macbeth), the fact that you don’t say it’s name in theatres, and the fact that it’s a play I did a full read through and analysis of in class. uhhhh,, hmm. ive always had a soft spot for midsummer since i saw it with aster esp bc of how fun the costumes were. of the comedies it has the largest potential to be the most visually pleasing bc of the concept of fairies,,,and im gay and dramatic so i love that. id die if i got to costume design for midsummer,,,or be in it,,,yeah. fav character. hmm. probably mercutio?? i recently saw a version of romeo and juliet where mercutio was played by a woman and oh my god it was amazing!!! not to mention mercutio’s portrayal in baz luhrmann's INCREDIBLE version of r n j!!! This is phrased like an ACT question and i might not answer it right so sorry in advance but: mod aster and i only selected a few plays for each of us to do given we dont know all of shakespeare’s works, but we tend to put more emphasis on the the more well known. But it also comes down to 1. How much we have plotted out for each play and 2. What the followers ask about most. Our two most popular are hamlet and macbeth bc people are familiar w those but around march caesar always becomes relevant again. I didnt even have designs for some of the characters until someone asked about them. -- mod star

I would say the same as star— it generally comes down to what people ask about. I will say that the overall plot is sort of separated into “has happened” and “is happening”. Like, the human potion of Midsummer, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth are all in the “aftermath” portion, while Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet, among others, are happening. We’re trying to incorporate as much as we can, and I don’t think any of them were really put in without some thought.— mod aster

I go to a theater school rn and so ive dealt w shakespeare (although not all of them) it also helps that i was in loves labours lost last year as moth and that i read hamlet and r n j. Theres also a theater in my state that always does One Big Shakespeare per season and they always do them super well!!! My love for shakespeare probably started w seeing midsummer at that theater w mod aster!!! So. Theater kid rights!! -- mod star

To be honest, I got back into Shakespeare Because of the blog. I’ve been friends with some people that got really Pretentious about Shakespeare, and it kinda put me off of it. I did have a book of abridged plays (the plays’ plots written out in prose, basically) that I read as a kid, which is what got me into not only the plots of a lot of the plays, but also the idea of having them illustrated. And, same as star, the theater in state does the One Big Shakespeare— and they tend to do some really cool things with the costumes, setting them in diff time periods. Uhh i started drawing when i was like idk 12 and i have the giant boxes of sketchbooks to prove it!!! I moved to digital art at abt 14-15 but mostly stayed traditional until this yr when i got a Neat New Tablet so some of my sketchbooks are sitting abandoned rip. Oh man. I started drawing when I was about 10, but it was Bad. I don’t think I got much into drawing again until I was about 14? Sometime around the end of middle school/beginning of high school. I would say I started getting into drawing as more than doodling/coloring edits sometime around 2015-16? I would draw on my iPad with my finger, then I got a tablet for my computer, and now I pretty much stick to my iPad with an Apple Pencil. My first Shakespeare play was….. uh…… probably Midsummer???? Met mod aster when i was like 4 and even tho we didnt live close we became like, best friends although the Best part didnt start until we were like 13-ish and eventually we talked like non stop (about anime and homestuck. Yknow. 13 year old kid things) and we didnt see each other a lot bc of Distance and now its even worse bc aster is in colleg.,e but we consider each other siblings regardless of family bc we’re adopted into our own respective families so that bled over into our friendship and it would feel weird calling him anything other than my brother now. It can depend on the piece? I was working on some (unrelated) oc prints that were song-focused, and for those I just listened to said song on loop. Sometimes I have playlists. Sometimes I’ll just be in a Mood and throw a song on loop. But a lot of time for the blog, I’ll listen to The Adventure Zone for the billionth time, because I have Too Much Attention. I’ve also, on request from Star, linked the most recent “loop song”.— mod aster

I tend to obsess over the same like 3 songs every few weeks so those get listened to on repeat but it also depends on the tone of what im drawing or who im drawing i might genre switch bc of that. If im drawing ophelia i stick to lana del rey and if im drawing hamlet its the neighborhood, horatio is sufjan stevens etc. i have categorized,. Most of the characters i draw into different songs/genres/energies of music but not like i ever follow that. Sometimes i just pull up a really long nonsense video and forget to draw. How did you end up deciding the rough timeline of events in canon? (@pedanticlecturer)

