the plot focuses on heiress to the underworld (also known as the medium in-universe), atalanta, who shows great raw power but has incredible difficulty channeling and restraining her emotions, which is super important when you're a necromancer. and while her mentors have taught her a lot, her aunt brisa never lets her hear the end of how far behind she is, as the clock is ticking for her ascension as head necromancer.

meanwhile, mortal delinquent and con artist kris has lived her whole life with the strange ability to sense the dead...when atalanta goes up to the surface under brisa's strict supervision as part of her training, what on earth happens when she manages to sneak off anyways and bumps into kris? it seems like the two are inexplicably connected, somehow...could the realms of the living and dead colliding like this only spell disaster just like atalanta's education in the medium has always taught her, or could it perhaps lead to something more...?

“niki?” you lean against the doorframe of the bathroom, still slightly disoriented from waking up so suddenly. niki coughs violently a few times before he shakily stands up. his eyes look even more tired in the dim bathroom light as you rush over to his side. 

“’m sorry,” he mumbles. 

“don’t be.” you do your best to keep him steady against your body as you guide him back to your shared bedroom. you gently help him lay back down against the sheets, brushing the fringe out of his eyes. his forehead is hot to the touch and his face is slightly flushed a sickly pale. “i’ll go get you some water and medicine.” 

niki’s eyes are closed by the time you return, though you can tell he’s still awake. he shifts as soon as you re-enter the room before forcing himself to sit up. despite his whines, he forces the bile taste of the medicine down before quickly drinking all of the water from the cup.

“thank you,” he whispers. 

you shake your head, brushing his bangs back once again. you lean forwards to press a gentle kiss against his forehead. “lay down.” niki moves back to make enough room for you to lay beside him before he relaxes against the sheets once again. his hand finds a resting place against your waist as he curls against your body, nuzzling his head against your chest. 

you rub a hand against his back as he contently sighs against your chest. “i love you.” 

“i love you too,” you murmur. “now get some rest.” 

niki rubs his eyes as he stumbles out of your bedroom. it’s quiet - unnaturally quiet for such a busy dorm. “y/n?” 

“niki,” you smile, gently wrapping your arms around him. “are you feeling any better?” 

“my head kinda hurts.” his voice is raspy as he leans his body weight against you. you hum, pulling you with him towards the couch. “what about practice? and our date?” 

“i talked to jungwon and heeseung already. they’re letting you stay home until you aren’t sick anymore,” niki pulls you down to sit beside him as he leans against your shoulder. “and don’t worry about the date. we can go out when you’re feeling better.” you pull back just enough to brush your fingers against niki’s forehead. the skin has cooled down slightly since the night before. “why don’t you go lay down while i make you some food?” 

“okay,” niki hums. you hold your hand out for him to take as your arm finds its rightful place around his waist. your touch is gentle as you guide him back to your room before he lays back down on the bed. you lean down, pressing a quick peck against his lips. 

“get some rest. i’ll be back soon.” 

true to your word, you return with a warmed bowl of miso soup not long after leaving. niki stirs when you set the bowl down on your bedside table. he squints up at you as you run your fingers through his hair, gently waking him up from his much needed nap. “hi baby,” you whisper. “i made you some soup.”

niki leans back against the headboard for support as you move to sit on the edge of the bed beside him. he smiles a little as you raise a spoonful to your lips to gently blow on it before holding it out for him. the flavor is familiar to him - you always make the same soup whenever he’s sick or has had a bad day. it’s a recipe you learned just after moving into the dorms when he was feeling especially homesick, making you call his mom and asking her for advice.

“thank you,” he whispers. you shake your head, continuing to hold out spoonful after spoonful for him. 

“where are we going?” niki’s question goes ignored as you tug him along with you into the dorm’s living room. you toss the clothes that lay sprawled out across the couch cushions aside to make room for the both of you to sit down before gently coaxing him onto the floor. 

“sit.” his protests are left unsaid as niki watches your scurry around into the kitchen to lay out an assortment of snacks and then into your living room to drape a blanket over his shoulders. it’s warm and heavy - almost like a cocoon around his body. 

you reach over, grabbing two controllers out of the pile you’ve slowly accumulated over the years before handing one to niki. his hands naturally sit around the curve of the plastic though he’s never used the specific model before. the tv screen is bright as it lights up before the familiar playstation logo appears. “you’re sick, and we can’t go out on our date, so i brought our date to you.” 

niki smiles, leaning his head against your shoulder. you lean over to press a sweet kiss against his forehead. “resident evil?”

