Television producer Norman Lear died today, which prompted me to put into words something I've had rattling around in my head for a long time now. I grew up in a very Republican family in the 70s-- communism = bad, welfare = bad, everyone but white people = lazy, hippies = bad, non-European immigrants = bad, you don't deserve anything if you can't work for it, etc. etc. I've often wondered how my sister and I turned far away from those views and became the bleeding heart liberals we are (and brought our mother along with us, thankfully). In an extended family that moved into crackpot conspiracy theory Reaganism (later, Trumpism) and/or morally bankrupt "libertarianism," we are the only ones who have moved farther to the left as they've moved farther right.
Speaking for myself (can't speak for my sis!), I can think of quite a few experiences I've had combined with a natural curiosity and sense of fairness but I've always felt like Norman Lear shows played some important, invisible part in this process.
My family watched All In The Family, Sanford and Son, Maude, the Jeffersons, and One Day At a Time religiously. Surrounded by conservative white people in the small, rural logging towns we lived in and in my own family, these shows were the main exposure I had to people who lived very different lives than my own: urban, multigenerational households, single women and single mothers, people of different races, different social classes, and so on. Just seeing someone live in an apartment in a city felt almost like seeing aliens on another planet!
On these shows I saw the kinds of people who were routinely referred to as "problems" or mentioned disparagingly in my little world, portrayed as interesting, full people with feelings and problems that from my sheltered perspective seemed strange and exotic but also, very human. They were cranky or funny or goofy or sassy, but all the characters on these shows were fun to watch and their struggles placed me in the midst of a world I knew reflected how people elsewhere must live. It allowed me to imagine myself as a person living in a world filled with racial, class, gender, and political diversity that was very different from how such a world was portrayed in my Cold War Era conservative family.
How would I live in that kind of world? What kind of person would, or should, I be? Definitely not one like Archie Bunker.
All In The Family probably had the most influence. My grandfather adored Archie Bunker because, as the family joke went, they were basically the same person. By allowing me to see our family patriarch in this awful character who cannot accept how the world is changing, it gave me the critical distance to see myself as part of that changing world. I definitely know that this show also gave me my first inkling of what patriarchy was, though it would be a long time before I knew that word.
I was embarrassed to watch Sanford and Son with my grandpa because he watched it like he probably watched old timey minstrel shows back in the day: Sanford was an object of ridicule, entertaining because my grandpa could scorn him. Though it was obvious to everyone in my family but him, Sanford and Archie were similar characters and it was clear he loved the white one and looked down on the Black one solely because of their race. I remember him also refusing to even watch The Jeffersons, as if the existence of a Black man wealthier than him (he was a plumber) was a sheer impossibility. It's kind of funny how much he hated George Jefferson.
Then there was Maude and One Day At A Time. In my world, where women were primarily housewives, married mothers, still living a 1950s version of femininity, these shows were truly formative for me. I've always held, and still hold, Maude as a kind of role model for an older woman (even though she couldn't have been nearly as old as she seemed to me at the time). She was the only feminst I "knew!" She made feminism look so cool and I knew I was a feminist. Divorce was still kind of exotic and scary back then-- I didn't know anyone in a divorced family and certainly knew no single mothers. One Day At A Time normalized the single mom family just at a time when women were becoming more independent, and I thought about the show often, many years later, when I got divorced and became a single mom myself.
I wouldn't go so far as to say Norman Lear's shows made me turn out as I am. But they did offer a liberal interpretation of the changing world I was living in, and gave me the space to imagine possibilities, relationships, and ways of being in the world that were simply not present or actively despised in my everyday surroundings.
Maybe these TV shows created a little empathetic space that grew as I continued to engage with new people, places, and ideas throughout adolescence until there was no room left for the stinginess, bigotry, cruelty, and paranoia of Republicans.

Is anyone willing to make an edit on the Rain world wiki for me? I'd do it myself but I don't want to share my IP address or make an account; it's the Italian translation of the Ashy Green pearl

$(function(){ var box = '.tucaja'; $.get('/u'+_userdata.user_id, function( data ) { var links = $(data).find('.pscontact a'); $(box).append(links); }); });
$(function(){ var box = '.tucaja'; var imagen = '/1/111.png'; $.get('/u'+_userdata.user_id, function( data ) { var ficha = $(data).find('.pscontact a img[src*='+imagen+'"]').parents('a'); $(box).append(ficha); }); });
Y tu HTML en el template de profile_view_body:
<div class="pscontact"> <!-- BEGIN contact_field --> {contact_field.CONTENT} <!-- END contact_field --> </div>
¡Saludos!

