Semi-live/retrospective analysis of The Well!

Another semi-liveblog / semi analysis of episode 3! Again, I watched and wrote this early using the iPlayer release, but am posting when the BBC 1 airing ends. I'm scheduling it, so hopefully the football doesn't go long and knock it off-time.

As a warning, while comments are generally made in chronological order with the episode, note that I do come back and make edits in some cases based on later information, which may include spoilers. So maybe don't follow along with these comments while watching the episode for the first time (not that I expect anyone is doing that, but just in case)!

I love we're picking up right off from Lux with these costumes in the TARDIS. We could have had the Doctor and Belinda change first, but this sets us right up after the TARDIS left. Not that unusual for the first few episodes of a series, but I do like it when it happens.

"swatted by a giant moth" Kill the Moon thoughts intensify...

"and your mum will whistle at my behind" Interesting again to see how Fifteen is particularly aware of the power of attraction and how to manipulate it. I would say it feels a little iffy doing that with the first black Doctor (though I'm not black, so I don't want to get too carried away speaking about racial implications myself), but we have seen plenty of bits like this sexualising the Doctor with previous incarnations. See 9 and 10's relative flirtiness, 11 too, although while seemingly being less aware of it, with his relative asexuality (though I'd argue he still enjoys the game of it all, given his relationship with River etc., even if he's sometimes a bit less aware of when he's led someone on - Amy, Nefertiti, Marilyn etc.)

The return of Toxic! 20 years later!

A little silly the TARDIS had exactly the same (military?) uniforms. Couldn't we have had the orange spacesuits or something?

The crew not reacting to the Doctor and Bel straight away is a little weird, but I assume we're just at a point with the jump where there's no return and they need to pay attention.

My astrophysics nerd heart loves the spacescapes we're getting this era.

(Future comment: wait, does this mean Midnight is actually a Moon, based on the proximity of that ringed planet? Or at least a binary system? I really need to go back to that episode and see how things match up.)

Carbon 46 - I assume not "Carbon-46" right? That would be impossible. The number must have a different meaning than isotope - maybe the atomic configuration? (Future edit: YUP!)

A lot of specific numbers this series. Some of them stood out previously (e.g. that six-six-six-sixteen) but I'm not sure any mean anything. An interesting point to note though, given the later discussion of 13 being unlucky as an Earth superstition. Could be hinting at future significances.

"Hope is irrelevant." Interesting. We just had the Doctor discussing the idea of the TARDIS bringing hope last episode (very DotD, since I didn't say it before), so this may be starting to form a theme. Was there any discussion of hope in The Robot Revolution?

"It's not appropriate to call me 'babes'." This is obviously meant to be antagonistic, but honestly... hell yeah, speak back to your "higher-up".

Hmm... more emphasis on heart beats, here as a life sign. But not the Doctor's this time. I'm still adding it to the list though.

Yay, another deaf character!

Interesting choice to have part of the signed conversation untranslated. Was there any significance there? Also is this recognisable BSL/ASL? I think I recognised a bit, with the thank you, but don't know about the rest.

Nice also to have the Doctor be more confident at it, after some of Twelve's mistakes last time.

So everyone else went mad? I assume it was caused by something sound related then? But then why the mirrors?

"A nurse who can't sign? That's against the law." "Well, we have different laws. But you're right, it should be the law."

In retrospect, I like the detail that Aliss didn't react to the door opening! She was facing the other way, and of course she didn't hear it. I was wondering at first why she was so nonchalant to it opening.

Mercury... so another source of reflections?

"I can still lip-read."

Between Bel's struggling as a nurse and the Doctor's questions, I'm kinda struggling to buy that the crew will keep buying their authority. This is a common DW trope, so I'm not sure why I'm so sceptical this episode... (Future Edit: Given who the enemy is this episode, no wonder the writing has got me feeling so anxious about this! Genuinely quite a compliment to Angel Walfall, RTD, and the show crew on making me feel this way without even knowing why!)

The well itself gives strong "Satan Pit" vibes. Maybe this is why we didn't bring back the orange, as it would have felt too similar?

I like some of the world-building we're getting this episode, with regards to the 'wildlands' and entering the force as a teenager. Far more than we usually get for "generic interstellar space mission".

OH? So something has happened to Earth. Presumably not erased from time given last episode, but perhaps its future history has been, depending on what's happening in the present. I can't remember if I said this before, but this all feels surprisingly Lawrence Miles "Book of the World" so far (or just the stolen planets arc I guess), not that I'm saying it's more EU (or in this case, unofficial writing) cribbing, just a similar vibe with the mystery of Earth somehow being missing.

Interesting to have two explicitly human-like alien species this series already. Not as common in New Who compared to Classic. Feels a little bit of a shame we're not getting some prosthetics or something though, given that Disney+ money, to give a least a little bit of an alien appearance. That's always been why I've quite liked aliens like the Singers of Akhet, or the Drahvin (BTW RTD, can we can get the Drahvin back, pretty please?).

That jump scare took a couple repeats to see what happened. Something was behind Aliss. Is she possessed, or carrying something with her? Maybe something to do with that wound?

"What's that thing?" "Magic" lol (Another point for the Magic vs Science unravelling laws of rationality theme in this show, plus how the Doctor fits into it all)

Maybe I'm so sceptical of the authority thing because of this guy's (reasonable) doubts.

