I've been watching some more of Slay the Princess now that the pristine cut is out (this post wont discuss spoilers or mention what happens there!!) and it got me thinking about the Damsel again, since she's one of my faves. I guess I'm weak against the romantic aesthetic and this poor girl who was forced to kill her savior because the world demands the cycle of violence out of them.

I was thinking about when you pressure her into wanting more than to bring you happiness again and again till she no longer looks human, just the sketch of a character, and man I when I tell you I HATED it when I first saw that and watched everyone come to the conclusion she always was this smooth husk of a character with no interiority in this route. Like let a girl be agreeable oof. But I thought about it a lot and I actually think I like this version of the ending when I came to my own conclusion of why it happens.

The princess changes not only between chapters but inside them in more subtle ways depending on your feedback in each chapter (this is pretty noticeable in chp 1 where her form starts to shift in the end matching what she's becoming next - btw I love bug eyed princess with one hand she is precious) so as I see it 1- putting her on a feedback loop where you keep asking the same question trying to force a change just exausts how many ways there is to answer so it simplifies itself to basics, like when someone keeps asking the same shit so you end up with a succinct way to say it in the end. If its that its a fun reference to how games work with choices. Or/and

2- She changes physically because your opinion in her changes there. I thought of that because of the way the player choices are written in this part and because of how Hero acts in this route. While the other voices have their perspectives firmly in place, the Hero can be persuaded to to think a lot of different things, putting him closer to the player when it comes to flexibility. One thing notable about him in this route is that the Hero is weirded the fuck out. When chp 1 Princess brings up cutting her hand, he offers understanding that she probably would do anything for freedom, he can justify a lot of her words there depending where you go in chapter 1. With the Damsel he is very off-put when she suggested to cut her off again (I don't think he knew she remembered they already did that? Anyways double standerts tsk tsk lol) and in general he is suspicious of her agreeable nature and is the one to edge the player to ask. The Smitten in contrast is in the same page with the Damsel in this version of the route and also prioritizes making her happy, it's the fact they are so in sync that makes leaving with her so easy in this route when you normally have to sacrifice so much to get there. So I think what could be happening here is that the player is losing respect for the Damsel in universe by going off on their suspicions on someone that appears too good to be true and the way she visually simplifies is indicative of them seeing her as more and more of a caricature of herself for sticking to her view since they think she should want other things. In that way the scenario is purposely upsetting as you perceive someone you once respected to engage as an equal with less and less humanity and she changes to match you less favorable view in this feedback loop.

Idk just some thoughts, I think more people will appreciate the Damsel with a new chapter 3 out, but I genuinely don't think you "flatted" her character just buy getting to this route. I think you can choose to regard her as so and continue the trend of the princess getting less and less human the more you deny her humanity.

okay actually looked at the lover boy wip intro again and this has me crazy because the grief in this was meant to all be about bobby but "remember that his favourite fruit was peaches and try not to cry over it" got me because felix's favourite fruit being peaches is like. a recent but definitive part of his character. and i can't remember if i just used peaches as a placeholder for bobby's favourite fruit (he does not give peach to me) and if i first wrote this before or after i decided peaches were felix's BUT now i'm like. what if this passage is him grieving bobby but it spirals around his grief for his relationship with felix??? find a lover the way you found felix and don't lose him this time but also find a lover because you're trying to find a connection as deep as the one you had with your best friend even though you know it can never be replicated. you can never find a lover that will love you like bobby (platonic, to be clear) loved you. find a lover in the fact you are alive even though it makes you nauseous because it just reminds you that your best friend isn't. how do you grieve someone who's still alive whilst simultaneously grieve someone who isnt? trying to grieve two people in two different ways and you feel guilty at the way they blend and blur because it feels like you lose your separate grips on both of them and you don't feel like you have space in you to accommodate all this ache. and like what if i edited all this to make that parallel more clear?? that his primary grief is bobby because he's the one who's dead but he's also grieving felix and probably doesn't even realise it?? and then the two become blurred?? and if he realised this he would actually feel fucking awful about it and like a bad friend?? haha just kidding unless??

