Do you have any advice on how to take notes? Does it have to be different for university exams and for PG prep? And how do you recommend taking notes from standard textbooks?

Are there any particular textbooks from your undergraduate years that you're always so grateful for reading, something that helps you even now?

And how do you keep yourself motivated? MBBS seems endless sometimes, and the future holds so much uncertainty... This has been making me feel low and unmotivated lately

The field of medicine is always going to be a roller coaster ride. It is okay to feel unmotivated and uncertain. All of us have been/ are going through such phases every now and then, but good news is you will figure it out eventually and things will work out in the end❤️

So about notes taking:

Yes notes taking while preparing for PG is different from the ones while preparing for your mbbs finals, but personally the notes I made during my mbbs days were very helpful for my PG preparation it saved me so much time from rewatching all videos or from buying new guides.

While making notes I read the topic top to bottom once and then I would write down the important points down during second read because I would know the important points to focus on better during the second time and I would make sure that it is as concise as possible and I wouldn't usually note down information that I know very well.

My notes are usually full off tables, flow charts, sticky notes. I use as many colours as possible- all my pens, sticky notes and highlighter are colour coded so that it stays in my photographic memory and I can recall easily!

About the important books that I loved and forever grateful to have read it are:

2. Bailey & Love: surgery

3. Essentials of ophthalmology: by Samar K Basak

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these three books cover to cover!

My advice on keeping ourselves motivated is having the right set of friends who are motivated but not competitive. It is very important to have friends in college who are equally interested in learning just like us and we learn a lot from our friends than from our professors! Never aim for perfection and never be greedy to know it all! As a doctor in the making it is important to be a jack of all trades rather than being the master of one. B open to learning new information always but at the same time it is okay to not know every part of your textbook. Making use of your clinical rtation effectively will guide you to study the most needed syllabuses. While studying don't focus on becoming the topper of your class but rather on knowing the essential information this will help you in the long run.

Take break whenever you feel exhausted and tired- it can be for a few hours or a day or even for a week. Always take adequate mental health breaks and developing a hobby is good for your mental health providing a healthy distractions too!

Remember failure is never the end in medical field it is truly a learning opportunity. Just like the saying two step forward and one step backward is still one step forward!!

These are some of my notes that I took during my second year. I carried forward these notes throughout my mind and kept on adding important points to the same notebook and used it even for my PG prep.

Synopsis 1: Batman and Robin investigate the mystery of a neighbor's cracked safe and the combination for it which was found on a soda pull-tab. Unfortunately, Robin only manages to punch the thief once before he could escape, leaving the Duo without much information to continue the investigation.

The next day, Bruce, Dick and Alfred get going to Bruce's house on the beach as part of their yearly vacation, knowing that it would be the last time they all go together. On their way to the beach, they pick up a young boy, who Bruce decided to help reform as part of a special rehabilitation program.

Upon arriving to the beach, Dick and the young boy meet their neighbors' daughter, Deena, who has a black eye. She invites them to the party at her parents' house. That night, Bruce, Dick and the boy attend the party and they become aware of another crime similar to the previous one in their neighbor's home. Following the clues, the first suspect is the young boy, but Bruce and Dick believe in his innocence and find a trace to the real thief by investigating further.

Using the clues they find, Batman and Dick deduce that the thief is Deena, who has access to the house at all times. Batman rounds up the thugs that used Deena in their crimes and captures them with Dick's help. Once the crime is cleared and the young boy is exonerated, everything returns to normal, except for the fact that the team of Batman and Robin is bound to separate.

Synopsis 2: Continuing from last issue… Barbara Gordon and Jason Bard stumble upon a the suspect of a mugging/murder involving a basketball player named Topper while on a date as Topper. As Batgirl, she and Bard find that the evidence proving Topper is guilty is possibly in his locker, the two are determined to find a way to break their date in order to investigate further. Bard breaks off the date feigning a headache and pretends to leave in a cab, while Barbara switches back to Batgirl and hides in a locker, Bard soon returns to the locker room and hides in one of the shower stalls.

After the game, Topper is informed by his goons about their previous confrontation with Bard and Batgirl. Topper then returns to his locker room where he is attacked by Batgirl, who he easily defeats. Bard is unable to stop him because his lame knee ends up giving out. Topper reveals that what he stole from the person he murdered was a book of information on the cities numbers rackets.

