Oh, great, as if his life couldn’t get any worse. First, he was born into a family where parental guidance, support, and affection were prohibited. Then, he got disowned for repudiating his father’s wishes, and consequently, swerved the lands, forests, meadows, and towns of Faerûn for literal decades, only to wind up in the most deplorable district in Baldur’s Gate. Fortunately, after myriads of years of floundering his way up in the circles of society, he finally managed to clamber out of the mire that was poverty. At last, he could pursue the career he’d always dreamt of. He was a successful bard, member of a talented troupe, he was on his way of making a name for himself. That was, until those tentacled freaks abducted him and shoved a mind flayer parasite in his eye. And, of course, to make matters even worse, the nautiloid, his prison, had been under attack, shot out of the heavens, causing him to plummet to his death. The only twist, however, to his tale, was that he hadn’t died. Not that this predicament was any more desirable: stranded on a beach, all alone and surrounded by a scenery foreign to him, the grove nearby, full of selfish and xenophobic druids and not a single healer to aid him with his ocular malady, and now, this — a deceased dwarf, claiming the elf was some sort of True Soul. Luran had not the faintest of clues what that entailed, and he certainly didn’t want to find out, but his ignorance had antagonised the two humans who’d been desperate to safe their perished leader. (Who on earth would go poking their dense, dull-witted heads in an owlbear liar, while those creatures were notorious for their ferocious nature?)

Fatigued and annoyed, Luran regarded the two humans as they yanked their weapons from their sheaths and pointed the blades at him. Perhaps happening upon the grove and the merchants was a godsend; the longsword he’d obtained there would prove to be his most valuable companion. Still, he didn’t know what he’d done wrong, didn’t fathom the impact of his ignorance. Not that it mattered, for he had no other choice but to eliminate his adversaries — no amount of deceptive rambling could get him out of this hellhole now... Unfortunately, the humans were startlingly and disconcertingly agile and swift, and nicked the exquisite fabric of his attire within mere seconds. A sigh left his lips as he seized the hilt of the sword and swung it at his opponents. The woman ducked, the man did too, but was a tad too slow and the blade drew a deep gash in his shoulder.

Though, the elf had injured him, the man retaliated, the sun reflected in the metal of his own blade, which Luran, craftily, managed to parry by holding the longsword vertically. Unfortunately, this action left his right flank unprotected, which the woman and her mace took advantage of. The blow to his side destabilised him, almost knocking him prone. Some of his ribs cracked under the forceful impact, eliciting a groan of pain from him. Stellar... He tried to ignore the discomfort, which increased with every movement, and lashed out, pivoting around his axis, building up momentum for his longsword, and engraved a cavernous, crimson red cleft right across her face. She sagged, like a burlap sack of flour, on the grass and bled out.

A cry of anguish mingled with grief, pierced his pointy ears before he felt the searing pain of metal penetrating his skin and muscles — his other side. Luran gritted his teeth to muffle a cry of his own, and burrowed his sword deep into the man’s chest. The cultist retracted his blade out of reflex, causing warm blood to ooze out of the wound he’d inflicted. Instinctively, Luran covered it with his hand, applying pressure, and watched how the other fell victim to his wrath.

The commotion, the distinct sounds of a tussle, ebbed away, leaving the high-elf hunched in pain, his injuries aching, throbbing, with two — three — dead bodies lying at his feet. Fan-fucking-tastic...

There was something that concerned her, though. It wouldn't be very restrained, yet she had to ask.

wuxia, xianxia, and cultivation differences meta

translations: wuxia 武俠, xianxia 仙俠, and cultivation 修真/修仙 (xīuzhēn/xīuxiān)

think i've seen posts on this eons ago, and i'm pretty sure there are tons of these online, but since this has been written up already let's just have another one.

wuxia 武俠

wuxia and xianxia sound similar, but basically for wuxia it is about the pugilistic world (江湖 jiānghú). It is relatively more down-to-earth, and people practice martial arts ("kungfu") in their current life -- they do not do it to become xians (仙) and gods (神) however.

Like Thousand Autumns and Faraway Wanderers/Word of Honor, it has more historical background and ties to the current court and kingdoms, because people are living in the moment and concern themselves with worldly issues.

Martial arts may seem unrealistic, but in view of chinese fantasy it would be considered "real". It consists of fighting moves and internal energy, which they call qi or nèigōng (內功), and at times you see people flying around, climbing hills and jumping across rooftops which is qīnggōng (輕功).

xianxia 仙俠

A level up would be xianxia, where characters in the story cultivate to become xians (and gods, like in the heaven official's blessing). They don't really care about earthly issues here now, because their ambitions lie beyond the current world, and cultivation, getting stronger, and an immortal life are majorly all their goals.

You may not always see them working towards that purpose, such as in mdzs they are considered a lower-xianxia society (低魔), meaning people don't go through all the steps of cultivation and only stay at the stage before the "golden core" stage.

In xianxia, characters still learn basic fighting moves aka. martial arts, but to direct the internal energy they use línglì (灵力), zhēnqì (真气), and fǎlì (法力), all xianxia terms you commonly see. "neigong" is practically nonexistent in this genre. That's why people building up their "neigong" instead of "lingli" are likely never going to be able to cultivate.

cultivation 修真/修仙

A subgenre in the xianxia category would be cultivation. Characters actively go through the stages of cultivation, and likely for the MC, because they are the main character, they successfully become a xian and exit the world at the end of the novel.