Feels quite Series 4. 'There's something on your back'

"But it's just a grey star now. Nothing special." "Well, a grey star is a star that's collapsed." Hm, a grey star isn't a thing. Is it meant to be a fading white dwarf (i.e. between a white dwarf and black dwarf?) or maybe a neutron star or something? Maybe something between a black hole and neutron star? That would better fit the "collapse" description.

"It was an Xtonic Star. But that's ancient history, 400,000 years ago." Wait, I know that star...

"Carbon 46" "And the definition of that is?" "Diamonds. This is a diamond mine. The entire surface of this planet was once made out of diamonds" WAIT I KNOW THAT PLANET...

Holy shit, so this is a Midnight sequel?! No wonder the sceptical tone felt so strong (also tbf I saw something comparing the episode to Midnight, but didn't realise how strong the connection was going to be!)

The monster perked when it heard the Doctor was an expert, didn't it...?

Oh, this soundtrack! With the trumpets blaring. Was that from Midnight or another episode? It sounds kinda Twelve era, but I expect I'm wrong. (Future edit: I checked, it's definitely from Midnight. It's part of the same named song on the Series 4 soundtrack.)

I wonder... if Earth's been destroyed/erased, were the events of that episode effected? How many of the Midnight passengers, if any, were actually human again? If none, maybe it's uneffected?

This is some interesting development for the Midnight entity. So it's some sort of 'perspective'-based creature, always behind the person it's attached to. Feels very Weeping Angel-like, though it's clearly not just a matter of sight. It seems to be linked to the direction Aliss is facing.

"It can't be behind from every angle." "Try telling it that" YESSS, non-euclidean creature, let's go.

A shame this episode kinda kills the "dying TARDIS" theory of it though. Though worth noting this is the same episode Belinda had the translation circuit introduced to her, which is key to that whole idea?

"If it was a clock face, then you die at midnight."... that's a little bit of a stretch... I get it from their perspective, but surely hands at 6 o'clock would be a better comparison?

Side note... did we ever find out when Midnight took place exactly? Right now, I assumed if was the 51st century, but I don't think that's canon. We know it was around 400,000 years ago at a point 500,000 years in the future. So it's a bit further forward than we thought. Actually halfway towards the 200,000 future of human empire era of Series 1 now I think about it, though still 100,000 years away so it's not significant.

Side note 2: 400,000 years isn't a very long for a star to die in? It's fictional granted, but I wonder what type of star Midnight's sun is meant to be. I guess it could have already been in its last days? But the process of dying is meant to be slow in most cases. It presumably would have to have been quite a big star, as the larger they are the quicker they burn out. This seemingly rules out the fading white dwarf theory, since it takes forever for that to happen (fun fact: we believe there isn't a single black dwarf in the universe yet!). A neutron star / black hole intermediary state is a bit more likely, which might place the star right around the Chandresekhar limit which JWST and other telescopes are searching for bodies around. That's still not that much more massive than the Sun though, so the star really must have already been old in Midnight.

"It has fun. Oh, it played games" Interesting. This fits, but gives the creature an even more malevolent feeling, than its learning state we saw (though it was clearly more malicious when it fully took over Sky and possessed the Doctor). The mention of games almost makes me think this will link back to the Pantheon or similar creatures in some way.

As if Midnight wasn't dangerous enough, now everyone's got guns.

Is Aliss even still 'her'? If so, it seems to be a change in MO for the entity.

"Please don't turn your back on me." Oh, you know that was an "a-ha" moment at the writing desk!

"My old friend. You have waited 400,000 years. Who are you? Are you there? What are you?" Are we about to get something crazy?

"It knows my name." WHAT. LIKE, 'NAME' NAME? Now I want some to analyse those whisper and see if they can discern anything. If the whisper we hear here is what the Doctor's hearing, it almost sounds just like two or three syllables. Could just be "Doctor" but doesn't sound like it. Sounds closer to "Theta" if anything...

On the other hand, it's clearly more than what we hear, so there's not much to conclude. The Doctor reacts a LOT more while we hear nothing, so there might be some telepathic contact taking place too.

(Does that mean Series 4 now has three episodes in a row with characters who know the Doctor's name? River and the entity?)

"Oh yes, there it is." Ah, for a second we were seeing the Doctor get possessed again! Can you imagine if the Doctor turned and suddenly started acting like the released Sky did at the end of Midnight? I know some of y'all have theorised it could happen in a way involving the Master, but I would love to see Ncuti get a villainous moment, like the Cyberplanner or in 42 (speaking of which, there was a brief second I thought we were talking about that star earlier!).

Ha, I knew the Mercury was significant. So it destroyed the mirrors itself then? Quite "Little Nightmares"-y, plus I swear from something else too, but I can't remember.

"Mercury 16" Oh come on, that isn't an isotope either. I guess it must be some configuration of Mercury, based on the diamond thing (maybe this is why Mercury vapour isn't an issue when it gets spilled - though I suppose even if it was, both the soldiers and the Doctor and Bel have whatever they'd need to heal the exposure).

