Since the start of quarantine, my girlfriend and I have been making meals for each other. Both of our dietary restrictions in addition to cravings have made it challenging to come up with different meals to meet our needs.
âą I have high cholesterol, lactose intolerant, low blood pressure, and low in iron. Also eating beef and pork make me flare up. My philosophy on eating comes from indigenous culture in that we should be eating sustainably, and think seven generations into the future. My philosophy also includes connecting with our cultural roots through food, and learning about someoneâs history through their food.
âą She is lactose intolerant, and cannot handle raw food, greasy/oily food, or overly sweet&salty food. Her philosophy on eating comes from the Japanese and Chinese belief that there should be enough variety, and that you shouldnât overconsume one thing.
âą For our health, we decided to transition into PescatarianïżŒ... by the end Iâm hoping we end up vegetarian or vegan (although my partner is thoroughly convinced she isnât able to fully transition.)
We quickly realized as asian women that:
There isnât enough online representation for asian vegetarian/ vegan food bloggers. As such, the vegan food scene is heavily white-dominated.
There isnât enough discussion on sustainable eating practices that meet dietary needs.
Thereâs lack of intersectionality and too much gatekeeping when it comes to whiteveganism.
Asian vegan food adapted by non-asian foodies lack authenticity and flavour.
So we decided to created a curated list of existing recipes and created our own recipes!
Iâll be posting every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
Motherland Monday
Mondayâs will be dedicated to sharing traditional vietnamese recipes I grew up on, new recipes from Vietnam, and history/stories attached to these recipes.
Where-I-Ate Wednesdays
Wednesdays will be dedicated to listing restaurants Iâve been to locally and overseas that I can openly recommend and why.
Foodie Friday
Fridays will be dedicated to recipes Iâve created without the use of an existing recipe. See how badly I struggle, or see if I succeed.

Not sure why this is tagged #whitevegans? Veganism isnt an enviornmental movement, its solely an ethical philosophy opposing speciesism with a praxis of avoiding all forms of animal exploitation as far as is possible and practicable. Itâs a social justice movement, not a eco one. Definition of veganism below:
Though of course, the environment is very important (since humans and other species rely on it to live and thrive) which is why most vegans also do their best in terms of limiting our impact on it. Luckily a side effect of being vegan is doing the single biggest thing a consumer can do to lower their environmental impact.Â
But sure, also a lot of aspects of being eco friendly (zero waste etc.) can be inaccessable esp for those of us who are poor. Not buying phones first hand is a good thing to do! There are plenty of used phones you can buy which are also much better priced that things like iPhones. The same goes for other electronic products (laptops, tablets, gaming devices etc.) so I def agree that we shouldnt buy new phones if we can avoid doing so. It just has nothing to do with veganism. Also since vegans are on average on the lowest incomes compared to non vegans, I would assume that more vegans of any race (or any gender, age, sexuality etc.) are buying used iphones or no iphones anyway than non vegans anyway.Â
I wonder if the eco girlies would give up or at least limit they iPhones for Mother Earth? đ€
#sure#we shouldnt buy iphones#esp not new ones#but that has nothing to do with the ethical philosophy of veganism#also kinda erasive of a heck load of vegans here#but whatâs new#most vegans I know dont go around buying new iphones#but then most vegans I know are also poor so

Sharing this on point Facebook post with permission from the author, Eshe Kiama Zuri :
Veganism IS NOT white. Veganism is also NOT new and NOT a fad. Whilst *White Veganism* might be newer and non-inclusive, there has been forms of inclusive and intersectional Veganism and non-animal product living and eating habits around for much longer.
We are struggling with a more recent influx in racism, fascism, animal-only and non-intersectional majority whiteveganismâą in a community that should be dedicated towards caring and understanding. I seriously struggle to understand how someone (especially those who become vegan, not born vegan) can open themselves up to the struggles of animals and wish to break down institutions that result in the death or torture of animals and yet completely disregard and even place more hate on fellow humans and feed into and strengthen the systematic oppression of people around them and try to silence and ignore the voice of marginalised people who are also being killed and tortured, whilst claiming to 'be' or 'listen' to the voices of the unheard, but only when they are non-humans.
By ignoring the obvious groups of this that are forming in local communities you are helping them grow and strengthen. And yes this also makes you a racist vegan because unless you are actively turning up to fight when these groups and people like these are trying to take over movements, attacking and abusing people and spreading fascist propaganda then you cannot call yourself anti-racist or anti-fascist and you most definitely are not an intersectional vegan in any way.
Veganism has become popular in the white community very recently with the help of celebrity culture and the internet amongst other things but for veganism to be seen as mostly white is completely wrong and feeds into the racism that is being bred in the white vegan community.
This has been boosted by the appropriation (and bastardisation) of meaningful cultural food and eating practices that were once ridiculed and looked down on, for instance, ital living in Jamaica and other Rasta communities, the understanding of eating without animal products in Hindu and Hare Krishna communities (and across Asia) as well as natural living in many African communities, including Ancient Egypt and pre-colonial West Africa to name a few.
If we search online for vegan recipes I can guarantee you that you will find an abundance of white food bloggers and chefs 'recreating' or 'discovering' food that has been passed down to us in our blood and through ancestral bonds. Curries have become cool and quirky when sold by your local 'enlightened' hippies and no longer the butt of jokes about their smell or Asian culture. Ital food is delicious and fun when it is accompanied by the 'dreadlocked' Ras Trents of the vegan scene and not seen as 'cheap food' or -insert racist joke here- and it goes on.
Whilst the word Vegan is new, the culture of caring about and not eating animals and animal products is not.
Non-white vegans are here and always have been. We have been fighting for animal equality and rights and we have been influencing and nurturing veganism since day. We don't appreciate our culture being taken away from us and repackaged for white consumption. We don't appreciate the lack of support we have from the white vegan community. And we definitely don't stand with the white vegan community if this is what they will allow. And we don't need too, we don't need a whiteapprovedâą sticker on something that we have been doing for a long time and something that comes naturally to us. Whether we choose to use the word vegan or not, we are here and always have been.
To erase this is racist. To ignore this is racist. To choose to support your local culture vultures instead of people making their own cultural food is racism. To allow platforms for anti-human veganism is racism. To pretend that white vegans are a majority is racism. To eat our food without appreciating our culture is racism. And there is so much more. So instead of making us spend the time fighting racism and fascism in communities like this (as we also have to do everywhere in our daily lives), help us. Call it out. Make the animal rights movements and vegan communities a safe space, as it should be.

the #whitevegans got hold of this post pls kill me now
veganism/vegetarianism was always meant to be about
1) fighting against the meat industry's part in climate change
2) protecting poor people who suffer working in slaughterhouses because no one who spends all day killing things in awful conditions is mentally healthy
3) protecting poor people who suffer living near slaughterhouses because the chemicals that come out of those places are seriously damaging to your health
4) protecting native peoples like those in the amazon whose land is being stolen for cattle farming
and finally
5) the ethical raising and killing of animals (because some people will always eat meat humans are ominvores and thats okay but the animals deserve a good life and a good death)
veganism/vegetarianism are not your enemy but the movement has been gentrified and now most people dont have as much access or have been alienated which is complete bullshit and exactly what the meat industry wants
#this is what veganism means to ME#to ME#idc if you dont think this is what it was always about#you're wrong go away
