One trope I kind of adore is when there's a character who's introduced as comic relief with some goofy traits.

Then later in the story it's revealed that this goofy trait is the result of a seriously fucked up backstory and then you feel awful for laughing at them the whole time.

Lysithea knows standing in a doorway while reading isn't... smart, per se, but this book on how to best utilize Swarm is getting really interesting and she wants to make sure she has it down before...

Lysithea knew the library had been decorated - she had put in effort to exempt her section of it from the decor, but... there certainly was a festive mood in the air of the library. And that was not something she knew what to do with.

Especially with the string bean staring at her.

another poisonous little cluster of plants, and another girl standing underneath it. honestly, linhardt would stare at lysithea twice as intensely on a normal day even if she weren't standing under poison. actually, is that any good for her? what if it makes her sick? she's more prone to getting sick, and it's likely from the stress of her crests and all the magical energies that imbues her with (or at least that's linhardt's current theory).

none of this gets voiced, of course. if linhardt spoke their mind too much, it would just get too tedious to listen to themself twice. no, they begin by answering her question, "not yet. i don't know how prone to shedding their leaves that dried mistletoe are though, and you're -"

he stops, suddenly, face lighting up. he's remembered what he's supposed to do about it, and he's supposed to do that with one of his favorite people? his luck is turning around indeed.

pink colors his cheeks. okay, so they're supposed to kiss her, yet how? there's definitely different types of kisses, and lysithea's hands are full so she won't like if they take one to bring to their lips. so...

linhardt tilts his head and leans in, and sets a chaste kiss to the top of her head. something flutters in his stomach. he hasn't really done many kisses. it's a little exciting.

For Alfonse, the notion of hunting down a beast was a quandary he wasn't entirely prepared to solve. He knew well of Fódlan's divine beasts, but hunting them down wantonly... he wasn't entirely prepared to take that step. He had never seen a Fódlan that found a way to revert the transformation, but he wasn't willing to rule out the possibility of doing so. He wouldn't have a hand in it, though. Not outside of any that actually made it into Askr, and at present, that didn't seem to be something he needed to worry about.

From Alfonse's outsider perspective, crest stones and dragonstones seemed as though they could hold significant similarities; both held immense, innate magical power tied to the blood of the dragon associated with it. Sure, dragonstones weren't a part of their owner's body (...usually), but it didn't seem out of the question for there to be parallels worth exploring. Divine beasts, therefore, presented quite the ethical dilemma for him, as the potential for snuffing out a life that could possibly be saved was one he didn't find himself too keen on. The exact nature of the creature they were hunting remained elusive to him at present, however. For all he knew, it could be on the order of Magvel's man-eating spiders (or worse), and thus eradication may not be unwarranted.

This, however, was a new issue entirely. The hum of an insectoid automaton flitting to and fro created a constant reminder that there was another party involved in this hunt. In fact, it made him quite uneasy, as he hadn't yet had the chance to inspect their design, but at a glance they were reminiscent of the sort of tool Eitri would have created. Imagining that she may have infiltrated this world as well was an unpleasant thought. The way it responded to commands, too, left him uncertain of how to feel; it was almost too smart, like it understood everything completely and wasn't just trained or programmed to act in a specific way.

"...Lysithea, do you-- these little... bugs," Alfonse inquired, gesturing to the automaton flitting about in the air, "do you have any sense for what they are? I'm not particularly in tune with magics myself, so I'm unsure if what I ask is ridiculous, but do they... feel magical? I'm... trying to figure out if it's just a tool or if there's something more to these little things."

That was to say nothing of their quarry. He knew they'd have to broach that topic sooner or later. This was just a sort of social scouting-- her feelings on the bug could suggest what he might expect about her knowledge of divine beasts.

Felix and Lysithea?

Let's do this.

It felt like hours. Watching her poking at the dense lump on her plate. Felix had promised her that upon her return from visiting Derdriu, he'd have mastered at least one recipe. A single cake. He wasn't a bad cook, but he wasn't exactly a good one either. 'Serviceable' was most likely the most appropriate word. Regardless of his skills, however, he was sure that he'd manage something with only four ingredients.

And yet, the pound cake was a beast far more demonic than one he could strike down with a blade. First attempt was burnt beyond recognition. Second was a crumbling mess. Third was as dry and hard as stone. He had to take a break after attempt number ten, so as not to rob the entire territory of the basics.

This cake was attempt number eleven. A little burnt, and he'd forgotten to properly grease the mold before putting it into the oven. He'd hoped the icing would be enough to hide any imperfections.

Lysithea slowly took a bite. Then another. Each one a little faster than the last. And soon she was reaching to cut herself another piece.

"So....how is it?" Felix asked slowly. “Do you like it?”

"It's wonderful!" she answered cheerfully. "A little overcooked on the outside, but still really moist and sweet! And the icing is perfectly covering the top."

"And that's....good?"