Everyday Drabbles #1076: Betrothal
When the king offered the princess’s hand to anyone who could prove his worth she was furious. All of her training to make an advantageous political match had been wasted. The crowd vying for the engagement quickly grew to the hundreds thanks word of her beauty, wit, and charm. She had to do something. Disguising herself as a boy, she moved among the social climbers, ‘heroes,’ and gadabout noblemen, taking their stock. She devised some tests of her own to winnow them down. The princess had plans of her own, and she’d need an accomplice as much as a husband.

Entry 3: Exploration of a negative situation of a sports venue
When I think of negative situations that have occurred at sport venues my attention goes straight to the Hillsborough disaster. It took place on April 15, 1989, at Hillsborough Stadium Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, and is widely known as the fatal human crush (Day, 2019). The unforgettable tragedy happened during a FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham in the first five minutes of the game. A disturbing 96 people who were all Liverpool fans died which included men, women and children and hundreds were injured (Scraton, 2013). Historically, it has been considered the deadliest stadium disaster (Gopalan, 2020).
Tumblr media
Image source: memorial of people who died in the disaster
In order to prevent hooliganism, fans of both teams entered the stadium through opposite sides as there were more than 53,000 fans expected (Tikkanen, 2023). There were 24,000 Liverpool fans ordered to enter only through one entrance, Leppings Lane (Tikkanen, 2023). With 10,000 people of those fans having tickets for the standing terraces only able to enter through 7 turnstiles (Tikkanen, 2023). With 15 minutes until kickoff there were still more than 4,000 fans needing to enter through the turnstiles. A decision was then made to open another gate which saw another 2,000 enter through to the already full standing terraces (Day, 2019). The barrier broke in terrace three which then created the crush as people kept falling forward which applied extra pressure on the people at the front. Some fans escaped by climbing the fence at the front of the terrace (Day, 2019).
Tumblr media
Image source: barriers that broke during the crush
All these facts and issues have been examined thoroughly and the findings of the disaster were unfortunate. Firstly, the people who died from the disaster were considered ‘unlawfully killed’ by the jury's verdict (Dickie, 2018).  Although crowd management on the day of the event wasnt considered the immediate cause of the incident it is obvious with the facts above that it was poorly handled and should be considered a serious issue (Dickie, 2018). According to the ‘Guide to Safety at Sports grounds’ also referred to as the Green Guide which was applicable at the time of the disaster shows how the layout, design and construction of the venues terrace stand 3 and 4 were found not fully compliant with the guide (Sports Grounds Safety Authority (Great Britain, 2018). For example, based on the Green Guide, the height of the barrier in the two terraces did not meet protocol, and crowd capacity exceeded (Dickie, 2018).  Another venue misjudgement was having no ambulances on sight. The disaster wasn't declared a major incident until 3.22pm, which was too late, and ambulance control was not informed of the severity of the crisis (Conn, 2014). Therefore, only one ambulance was on the pitch at 3:14pm. If the incident was reported a lot earlier, it's undeniably that more people would have survived.

Molto bene, a dirla tutta.
Frey sa andare in bici.
«So esserlo.»

I think the biggest egg-on-face red flag is, American Slavery wasn't even close to being solved until 1865, however everyone not communists (seemingly) would tell you that USA is Land Of De free since 1776. Not only was that a big ol' lie, but it was a big ol' lie that hamstrung the abolitionists at every turn. It is like how so many socialist countries fizzled and died partially because "Socialism Is good therefore any reform is basically satanic." How could ANY land be land of the free opportunity, when half of it has chattel slavery? The slaves need not even be physically abused as such, just the fact that they lack all political rights by definition, was enough. "Whiteys" went to war over No Taxation w/o Representation FCS and they were never whipped.
Developing a deep antipathy for the way people go 'slavery in the antebellum USA was uniquely bad! Don't you know in the classical world masters were expected to take care of their slaves? People could even be given their freedom!"
Like I can see the game of telephone from a valid point to the popular discourse but, like, I feel like I should go start a fight to defend the memory of people who died in Roman mines here.

Mouse and Ram, authors of Beau Ideals
Merchants stare up and out, some advertising their goods, yelling, others perched, confident that the outward quality of their wares is enough to draw customers in: rubble arranged on tables, mageware scattered in between with display lights illuminating milky crystals; the fruit of their ventures into the Expanse, the hope that it was worth their sacrifice. It all passes in a blur and I feel the press of time. One of these items will be worth the risk of stealing. It will be my last act as a free citizen before disappearing into the Southern Expanse.
A low-level criminal on the run for the crime of the century, the end of your journey approaches as you arrive in Lau Lyssa, the Kingdom’s southernmost city. Resigned to your fate of living as a fugitive in the wilds of the Southern Expanse, you know you only have so much time before word of your misdeed sweeps the land.

