a large hand lands on your head gently. looking up, you spot your megumi with a stoic expression. per usual.

“what’s your wallpaper?” freezing at the question, you slowly turn to where he was sitting. 

“why…” avoiding eye contact, you quickly search where your phone is only to spot that your dear boyfriend has it. 

“it’s pretty,” he turns the phone towards you, showing you your chosen photo. smiling -and letting out a breath of relief- you lean in to give him a peck on his cheek. he flushes at the sudden affection. 

“is it live?” he asks and before you can stop him, he’s already holding down on the screen. 

a sequence of short clips of megumi neatly edited together was now playing on your phone screen. 

nothing could’ve prepared anybody for this. 

stomach doing flips, you slowly push away from him and grab a pillow; hugging it close to your chest. 

what surprised you even more was the outcome of the situation. there you were, ready to hear whatever megumi’s freaked out response was. 

“cute.” he snickers. 

if your gut was doing flips before, you don’t even know what it was doing now. tightening your grip on the pillow as if it could leave your grasp at any second. 

“what..” you murmur looking at him through your lashes, shrinking into the pillow. 

“I said it was cute, idiot,” lifting a finger and lightly flicking your forehead. 

grumbling, you rub your forehead roughly attempting to soothe the pain whilst trying not to appear flustered.

hi dear! let's see... is that even a question? 🤧 ofc ofc i do hehe

megumi, being the observant type he is would notice how you'll often order a specific item off a menu, no matter where you are! when that particular item isn't anywhere to be found, if he can, he would try to recreate your favorite. or, search an entire city just to get what you want 😭 of course you tell him he doesn't have to, but he will insist, until he begrudgingly lets it go

i think he plays guitar a little *swoons* he isn't amazing, and he's a little slow when switching chords but damn– just damn. his main instrument that he would play, i think, would be a piano!

he has puppy eyes 🥺 only you can pull from him and he uses it only on you. and damn him, it works every time he pulls it when he wants something

IM SO HAPPY SOMEONE NOTICED HAHSHS,,, when i put that in my navi i didn't think anyone would see it but here u are >:D also. you and i are sharing the same brain cause i was brainrotting the EXACT SAME THING !!!!!

just. thinking about being childhood friends with megumi, growing up together at such a young age—even as you become a knight while he becomes a royal. in your teens, you are always sparring to train each other's swordsmanship (per his parent's request), although you usually come out winning with your knight training, mixed with some of your own skills.

as time goes by, however, he gets better—picking up on your tricks, moving faster (he has grown tall, taller than you), fighting with flexibility. you also start to stay by his side voluntarily during all of his lessons, meals, and his free time: he is the kingdom's heir, after all, and he needs the best knight in the army to protect him.

as you grow up, your swordsmanship gets extremely better too: you go through more promotions than you can count on your fingers, and at some point, megumi even teases you for it (much to your dismay, since he has always liked to pinch your cheeks as kids). your skills make up of five of king toji's soldiers, and maybe even ten on a really good day! megumi knows that too: because on his eighteenth birthday, he officially assigns you to be his personal knight and guard.

megumi has grown a lot since you two were just kids: yes, he works much harder on mandatory qualities that a king needs to have, but he looks grown too. he's taller (again), stronger, more knowledgeable, and, well, prettier. you start to gaze at him a bit more whenever you guys finish practicing—a towel wrapped around his neck, as sweat drips down his hair and trails onto his jaw. he teases you more, compares his strength with yours, and gets really smug too. whenever you scold him for skipping a meal or not sleeping enough, megumi either tickles you without mercy or holds your helmet high above your head, making you pout the frown he finds so endearing.

speaking of not sleeping enough—you always refuse to sleep until he does everyday. both of your stubbornness never mixes well, as it usually results in the both of you sleeping on the floor of his room, or him sitting beside your bed and lecturing you like a mother would until you fall asleep.

and then, it comes, like a wrecking ball into your life: arranged marriage. the king and queen are looking for someone for megumi, and just thinking about it makes you feel weird.

you don't know why it does, because you want your best friend to be king and to be happy. of course you do! you would do anything for megumi: even if it cost you your limbs, your emotions, and even your life.