There are many stages of cultivation, usually defined at the beginning of the novel in the synopsis, and a typical example of the different levels would be this:

练气，筑基，金丹，元婴，化神，炼虚，合体，大乘，渡劫

And with a cursory search, an English translation would be something like this, albeit not with all the cultivation ranks identified.

Qi condensation (练气), Foundation establishment (筑基), Core Formation (金丹), Nascent Soul (元婴), and the names after that vary too greatly with translation and fandom so I'll jump straight to Immortal Ascension

extra info: getting into the philosophy of it all

It'd be interesting to note that the word "xiá" (俠) permeates all these genres. This is something akin to the concept of "hero", but not at all also, and I'd love to speak more on this but this post has already gone way longer than I hoped it would be, so perhaps another day.

Regardless, it is interesting to note that wuxia has a greater emphasis on "xia" than xianxia. (some joke that cultivation doesn't have the word "xia" in it, and much of that is because characters have foregone heroism and focused on gaining powers and working towards ascension instead). As a result, wuxia is more confucianism-oriented, though not without its taoism and buddhism influences.

xianxia, on the other hand, is mainly derived from "dào" (道), from taoism, which is another lengthy concept if I ever get to it.

And some may have heard of the "farming" genre, 种田 (zhòngtián). This has to do with golden fingers (mary sues) in imperialistic china, earning a wealth of money, and all that. It has nothing to do with cultivation, alike they sound in english.

Just frustrated by the media industry rn and I hope you're doing OK. I think it'd be nice if people could afford to be working actors or actresses and sometimes I think that was a luxury for people born before whatever stupid year it doesn't matter.

Mm, the British media industry is in a very difficult spot. Between the COVID and strike backlogs and a general lack of resources commissioners are commissioning less, which means producers are selling less, which means producers don't meet with new writers, which means fewer things get developed and made, which means agents aren't booking actors, which means agents aren't signing new actors, so drama school graduates are graduating into a void, actors aren't working, editors, HMUs, and crew aren't working - I think something like 70% of BECTU members (creative freelancers) are out of work at the moment?

I've had two auditions this year in total so far, both tiny roles. Everything else has been stuff I've arranged myself or direct offers. Everybody I speak to says "Survive Till '25!" Anyone who can get work abroad is doing it, myself included.

Fantasy Novels/Series I Think Are CRIMINALLY Underhyped

Just as the title says, this is simply a list of fantasy novels and series that I think deserve all the hype and yet I basically never see people talking them up. These are not in any kind of order because they're all amazing. If you read any of these please hmu because I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Since the city of Bezim was shaken half into the sea by a magical earthquake, the Inquisitors have policed alchemy with brutal efficiency. Nothing too powerful, too complicated, too much like real magic is allowed–and the careful science that’s left is kept too expensive for any but the rich and indolent to tinker with. Siyon Velo, a glorified errand boy scraping together lesson money from a little inter-planar fetch and carry, doesn’t qualify. But when Siyon accidentally commits a public act of impossible magic, he’s catapulted into the limelight. Except the limelight is a bad place to be when the planes themselves start lurching out of alignment, threatening to send the rest of the city into the sea. finally taking the time to read through the SAG agreement summary and oof, I hope they have an AI town hall soon because...well, there are things to discuss!

so, in case folks are curious, here are my immediate takeaways from the deal as a SAG actor, a SAG producer, and person who is not any kind of expert but spends a lot of time being skeptical of contracts I sign. this is a summation/commentary, not a holistic breakdown of every point, nor even an in-depth discussion of the points I do talk about. and it is, of course, in no way legal advice or voting advice.

this post is already maybe the longest post I've ever written on tumblr (lol) and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. to be clear, nothing I'm saying here represents how I'm going to vote, how I think other actors should vote, or my be-all-end-all stance on a particular issue. this is me reading through, flagging what concerns me, and asking myself questions. and I'm here to take your questions too! though of course my expertise is limited.

the good

self-tape stuff: this is one of the more niche/the thing that the general public will find least interesting, but they've put in a lot of provisions to make sure self-tape auditions have limits (# of pages, no stunts, no nudity, doesn't have to be professionally shot, etc.) which is amazing because these types of auditions have gotten out of control since the pandemic. this feels like a great gain

data transparency: in no world did I think the streamers were ever going to agree to any data sharing with either the wga or sag so even though the data is limited, this still feels huge to me.

folks who sing and dance will be paid for both of those things now, which is great

they've added MLK day and Juneteenth as holidays (about time)

a performer cannot be required to translate their own lines

principal performers are required to be given hair and makeup consultation or reimbursed for obtaining their own services - this seems like a small thing, but it's being put in here pretty much entirely because HMU services have generally been appalling when it comes to textured hair/a variety of skin tones. there's also stuff in here about working to hire more diverse HMU artists

it looks like it's going to be easier/provide a path for folks getting IMDb credits even if they're not credited on screen

miscellany: there's a bunch of gains in wage increases, P&H increases, relocation fees, franchise language etc. that all seem good to me, though my limited knowledge on those subjects prevents me from going in depth on them.

this is not important, but it tickled me, there's a term to replace all instances of "telegraph" in the contract with "email & text" which like...why has it taken us thirty years to do that lol.

the "...hm..."