When debating what to do with Batgirl, Bard arrives to save the day, but slips and topples on the crooks, giving Batgirl the distraction she needs to get free and defeat them herself. The two commend each other for their teamwork after the crooks are turned over to police.

CD VINYL COLLECTION — the sleeves are not kept in some pristine, collector’s condition. they’re well-loved and well-used. the artwork on the covers are dull and fading. the spines eroded by the natural oil of hands, by the routine bending that softens the cardboard. the records themselves may have a stray light scratch or three, none so terribly damaging that the sound quality is completely compromised, but it is waning for a majority of them due to time. they sit on the bottom shelf of one of the main room tables, tucked right below the west-facing window, just under the simple and sleek Lenco GL75 perched proudly on top. 

the collection boasts the staples of modern music’s foundations, chart toppers ranging from his years in high school, throughout his time in college and seminary, and into his mid-30s : 

first there’s the classic outlaw country, a small portion of the choices but among his favorites — your Johnny Cash, your Marty Robbins, and yes even some Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton ( she’s not “outlaw country”, but who doesn’t love Dolly, you know? ).  

John was in his high school and college jazz bands as a clarinet player ( his family was never all that into it, so he gained a better appreciation for it through his band classes ). thus, jazz music is another small but staple genre displayed on the shelf — Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, and of course, Louis Armstrong can all be found.

next is the sizable portion of motown and rhythm & blues records — The Temptations, The Jackson 5, Four Tops, The Miracles, The Drifters, Diana Ross, and a whole lot of Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

there are the few stray classic pop albums and artists — Dion DiMucci, The Four Seasons, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. you also might notice a couple albums by The Monkees snuck in there.

a few folk artists can also be found — John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot, most notably.

making up the final and largest genre selection of the accrual are the classic & blues rock vinyls — your Elvis Presley, your Dion DiMucci, your Buddy Holly. you’ll be spoiled for choice if you’re looking for Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, or Fleetwood Mac. Don McLean, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, The Animals, The Hollies, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Jim Croce, The Rolling Stones and even Lynyrd Skynyrd are all featured. if you file through them long enough, you’ll eventually come across a signed copy of Led Zeppelin IV. 

and keeping in the spirit of Crockett Island’s culture, and John’s religious upbringing / lifestyle, there’s plenty of Neil Diamond records to choose from ( why, one is on the turntable right now, patiently waiting for the arm to drop again ). 

if you grew up on Crockett and have a working ears, and you just so happen to pass by the rectory while the priest is making dinner for himself? then yes, you’ve probably heard him singing along to any of these at the top of his lungs in the privacy of his home.

Top 5 Stephen Sondheim Musicals

Earlier this week, musical theatre - and, indeed, one could argue, theatre and even film, in general - lost one of its most brightly shining stars: Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim was the composer, writer, and lyricist of some of the most famous and highly-regarded musicals in the world, with various concerts, revues, and general tributes to his name throughout his long lifetime. From movies like “Dick Tracy” and “The Seven Per-Cent-Solution,” to TV shows like “Topper,” to creating music for non-musical theatrical productions, including some Shakespeare plays, his career was varied and vibrant. The people and friends he worked with were and often still are among the most celebrated stage and even screen performers ever known, and while the man has passed on, his legacy is unlikely to be forgotten.

For a long time, I’ve wanted to do my own tribute to Sondheim, and now seems as good a time as any to do it. In honor of this great creative genius, the maker of some of my favorite pieces of show music, I’ve decided to create a quick list of my favorites of his stage shows...all of which, incidentally, have been adapted to film or recorded for television more than once. Whatever you think of these recordings and adaptations, the power of the source materials can never be understated. So, without further ado, here are My Top 5 Favorite Stephen Sondheim Musicals. 

5. A Little Night Music.

Many consider this show to be Sondheim’s singular masterpiece. To a certain degree, one could easily argue that it is. Some of the most complex and humanly powerful tunes in the Sondheim songbook are to be found in this play, and the story - adapted from the novel “Smiles of a Summer Night” - mixes a potent blend of legitimate drama and absurd, sometimes dark comedy, which was always one of Sondheim’s greatest traits. The attention to period detail in the lyrics and story, as well, and the themes the music and script cover, are both surreal and domestic, leading to a strange but fascinating piece of theater that at times feels more operatic than your typical musical venture. “A Little Night Music” is a story set in Edwardian England, and covers the many misadventures of a VERY dysfunctional couple of families. While out for a weekend at a country resort, the many conflicts within the two families end up taking the forefront, sometimes with humorous and other times heart-wrenching results. It’s a bloody good show, but I have to admit, I tend to listen to and get more excited about other Sondheim works more, which is why this one ranks so low: it’s brilliant, but I like others more. Plain and simple.