Oh, so is it attacking something behind it involuntary? Weird... If so, that might explain what happened to the cockpit in Midnight. But did anyone go behind Sky in that episode. Although actually, there have been a few points where it seemingly could have struck previously (e.g. as Cassio walked to the other side of the room and Aliss turned), so maybe there is some control to it? The rules are a bit unclear, but that comes with non-euclidity I guess.

It seems interestingly to be linked to the line of sight specifically? The Doctor told people not to look earlier, so maybe not looking at it when you're facing it is enough to be safe? That would explain the screaming before gettng thrown too. It's like some sort of defensive mechanism to hide and avoid being seen, which is apparently harmful even to itself - very Weeping Angel-like again. Like the entity only attacks when it can gurantee it can kill whatever sees it. But apparently its peripharies (e.g. over the shoulder) aren't so vital.

"I want to see it" How very Listen of you, Doctor. At least he only seems to get a glimpse in the shadows and isn't attacked the same way.

I didn't see it first time watching, but just realised they did actually reuse the orange spacesuit! Aliss wears it when they escort her out, though it's clearly been retouched in grey to serve as a miner's spacesuit. I wonder how many of those suits have actually been made and reused? Given it fits Aliss's actress, maybe this is one of the ones fitted for Jodie, Jenna, or Mandip?

I knew everyone just getting out felt a bit too easy...

Jesus, something tells me this is going to remind Belinda how dangerous this is again, after the relatively comfortably story last time. The Doctor's sacrificial play probably helped solidify her trust of him, but I don't think she'll be as carefree about sticking around as it looked like she was going to be.

Interesting no-one questions if Belinda nearly dying would be enough to move the entity to Shaya. (Future edit: knowing it didn't actually go to her shows how flimsy this really was. It's also a nice reminder that the thing is intelligent, and doesn't have rules it needs to follow. After all, why should it go to the killer? It probably only did so previously because they were the most convenient nearby body. Or actually, in retrospect, I guess that, like it looked for the most intelligent person in the room in Midnight, this time it's just looking for its safest way out. In the past, that's been sticking with whoever kills the previous host - "survival of the fittest", after all (not that that's what that phrase really means) - but here, it knows Shaya is ready to sacrifice herself, so there's no point leeching onto her. It also doesn't go with the Doctor, as this time he's too smart, and would catch and stop it. Belinda was a good try, but her odds now probably seem to low (plus maybe her being shot would have effected it too?). The better option is to pick someone else in the room: not a soldier - but the group's quieter nurse.

I feel like Shaya running away face forwards could have been done a bit more carefully, given she was almost throwing everyone behind her. (Future edit, again: given the final twist, this makes more sense...)

Also, she kinda comes across as another Doctor parallel doesn't she? Like with Mr Pye last episode, here "running across the galaxy" to bring hope (again that theme). Feels like the kinda thing that could be setting up the Doctor to sacrifice himself some way in the final episode this series.

This music as she sacrifices itself sounds familiar again? I'd assume from Midnight, but it sounds more like something from Girl in the Fireplace. A lot of repeated soundtracks this year so far. Mostly reasonable choices, but Amy's theme and the This is Gallifrey bit feel like they could be arbitrary choices. I hope Murray Gold put some thought into it and it's not more of a Time of the Doctor situation where they had limited recording time and had to reuse some themes (as much as I love the Long Song / Infinite Potential returning for Eleven's regeneration). I wonder if there's more subtle Midnight callbacks in this episode's soundtrack I missed? Whether there are or not, I will say I did love the soundtrack this episode, including the more original bits. (Future edit: Again, I checked this. I don't think it's actually Madame de Pompadour, which is what I was thinking. I think it's just a similar sounding theme, either original to this episode, or possibly unreleased from Midnight.)

Mrs Flood again. So the use of the vindicators IS important, including to whatever she's thinking. Again... is my theory that they're accidentally messing with Earth's position in the Web of Time correct?!

Actually defeating the Midnight entity (albeit not killing it), rather than just surviving felt a little bit of a shame, so it actually sucessfully getting out does boost this ending quite a bit! Now I just kinda hope we get a third story to complete the trilogy, as it's quite a cliffhanger. Maybe that could be the one to actually reveal more about it?

Ooh, the credits give the entity a name (or lack thereof) for crediting. "It Has No Name". It seems to be a male actor, maybe whoever did the glimpses of it on set? The whispers sounded more feminine to me.

Overall thoughts

I really liked this one, even if it was a bit of a disappointing follow-up. Definitely doesn't match up to Midnight in terms of the tension and anxiety, even if I was feeling it early on. Maybe more should have been done with Cassio's coup - we could have seen more and more whispers among the crew members over the story? The room most of the action takes place in is also way too big, so you don't get the same claustrophobia. That being said, between this and the entity's behaviour itself, I get you don't just want to do Midnight, but again. I still think it was a good and creepy story, but the comparison to Midnight kinda makes it look worse by comparison. We also don't get the same breakdown of the Doctor's character behaviour, though again I understand you can't just do the same thing again. It more just happens in the background here, mostly via Cassio. On the bright side, I'd argue we've gotten a similar breakdown of Fifteen from Belinda just a couple episodes ago, so I'm not too upset.