intimacy coordinators: oof. when I watched the press conference SAG gave, I was fucking thrilled when they said that the new agreement required folks to hire intimacy coordinators for nudity and simulated sex scenes. that was almost reason enough for me to vote for it tbh - not requiring it is the exact reason I voted no on our last contract. however, reading the contract summary now, the exact language is: "Producer must use best efforts to engage an Intimacy Coordinator for scenes involving nudity or simulated sex and will consider in good faith any request by a performer to engage an Intimacy Coordinator for other scenes. Producer shall not retaliate against a performer for requesting an Intimacy Coordinator." this....sucks. "best efforts" and "good faith" are not the same as "required". IMO, an intimacy coordinator is the same thing as having a stunt coordinator or, like, any number of health and safety requirements. OSHA doesn't say you must "in good faith" put your "best effort" to providing fire exits. it's great that performers can request coordinators for any kind of scene, and this is still the strongest language we've ever had in a contract but....c'mon guys.

residuals: look, I can't speak to these new terms in any concrete way. there are increases, there are bonuses for streaming success, there's a whole thing about a fund regarding those successes that I need explained to me more in depth, but overall, it looks like we made some in-roads here. as someone who employs actors under digital distribution contracts that has no residuals (podcasts), I know how genuinely cumbersome the unholy trifecta of "views-success-profit" can be (as in views do not equal success, success does not equal profit, etc.). I also have no sympathy when the majority of companies dealing with that cumbersome trifecta are massive media conglomerates. anyway, long story short, idk if this is good enough, I'm hoping to attend the next info meeting sag has.

the bad

the new hair/makeup provisions are explicitly for principal actors. while I hope it leads to better, more inclusive HMU services all around I haaaate that this implies supporting or background actors (who oftentimes also have to sit in HMU) don't deserve the consideration. (then again, background actors are usually required to do their own HMU/bring their own costumes, but for productions where that's not the case, the same HMU provisions should apply IMO)

as with every contract, there's language that could be stronger, clarity that needs to exist, and important things missing - but this isn't the final contract and I'm not a lawyer, so I'm gonna leave that stuff to the experts.

but, "lauren", you say, "what about all the AI stuff? where does that go?" well, reader, I was planning on including that in the above but it's the hot-button issue right now and I think it's wickedly complicated, so I wanted to break it down separately, after I had a chance to point out all the good-bad-in-between stuff that's not getting talked about.

a note: in my career, I've learned there's two big things to keep in mind when reading a contract you might sign:

what is the worst case interpretation of this language (thank you to my lawyer, prince among men, for teaching me how to do this in practice (that said, anything I say here is not legal advice, he'd also want me to say that lol))

what are you willing to lose/compromise on/what are the limits of your pragmatism? contracts are not about a company giving you everything you want out of the goodness of their heart - it is always a compromise. pragmatism has to be a part of the equation.

so, with that said, I'm going to play a little devil's advocate here, and a) try to find the good/the pragmatic and b) catastrophize the worst case scenario. but first, it might be handy to look at this SAG infographic for some basic definitions. let's go.

the AI good

a ton of stuff here requires consent. that is not a small thing, and the consent continues even after your death (whether it was a yes or no; though this can be complicated by your estate/your union)

the language does establish that the consent must be a separate signing from the employment contract, even if its in the contract, which is great (but more on that below - timing matters)

actors often do get paid for use of their digital replicas, though it's different based on the use/type of replica.

the actor must be provided with a "reasonably specific description of the intended use". this language is vaguer than I would like, because it allows producers to decide what "reasonably specific" and "intended" means - there's always going to be some vagueness when it comes to this specific thing, but a good start would be for producers to require not blanket consent, but conditional consent for each significant use of digital replicas.

if the replicas are being used in other mediums, that must also be consented to, thank god.

replicas cannot be used in place of background actor counts on a given day - if I'm understanding this correctly, this means a production can't just have a bunch of fake background actors by themselves, they have to engage real people up to a certain number first (which in this new contract is 25 for TV and 85 for movies). we're already filling in background with digital people or copy-pasting of the same crowd over and over and have been doing so since at least the late 90s, so it's good we're continuing to put up boundaries around that.

the AI "...hm..."

it's unclear (to me) when an actor can be asked to consent. IMO, everything is meaningless if the consent is happening as part of regular contract negotiations. these things have to happen when - and only when - the actor has already been engaged in a role and feels empowered to say no

the use of independently created replicas (replicas pulled from existing footage, not created by the actor) being allowed without consent under first amendment reasoning - this is obviously concerning a lot of people bc first amendment arguments are so broad. that said, there's a pragmatism part of me that understands this is already happening/has been happening for a while and used in ways I think are perfectly fine - I was just watching the new episode of For All Mankind (one of the best TV shows right now!) and it's an alternate history, which meant that in the opening scenes of this season they had some bonkers good deep fakes of Al Gore saying stuff he never said. I think that's okay to do in a fiction show that imagines a different US history! "but Lauren", you might be saying, "Al Gore isn't a member of SAG!" are you sure? are you positive? because I'm pretty certain he is - he was in several episodes of 30 Rock, way more people are in SAG than you think (every NPR reporter for instance), and the two worst presidents we've had in the last 50 years (yes, those ones), are both definitely members of SAG (even if one is dead). now, the other side of this is that public figures like politicians are under a different social contract than actors, and if they wanted to sue, they could, unlike the average SAG actor who might have their image abused. this is why this is in the "hm" column - deep fakes and parody/satire/commentary use of replicas is already here and there's always going to be a 1st amendment argument to make, so we need to figure out how best to limit those and protect the most vulnerable.