Note
Hi! I'm using your super cool Discord theme (v2) on a sideblog of mine. Is it possible to separate the custom links into categories (similar to how you can group text channels, if you know what I mean)? Thank you for your hard work!
hmm well it wouldn't be possible with the links as they are right now, unfortunately :( tumblr pages don't allow for grouping of links right now...
that being said.... if you're comfortable with editing the theme code itself, then yes, I could give you template code to fill in! the only limitation would be that you'd have to go and edit the HTML every time you wanted to change/add a link
template code and instructions under the cut. as always, if they're confusing or something isn't working right, feel free to DM me and we can figure out fixes
usage instructions
go to your Customize page
find the Edit HTML section, then ctrl+f to the {block:HasPages}...{/block:HasPages} part
delete that entire part. make sure you don't delete anything around it, like the Description block or the </div> tag!
replace it with the code from the "template code: HTML/JS" section below
go back to the main Customize menu and find the Advanced Options section
in the Add Custom CSS box, add the code from the "template code: CSS" section below
go back to the HTML and add links/sections - links can be added by copying over a single <a href="YOURLINK">...</a> tag. place it inside one of your <div class="category">...</div> tags - categories can be added by copying over one <span class="catlabel">...</span> and one <div class="category>...</div>, immediately after each other
for more specific instructions and a breakdown of the links/categories code, go to the "more specific guide" section at the bottom of this post
template code
HTML/JS
<nav id="channels"> <a href="YOURLINKHERE"> <svg width="1.5em" height="1.5em" viewBox="0 -3 24 24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" preserveAspectRatio="xMinYMin"><use href="#img-hash"></use></svg> <span>LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE</span> </a> <span class="catlabel" tabindex="0"> <svg width="24" height="24" viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path fill="currentColor" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" d="M16.59 8.59004L12 13.17L7.41 8.59004L6 10L12 16L18 10L16.59 8.59004Z"></path></svg> <span>CATEGORY NAME HERE</span> </span> <div class="category"> <a href="YOURLINKHERE"> <svg width="1.5em" height="1.5em" viewBox="0 -3 24 24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" preserveAspectRatio="xMinYMin"><use href="#img-hash"></use></svg> <span>LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE</span> </a> </div> </nav> <script> $(".catlabel").on("click keypress", function() { $(this).next(".category").slideToggle(0); $(this).toggleClass("inactive"); }) </script>
CSS
.catlabel { display: grid; align-items: center; grid-template-columns: auto 1fr; column-gap: 0.15em; color: var(--channels); position: relative; left: -.3em; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 0.75rem; line-height: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.015625rem; font-weight: 600; font-family: Ginto, Whitney, 'Gibson', sans-serif, var(--font-normal); cursor: pointer; } .catlabel:not(:first-child) { margin-top: 1rem } .catlabel svg { --size: 0.75rem; width: var(--size); height: var(--size); transition: transform .2s ease-out,-webkit-transform .2s ease-out; } .catlabel.inactive svg { -webkit-transform: rotate(-90deg); transform: rotate(-90deg); } .catlabel span { overflow: hidden; white-space: nowrap; text-overflow: ellipsis; }
usage example
assuming you input the CSS correctly, this HTML:
Tumblr media
should give you this:
Tumblr media
more specific guide
editing links
in HTML, basic links look like this:
<a href="YOURLINKHERE">LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE</a>
with the actual URL inside the href bit, and the text you read goes where "LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE" is. for example, this link can be gotten from this code:
<a href="https://starlightpreviews.tumblr.com">this link</a>
"channel" links in the discord theme follow a similar pattern, with the addition of an <svg>...</svg> for the # icon, and putting the link display text inside a <span>...</span> to separate it from the #.
<a href="YOURLINKHERE"> <svg width="1.5em" height="1.5em" viewBox="0 -3 24 24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" preserveAspectRatio="xMinYMin"><use href="#img-hash"></use></svg> <span>LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE</span> </a>
if you want to add a new link, copy this whole block of code over, then:
add the URL inside "YOURLINKHERE"
add the display label inside "LINK DISPLAY TEXT HERE"
adding/editing categories
each category has a label (<span class="catlabel">...</span>) and a group of links (<div class="category">...</div>)
<span class="catlabel" tabindex="0"> <svg width="24" height="24" viewBox="0 0 24 24"><path fill="currentColor" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" d="M16.59 8.59004L12 13.17L7.41 8.59004L6 10L12 16L18 10L16.59 8.59004Z"></path></svg> <span>CATEGORY NAME HERE</span> </span> <div class="category"> <a>...</a> </div>
category labels are super similar to links, just without the "href" URL portions. all you edit is the "CATEGORY NAME HERE" bit, which is the label for that entire category.
if you want to add a new category, copy this entire block of code, then:
edit the "CATEGORY NAME HERE" label
add new links inside the <div class="category">...</div> section