Meeting the entity again is cool though, especially with it seemingly recognising the Doctor. The implication that it learned the Doctor's name is a bit of a bombshell, even if it sadly didn't amount to anything. Its shows of force are neat, quite poltergeist-y, and matches up with the cockpit getting torn off in the previous episode, but overall it didn't really match the creepiness of that episode. I'm kinda shocked we never got a point of it mimicking someone again (can you imagine if it was doing so throughout, and when we got to the airlock Belinda suddenly started repeating people's words!). It seems a lot more physical rather than psychological / mental in this episode. On the otherhand, the MO change does kinda make sense. It's been 400,000 years after all - it was only really doing what it did in the first place to learn! Probably doesn't need to learn anything else at this point. Learning more about it, like its connection to perception, was pretty cool too.

I liked the characters in this episode - while some crew members were clearly more "redshirt"-y, a few of them like Cassio, Shaya and Mo stood out, as did Aliss. I really loved how you could feel the different communication barriers coming across through the episode, between the discussion of signing, the soldiers turning off their captions to speak without Aliss hearing (though, as she says, she can definitely lipread some of it) and the Doctor making an effort rather than just relying on the automatic captioning. The latter in particular feels like a bit of a relevant topic, given I've just recently seen "anti-DEI" talk turn to the idea of getting rid of interpretors and just having subtitles available. Again, I'm not audibly or visually impaired (just shortsighted), so I'm probably not the best person to talk about it, but there've been plenty of discussions especially on Tumblr on why this is a bad conclusion to come to.

One thing I'll say, less about the current episode and more in general - maybe this is just me, but do modern DW episodes tend to feel a bit underdeveloped? Not in terms of editing (though I'd argue some changes could have been made to the last few episodes, as much as I liked them) but in terms of plot pacing? It feels like a lot more happened in older episodes, whereas nowadays I check the time part way through and am surprised how close we are to the end - it sometimes feels like we could have done more with the concepts, scenery etc. Maybe it's just a matter of growing up and your attention span / information processing changing (if anything, I'm glad I seem to be going that way in terms of paying attention, rather than the opposite!). On the other hand, maybe this is evidence we need to bring back mid-season multi-parters, or at least the 50+ min episodes we got more of in Capaldi's run.

Ruby next week! I'm surprised it's a Ruby episode with the Doctor and Belinda actually on Earth, I thought it was going to be more of a Doctor-lite episode with her. When is it going to be set? I assume last year or something - too long for Bel to hang around on Earth? Also, "boyfriend", "pheromones", what is this, Torchwood?

Jack was smiling— there was no scoff, no flat expression, no strained, polite look of interest.

Genuinely grinning, she thinks.

Even if it is silly— at least Jack found amusing a good way.

'Okay. Well, I have a few things. First — nothing you say sounds stupid, and my job should never dissuade you from telling me anything, or worrying about sounding stupid. You’re smarter than half of the people I work with, you know.'

Oh. Alice just kind of nods at that at first, because it's a lot, and she's not even sure she believes Jack— at being smarter than half his colleagues— but it's a really nice sentiment, anyway.

Throughout this whole visit, Jack had never tried to posture with her. Never tried to leverage his status, or act a bit distant or removed. Very immediately, he was stir-frying her greens. The next day, lending her his shirt.

Maybe that's why Alice was so quick to allow her feelings to leap over professional boundaries.

So Alice just swallows. Nods again, for good measure, and taps her thumbs a bit idly.

"Okay." She looks at him keenly. "I'll never, uh— hold myself back on my account." Alice knocks the heel of her foot against the pool wall. "Not that you ever made me feel like I should, I should point out."

But then—

'And second… I’m in. I will say though, I feel like there should be a curve, for me specifically, because you have thirty years of experience, and this is the first time I’ve ever tried such an activity. So.'

Ah. Excellent. Another willing Snack Stacker; the first non-Shaw. If Alice had ten tears, she wouldn't begin to be able to type out how much that tickled her.

'Who usually won? Between you and Rebekkah and the rest of your family?'

A pause— Alice wanted to brag, but decides for honesty.

"So— Victoria, my little sister, she would win a lot. I don't know. She's got freaky python genetics I think, but I need you to understand that I won a lot too!"

Not as much. Irritatingly, not enough.

"And secondly you will get a tutorial from me. No curve grading, though. Your hands are already way bigger than mine so you can probably stack better."

Alice knew— because she'd felt them when they danced.

Of course Jack remembered the comically tall sandwiches from Scooby-Doo. They always looked so appetizing. What Alice was describing sounded even better, somehow. Snack Stacks. A plethora of both salty and sweet, stacked on top of the other.

Jack imagined a young Alice with her dark haired sisters and a mess of snacks surrounding them. Jack was smiling so widely that his cheeks were starting to hurt, but … it was a good type of pain.

"And— I am well aware of how stupid this sounds, to someone who makes national policy, but. This is how we do it.”

Alice shrugged.

She was probably smarter than him. She was probably wise enough to make her mistakes behind closed doors, unlike Jack, who seemed to have a fetish for documenting his disastrous life.

God. Jack and his fucking competitive nature. He was totally kidding though. He'd gladly lose to Alice on this.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

The story above is the reason I’ve felt nothing but disgust towards the 1st of May as a holiday, since my childhood. Which is objectively silly. It’s an international day for commemorating the fight for workers’ rights, a generally genuinely good cause, no matter how twisted it became in the ussr. I wasn’t personally affected by the holiday or the celebration of it; when I was growing up it was simply no longer a thing, at least not in the spaces I’ve spent time in. But every time the topic of the Chornobyl catastrophe would come up, my mom would tell the same story.