alteration: with this language, a project can digitally alter without consent if the script and performance stays "substantially" the same. again, this language is too mealy-mouthed. I don't know that I have a huge problem with a line of dialogue getting replaced with a digital version of that actors voice if, for instance, a word was mispronounced, or wind garbled the sound or whatever - yes, it would eliminate the need for ADR, but if we put some limit on it like..."if there are more than 5 lines in a given episode/movie that require digital alteration in the service of clarity, the actor must be engaged for an ADR session or paid for the digital replacement" then I could see this being workable. I'm also personally okay with things like costumes being digitally altered but, again, we need limitations on that. digital altering cannot replace the art of costuming but, for instance, if a costume needs to be altered to include a hate symbol or something, I think that's fine (example: I have friends who worked at the VFX house for an alternate history TV show that involved a lot of Nazi costuming and set design - a huge part of that VFX house's job was to put swastikas in places, rather than props making nazi flags. I'm okay with that!) but again, these fringe cases do not a compelling arugment make, and this contract language can be interpreted too broadly for my comfort! like everything else in this "hm" category, I need to see the final contract language to decide.

the AI bad

there's a bunch of circumstances in which actors don't get paid for creating their replica/use of it and those circumstances are too broad for my taste.

synthetic performers - this is just awful. no. no, we should not be allowing AI to generate entire actors. just............no. there's some language about the producers having to talk to the union if the synthetic performer is "used in place of a performer who would have been engaged under this Agreement in a human role" but this doesn't apply to non-human characters so....wouldn't that be all roles?? leaving the producers room to be like "this role has to be synthetic, we never would've cast a human!" is bullshit. also, even if we're having AI create a magical talking unicorn whole cloth (which, like, also no, we have artists for this), that unicorn still needs to be voiced by a human person. this whole section is a disaster.

the exceptions to consent for digital alteration are bad-bad. I talked about the potential ADR replacement above and that has a whole host of issues with it that I didn't even get into, but I can see the argument. the rest are very troubling:

there is an exception under "any circumstance when dubbing or use of a double is permitted under the Codified Basic Agreement or Television Agreement" - okay, so does this mean we can replace dubbing artists and stunt performers entirely? this section is about digital alteration, but who's to say alteration couldn't turn an actor broadly miming a fight into an entirely digital, expertly performed fight that usually a stunt double would have done? with AI translation technology, does this mean we're replacing VO artists for dubs entirely? bad!

similarly, "Adjusting lip and/or other facial or body movement and/or the voice of the performer to a foreign language, or for purposes of changes to dialogue or photography necessary for license or sale to a particular market" - Justine Bateman has a great twitter thread on the terrible puppetry potential of this but I want to draw attention to the particular market bit - we all know that selling to china is such a huge part of studios' strategies that they'll remove entire scenes or lines around queer stuff. to me, this clause makes all of that so much easier. I know the argument here is going to be "we can replace swear words and license it for kids!" which.......sure? fine? but, uh, we already have ways to deal with that? and the potential for abuse here is terrifying to me. with all the digital alteration stuff too, there's just so much icky implication for the beauty/body standard to get so much worse.

if a background actor’s digital replica is used in the role of a principal performer, they'll be paid as if they actually performed the days for that role, which, sure, but uhhhh why are we saying it's okay for a digital replica of a background actor to suddenly be a leading role!?!?! I can't think of anything more demoralizing than going to set to act in background (a job I've done! an important job! a fun job a lot of the time! but creatively limited) and then getting a much bigger role (the dream!) and.....not being able to, you know, act that role or be in scenes with other principal actors or do the thing that you've dedicated your life to doing. nightmare stuff.

woof. there's so much more to say but I'm going to leave it there. these are the concerns I'm going to go into SAG's meetings with, and the concerns I'll be considering as I decide how to vote. I know there are things I didn't address and very possibly things I misinterpreted or misrepresented - if you're an actor, I highly recommend a) reading that Justine Bateman thread and b) attending SAG's meetings to ask questions and express your concerns. and I'd love to hear what y'all think! my ask box is open.

1. Complicated Creation - Elemental

Easily one of the best fics I've ever read. Great world building based on the Ghibli movie Spirited away. We love to see it. The writing and plot are both breath-taking.

It has quirkless Izuku, spirits, dragons, healing and a sprinkle of a classic trope in the MHA fandom, Dadzawa.

2. Hero Class Civil Warfare - RogueDruid

If you have been in the fandom space for at least a couple of months and have been reading fics, you have, 100% heard of RogueDruid. He has, hands down, some of the most captivating work in the whole of the internet. One of the classics, is HCCW. It has inspired a lot of other fics, which had gone the class War route (hmu if u want reccs). Incredibly well done, the EFFORT that went into this had to be astounding. There isn't a single miss.

Without spoiling too much, the class 1 A and 1 B, have a final exam. The exam in this world, is a war between villain and heros. Izuku is put into the position of the leader of the villains, the Kingpin while his rival, the Paragon, is none other than Katsuki Bakugou. We get a mastermind Izuku, characters from 1 B, that I personally never cared much for, before reading this fic and more.

3. Mastermind: Strategist for Hire by Clouds

Staying in the villain Izuku waters, I present Mastermind. A part of a series called For the want of a nail, that follows different universes in which Izuku stays quirkless. Mastermind is a personal favourite. It's the second installment of the series and has an ongoing sequel. (The series includes Viridian: the green guide, Deku? I think he's some pro, Chet Code: support strategist and two more, which aren't completed yet).

Here, Izuku stays quirkless as he loses any hope left for the hero society. He, unfortunately for the world, is stupidly smart and easily gained a fearsome reputation, for being the best strategist for hire for villains. After realizing the world sucks and he, in fact, doesn't, Izuku becomes a villain the likes héroes have never seen before.