She nodded, shoving a few more pieces into her mouth. "Absolutely! A balance of icing to cake is actually a lot more difficult to master than people reali- cough!"

"Hey, take it easy! Don't eat so fast!" Felix gently pat her back, passing her a cup of milk tea.

Lysithea took a swig, letting out a sigh as she regained her breath. "Sorry. It's just so tasty." She held up her fork, offering him a piece. "Knowing you, you haven't tried it yet. Go ahead!"

Trying to ignore the burning sensation in his cheeks, Felix took a bite.

"Well?"

"It's...not bad, I guess," he admitted. "A little too sweet for my tastes, but...I'd have it again. I think I can do better next time."

Lysithea smiled. "I'm glad there will be a next time."

You can't just shovel garbage into my mouth and expect me to be content with my meal!"

"... Why would I give you a refund? It is not my fault you are unhappy with your order..." Ena clears his throat quietly, looking around the restaurant for any coworker who may be able to help her, "... The employee handbook states I will have to remove any unruly customers. If you do not calm down... you will leave me with no choice."

In FE3H Hanneman and Alois' support chain is about how Hanneman thinks the ability to do magic is potentially tied to whether or not a person has a crest/crest blood in them

It made me wonder so I just had a look at the list of spells people can learn, and it's pretty interesting

For clarity, I said all the fire/thunder/ice/wind spells were reason/black and anything with a Greek letter was dark

Of the 14 non-crested people:

7 can only learn 5 spells (Caspar, Petra, Ashe, Raphael, Cyril, Alois, Gilbert)

1 can learn 6 (Dedue)

3 can learn 7 (Ignatz, Leonie, Shamir)

3 can learn 8 (Hubert, Dorothea, Manuela)

For the 26 crested people:

4 people learn 10 spells (Linhardt, Lysithea, Constance, Hapi)

5 people learn 9 (Mercedes, Marianne, Hanneman, Flayn, Yuri)

7 people learn 8 (Edelgard, Ferdinand, Bernadetta, Annette, Sylvain, Claude, Lorenz)

I added in a line to take into account of whether they are major or minor crests, but it doesn't seem to make much difference overall I don't think?

So the lowest number of spells is the non-crested 5 against crested 6, and the highest number is the crested 10 against non-crested 8, which tracks pretty well with Hanneman's theory

But that then makes me go back to what started me on this little investigation, of wondering if magic is done completely differently outside of Fodlan, considering that Morfis is the metropolis of magic and it's extremely unlikely that the people living there all have the same sort of crests/crest blood as people in Fodlan do.

Unless Morfis only became the magic capital after a bunch of Nabatean's moved there to get away from everything happening in Fodlan...?

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

That he's a murderer, and a patricide at that.

In past FEs and especially in Genealogy, voluntary kinslaying is presented as pretty much the worst crime you can commit, and a shorthand indicating that a character is an irredeemable monster who needs to die (ex. Chagall, Andrey). There are multiple conversations to that effect in FE4, and it crops up in a few other games as well; it's why the big Gaiden/Echoes twist is meant to hit as hard as it does, or why Ashnard has zero redeeming qualities when his backstory essentially amounts to "removing" his entire family.

And meanwhile Hubert's over here casually killing his father offscreen in two separate continuities for no greater reason than political expedience, and sometimes even getting away with it. Koei-Tecmo doesn't appear to place the same moral weight on kinslaying, since Dimitri, Claude, and...Ferdinand all perform such an act onscreen in Hopes (hmm, I wonder if the reason Edelgard is the only house leader excluded here has anything to do with the topic of my latest video...?), but I don't think that detracts from Hubert committing Obvious Villain Act #1 and giving not one single solitary fuck about it.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

Mostly his Lysithea supports in Hopes, which try to spin him as loving his mother and younger sister in spite of the aforementioned gleeful kinslaying. You can't tell me he wouldn't murder his other relatives if he believed they somehow posed a threat to Edelgard's reign. Like a few of his other Hopes supports, it's a conspicuously cutesy spin on a character who otherwise escapes the generally ridiculous ways that the writing of both games attempts to make Edelgard and Jeritza sympathetic. (She draws pictures of her teacher! He likes kittens and ice cream!)

8. What’s something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Related to the above, any attempt at softening Hubert. He's a calculating, ruthless murderer who would do literally anything if he thought it would further Edelgard's rule even if it's behind her back or she expressly forbids it, because he - in that standard incel vein - thinks he knows what a woman wants better than she does. That characterization has the potential for so much black comedy, especially when thrown up against the guileless and indefatigable Ferdinand.

Why anyone would want to throw that away and replace it with an angsty emo who's not really a bad guy once you get to know him is beyond me. If you want an angsty guy with a massive guilt complex, Dimitri's right there and even gayer.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

When we first got his character intro in spring 2019: "He looks like Iago. He's going to push Edelgard into evil, or betray her halfway through the story...but still be playable, probably?"