Favorite Songs: “Send in the Clowns,” “You Must Meet My Wife,” and “Every Day a Little Death.” 4. West Side Story.

I debated whether or not this one should really rank above “A Little Night Music” or not, mostly because while this IS a Sondheim musical, it’s only a Sondheim musical in the sense that Sondheim was the lyricist of the show. This contemporary reimagining of Romeo & Juliet - set in New York during the 1950s, with the feuding families reimagined as a couple of rival street gangs - was composed by Leonard Bernstein (a genius in his own right), and is probably best known for its dance sequences, which were originally choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins (who also directed the original production of the show). In other words, Sondheim’s contributions are somewhat more unsung: he wasn’t in COMPLETE control here, and as this was actually one of his earliest contributions to popular musical theatre, he was still refining his craft to a certain degree. However, the reason I ranked this one higher than “A Little Night Music” in the end is simple: I just like this show more than Night Music! I listen to it more often, reference it more often, and I think that Sondheim’s lyrics are a big part of what makes it special. To me, West Side Story is an example of the brilliance of theatrical collaboration: no, Sondheim is not the ONLY reason this show is great, but it’s the combination of his witty, sharp, and illustrative lyrics, Bernstein’s smooth and spicy composition, and the elaborate choreography that Robbins originated, that makes the overall piece so powerful. Take any one of them away, and West Side Story just wouldn’t be as special as it truly is.

Favorite Songs: “America,” “Gee Officer Krupke,” and “Tonight.”

3. Gypsy.

While “West Side Story” was the show that put Sondheim on the map, I think most would agree it was “Gypsy” that truly cemented him as a musical mastermind. Once again, Sondheim is not the SOLE person to credit for the power of the piece: he’s only the lyricist here, yet again. It wouldn’t be till his next big work, “A Funny Thing Happned on the Way to the Forum” (which is also really good, but not QUITE great enough to make my personal Top 5), that he would try composing as well as writing the lyrics for the first official time. The composer of this story is Jule Styne, another musical legend whom I personally know best for his contributions to “Peter Pan” and the soundtrack of “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.” This play, however, was a very different beast for Styne, and it’s really Sondheim’s lyrics and the power of the show’s story that makes it so renowned: Gypsy tells the story of “Mama Rose” Hovick, the mother of the infamous striptease entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee. Inspired by Lee’s published memoirs, the play tells the story of Hovick’s maddening attempts to seek fame and fortune through her offspring; the story of possibly the most infamous “stage mother” history has ever detailed. By taking Mama Rose’s point of view of the story, however, the viewers get a unique insight into the world of show biz, and into the kinds of demons that make or break people, as we’re left to try and figure out just who and what Mama Rose really is. Victim or villain? An overambitious greed-monger, or a confused and desperate parent? A strong woman trying to live the American dream, or a disillusioned nutball who refuses to wake up to reality? It’s telling that different productions of Gypsy have actually given the story different endings, even though the rest of the play remains completely intact each time, each different interpretation allowing us to take away a totally different moral lesson or get a different perspective of the kind of story Mama Rose and her soon-to-be-world-famous daughter have to tell. The character of Mama Rose has become one of the most sought-after female roles in theatre, not just in musicals, having been played by such names as Ethel Merman, Bette Midler, Patti Lupone, and Angela Lansbury, just to name a few. If West Side Story was the stepping stone for the Rise of the Empire of Sondheim, then Gypsy is almost undeniably the cornerstone of the Imperial Palace.

Favorite Songs: “Rose’s Turn,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” and “You’ll Never Get Away From Me.”