4. The Mystery of Student No.18 by cloud_nine_and_three_quarters

Another author, that has me by the scruff of my goddamm neck. Went for my throat every fuckin time. I will name the other fics later but lemme tell you about this one.

It's the second fic in the list, that has Izuku with OFA. This time though, Izuku stayed true to his self-sacrificing roots and got himself into a coma. While in his lovely sleeping beauty-esk state, OFA keeps giving him energy and thus an once of a lifetime opportunity to become a ghost. Yes you heard that right. He becomes a ghost and lightly haunts his class. The fic is golden, funny and just a little bit sad.

The other three fics, just as good as this one are Canary, Why are we here again? and Displacement.

5. Yesterday upon the stair by PitvViperOfDoom

Keeping with the ghost theme, we have the one and only YUTS. Again, world building is of the charts great. A great quirk and awesome themes with unexpected turns and plots. The gist is, Izuku can see ghosts. This story is one of the rare ones where Nana Shimura (my beloved) plays a bigger role than usual. Definitely chdck out the additional parts of the series though at that point it goes slightly into more crack waters but it's still incredible.

6. [Content] by Teobot

Taking a sharp turn into morally grey vigilante route, we get this great first part of an incredible ongoing series. There are two parts done and the wait is always worth it.

7. Assignment: Personality Swap by BelleAmant

First I wanted to recc their vigilante Izuku fic (Vigil, Ante and their vigilante antics) but I must admit, while a classic, it hasn't been as impactful to the fandom as Personality Swap has been. Both with its incredible humor, bit of angst and quirk fuckery the whole series has been nothing but hits.

8. Another form of power by Jade_Tatsu

Veering directly back into villain Izuku, this one was a breath of fresh air. I once got tired of villain Izuku that was either forced to be a villain or was just a vigilante but darker, so I went on a search and found this. The series All for power, is a 4 part ENTIRELY COMPLETED series, about politician villain Izuku. The first part is told mostly through the eyes of Kurogiri and I swear, it's my favorite of the all.

9. How Seven (7) Dead Heroes Stopped Being Bored by ScottishSunshine

Crack inspired, but more All for one focused that Izuku, but still most things happen because of the Midoriya family so it counts. It's good and fun and an interesting read especially of you're fond of Dad for one.

10. Prodigal by writerllofllworlds

And for the end, let's get our hearts crushed just a little.

An angst filled suspected traitor AU. In my humble opinion, very few have ever truly succeeded in writing a traitor AU, nearly as good as this one. I like it in most part because Izuku goes through hell and back, and I just am like that. It's epic.

Was this list an exuse to talk about fics I like? Yes. But do i feel like everyone who like BNHA should read these?

So I've been watching My Hero Academia and like

GOD ALL THE TODOROKI FAMILY BAGGAGE HURTS SO GOOD.

Like damn. What a complicated situation. I love that all the kids are handling things differently. I've already figured out the (obvious) Touya twist and BOY do I hope we get a reverse Darth Vader moment with that.

But also like. Fuck Endeavor with a rusty spork. He's a terrible terrible person. But gosh what a good character. That contrast between being a Great Hero and a Terrible, Abusive Father is a deeply compelling story, is definitely a part of how the show interrogates the idea of heros and the complexities around a society and culture of heros and villains.

We already see that complexity with All Might, and how by becoming a Symbol of Peace he's made it so he can't do anything but destroy his own body and still try to put on the smiling face for the public, and when he forcibly can't do that that anymore, for a few moments, the public turns on him, until he shows he's /still/given all of himself for the "Greater Good". Which is heartbreaking, and fascinating, I hope between him and Deku we get to examine that dynamic a bit more.

But that's like.....the needs of an individual being put aside for the expectations of society and how by being There for Everyone All The Time, All Might unintentionally became part of a system that can't really survive without him, so he can never leave, until he's forced to, and the plot becomes how society deals with that sudden lose of security.

With Endeavor, it's like. How do you come to terms with the duality of this person. He's saved so many lives, and in doing so, in his status rising because of his heroics, he turns around and commits atrocities. But it's not so much society forcing him into a corner like I think All Might is. Yeah societal expectations of heros probably played some part, but I think the larger part is the narrative pointing out how Endeavor's own drive, while I think coming from an initially good place, is corrupted by his own way of viewing the world.

We know he cares for people, he clearly can manage that on wider, impersonal scale. But he can't, or doesn't, apply that to his own family, because his own drive and desire to Be Better Than All Might outweighs everything else when he's not out in hero mode, thus: a Good Hero and at the same time, an Abusive Asshole Father.

And I like that, at least so far, the characters and the narrative won't let him forget that! Even as he tries to "fix things", I like how, as far as his family is concerned, he can't! He can try, but Natsuo and Shota, and even Fuyami, have no reason to trust him, and even less to forgive him, and I like that they say that! Like, good! I'm glad he's trying to be better, but fuck him!

AND I like that we see Shota seeing that juxtaposition of Good Hero v Terrible Father. I love that scene where he straight up says, "Don't pretend to be a good parent in front of my friends. I'm here for Endeavor, not Enji ((that's his name right?)) Todoroki, and I'm only here because it will benefit me and my training."