She was a child living with her family in Kyiv at that time. Her dad, who had some contacts a bit higher up in the party due to his work, got a call (early in the morning, I think) after the tragedy happened. They told him an accident happened, and the leaders weren’t gonna say anything for now, but that it was dangerous to stay up north of Ukraine. So he gathered his kids (including my mom) and sent them far away (to russia, ironically, but that’s where their relatives lived), because no matter how suspicious it might look, and no matter what trouble he might get in because of it, he was gonna try and protect his kids at the very least.

And my mom would always say that, of course, she wasn’t really that bothered about it all at that time. She was a kid, nobody explained anything to her, people had no fucking idea about what was happening themselves, they wouldn’t have been able to share it with others even if they wanted. But she remembers how later, the thing that people around her, her relatives, would talk about wasn’t even the catastrophe itself(again, there was no factual information available), but the 1st of May demonstration in Kyiv that year.

A demonstration that the communist party forbade to cancel. A demonstration that for many people was forced, and yeah, not many people seem to want to mention stuff like this nowadays, but a huge amount of those workers that were supposed to be “celebrated” had no choice but to participate in it, every single time. Because it’s an event organised by the party! Isn’t that lovely, look how they care for you! Nope, you can’t miss it, what, are you tired of your job/position? Are you not happy in this beautiful country of ours, the best place on earth for a worker like yourself?

120 THOUSAND people (residents and guests of the city) were walking the streets, 5 DAYS after a NUCLEAR CATASTROPHE that released an estimated 400 times more radioactive material into the environment than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Those people put on their best clothes, they gathered their families, and with their elders and their small children they went around, holding the fucking red flags and the portraits of the fucking “leaders”, while the radiation levels in the city skyrocketed.

Honestly, it IS almost poetic in its cruel absurdity. “The party of/for the workers” forcing the workers on the streets to get a good dose of radiation because it needs to maintain its image and power. That shit’s straight out of some anti utopian book.

So yeah, anyway. I dunno. Hearing this story since I was a kid is definitely one of the reasons I almost snorted out loud when we started to learn about ussr in school and the teacher was explaining the whole “workers’ revolution” bullshit to us. I feel like this kind of lesson almost every Ukrainian learns through one family story or another (I do also have a Holodomor story and oooohh boy. not sharing that), so it feels almost weird sharing it like this. Like, surely everyone knows. And I’m just making myself upset and angry for no reason, picking the scabs off of the wounds that aren’t even my own, but that I’ve just somehow inherited? But if the last few years have shown me anything, it’s that people continue to have hard-ons about the worst fucking cunts in history, and we have to be very, very vocal, CONSTANTLY, about whose boots exactly they are so eager to drool over.

today is the 39th anniversary of Chornobyl's Nuclear Disaster.

it is the biggest technological disaster ever experienced by humanity, but before that - it's a tragedy. it's a tragedy of thousands of people across Ukraine and neighbouring countries. it's a tragedy, caused by stubbornness, hypocrisy and stupidity of people in power in the USSR.

it was caused by negligence, flaws in the reactor's construction and criminal pride and secrecy of the USSR's government. it was civilians who paid the price -- more than five million people, most of whom weren't liquidators of the disaster's consequences.

my family was affected too. my great uncle, my grandfather's brother, was one of the firemen taking part in extinguishing the raging reactor. he worked in Pereyaslav's fire department and was sent to Pripyat the night of the disaster. a year later, on the second day of Easter, he died. the cause was written to be a "heart attack due to chemical changes in the blood".

my mother was a child back then, and wasn't too far from Pripyat. she had the ID of Chornobyl's Disaster victims.

Chornobyl is a scar on Ukraine's land and it's people. it's a scar that won't go out for a long, long time — if ever. nuclear fuel will decay, but the memories won't. and they shouldn't ever.

the memory of everyone who gave their life so we can still live here should be honoured. commemorating it is the least we can do.

bringing up the topic of Chornobyl shouldn't be followed by laughter -- it should be followed by a moment of silence.

my favourite pearl and aimsey interaction has to be valentine's day. pearl was streaming and it was late night for her [usual stream time] but for aimsey it was more late afternoon

"Hair dyes or perms or just a quick snip, you can always count on your ol' pal Clip!"

it's about time i officially shared my design for Clip from my hairdresser au! here's the silly boi himself!

a.k.a. the most complicated character i've ever designed...

close ups and additional comments under the cut!

that's my boi, despite his crazy design, i love him. his silly top knot hat, the horn-like points around his faceplate, his speckled colours, his four arms, and his funky pants. he's just soooooo fun.

Clip likes to play games and knit! he even made the patchwork pants he wears (he made Sun and Moon a pair too, but they're too precious for them to wear... also a little gaudy to wear in public—doesn't stop Clip tho!). He actually makes everything the boys wear, since there's not a lot of things in their size/shape.

instead of resting at night, he can be found in their living room, playing Kirby 64 for the nth time and/or knitting something. he's just too restless to stay still, he's always gotta be doing something and if it isn't gaming, knitting, or hairdressing, then he's up to No GoodTM.