Contrary to what the stuff I reblog might lead you to believe, I really don’t inherently hate the concept of reboots, they just have to be *done right*. This is probably not an example of that lol, but I have a little au sitting in the back of my mind about the Magic School Bus characters aged up and attending college, and this is my first attempt at getting an idea of what the girls would look like (we’re going back to the og cast with my girl Phoebe obviously, Jyoti can have a cameo or something). I haven’t actually drawn the guys and I probably won’t any time soon bcs like I said, school’s kicking my ass, but I have Thoughts about them as well. I kind of want to save my full detailed thoughts for if I ever get around to making individual character sheets with outfits and stuff, but who am I kidding that’ll probably never happen so here’s a brief rundown:

Phoebe’s always been big on animal rights and whatnot, so I took that and ran with it. She’s this chill bi vegan chick who lives in an rv and has like five pets that she rescued. I’m not super sure what anyone’s studying just yet (except Keesha) but I’m thinking Phoebe’s somewhere on the environmental science side of things.

Speaking of Keesha, I kind of want them together 👀 Keesha’s getting her BFA in dance with an emphasis on ballet. One of the episodes has her mention a dance class and as a dancer myself that’s all I needed lol (just realized how hard I’m projecting here, since Phoebe was my favorite character growing up).

D.A.’s probably the most thought out of this group. She’s great at pretending she’s put together but she’s actually a huge mess. She’s a perfectionist about every aspect of her life, to the point where is starts taking a serious toll on her mental and physical health. Maybe she needs a certain former classmate to help her realize she doesn’t always have to take everything so seriously 👀 I don’t know what she’s studying yet but it’s some obscenely difficult thing lol, she’s probably trying to get her PhD in like five years or something

Wanda I’m thinking doesn’t have a major decided on just yet, not because I don’t know but because she doesn’t know (I could be convinced otherwise). I feel like she’d grow into a bit of an adrenaline junkie and get a motorcycle and shit. She’s pan(?) with a heavy preference towards women. I’m most sold on her hair but least sold on her face shape, so I guess we’ll see. I have her personal life worked out pretty well but that’s kind of spoilery and not just about her, so I’m probably not going to share unless I post more for this. Maybe knowing that I still have things to tell will keep me invested and creating for this lol.

When I started this AU, a lot of my “stock” solutions for Haruka and Michiru didn’t quite work, so in some ways it was really challenging to make my own conceptions of character hold against this setup, especially when we CAN’T see what Michiru is thinking or feeling. But I think I like what I ended up with!

I was just thinking about Michiru, and what if she’d spent a hundred years watching and waiting, and finally saw something she wanted? Something she craved. 

“She had the same look in her eyes, and they were even stranger in full color, like they’d seen everything, and wouldn’t tell you, they would just let you drown.” This is one of those lines you come across every now and then, where it’s just so fucking good you kind of want to scream. God.

“Mina’s right. I’ll go into the basement for a pretty girl.” I love this. LOVE this. That despite everything, despite KNOWING better, Haruka’s convinced herself on some level that Michiru’s not dangerous. And it’s such a stupid fucking thing to do, but Haruka – EVEN MORE HERE PERHAPS THAN USUAL – as a goddamn martyr complex and wants to save the fucking world and everyone in it. And she, too, is lonely, and wants to love and be loved, and she wants a girlfriend and god, she’s just SO UNSPEAKABLY STUPID about this, but so understandably, and I adore it so fucking much. If there were one genre that would be yours, I think we’d agree it would be horror. And I love how the person is much at the root of it. Haruka’s being haunted, but it’s her own nature that’s really doing her in here. Those are ideas that are always so present your horror stories, and it makes them just so delicious.

THANK YOU. Yes I feel like horror is personal, and this moment, that sentence, is the linchpin of what I think this is for Haruka. That she can’t leave it alone. Despite everything she knows about MIchiru she feels BAD. She feels like she can save her. And that strange goodness that Michiru, if we could hear her side, could barely understand, well, that just makes her bolder.

Not just in the…spoopy scenes if you will- but those tiny emotions mentioned, the parallel and that lingering sense of insanity are so seamlessly woven throughout the writing. Gah, I just love it. Haunting beyond Michiru’s ghost who was being really fucking extra and creepy as well. Good god, she’s dead and she’s still the more dominant of the two.