I don't entirely know where I'm going with this but it's all just! Such a good story! And there are so many other bits I could ramble on about (Fucking!!!! Bakugo???? Listen, as someone who was bullied for uhhhhh most of my pre-uni school life, if this were real I'd have OPINION. But it's NOT it's FICTION and GOD Bakugo and Izuku and their fucked up co-dependant situationship delights me, what delicious storytelling!!!) but I'm currently watching the Todoroki Backstories episodes of season 5 and ANNOYED (Read: delighted, again this narrative is WORKING SO WELL) that I'm so invested in Endeavor and his painfully slow realization of just how badly he fucked up!

Anyway, I'm gonna need so Todoroki Family Time Travel Fix-It aus please, because I want Rei and All Her Children to not get Backstory Trauma, so if anyone has recs (or like. MHA recs in general) HMU!

Idk maybe I'm just upset bc the maker under fire is one of my favourites and I really look up to them as a textile artist, but it's super disheartening seeing them open up about repeat burnout and depression making it impossible to continue work only to see other makers coming out of the woodwork to self promote saying "if you want a fursuit from someone responsible who doesn't suck hmu!!!". Yoohoo, guess who's hereee!!! Anyways, I missed writing for Blades, and I needed some training for certain events going on rn (which I haven't begun but shhh). I hope you guys like my vision of Imtura's rage and grief, and that if you want to be tagged in next parts, lmk!

Those were Imtura’s very first thoughts upon Brienne, her dear friend, being abducted by a weird purple creature.

As Nia dropped to her knees, Imtura’s horror was instead replaced by anger. She was about to leap after her, but the vortex was already gone.

She let out a blood-curling grunt “Why didn’t any of you move?!”

“Not now, Immy…” Loola tried to calm her down.

As they took Nia to her chambers, her green fists whitened in her palm. Why were they fussing over the priestess?! Brienne needed them!

“That’s not fair, Imtura,” Tyril had pointed out when Imtura hollered that “we need to find her together, and she’s hurting. We all are.”

“Hurting why? Less hurting and more hunting down the bastard who took her and bring Brienne home!” She shouted.

“And where would we start, hm? We’ve no idea where she is, what took her, or where to start. Do you plan to barge into every place, axes blazing, and demand they hand Brienne over?” Mal tried to reason… to no avail.

“Why not?! It’s better than sitting our asses here and play a pity party!”

Tyril finally snapped in his usually fancy boy manner “Then you do it. We will find reasonable places where she’s been abducted and send you a message when we do find her.”

Imtura threw her hands up “Maybe I will!”

She left to her room, where she kicked the bed and screamed again, then started gathering the little she had packed from home. If one could call Flotilla home. As she turned around, Threep and Loola were perched on the desk, looking at her.

“I don’t have any treats for you. Tell the others I’m off to search for Brienne.”

“You really should not.”

“Loola’s right. Your plan can’t and won’t work. You need the others.” Imtura snorted “It’s true. You need Tyril’s knowledge and fighting skills, Mal’s cunning and Nia’s Light magic for you to survive on your own.”

Imtura seethed, but let the nespers say their piece “Threep has a point. Separated, the search will be a disaster, but together, you four can make it work.”

“Maybe. If Brienne were here to keep us together. Because she’s not here. The reason we put up with one another is because Brienne was here because…” she sighed, tears prickling in her eyes “because we all loved her enough to do that. And now she’s not here.”

Loola observed her “So you only loved Brienne? Only Brienne was your friend?”

“I—no! Yes! I don’t know! You’re confusing me!”

“Mal never made you laugh? Allowed you to let loose? Drank ale with you and shared adventuring stories?”

“Yes—,”

“Tyril never gave you sage advice and guided you through all of Morella? Kept you grounded and focused on the mission?”

“I mean, yes, but—,”

“And Nia never tended to your wounds, made you smile when all was dark and listened to you when you needed a willing and non-judging ear?”

Imtura’s shoulders slumped “…Yes. She did. They all did.”

Loola perched on her shoulder “Just because Brienne’s gone doesn’t mean that everything you went through with them didn’t matter or impact you. Yes, maybe you loved Brienne most, but you love all of them, and them you, and you can’t do this without them, just as they can’t do this without you. They need you, and you need them. They are your friends. Not for a long time, but for a very important time.”

Imtura softened and scratched Loola’s chin, who purred in response “Thank you, Loola, I… I think I needed to hear that.”

“And have some sense knocked into you.” Threep added.

“Don’t push it. But yes,” She smiled.

Dropping her bag, she went downstairs, to the library, where she knew they were, planning on rescuing Brienne. She sat down beside Mal and looked with renewed confidence and resolve at Tyril “What’s the plan?”

Tyril smiled briefly and nodded in gratitude to her “Whatever took her doesn’t look Morellan, so it’s safe to say we need to look outside its borders. We’ll begin with…”

Kade whispered in her ear “Brienne would be proud of you.”

She allowed herself a small smile.

She hoped she was.

For three months after Brienne’s disappearance, Imtura felt hopeful. Despite the dead ends and the pointless fighting that were responded with a sincere ‘we do not have or know where your friend is’, Imtura maintained hope. She wanted to. Because Brienne had always been a beacon of hope. Of resilience. Of persistence. She’d never give Imtura up, ever. And neither would she.

As they slept on the tent, Imtura smiled at herself thinking of the few, but precious time that Brienne and her shared a bed. She knew that she wasn’t Brienne’s type –she had noticed how elf boy and the priestess made eyes at her – but was alright with being a good shag and an understanding friend whom she could take the baggage she didn’t want to give anyone else. Besides, nobody was married off to nobody. There’d be plenty of time to figure out what each of them wanted.

“Hmmhh, Brienne…” Tyril mumbled.

Oh great, she thought, now elf boy’s pining for her in his dreams.