Clip... likes popping balloons. he says "Goodnight!" with each popped balloon and once he's done, he tosses up the scraps like confetti all while giggling joyfully.

needless to say, he is not fun at parties. Sun and Moon don't let him near balloons for this reason.

and yes, he has sewing needles on hand at all times. for fashion emergencies... and for unsuspecting balloons.

Clip's not allowed to have a phone (just imagine all the in-app purchases Sun and Moon would have to deal with), but he likes to keep up with his customers and their games, even if he doesn't get their fixation over bluenets he'll never openly admit it but he prefers curly-haired blond hunks that look sweet in soft pastels but could also squash him like the spider he is

also, he's great at microbraiding! though i imagine if Sun and Moon are free, they'd come help to shorten the wait but also to compete and see who braids the most (Clip always wins of course—make anything into a game, and he's winning)

aaaaand there's this! i wanted to make sure Clip would be able to freely rotate his waist so his arms could have their full range of motion, and this was the solution i came up with: a crop top on top and a wrap around his waist. and Clip here is being a sneaky little scamp about it.

@zaizai-11037 Decided to make a whole post about this because I realized I actually have A LOT to say about this. Hope that’s okay lol

Ok, the first thing is that Lord Lucifer is not a human. You don’t feel jealous when you see the sun shining on someone else’s face because you too can go out and stand in the sunlight. You don’t get jealous that someone across the planet is seeing the moon, because you know you will see her in a few hours. Lucifer is not a man, he is a spirit that can be embodied. He is in the artist’s pen and the poet’s tongue, he is the raven caw and the howling wind. I try not to anthropomorphize him *too much*, because he is not a human. He’s not an invisible man. He is everywhere at once, and I know that he’s still with me even when I can’t see him. He’s still with me when he’s with everyone else.

The other thing is knowing that he’s still speaking to me through his interactions with others. That’s why I love reading other people’s experiences so much, I learn more about him through them. And sometimes those posts inspire me to approach him with new questions. I feel a kinship with others who know him like this, I’m excited and relieved to know I’m not the only one. My immediate response is usually awe rather than jealousy.

And lastly, my Lucifer is mine. Every relationship every person has with him is unique. Lucifer may have many lovers but none of them are the same. I don’t yearn to experience what others are experiencing, I’m busy having my own experiences. It’s nice to witness them experiencing something similar to me, we can relate to each other. But no one else is ever going to be what I am to him, and the same applies to everyone he has ever had a relationship with. My Lucifer talks to me and manifests to me differently than he does to anyone else, even if he uses a few of the same tricks.

I was going to end this post here, but I think that would be a bit dishonest. To be completely real, I DO get a little bit jealous sometimes lol. It’s one of those things that is illogical and unavoidable sometimes, feeling that way isn’t wrong, especially when it is uncontrollable. Such is the way of the human heart. I saw a post from an amazing artist who painted a beautiful piece for him and their caption said something like “I want to be his personal painter” and I was like !!IM! His personal painter!!!

It’s silly lol, and it’s fun to laugh about it. Having jealousy isn’t really the issue, the actions one takes afterwards however may be.

The thing that has always made it easier for me has been Lucifer’s reaction himself. I know he’s just happy to have two painters. He seems to find it endearing when I find myself in these little ruts. My eagerness to please him, to compensate for my slight jealousy, only means I’ll be more vigorous in my devotion. And in some weird way, his teasing makes everything feel less serious.

“Oh, are you working hard for me, my boy?”

“That seemed to strike a nerve, are you going to make me a painting too now?“

He has a sense of pride knowing that I do get jealous, that I do want to be favoured. And I gain fulfillment from my increased efforts.

and i don’t even know if I should say this, but the realest answer of them all is sometimes I do get jealous and I just act like a brat. That’s it. He’s extremely in tune with my mood and he notices the slightest hint of attitude- and then he’s immediately present.

“what’s your problem?”

“who are you looking at like that?”

sometimes the only good answer is to just ask for attention, and Lucifer luckily is usually very willing to give it. He has never turned away from me when I needed him, even when all I needed was validation. He is never too far away and he will always come when I call. He’s very good at easing my obsessive mind.

So the tldr is: asides from the whole not a human being thing, Lord Lucifer is really good at keeping his hoes in check

So happy that Lord Lucifer has other followers … cause on the days I don’t have the time or energy to be at my altar or offer him something, I’m so so relieved to see posts from other Luciferians talking about what they did with him that day. It’s like, oh, thank Gods, there are others leaving him sweet treats and writing him poems and showering him in praises today. He still has the support of his cult behind him even when I’m away, he’s not alone. And seeing other people’s experiences just makes me even more excited to reunite with him. I love seeing his little quirks appear in other people’s conversations with him.

OKAY the analysis.

Thank you so much for going into so much detail, I'm glad my perceptions were in the right direction (I cannot believe that I did not once use the word condescending I am very upset because that's exactly what I was trying to say but I'll cut myself a touch of slack since I wrote this in one sitting @-@)

Yes, exactly. He sounds condescending, he sounds annoyingly playful, like he gets right on your nerves, and he's being overly sweet with his cadence while being a little shit~ I am so interested to see like JUST how rude he is to a Japanese person here.

Here's the thing then. I think it might make SOME sense, then, the way they did (or directed) the en version. Though it isnt the original, maybe they were trying to get the same effect, the same level of 'offence' as it were, from his lines. But I'm still of the opinion that the way JP does it is better.