It’s mostly determined by like. How we choose per story? If that makes sense. Like, we just take story by story, and decide “is it happening, has it happened, and when?” And then we fit them together in relation to each other just by dint of. All existing at once. Like, I knew I wanted Macbeth to be in aftermath, because like, even though there’s no murder, the way I’ve translated it to the AU is still kinda heavy, and it’s something that I don’t know that I could do properly if it were happening right now. Also, it’s more interesting IMO to have them at different times. Tl;dr we wing it per story and slot them together— mod aster (mod star agrees I just can word better, in theory)

If you could tell the story of shakespeare high in a different format than an ask blog, would you? Obviously y'all are making very good use of the format, but would you want to write this as a animated series or like? a comic book? or is the form inseparable from the story? (@pedanticlecturer)

I kinda wanted to do a webcomic or maybe to plot develop through like, animatics but the element of surprise comes from the asks we get and really makes us think so the blog is a good start. We didnt think we’d get this far -- mod star

Pretty much what Star said— there are certain elements where it’d be neat to do as a comic or as an animatic. Like, the fantasy dream is like, an anthology webcomic of each story, where you can like, see other characters in the background and stuff. But to be honest, we develop a lot by what we’re asked— there was a post about developing worldbuilding by being asked questions and then pretending you’ve thought about the answer, and it’s not far off. Personally, it’s hard to just lay out a story, because I have a whole WORLD and what’s relevant? What are people interested in? It’s by getting questions that I can then focus in on an area to develop. And yeah, we Super didn’t think we’d get this far lmao — mod aster

so, there’s 3 kingdoms, all w/different morals & ideas:

The Kingdom of Preocupat: their whole moral system is “as long as you don’t damage property you can go wild.” unsurprisingly, they have a lot of crime here-

The Kingdom of Cordeno: upholds kindness & respect, try their hardest to remain “pure” in the eyes of their deities (who im still working on-)

The Kingdom of Tenbrarum: ok yeah, this kingdom is barely a kingdom- the people call for anarchy & the royalty try to get them to stop

 these kingdoms are all in a conflict: Cordeno wants everyone to just chill & not have any death, Tenbrarum is trying to basically kill off all of their citizens in hopes of starting anew & Preocupat is helping both sides out, not really caring about their placement in it all.

 so its chaos in this realm- but there are groups from each kingdom gathering, trying to help the conflict to the best of their abilities.

 the ocs i posted about? they might be a group, but they definitely aren’t trying to help the conflict anytime soon- they might have incredibly powerful people in the group (which i’ll talk about soon!) but they would rather help out random travelers & small taverns in the woods than help the kingdoms

 w/all that story stuff out the way, lemme talk about the gang! (also, they all either have ADHD or are autistic, this is mostly bc I self projected onto all of them so- im mentioning this bc im gonna talk about their favorite stims)

she’s dating Moonweb

a funky lil musician who travels around the realm, uncaring of consequences

she didn’t have a family, so she’s traveled around for as long as she can remember

she often makes pit stops at taverns to perform, & her music enchants anyone who listens to it

basically, when she sings, she has the power to control the elements & keep people/enemies drawn to her

she doesn’t really have that much control over these powers, (she has accidentally set a tavern on fire once) the most she knows now is when to stop singing

despite her not caring about consequences, she is rather wary of how her actions affect others, bc she’s seen the best & worst of people & she’d hate to be someone that caused hurt

she smells like cinnamon!

 Moonweb (she/he/they):

she’s dating Aeolanyira

a half elf, half demon who lives among the mortals to help do jobs for his father

although they never knew her mother, his father is actually very caring (for a demon lord) & usually sends them around so he can teach her various lessons

they actually met Aeolanyira in a tavern & decided to follow her around to see what she does on her journeys

he actually doesn’t have many powers apart from being able to fly & having heightened senses-

she prefers flying around, but ever since they’ve joined the gang he tries to walk more often so she can hold Aeolanyira’s hand 🥺

they tend to present themself as very kind, but if she doesn’t care about you then you’ll end up being a pawn in his game-

his scarf is the only remnant they have of her mother

fav. stims: flapping their wings around despite not flying & smelling cinnamon bc it’s a nice smell & reminds her of Aeolanyira

he’s dating Orsal

 