There was no jealousy or envy in her tone, but an amused and nostalgic sentiment. Brienne had also whispered Tyril’s name sometimes in her sleep. She sort of giggled when it sounded like they were recreating that one myth between the she-orc and the elf who had such a good shag, the fancy elf needed bed-rest for days. She teased Brienne endlessly for it, and they both had a laugh about it.

Six months. Six bloody months, and still no sign of her. Not a single trace. As if Earth had swallowed her.

Maybe earth did swallow her, an intrusive voice of hers mused.

Shaking her head, she continued talking and trying to be cheered by Mal. They still had a laugh, but with the void of Brienne being so present between them, sometimes it felt hard to do. She missed how she looked back at them and shook her head, laughing to herself.

Walking forward, she reached Mal, who was oddly quiet “Do you think this is it? That, this time, we’ll find her?”

Mal sighed “I hope so. I want it to be.”

Imtura’s face fell “But you don’t believe it is.”

He looked at her with a tired, pained look “I’m trying to, Immy.”

She patted his shoulder “…I am too.”

On the eighth month, she got fed up. The anger she felt back then was back, and this time, there weren’t any wisdom nespers who could convince her. She was dead in a ditch to never be found, and they were all loosing time.

“Alright, elephant in the room, I’ll address it: Bree’s gone, probably dead in a ditch and we’re running, hic, circles.”

Tyril seemed to sigh, but with her blurry vision due to the obscene amount of alcohol she had drank, she couldn’t see much. But the image of Brienne in an unmarked grave was there, alright.

“… would’ve known. Tragic news travels fast. …would’ve found her.”

“She’s not… would’ve found her.”

“And how come nobody in the continent have heard, hmm? Easy, she’s dead and all of this for nothing.”

Mal got up angrily “… don’t get to disregard Brienne’s life…”

She could hardly hear it. There was only one thought in mind. She was dead, and there wasn’t anything else to do.

“Brienne wouldn’t want us to waste our time with her death. So why delay it?” She barked, easily sizing up short Mal.

“… not dead.” Nia said.

She pointed a wobbly finger at her “You don’t know that, because, flash news, the heart and soul thing is bullshit! She’s dead, she’s not coming back and it’s time we own it.”

Elf boy, who had been awfully quiet, also got up and slammed his large hands in the desk “…so keen on burying her alive… carry on… true friends…”

“Fine!” She blurted out.

Then, she got up and left, hot, angry tears in her eyes.

She walked, and walked, and walked, and walked until her feet gave over, and she threw up the alcohol previously ingested in concerning amounts. Gasping for air, she leaned against what it seemed like solid rock, and allowed her large body to collapse.

When she woke up, she realized that her axes were gone, as well as her coin and part of her armor. Grunting, still with her head throbbing, went to the nearest pub. She could hear “Bloody hell, who wants ale at three? These drunks… Oh wow, that one looks like hell.”

“Hey. I, uh, slept outside last night and my weapons and purse are gone.”

“And what do you want us to do about that, hm, orc?”

She realized, she was far away from home, with next to no money or way to contact her mother or friends. Idiot, she thought.

“A… job would be nice?”

“I’ve enough barmaids, and you ain’t lovely enough to fire the others. Seems like ye can’t cook either, those hands ain’t for the kitchen.”

“I… can fight. I used to be in… Clan Nagoni! Fierce fighters, gave Ventral Tal Kaelen a good shake before going down.”

The barkeeper hummed, looking at her up and down. She probably smelled like vomit, cheap ale and had her clothes ragged and dirty.

“Let’s do one thing, she-orc. If ye take care of a certain customer who won’t pay his beers with a scare, you’re in as our source of entertainment.”

And thus, for the rest of the year, she worked at that bar, fighting all sorts of creatures, always trouncing one after another. And she liked that routine. She drank. Then, she fought, won and drank even more as people sung her praises. Sometimes, she could see glimpses of Nia and Mal, and even elf boy, but the only clear image was of Brienne, her dearest friend, dead on a ditch, with nobody to visit her grave or take her back to the Elements. As she gulped another horn of ale, she wiped with her arm the foam and lunged at the strange beast, ready to take out some anger and take off such grotesque image of a dead Brienne that chased her at night most.

Jaime Reyes (+Khaji) Headcanons ↓

(Unless specified these are all based off Jaime from the 2006 issues)

Everything's under the cut to avoid clutter!

He has birthmarks. So many birthmarks. The most noticable ones are; two over his left brow, one under his bottom lip and another on his right eyelid. He has a lot more but their less prominent in comparison. They all come from Bianca who has just as many but they're in less obvious spots.

He has a bad habit of working in the dark because after so many complaints about the light bill Khaji just gives him night vision. Which has the consequence of others finding him working on essays in the pitch dark like a cryptic. His vision doesn't change much besides a slight green tint that the night vision adopts so he rarely notices the difference until someone points it out.

He gives the suit appendage (?) Fist bumps when they do a good job <3

Watched Naruto religiously as a kid and will drop lore bombs unprompted if anyone mentions the show (Paco is a constant victim)

Adjacent to this he also watched Digimon and prefers it to pokemon (this is mostly out of spite because Milagro would hog the TV to watch reruns and he'd miss his shows).

His hair gets longer after graduation. It just happens while he gets busy with college and this new chapter in life. Khaji suggests it give him a haircut but Jaime decides against it and keeps the hair just below the shoulder.