"i hate this," megumi suddenly speaks, and you raise your eyebrows from laying down beside him. the two of you are in the castle's field and sitting on his blanket, his back filling your view. (you can't help but note that his shoulders have gotten much more broad.)

"what?" you chuckle, hands tucked comfortably behind your head. "me? it's about time you have gotten sick of me."

he rolls his eyes and turns around to give you a flick right on the forehead. you immediately prop yourself up at that, grabbing his wrists in your much smaller hands, which he instantaneously wrestles from you and traps your hands in his. "you know that's not what i meant."

you frown at his victory. "then what?"

megumi sighs, still holding onto you as you try to slip out of his grip. "the... everything. the marriage. my parents." highness. "i don't want to marry a stranger."

oh. your heart pangs at his words, and you force a smile. it hurts to realize that there is no space in the world for a knight and a prince to be together—that's why it took you so long to realize your feelings in the first place. but instead, like a fool, you just encourage him. "find someone from another kingdom you really like then. surely there is someone out there for you, mr. know-it-all prince."

he snorts at your last words, finally letting go of you before turning back around. he stares at the sun starting to set in front of you two, the view reflecting back onto his features beautifully. it's difficult not to admire megumi; he looks so magical to you. he could roll around in dirt for hours and you would still be infatuated. push those feelings down, idiot.

"that's not it," he slowly says, after a few moments of silence pass by. then, your eyes widen as the tips of his ears redden, a rare sight that you don't get to see often. "i... already have somone i like. father just forbids me to propose to them."

your heart sinks into the absolute bottom of your stomach. you bite your bottom lip as your mind starts to race, because you know that he isn't well acquainted with anyone outside of respect or professionally. has he been seeing someone secretly this whole time? and he didn't tell you, his best (and only) friend?

and then you do the unthinkable. something oh-so incredibly stupid, because you like megumi too much for your own good.

"who?"

can he tell? that your heart is skipping beats in a way that isn't positive at all, and your awaiting gaze isn't one of happiness for him. you want to know who the lucky person is—to know who beat you in the game of love, with the one that was in your eyes all of your life.

it's silent again, and he's thinking thoroughly about his next words. you can tell by the look on his face, and oh god, he's blushing again, and as pretty and cute as the sight is, you internally frown at the thought that he isn't blushing because of you. he's averting his gaze nervously (weird, because you two are the only only ones outside) and playing with the collar of his shirt, thumbing the buttons and exhaling in slow breaths.

"they have been with me all my life." megumi turns to you with a hopeful look, and you raise a brow in confusion. he has stopped fidgeting and is now looking at you like you're the only thing that exists, making you stiffen up and the back of your neck heat up at his gaze.

"uh...the gardener?"

his expression of passion completely disappears as he deadpans at you. "they make my bed when i don't, take care of me whenever i'm sick, and cook me my favorite meals. how about that?"

you're so utterly confused and dumbfounded. "the maid...? oh wait, the butler?"

he wastes no time standing up, dusting off his clothes as he frowns while glaring at you, cheeks red with an embarrassed look in his eyes. "you're so clueless and dumb."

"wha— h-hey!" you scramble to get up from the grass as he quickly walks away, chasing after him. "what did i do? wait, where are you going?"

you are going to be the death of him, he thinks with defeat, heading back towards the castle with you trailing like a lost puppy behind him. you're so oblivious and stubborn it kills him, because is it that hard to tell that he likes you so much?

but he guesses that that's what he likes about you too.

on the outside he looks very composed, a small smile on his features but, on the inside? he's dying about the size difference, and finds it so fucking adorable. mentally he's pulling his hair out and screaming, but he does really well in hiding it

he also likes playing with your fingers 🤧 megumi would just grab your hands and absent-mindedly plays with your fingers, like using his pointer finger to poke your pointer finger (megumi - 👉👈 -you). yes, very cute megumi, i will smooch you