Whiskey (he/him):

an orc from the kingdom of Cordeno who follows the messages of his Goddess

he has a ton of siblings. his parents taught them all the messages of their Goddess. he ended up leaving bc the family started putting too much pressure on his shoulders

while travelling around, he ran into Aeolanyira & Moonweb, who were stuck in a ditch somehow?? he helped them & decided to stick around bc they looked like they could use some help

he doesn’t have powers on his own, however he’s pretty damn good w/a sword & can ask his Goddess for help

when asking his Goddess for help, he has the power to just slash the crap out of everyone (this technically goes against his morals, but he’ll do anything to help his friends)

due to his upbringing, he tries to keep kindness & peace first, but the gang definitely can make that hard-

his armor piece was a gift from 1 of his favorite sisters

fav. stims: tapping his foot & clinking his sword against stuff bc he likes the noises :D

he’s dating Whiskey

Orsal (he/him):

a powerful demon lord who was sent up to the mortals’ realm to basically babysit his friend’s child (Moonweb-)

he doesn’t have family, he was born out of the mortals’ rage

he honestly was just stumbling around the realm until he bumped into Moonweb, who was hanging out w/Aeolanyira & Whiskey in a tree-

he basically just gets his powers from people’s rage. someone’s intensely upset? Orsal gains power from that, using it whenever he can

when using people’s rage, he grows bigger & stronger. he can grow up to 15 feet & tends to stay at this size after battles

he has very similar morals to Moonweb: he uses people to his own benefit, but he doesn’t try to hide it like Moonweb. he’s very soft & protective of those he cares about tho (the gang 🥺🥺)

his eyes change color! when using his powers, his eyes go black & red, but outside of that his eyes are blue & green

fav. stims: destroying things & touching the others (not in a weird way- it’s more like him playing w/or stroking the other’s hair & wings)

currently single, but she has a secret admirer 👀

Zanna (she/her):

a powerful witch who lives in a cottage just outside the outskirts of Tenbrarum

her family’s dead- she’s alive bc she cast a successful spell that keeps her alive longer

the rest of the gang met her when they were on the run from Tenbrarum forces- she kinda just opened her door for them & was so amused by them that she joined their little journey

she’s a jack of all trades who’s basically learned all types of magic- she does grow tired when she does too much magic of any kind, so she doesn’t pop off as much as she could  

she specializes in healing & defensive magic, but she’s definitely very good at offensive magic

she’s been alive for so long that she’s basically grown desensitized to everything. she’s seen it all & she’s not gonna try to change anything anytime soon. the only things she cares about is the gang, so F in the chat for anyone who messes w/them-

bc her sleeves are really long, her hands rarely show. it’s become a joke w/in the gang that if her hands show, she means business

fav. stims: fidgeting w/her sleeves & doing flashy magic to watch the colors change :D

currently single, but crypt’s pining hard for Zanna 👀👀

Enador (crypt/cryptself):

a vampire who became the “familiar” of Zanna & is her personal bodyguard (tho not really since we all know Zanna can handle herself)

crypt’s family disowned crypt bc crypt showed way too much interest in other species- 

crypt hid crypt’s human form from the gang for a while- 1 night crypt just chose to shift & the gang was like “ZANNA YOUR BAT’S TURNED INTO A HUMAN” & Zanna was like “lmao i know”

crypt is honestly just a normal vampire- besides being able to stand in the sun & having crypt’s animal features pop up, not much is different

the most impressive thing about crypt is crypt can just transform in the blink of an eye- crypt just spreads crypt’s wings out & suddenly there’s a bat there

crypt’s been alive just as long as Zanna, however the 2 have very different morals- crypt just has SO much pent up rage, so crypt’s morals are basically “if you inconvenience me or my friends even just a little bit, i will choose violence & not hold back”

crypt has claws- i can’t tell you how many times crypt has accidentally scratched someone in the gang & had to apologize immensely

fav. stims: rocking back & forth & lightly chewing on crypt’s skin (Zanna didn’t know about it until later & that’s when she gave crypt a bunch of random things to chew on in the meantime)