Now, he's every bit as ugly and evil as I expected, and then some. Carries the constantly-faltering tone of Crimson Flower on his bony shoulders, a badass dark mage and a playable patricide, and to top it all off he's bisexual in a way that none of the bi-for-Byleth options can even touch, and unlike Dimitri fandom at large has turned Ferdibert into his most popular ship. One of the mostly unexpectedly good characters to have come out of FE16, considering that at the end of the day he still pretty much is "but what if we made Iago playable?"

Only the darkness and frigid air surrounds them, and even though Erk relights his flame and sweeps it quickly around the area, there is nothing in sight. Either he's going crazy or she is. At with her reaction, he's certainly leaning towards the latter.

He grabs the tome that he always keeps at his side, just in case the worst were to happen and he could not rely on his fledgling skills in Fodlan's magic, unbuckling it with deft hands from its straps and flicking it open. The steps are a familiar song and dance, the triangulation of his runes before him nearly perfect. Even with the explosion of light from the blaze - which he tried so carefully to aim in between the trees - he still cannot see a single thing.

There is no ghost at all.

"You're losing your mind. Let me escort you back to the monastery," He frowns, snatching back his cloak from where it had been dropped in her panic and sweeping it back over his body fluidly. He feels his cheeks burn as bright as his flames as he continues to speak, "I don't feel content leaving you out here... all alone with your sanity breaking. I may have my issues with," He pauses again, making a vague gesture because he cannot find the words that he is thinking of, "but despite that, it would be improper of me to leave someone who might in danger in a precarious situation... or... or something like that!"

what pokemon would your characters from spitfire have? (sorry if you dont know all that much about pokemon)

my knowledge of pokemon is SO spotty past the first two gens and most of my knowledge is from my wife so i think most of these are gonna be mostly VIBES instead of specific pokemon so if yall have suggestions im all ears

feon: honestly not sure wjat to do about feon since like… they might just BE a pokemon, you know? like a legendary dragon pokemon with the ability to take human form. but i also feel like that is a really weird answer to give considering all the sex they have with humans.

so assuming they are a trainer, they would definitely have a charizard. feon would pick pokemon that looked really Cool and would probably mostly have dragons.

caed: i think at least for the aesthetic/patriotism he’d have to have at least one pokemon that was dragon and/or fire type. im gonna say he has a centiscorch because devin had one in their sword/shield team and i liked him a lot. and caed would have at least one steel pokemong for sword boy reasons. probably that sword/shield pokemon everyone hates thats just a sword and/or shield.

but also he just has a cubone. for SAD boy reasons.

allene: definitely psychic pokemon!! im not sure which ones. she’d probably want pokemon that could help with her work in one way or another so she’d defs have a rotom. i think that’s how it’s spelled. she’d also have at least one ice type to help her traverse harsh voswainina winters.

lysithea: primary types i can see for her would be fairy, dark, and water. she defs has one of those fancy new rapidashes. maybe a ninetails just bc it suits her idk. the one that looks like a key ring with the headcanon that it could help her pick locks lol

fidelity: i think fidelity has two kinds of pokemon: 1. relatively weak ‘mon that are cute, frequently common/unwanted sometimes early route mon that ppl always try to get rid of, like an unevolved caterpie or furret. does cutiefly fall under this category? i have no idea when in its game it pops up i just know it has fidelity vibes. 2. pokemon abandoned/unwanted by other trainers for various reasons. maybe it looks scary but is weak. maybe it’s just stinky because its a gloom (coincidentally my favorite pokemon when i was a child).

clemence: i have nothing other than new pokemon snap to base this on, but i think she’d have a gardevoir. idk why. just has the right vibes. maybe a carbink idk anything about it but i think clemence would collect rare/lesser seen pokemon, but not necessarily powerful ones. i think she would take pride in finding hidden gems and bringing them into light. not in like a boastful, egotistical way, but clemence is someone who finds satisfaction in polishing and bringing appreciation to the rare gems.

The dining hall, a staple of the community for their quality and variety of foods on offer.

Yet not a thing stood out to the candy-loving thief, who looked over the menu several times, and was a bit disappointed that the "desserts" category was looking a bit sparse.

No matter. Gaius pulled himself a seat at one of the tables, glancing around the room quickly for a moment, just to see if anyone was paying attention. Who would care enough to rat him out for bringing outside food into the hall, anyway.

Quickly and without hesitation, Gaius reached into his shirt, pulling out several pastries and cookies, each one wrapped lovingly in handkerchiefs with candies embroidered carefully into its silken threads.

In his gloves are scones, each one wrapped just as lovingly and decoratively, along with an assortment of confections-- hard candies, soft candies, and all in flavors like caramel, chocolate, fudge...

Just when it seems like the pile of sweets grows ever-higher, Gaius hums a happy sound to himself and starts unwrapping... before snapping his fingers quietly, having forgotten about the lollipops he'd stuffed in his boot.