2. Into the Woods.

It may seem odd to some for me to place “Into the Woods” so high in my ranks; many musical theatre fans and critics have argued this to actually be one of Sondheim’s weaker works, largely due to its remarkable tonal shift halfway through. The first act is largely a humorous farce, with some smatterings of dark comedy strewn throughout and a heavily satirical side...and the second act is essentially the opposite: a dark and surprisingly brutal tragicomedy with only a few speckles of light to keep it from being too oppressively gloomy. It literally feels almost like two different shows, when you watch the whole thing through all the way, in most productions, including the original! I will concede this is a problem, but...I’m sorry, maybe it’s just my bias towards this kind of story in general, or my personal history with the play, but I just LOVE “Into the Woods.” An exploration into the darker side of Grimm’s Fairy-Tales with a comical edge, the story mixes several of the famous fables we all know and love into a bittersweet story of love and lust, good and evil, moral uncertainty, and the relationships between parents and their children. Above all the other themes in this play, one stands most prominent: in the words of a venerable axiom, “Be careful what you wish for: you just might get it.” At the end of the first act of the story, the fairy-tales play out basically the way they should, with everything apparently ending Happily Ever After. However, in the second act, reality comes (quite literally) crashing onto the scene, as the choices and desires of the cast in the first act now show their at times disturbing consequences in the second. For all the tonal inconsistencies, I think it’s the power of the second act’s shadows that allows the lightness of the first act to shine even brighter: taken apart, something about the story feels sort of incomplete without one side or the other. So, for any faults one might have, I will always appreciate this wonderful reimagining of classic fantasy.

Favorite Songs: “Hello Little Girl,” “The Last Midnight,” and “Giants in the Sky.”

As much as I adore “Into the Woods,” however, there is one Sondheim musical I like even more...and if you know me well, it won’t be any surprise which one it is...

1. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Most people, as I said before, seem to consider “A Little Night Music” to be Sondheim’s masterpiece. I must politely disagree: “Night Music” is amazing, make no mistake, but in my opinion, “Sweeney Todd” is not only my favorite Sondheim musical, but in my opinion it’s also his best. It’s almost certainly his darkest: while black comedy is a constant theme throughout virtually all of Sondheim’s works, this show is unique for being one of the earliest outright horror musicals in the genre, and I would argue is also still one of the best. While darkly humorous, the show is not even remotely bittersweet: simply bitter, plain and simple. In unashamedly drenches itself in its own melodramatic darkness in such a way that you almost forget this is the work of the same man who made such tunes as “I Feel Pretty” and “Comedy Tonight.” Everyone in this play, almost, has some sort of dark side to their character, making it hard at times to tell who to cheer for and who to fear most. Despite its Gothic atmosphere, it is never a simple “spook show,” containing some of the most bleak and unsettling themes and motifs of any Sondheim story, some more subtly handled than others. The musical tells a tale of revenge, primarily, as a deranged barber - after escaping from prison in Australia and returning to London in the days of Victoriana - seeks to avenge his ruined life and the apparent death of his beloved bride. Over the course of the story, Sweeney Todd grows increasingly more demented, as his collaboration with a cannibal pie maker and encounters with con artists, corrupt authority figures, and his own psychological troubles increasingly wear down his fragile moral structure, transforming the man into a monster just as black and terrible as any of the other evil figures in the story. Ultimately, it is a warning about the dangers of seeking vengeance: you can become the very nastiness you seek to destroy, and after a certain point, redemption just isn’t possible. Just like “Night Music,” this show rides a fine line between typical musical theatre play and something more akin to an opera...in fact, many opera companies have included productions of Sweeney Todd as part of their regular catalogue! Whenever I think of Sondheim, it’s the boldness of this haunting thriller that I think of first. For that reason above all else, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” takes the cake as My Favorite Sondheim Musical. 

Favorite Songs: Oddly, my favorite songs here are the last three songs of the first act, and the order in which they occur is my order of favoritism from greatest to least: “Pretty Women,” “Epiphany,” and “A Little Priest.”

SUMMARY Colin Childress (Jeffrey Combs), a highly successful comic book artist who gains inspiration from a mystical book of horrific drawings, inadvertently summons an evil spirit into his basement studio. Decades later, his house has become a small art institute run by the stern Mrs. Briggs (Yvonne De Carlo). One night, comely student Whitney Taylor (Debrah Farentino) goes rooting around the sealed boxes in the cellar and releases the supernatural forces trapped there.

