A bit less than eight years ago, I created a simple Word document to list my favorite fanfiction, so that if I wanted to reread something I could easily find it again. Five years ago today, I uploaded it as a proper multifandom rec list, having realized how huge the scale of it had gotten and its potential as more than just a reference for my own use. And now, it’s time for the semiannual public version update once again, bringing the uploaded file up-to-date with my continuously-updated personal copy.

With this expansion, the list goes from 2,440 to 2,578 total fics, from 118 to 122 fandoms represented, and from ~49.6 million to over 53.4 million words. (There’s a stats section that goes into more detail on such things at the end of the list document, if you’re interested.)

So I was tagged over a month ago but I only now have the motivation to do it, I counted most recent as most recently posted (possibly because there's another tag game specifically for wips I'm doing right after this)

1. Ritsuka opens the sliding door to see Proto!Cu sitting on the balcony, overseeing the lush garden. The moon was high in the sky and stars winking down at them, uncovering a breathtaking atmosphere. (Fate/GO, Proto!Cu/Ritsuka, gift fic, smut, here)

do you have any khanpella (or just pathologic in general) fanfiction reccomendations?

yes I do :)) Basically in the order of when I read them. All are rated gen or teen+. My comments might get spoiler-y but I try to stay unspecific. All of these are post-canon. Thank you for asking anon!!

“Khan and Capella are called to protect the first blossoming changes to the Town-on-Gorkhon, and rise to the challenge, as always, together.“

This one is one of my favorites and I’ve read it over plenty of times. I love Khan’s loneliness, his feelings about growing up between the new order of his sister and Capella, and just the subdued state of their relationship is really moody and interesting. Also poses an interesting mode of thinking: what would Capella be like once she’s a Mistress? How would they negotiate that with their romantic relationship? 

+Basically any Patho fic by this author is good!

2. what do you know? i'm just a bad believer by ghostlyeris 

“Notkin once asked him how he could tell the difference, three drinks into their routine. Every word fell flat as he tried to explain. There was just a difference between Victoria Olgimskaya Jr.—a woman trying desperately to live up to the lofty shadow her mother had cast, all while taking over for both her father and brother—and Capella, who wanted to be a child just a little bit longer. The same way there was a difference between Khan—former leader of the Dogheads now enforcing the law of the town—and Kaspar, balancing on the edge of adolescence and adulthood as long as he could. 

—What happens when you put two children in charge of rebuilding an entire culture from the edge of ruin? Nothing good for their health.”

Inspired by the 1st, another timeskip fic that follows the same idea of Capella being different to the White Mistress, and she and Khan negotiating that. Another nice, moody piece where they struggle to fulfill the roles they put on themselves in the Town. 

3. now i'm someone else by courierseis 

“a quiet moment in the new kain estate. khan tries to do something nice, but it doesn't go quite right.”

This one’s just short and cute, and I love it a ton. It’s post-canon but more pre-relationship. I like the focus on Capella’s POV and how it explores the tension and agreement to start being allies instead of enemies from her angle, and the vulnerability that requires from her.

4. Patholoveathon 2020, Ch. 2: My Will, Not All the World by ERNest 

“Aiming rocks at bottles, they hit on the truth.”

This one is a microsecond but I like the play of Victor’s quote about Khan/Capella, the playfulness, and how they’re already discussing power and how their families have influenced them in the relationship even in such a childish context. IDK it really suits them.

5. Ephemera by  SquirrellyThief (rating: Gen)

“Ephemera /əˈfem(ə)rə/ noun: something of no lasting significance. Capella and Khan wait out a storm with no one but each other for company. (Set after the Diurnal Ending for Patho 2)“

Hi @squirrellythief I’m gonna expound upon my love for this:

I love this one for being, like that one commenter said, a sort of Marble Nest for Capella (which feels confirmed by the ending). It being from Capella’s POV lets it show all her self-doubts and fears, which she has a lot of! Addressing the loss of the Town’s kids, and her issues with vulnerability around Khan when he just seems so ready to throw everything away for her is wonderful, and it’s nice to see how they try to comfort each other, and the asymmetry between how Khan feels about Capella and vice versa. And how Capella figures out through a future vision how Khan might actually feel about her in the present... There’s something very beautiful about that... very Arrival 2016 about that...

