random thoughts about how toya’s excitement feels so lively and pure. i love how much i can feel his happiness from just the way he talks and his facial expressions

let’s take his new year’s side story as a little example, where he successfully did a kendama trick for the first time

i love how my first thought was “HE'S SO HAPPY” when i read this story. the subtle excited tremors in his voice and throat with each syllable... the rising pitch when he finally acknowledges it... the emotions portrayed of that first time disbelief when he said できた… (no exclaimation) all the way to when he really saw that he did it with his own eyes できたぞ！the addition of ぞ adds weight into his excitement.

anyways i don't know if you can hear it but the excited tremors in his voice... (that usually only happens when we are EXTREMELY excited and full of adrenaline) it adds so much realism... its not something that can be done on command easily... it breathes so much life into toya's purehearted innocence at even the smallest things.

a good way to describe it: sort of like in english, when we get really excited and go "oh↓ my→ god↑↑", the subtle vocal tremors in the vowel sounds as your pitch rises, the emphasis on the ending consonant sounds. it is exactly that but in japanese. for toya its especially obvious in the "te ga furuteiru" line. you can really hear the vocal tremors and a bit of slurring for the both hard and soft syllables.

Look guys! It's Menolly! (and Beauty) :D:D:D Been re-reading some Anne McCaffrey books. Dragonsong was the first Pern related book I read (wasn't allowed to read the 'grownup' ones till I was 15), and since my other favourite book at the was 'My side of the mountain' (running away from home and living in the forest kinda thing), Dragonsong had me hooked. But it's been a while so coming back to it after a few years was pretty cool.

I so desperately need to see more folks write abt the inherent dynamic of how Cygate is like. a very much mutual, back-and-forth protective relationship. They protect /eachother/ and I think that thats such an important part of it all. Tailgate gets dumbed down a lot but he’s soooo far from stupid or plainly naive, his naivety comes from his optimistic attitude and lack of experience with more extreme situations. But he’s so fucking smart, and hes a stubborn lil’ shit, and he’s gathered every bit of how Cyclonus works and keeps it all in mind for whenever something happens and the guy /needs/ someone who /gets/ him to step in.

The “See, that wasn’t so difficult.” line speaks soooo many words. He’s so fucking patient man, if there’s one thing he has oodles of experience with it’s the passage of time having to be spent for a Good Outcome. That’s sorta what the whole arc of that development was about, showing what /he/ is willing to do. They are equal in what they give and take. They’re anchors for eachother and I NEED more of that it’s like my favorite thing to see in art and writing of them. They’re going to make me so ill i genuinely teared up writing this wtf

Stepping into AU territory, what if Zuko had a childhood friend his own age? The son of some noble or general or bureaucrat perhaps?

One from before his exile?

What kind of arc would they have had and how do you think it would have affected Zuko's arc?

Uuuuh... well. On one hand, I'd appreciate that because I hate the fact that Zuko seems to have zero connections with his nation beyond his family. And no, Mai doesn't count, let alone Ty Lee, because they were Azula's friends first, ergo, he only knows them because of his sister: connections through his family.

So on paper, I'd like for Zuko to have a friend from the Fire Nation that maybe was a strong connection for him.

If it was a positive friendship, it would be interesting to see Zuko grappling with the reality of all his worldview changes upon returning home in Book 3... to find that his best friend is still in the same mindset of believing the Fire Nation's rhetoric. This could make Zuko a more active character throughout Book 3, and it would enhance the whole "he's got everything he wants now, but is it REALLY what he wants anymore?!" theme they were going for with him here. So that would have been interesting for sure, and there'd be two possibilities: either Zuko reforms this fellow, or he fails to, and they might have a depressing friends-to-enemies arc where Zuko has to fight his friend and defeat him (hooopefully with more compassion than he showed his sister, I dunno :'D).

There's also the possibility of the "friendship" being negative, which means toxic, which means not really friends but fake friends? Zuko and this guy could've had a competitive, unpleasant dynamic all along that then gets worse once Zuko comes home a hero and MAYBE this guy is scheming to try and get one over Zuko...? It would be a very unpleasant thing but it would serve to show how the Fire Nation's society in itself is corrupted and it's nearly impossible to tell who's friend or foe. This guy could be a social climber who simultaneously wants to put Zuko down and humiliate him and endear himself to Ozai by doing so? I dunno, this could be a bit of a stretch, but it's also a way to take that concept forward.

As for the final possibility... a friend who joins him on his journey? :'D as in, a fan-favorite concept with mild AUs that follow the same path but you add whoever to the exiled prince (or princess)'s journey? I... don't really vibe much with that. Iroh's already there as a mentor figure. A second character involved here would just clutter the situation and either wear on Zuko further (if the guy is, say, a comic relief type who makes his life a mess along with Iroh), or just... not provide much to the story other than needless drama? So, in this specific scenario, I wouldn't be too interested, personally, in exploring this route. Would be a little odd, imo.

All this being said, interesting things can be done by giving Zuko some more basic social graces, or just making it clear that his status means people will want to use him for connections or to improve their own status through him. It's, if anything, quite strange that canon decided to make him the biggest loner of all time, whose only friends in life apparently were his mother and uncle, and maaaaaybe if you squint Mai and Ty Lee but even that's not something pre-banishment, or at least, doesn't really look like they were particularly close in Zuko Alone. It makes the sudden turn of the finale, where Zuko is universally beloved and people are ready to die for him, while his sister is completely abandoned, feel a little less contrived. The whole concept that Azula was loved by randos and Zuko was not has never made any sense to me, because we have zero evidence of that. Zuko absolutely had more people on his corner, beats me why or how, and the story somehow wants to convince us of the opposite. So... I'd be perfectly happy for some of the story's themes (Zuko knows how to be friends with someone, Azula doesn't) to be enforced further with an OC like this one, who could show us that Zuko CAN be a good friend. Would be a change of pace that makes the guy a little less disagreeable for me, who knows? :'D

I always found it weird how Scraptrap sounds like the most composed and sane guy ever. (Voice-wise, not action-wise. Action-wise he's definitely a bit coo coo crazy. Trying to murder your son? Consciously walking into a trap? Yeah no he's insane.)

The reason I find it strange is because after spending 30 years-ish in the same small, decaying, mouldy "safe" room, between the same four walls while rotting and suffering in eternal agony, yeah seems fair enough to go a tad Feral and lose sense of humanity (I know I would.)

But no, my guy is talking like it's your average Tuesday morning and he doesn't even seem to complain about it in FNaF 6 at all. Good for him I guess

God twilight was so right lmao. I was half expecting cadance to say "i lost a bet" WHEEZE like i get that people wanna defend their pairing but the writing with that boy is flimsy at best and it really didn't have to be, we coulda actually been introduced to him and cadance *before* they were married lmao. any sort of relationship building before marriage would be nice, or not even just that, just character introductions could have done wonders

this all being said about the light dragon and how it is definitely the biggest highlight of totk (for me at least), i Do think a lot of the reaction to it Is dependent on botw and zelda's characterisation from that game... a lot of which is kind of lacking in totk because of her more passive role (e.g. you are told about her + see her actions after they have already happened)

like. if you didn't already really like zelda and were sold on her relationship with link (and not even just from a shipping zelink perspective, like. just UNDERSTANDING they have a strong bond from everything they've gone through together) then i'm not sure if any of that stuff in totk would've hit as hard as it did. the game does very little to build on what we already know about them, which i think is both a letdown to new players (which. i am not sure why they are playing the sequel before botw, but that is how totk acts most of the time lmao) and returning ones, and as time goes on it's become harder for me to blame people for not caring for it as much.