PRODUCTION CELLAR DWELLER was shot at Empire’s Italian studios, it was produced by Bob Wynn. Sergio Salvati was the cinematographer, According to Albert Band, head of production for Empire, the film was cast with video actors to spur cassette sales. The cast includes Pamela Bellwood, Deborah Mullowney (Debrah Farentino), Vince Edwards and Yvonne De Carlo. The film is a  homage to the horror stories of the old EC comics. The story revolves around a female art student who so admires the old comic book that She seeks out the home of the artist to study there. The creator of the comic book died 30 years before under mysterious circumstances involved with black magic. He had drawn peils in his strips from which a hideous creature eventually materialized and it is still around and still hungry. De Carlo plays a character who eventually turns into the creature.

The script, written by Don Mancini, had been around Empire for years. Buechler had prepared some early pre-production art concepts for it before making TROLL for Empire in 1985. Once he accepted Empire topper Charles Band’s offer to direct the film he went through six re-writes of the script.

The challenge of trying to make a movie with decent acting, a good Story, and some fine FX in an amount of time considerably less than what the average filmmaker is allotted these days appealed to Buechler. Buechler even sped things ahead by shooting with two cameras simultaneously, thus ensuring better coverage and production value.

One of the reasons Buechler sails through projects like Cellar Dweller the way he does, and the principal reason he found the time to make the film in the first place, is that he hired a dynamite team to back him up.

I’ve got the best crew in the world,” Buechler boasts. “We’re in the business of making monsters for the motion picture screen that are believable, and one of the reasons we do it well is because everyone has the opportunity to follow a character through its various stages of development. When you take an assembly line approach to this sort of work, you often sacrifice momentum and spontaneity.”

John Criswell, MMI’s shop foreman in charge of all things mechanical, likens working at MMI with being in “a big clubhouse. That’s what the atmosphere is like. You have a real good opportunity to try many different things, and I get to travel a lot.” Still, Criswell has nothing on his boss, who seems to be continuously jet-hopping from location to location, back and forth, successfully juggling four or five jobs at a time.

“As time goes on,” notes Buechler, “I have to delegate a great deal of work because there’s just so much coming in. Most of the time I sculpt 90 percent of what’s happening here.

“We changed the monster into a more Lovecraftian creature,” said Buechler. “The creature now has more personality, he’s more a character. We also dropped a number of other fantasy characters that did nothing to further the story.”

Buechler, a former comic strip artist before starting his effects company, Mechanical & Makeup Imageries (MMI), admitted being a fan of the old EC Comics. The comics in the film are used as an integral part of its structure.

Buechler called the film’s titular creature “a cross between a werewolf and a vampire.” Buechler’s design was mechanized by John Criswell and worn by Michael Deak during filming. The script also called for one character to lose an arm, and for a zombie that enlivens the film’s climax. “nothing too complicated.” according to MMI staffers.

Buechler downplays the film’s gore angle. “I’ve never done a slasher picture and I never wanna do one,” he said. “I think that it vou do something graphic it should explore psychological terror or deal with fantasy. It should not be a gratuitous exploitation of murder.”

“Mike’s a tall guy,” notes Buechler. “He’s probably about 6-foot-4. In the movie, wearing the suit with the mechanical head, and because of the way we photographed him, he looks more like 8-foot.”

John Foster, now production manager at MMI, was at the time responsible for the understructure of the costume worn by Deak. The Comic book scenes have been intercut with live action for the most graphic gore scenes in order to get an anticipated R-Rating when the picture is submitted to the MPAA. The strips were drawn at MMI by Foster, under Buechler’s supervision. The covers and additional interior art by famed artist Frank Brunner.

I don't want to say i had a Christmas breakdown, but at the same time if i had to describe my day

So i realised i haven't listened to Christmas music yet, so i put some on, then i looked at my flat with no decorations, and i just couldn't take it any more, like i said, it wasn't but it was a Christmas breakdown. So i went to 2 different shops, got a tree and a bunch of decorations!

I GOT A GOLDEN TRICERATOPS! :'3 A cute lil train, lots of Mickey/Minnie decorations, a rodent looking bristly polar bear carrying a tree and presents, a space cat sitting on a planet, an ugly Christmas jumper, a backpack, a glowing snowman, a silver robbin in a cage, chonky gold stars, and a tree topper!

Not the exact tree i wanted, but it worked, real trees were being sold less than £10 and i have always wanted a real tree, but eh. The lady at Asda, while at the self checkout she was literally nosing through my bag, commenting on the decorations i bought, then told me it's a huge waste for 1 day! Couldn't believe the cheek! She's just mad that SHE didn't get A GOLDEN TRICERATOPS!