Yknow, ever since the HB episode "Western Energy" came out & some time has passed, I'm surprised I don't see a whole lot of coverage for this one phone call scene between Striker and Stella .o.

Like, by now we all know how Stella generally operates as a character within the show; raging hateful harpy around Stolas, a distant/indifferent(?) mom around Octavia, a childish ditz around Andrealphus...

...and yet, with hired assassin Striker, Stella's surprisingly pretty... cordial with him? To the point of calling him "darling" and offering big money payouts as compensation? Huh... interesting... 🤔🤔

(Idk if this'll lead to anything "significant" within canon, knowing the show's/Stella's current writing rn... buuut ngl, I lowkey wouldn't mind if we got more scenes of just these two in terms of learning how they came to team up. Especially with Striker's deep hate for the monarchy & Stella's (+most Goetia's in-general) low treatment of Imps... how exactly did these two reach the point of having this subtle, lowkey-respect together? :o)

i think a lot od people forget that time is not a universal thing, we're dealing with an alien planet and culture that would realistically be far off from ours

our sense of time is simply a mesurement. so irk would most likely never develop measurements of time that fall close to ours. my personal headcanon is that for every 1 earth year is 13.7 irken years because thats simply how their calendars work. the time mesaured itself has some space gravity weirdness warpyness but mostly it is very very similar.

so in my stuff, it starts at augest 26th and zim is 16 (birthday is march 20th) while dib is 15 but has a month or so to turn 16 (birthday is september 22nd). so in irk years, zim is 225.2 and dib is 218.2. my irk divides age groups in multiples of 30, so they would be in the same age range on irk

theyre the same age.

like if you take the “Zim is a kid in the show” stance then child zadr seems so weird the second you age up the characters at all. Cuz it takes so long for irkens to age the equivalent of one human year (aka dib would be 22 by the time Zim ages ‘one’ year)

or if you take the opposite stance, you can’t have zadr and the show at the same time (which is sad bc the show so good??? hate leaving it out of anything)

I can see both sides that are viewing him right now. Yes, you can consider him being rude and/or apathetic to Pomni's plight, but I think it should also be considered that he's, well... spoiled, has low empathy, and also isn't aware of the AIs being sentient, so of course he'd react poorly to Pomni chewing him out- I mean, c'mon, if you were isekaied into a video game and one of the characters started yelling at you, you wouldn't be too pleased, either. As an autistic girl myself (with high empathy, might I add) I probably would've started crying mid-argument and left, even with Bubble trying to get me to stay ngl

While I do think and hope someone, yk, informs him "hey, the AIs can become sentient, and many of them don't like humans, so be careful with what you say", I do also understand his own problems.

this is gonna be SO long and rambly sorry anyway i saw a post abt how babel does queer characters and it got me thinking abt why the tropes it uses would usually turn me off other stories but didn’t here

MAJOR BABEL SPOILERS //

i feel like i’d be more mad abt how robinramy ended up in babel if it marketed itself as queer lit at all or if its fans were going “WOW AMAZING QUEER REP” abt it. but no one told me any of that, so finding out they were gay was just a fun little bonus surprise to me. i get why ppl are eh abt robinramy not getting together/technically still being subtext (which i dont think is really true btw like the book literally says “robin was falling in love” but idk i guess if you were stupid you might’ve assumed that it was falling in love with oxford given how romantic some of the other language is (WHICH IS ALSO THE POINT bc i think robin’s friendship with ramy blurring into romance is why he romanticised like all his friendships/experiences in oxford BUT IM GETTING OFF-TOPIC)). i just think robin’s repression abt being gay was intrinsically tied to his attitudes on imperialism (wrt refusing to acknowledge anything that complicated his life until it was too late) and i don’t consider it a cop out or queerbait. like i genuinely don’t think robinramy could ever have gotten together without drastic alterations being made in terms of plot and character. plus i think it’s clear that kuang didn’t want to write a story with any kind of focus on romance at all, because it’s not that kind of book. there’s no successful het romance either, so it grates a lot less. the only reason romance is included at all is to show the ways in which white entitlement manifests. so the tragic way robinramy played out just made sense to me.