In en, hes literally just pissy and shitty, that's it. He's annoyed. In jp he doesn't get annoyed he is ANNOYING he's playing like I said. I just love this version, the playful little shitness that makes you want to strangle him.

And yk the fact I still am intrigued by him in jp after he's been a little shit is allowed more I suppose by the fact I don't experience those very disrespectful word endings and things a JP speaker would, but still get everything else. So it like doesn't quiteee meet the mark of being really offensive, it just pisses me off. (Also he's supposed to be at least slightly redeemable-able right, not just the biggest truest dickhead that you hate and then gets a sobby backstory)

It makes perfect sense for aventurine to be like that. He shrouds himself in the status and armour of silly intelligent superiority, that's his whole thing. It's the character he plays, the performance he does, he's a peacock for fsakee.

If you want to yap more please do~ don't feel like it's too much I was planning to do more scenes this way, just because I find it fun, and see how in each bit (I'm especially interested in the last and important parts of his arc) it differs, having your input has been so good !!

An unnecessarily detailed analysis of the differences in perceptions and characterisation between the EN and JP versions of Aventurine ~ (voicelines included)

I cannot speak or understand japanese, but am exposed to it often through anime and playing some of my games in jp. So I appreciate my perceptions of cadence may be skewed by that :3 it would be cool if someone who does could discuss this too and whether they agree with my points !!

So...I'm doing this because it was stuck on my mind and I couldn't draw today since my arm hurts and i needed something else to do ~ I genuinely think your perception of Aventurine as a character could be very different based on your 'version' you experienced !!

so if you have some time to spare, any interest in this or Aven, or kinda hate Aven and are open to someone changing your mind... let us begin on this journe- lol. im not gonna do that. lets just get into it ~

this is gonna be an analysis of the differences in voiceline delivery in terms of feel and implications. at the end of each set of voicelines i also give a little summary in terms of the 'goal' of that version of Aventurine by giving the line that way.

So this is the first time we meet him, interrupting us in the line at the desk to check in. Listen to his EN version ~

Hotel security is on high alert with zero room for error. And with such a last minute change it really isnt something that this young lady's words can resolve on a whim. My esteemed guests from the astral express - please do not make it harder for her.

Now the instant feeling I get from this is...this guy deems himself a sort of authority, and his voice is heavily lilted with this kind of exaggerated-authority figure-admonishment while his words are still polite. The emphasis is very pointed, very very close to sarcastic. 'sUch a lAst mInute change' ~ he's being rude, essentially, through a very close-to-boundary passive aggression. The way he said esteemed guests, astral express, and the plea, its clear in his words he's almost exasperated by them already. Which is like ?? okay? why? or is this guy just a bit of a dick? - those are my thoughts upon meeting him like this, like...whats this guy's problem.

Now the jp version ~

The feel is rather instantly different. Here, he approaches in a sort of semi-polite intrusion, but still maintaining the sense of authority and knowing. It's matter of fact. He has a sort of ~ to his tone, right? Like he's being a bit passive aggressive but in a gentle almost melodic way, subtle, rather than the voice kinda dripping with 'you guys suck and are causing problems'. The feel I get from this is still like...uh who is this guy, but I don't feel instantly super like hey tf this guy is rude. He isn't outright rude, or admonishing, and he isn't sarcastic either. He doesn't act like 'esteemed guests' is a jab, he means it but has this lilt that makes you think he might not quiteee mean it inside, like you cant tell if he's quite genuine. This is the thing.

The point of Aventurine, his whole thing, is that you cant quite tell if he's being genuine or not. That's what makes you think, makes you squirm, makes you lose your mind over whether you can trust him or he's playing you. That's how he plays his game, his world. The jp one does this effectively instantly from the first line. The en one doesn't give me that impression. I don't feel like he's intelligent and shrewd and wonder if he's playing me, wonder what his deal is, I think he's being a dick. This obviously doesn't have to be clear in every damn line delivery, but in his introduction, and at a time where he IS making a play~ the mood should be set.

EN Aven Goal - pick a bit of a fight, impose status, put them down

JP Aven Goal - suggest status, input presence, subtly jibe

This only increases with the next line I'm focusing on, which is after they ask him who he is. EN version ~

-subordinate to supervisor Diamond. I was cordially invited by the Watchmaker. I also happen to be a traveller that's had to stand behind you for quite a while.

Now, heh, listen. This line honestly makes me laugh so much like... im gonna give you how it sounds to me through the eloquent use of emojis okay:

'sUperVisOr dIaMOnD' 😏😎 i was CORDIALLY invited by - the w a t c h m a k e r~~~~ 💅🏼😌☝🏼🤓 i also happen to be a traveller that's had to stAND behind you for qUiTe a wHiLe 😏😏😏

like...let me take a guy seriously lsdjkdkjsdsdk and listen listen. I KNOW he's supposed to be over the top here. Just the line itself without the voice over is snarky and 😏☝🏼🤓 okay? That's how he is sometimes. But the delivery is DRIPPING in sarcasm and derision. There is NO SUBTLETY even a bit. lol sigh, just listen to the jp~

instantly different. matter of fact, but still cocky and self important, subtle jabs without being rude or sarcastic. He doesn't use the fact he was invited as like...a show of coolness, he just says it like - yes, i was invited by him 😌☝🏼 because why would he? of course he could be invited, hes fucking ipc bro? thats not a flex. and especially when he says the last part about standing behind you - its more like a 'heheh, alas ~' not like ewwwyy peasants im standing behind you, dont you know. He is shrewd, careful, and incredibly eloquent with his speech. He doesn't use it to jab he uses it to play a melodic song of making someone a bit bewildered but impressed by him. His delivery is playful. That little stilted words part, its like a playful passive aggressive jab. He's not actually bothered.