In the early morning, despite Edelgard's desire to do nothing but lounge around, Claude receives a letter. He stiffens, almost imperceptibly, and then laughs, that falsely casual laugh that she had so hated when they’d first met. She’d seen it as dangerous, arrogant, before she’d come to know him. Now she sees it for what it is, his coping mechanism for keeping himself together. She knows because she has her own coping mechanism, how her fists tighten, her countenance gets colder, her nails dig into her palms. He’s come to recognize that mood in her too. If she’d told her younger self that she’d understand Claude this intimately, she thinks that young girl would have never believed her.

Kind of a sequel to my other longfic, if we had met later, a few years after Three Hopes's war ends! It was supposed to be much longer but time got ahead of me and I never quite got to finish, alas.

I- set out to make another fanart for your story. And I somehow went into brainrot hell and appeared on the other side with whatever the hell this is. I’m blaming this picture of 12th Night with Anne Hathaway. My initial plan was to have an angsty bedside style illustration of Ashitaka watching over Link as he recovers from his injury’s on the mountain…

And then Sidon showed up and I somehow found myself here…

I feel bad because this is so far removed from the fic at this point. But I feel like this may be the only group of readers who would kind of understand my insanity at this point XD

hmm, I was talking about Stakh earlier, so... it’s Andrey time!

I have to say, it’s an unusual thing for me, because I tend to strongly dislike this kind of arrogant, larger-than-life characters... but Andrey grew on me. Perhaps because I don’t get the feeling that it’s a pose, that he’s using that bravado as a mean to hide his insecurity or his vulnerability, as it is often done. But no, he’s just... like that, like a force of nature. In the town where everyone has some grand plans and 18 hidden agendas, Andrey just wants for buildings to go up and for people to go down. Or to go down on people. I can respect that.

besides, his love and care for Petr is very touching. Also I’d love to see his living quarters; where does he even sleep? Is it as messy as Petr’s place?

Also, he absolutely rocks that outfit

✨  what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?

it’s about the disempowerment. the struggle against the impossible odds despite knowing, that your actions matter very little - but you have to try nontheless.

Existential dread aside, what draws me is just right mix of the familiar and the strange - Patho 2 absolutely nails the aesthetics, and I love every nook and cranny of this weird little town

(one of the reasons P1 doesn’t vibe with me as strongly is that its aesthetics are at the same time too familiar and too strange - that early 2000 goth vibe is something i remember seeing on the streets and in the magazines, so all the wierd shit creates much greater dissonance... if that makes any sense)

not exactly a trivia, but sth I’ve only noticed on my last playthrough a few weeks ago - there’s a treehouse behind the Nutshell with the IPL iconic doll keeping watch

3. What do you order at a café?          Tea or Bellini when I feel fancy. Coffee when I am too poor to order anything else :smiling_face_with_tear:

6. What does your dream home look like?          Very small and crammed with all sort of pretty things! I imagine it to be decorated in light colours in Biedermeier style (atrocious, I know) with lots of wooden furniture and parquet, and with large windows and a place like a balcony where to have tea on the outside during the good season. There are plants in every room and fresh flowers in the study every day! And because it is a dream home, it is always tidy and pretty! hehe

11. What character archetype or trope is your favourite?          The devil/jester and the tragic hero and if these weren't real archetypes they are now.

18. Chai tea or hot chocolate?          Maybe unfair, but I'll go for hot chocolate because there's a cafe in my father's hometown that makes the best hot chocolate with sweet liqueur (that reminds me of nice memories with my relatives, festive days and winter of my childhood).

Stakh Rubin?

First impression:    “Wow, you’re HUGE!”

Impression now:    If I must be entirely honest, I don’t care too much about Stakh. Still, I find the depth of his character interesting, especially for what it concerns his relationship with his late mentor and his idea of duty. The developement of his path in Pathologic 2 is simply amazing. Curious to see more of him in the Changeling route.

Favorite moment:    The one-sided dialogue between Artemij and one exhausted Stakh. Very good moment. Also the only moment I can think about right now.

Idea for a story:    Uncle Stakh moment. A lazy afternoon. Jam and bread. Tea. A quiet presence for Murky to tolerate, a lot of interesting medical informations for Sticky to ask for. Everything’s fine.

Unpopular opinion:    mmm, don’t have any.

Favorite relationship:    The Basket Gang. Friendship is nice :)

Favorite headcanon:    Colourblind Rubin.