and i speak as someone who accidentally spoiled myself on You Know What in the middle of reading and i was like ugghh boooo dreading it the whole time expecting to roll my eyes when it happened but then when it did i was like. wow im actually not that mad LMFAO 😭😭😭 actually thematically the book sets it up so well that i believed that this was unfortunately the only way it could’ve gone. babel is about the loss and tragedy and grief that colonised people experience. it’s about the lengths people will go to to uphold empire and the lengths ppl will go to to tear it down like idk 😭 i guess it is bury your gays but it didnt bother me this time because i thought it fit thematically ❤️ i enjoy tragedy as a genre a lot and i would’ve made it gay anyway you know. thanks rf kuang for doing it for me so i didnt have to.

WHICH IS ALL TO SAY that i guess if you’re going into babel for the queer rep without appreciating that the story is fundamentally a tragedy it would feel like it’s just reusing tired tropes….. but i think the choices kuang made were rly deliberate and not in a way that feels like trauma porn or shock value. the book is fundamentally about the struggles of poc so the layer of queerness that was introduced felt like a subtle extension of the experiences of characters of colour in the book, and i enjoyed and related to it as a queer chinese person who kind of realised they had to prioritise their fight for the liberation of poc over queerness mainly because the idea of western queer liberation cannot be dissociated from imperialism and many aspects of homophobia as we know it was an export of christian european empire into our colonised countries in the first place and FUCK THIS IS A WHOLE OTHER TANGENT ABOUT HOW I THINK RAMY AS A CHARACTER IS EMBLEMATIC OF THE TENSION AND STRUGGLE THAT QUEER POC DIASPORA HAVE BETWEEN OUR IDENTITIES GODDAMNIT OK FORGET IT POST CANCELLED i just rly think babel’s handling of queer characters is fine and makes sense and i like it personally and maybe i will make a coherent analysis about it one day but that day is not today byeeeeeee

And it’s probably confirmed in an interview, and probably be more of a confirmation of their feeling and the wrap up of their dance w each other:

basically what im putting together is that dave was REALLY fixin to spend some time with jade. extending into her sphere of interests that he doesnt express much with anyone else; you can tell he really wanted to engage with her in a less irony poisoned way. he’s softer with her than his other friends and god forbid the trolls, he is much less skeptical about things when talking to her (he even questions why he just seems to go along with her eccentric precognitive statements but he doesnt change his attitude about it), he showers her with his music and raps to the point where jade is expectant of getting poetry from him. rap IS poetry. please realize that dave is sending her his poetry, regardless of how goofy it may be. this is the level on which im viewing this at and once you realize this theres no going back. there comes a time in every homestuck’s life where they have to see how dave interacted jade and conclude that he had a cute little puppy crush on her unbeknownst to either of them. and it was adorable. and now, in the year 2023, it’s your time to realize this too. no going back.

and btw it all came back around…………………nimblest son of a bitch who had the gumption to glue a nasty pair of latex cat lips to his face

ok ANYWAY tinhatting time. honestly it's soo hard to piece together any kind of timeline or characterisation of their rs bc theyre not really as blatant about it as some other rpf ships..not counting one way trigger. also im not smart enough to have a concrete analysis of this song. i kinda read it as like, something something the strokes staying together and not branching out despite them clearly being really dysfunctional?? like being afraid to break whatever kind of shaky balance they'd managed to find. and the song is kind of a love letter to them in light of that. but also this is a very shaky interpretation ok idk what im talking about

theres a lot of push and pull in this song..you can also narrow your focus from the strokes generally to just albert and julian (bc tbh a lot of strokes/adjacent songs can be read both ways and in fact i think a lot of the time theyre best read as being about both the band and albert/julian's relationship simultaneously)