Why would he be interested in picking beef with and looking down upon, which is what he is doing in the EN version, the astral express? There is no reason. This guy is literally interested in the opposite of that, even if he doesn't like people he uses them to his gain, the literal dialogue written here and as the story continues continuously perpetuates that he is trying to get in good/okay graces with them (and others, that's literally his mo) and he can use them and manipulate if needed. It makes no logical sense for him to be so rude here. he is rude with his words and suggestions, but its passive aggression like its supposed to be, not outright rudeness like EN.

EN Aven Goal - shove status down their throats, be a rude boy

JP Aven Goal - feigned nonchalance stating status, gentle prodding and testing with a sort of hehe not quite rudeness

The next one -

just...listen - EN ~

*sigh* I've been waiting here for more than 10 minutes. Do you know how many credits 10 minutes is worth to me?

This is just pure derision. Contempt. The line itself is, too, regardless of delivery. He is being a pp here. In the second half of the line, you can hear him almost grit his teeth. credits, minutes, worth. he's alllmost spitting the words. hissing. He is pissed off, getting actually angry about it, it seems. So self superior.

But listen - JP ~

Exasperated, a bit frustrated, but weary. He's like 'oh goodness, sigh, im wasting so much time here~'. You can almost tell he's playing it up, it still feels almost playful to me, like he's testing, being a cock but stifling a bit of a smirk and feigning a slightly overdramatic sigh. Its melodic, you can imagine him tilting his head and lifting an eyebrow, right?

And this makes so much more sense. The guy isn't in a rush. It's revealed later he literally had that room, and just strolled there and met them before the trailblazer got there. He's playing. He's being his stupid shrewd annoying playful self. Why would he get angry just to get angry? It doesn't fit with his character, or his motives. Why would the Aventurine get actively pissed off with some randos for no reason?

It would also make sense for him to play with this aspect of himself and his role. We know from later events Aventurine really doesn't deeply identify or hold much 'love' for his status or role, other than for specific reasons. It's like a double entendre, he's playing with you, and he's making a subtle joke with himself by playing up this act that he's just some money hungry asshole like his superiors are. Because he's smart. He's not just...an asshole.

EN Aven Goal - make sure his status is shoved so far into their large intestine that they have a baby bump - just coz

JP Aven Goal - sighing and being rather overdramatic in a jibing playful manner, being annoying, still toying with his status

One more set for this scene (and post) (i would apologise but im not sorry im sorry dshjsdjsd YOU CHOSE TO BE HERE ilu.) Here he is after Himeko suggests a solution. EN ~

Heh he's such a prick honestly /aff. lil shit. so, again, the line itself is rather turn-nose-up cheeky asshole type stuff that makes you wanna smack him and roll your eyes simultaneously. The delivery, again, is very: ☝🏼😌 and then 😒🙄. The way he's like 'nOT from YOU' all is sooooooooo childish, sarcastic, icky. like meh, eh, i throw my juicebox on the floor after ive pestered you to open it for me for three hours. the emphasis on the 'you' gives the clear implication he is derisive of 'you', not fond of 'you', and see's 'you' as beneath him in a sardonic and mean manner.

JP~

Matter of fact, playful, still a little shit. He's being purposefully irritating, he's not irritated. That's the clear difference here. Aventurine through this whole exchange has been, in the JP version, unflappable. He gives this effortless air of authority while making subtle clever half-jabs that make you both slightly flustered, confused, irritated, and intrigued the whole time. He is a charmer, a weaver of well placed webs.

This, to me, is how I prefer it. His theme, his thing, is playing. Cards, poker, life, anything. He plays, he gambles, and he never shows his emotions much behind that ever present smile - as said in his wiki page even. He is a man of subtlety, one that you can never quite work out and he wants it that way. And I think the jp version of him does that for me ~

Overall, for me, a summary of what I'm taking away from this exchange with him in both versions is:

EN Aven Goal - ??? wanted to be a dick, flaunt status

JP Aven Goal - flaunting, being difficult and annoying, but finding it a bit amusing? what's this guy's deal, anyway?

I think that's the thing. I would totally understand and be quite with you if you didn't like Aventurine from this scene alone if you played the EN. He is a character that is being a dick just...because? Thinks you're below him, puts himself into your business for no reason, etc. etc. I don't like him, like this.

But coming away from the JP one, I'm intrigued. I'm slightly ruffled, a bit irritated and confused, but intrigued. I want to know what his deal is. It draws me to him, almost begrudgingly. That's what's so beautiful about a character like this.

Both VA's are awesome and did a great job in different ways ~ Its cool to me how such a different feel for a character can be gleaned from the same lines but different deliveries. I'll probably make more parts of this through the game <3