He and Khaji practice the body swap thing a lot more after life calms down. They don't have a system just yet. Khaji helps Jaime with cooking because despite Bianca trying her best, her son is still a clutz in the kitchen. The furthest Khaji has gone is taking control of their limbs to keep Jaime safe from mundane accidents.

He knows how to speak a little Japanese and German thanks to Khajis' help now! He figures the more he knows the better and practices in his free time.

Khaji burns his flannels at one point and sets a rule that Jaime can only wear flannel twice a week. His fashion sense isn't that great yet but he's trying <3

His taste buds have gotten used to bad foods. Only because of Khaji who's demanded the most atrocious combinations of ingredients during emergencies for the energy and he didn't have a choice but to down them.

Khaji clicks with Brenda a concerning amount and they scare Jaime a bit.

When they do both feel comfortable with taking/giving up control of their body, Khaji makes it a habit of tying up their hair in a half-up half-down style. It also has a habit of using eye make up (a habit it gained when it first landed in Egypt). Khaji replicates the products himself, since the prices are outrageous. + Brenda finds out and considers Khaji her make up dealer.

Since Khaji first fused with him–and since Khaji has made some 'adjustments'–Jaime has a tendency to sleep in weird positions. Face down planking with his arms hanging off the sofa, upper torso hung off the bed, twisted like a pretzel so his back muscles stretch. It scares whoever finds him like that the first time.

Jaime gets called mom a lot by any younger heros/vigilante as a joke (some of them mean it). He'd try rebutting them but he catches himself fretting over them and accepts his fate. (Alberto says he's a lot like Bianca in a lot of ways)

He figures out he's bi only after graduating. He doesn't do much with this information though; just collects a bunch of hero crushes over time. Khaji complains about him not getting laid yet and Milagro tries to set him up with the worst people she can find.

That's it for now! A lot of this is word dump based off of different ideas that have been filling my head for a while now. I hope it's coherent enough! More than willing to keep going if asked just hmu <3

About my concept, I call us:

💫Star children💫

What are we? We are living beings who have acquired or been granted celestial powers (as in from-space celestial not heavenly celestial), and are now considered the symbolic children of the universe and it's different bodies. We embody the universe's different aspects. This usually manifests as a sentient creature gaining other forms that resembles their celestial "parent". We are able to switch back and forth between them at will.

How does it work then? Well, you can either be chosen by a celestial body (like a star or a galaxy, or less specific like a universe in general) or you can hone your abilities and work with spacial energies until you gain a celestial form.

There are different manifestations of star children depending on the individual's original species and their cosmic parent. It also depends on the person's experiences and expectations.

As for me, my celestial parent is the energy of the cosmos and outer space in general.

I have a bunch of forms scripted (some relating to my kintypes), but my main one (Cosmos Nova) is the one I'm striving to achieve rn !! I still have to put together a magical training regime, so if anyone has any tips on that hmu!!

But if I'm a magical girl, what do I fight?

Our kind doesn't have a specific enemy; rather we fight destructive accumulations of despair. We call them "glitches" to generalize, but they manifest as the witches magis fight, the precure's villains-of-the-week, and any other destructive, mindless entity that is causing unnecessary harm. Therefore, we mainly help other mgs with their versions of "glitches".

However, fighting is not our only purpose. Each of us has a goal they want to achieve by becoming a star kid. For example, mine is to grow and learn as much as I can while in this lifetime!

A Musing Monday 🎐

Today i'm thinking about mold, like emotionally. The feeling of moldiness vs feeling nourished and refreshed.

If you've struggled with depression & have worked at allieving it (✋️), you might relate to how unfair it is that many of the things you DO NOT WANT to do while depressed alleviate the depression. 🔀

Depression wants me to isolate, but reaching out and connecting to someone helps. 🫂 Depression doesn't want me to leave bed much less the house, but standing barefoot in my front yard for five minutes eases something in me 🌾☀️. Depression wants me to forsake myself, but damn if everything isn't easier after a long shower and a meal.🧼🍜

It almost feels like depression is a parasitic mold man that doesn't want to be eliminated and has the ability to plant strong 'don't wanna' messages into your gourd 🚫. If you stay alone and miserable the mold can really settle into your body and grow- it even tries convincing you the depresso mold is a dangerous substance like real mold is and that if you go for help you'll just hurt people.

Its so hard to not listen to my scummy little mold man! SO HARD (😏). And he has gremlin powers where if you feed the mold after midnight (or whatever 'past bedtime' is) he gets incredibly worse.

So im celebrating myself (he hates that) and listing some fuck-off-mold-guy activities I've done the past few days 💪

☀️ I made myself a beautiful ratatouille and a plum cookie cobbler

☀️ I asked my partner for back rubs

☀️ I sat in a patch of grass by the road and found a swirly rock

☀️ Watched a goose 🪿

☀️ Opened some windows and curtains and vacuumed

☀️ Redyed my hair (still green lmao 💚)

☀️ Had two friends over to share a meal and bark at Paul Hollywood

☀️ Complimented and flirted with my partner until they blushed and squeaked

☀️ Listened to Carbon Leaf in a hammock with a drink in my hand

☀️ Did paperwork I didnt want to do and then loudly congradulated myself for completing it

Like, I still hate the trend of "Oh you're depressed? You should just __". The use of 'just' is so diminishing, its so dismissive of how hard it is and how individual the depression is. Sure, I have a list of things I did lately that helped me, but im not 'cured', and I know as winter comes itll get harder and Ill need my therapist even more. It can be true at the same time that I've found some things that help me through, make the mold recede, and are worth congradulating myself over. 😊
