i'm so extremely irrationally annoyed by people not knowing what various terms mean and using them incorrectly like i feel like that's such an asshole thing to care about but oh my god stop

my overall interpretation of this song is "I'm trying to break through the friend zone (friendship barrier) so that you like me instead of thinking of me as a friend", so any vagueness in translation went in that direction

The use of "lock horns" in the official translation snippet + the HAO motifs give me the mental image of like, a hand-to-hand kung fu battle, so I leaned towards that imagery whenever there was vagueness (as opposed to like, a military campaign, for example)

deco's official english translations tend to be very liberal, so i tried to keep my translation a little more literal

Is it mistranslated? I’ve been trying to get help with this for a while because saying it doesn’t matter and that what Israel does isn’t justified is one thing, but when people lean on videos like this to support their colonial anxiety, it feels like they’ll use it to strengthen their movement and justify killing more people.

okay so i can understand the confusion, so let me explain

in arabic, we refer to zionists/israelis as "yahuud". that word DOES directly translate, in the literal sense, to "jews". BUT, please understand, that is an older arabic. it might mean "jews" but the way we use the word is how we refer to zionists, not jews. most palestinians say "yahuud" because that is simply what they, the zionists, were called when they came and stole the land. now, using the word "jews" to equate with zionists is old, of course, and it's not exactly right, but please understand that language evolves and language changes and sometimes language stays the same. we do NOT mean "yahuud" as in jews, we mean "yahuud" as in zionists. because zionists constantly equate themselves to jews, the language in arabic was just made to be that the word "yahuud" means zionists. every palestinian i know says "yahuud", but they don't mean jews. they mean zionists. language evolves, is what i'm saying. when we say "yahuud", we do not mean jews, because of course there is nothing wrong with being jewish. my uncle is jewish lol. my friends are jewish. there are tons of jewish palestinians. the language evolved to make "yahuud" mean "zionists". that's it. i'm not saying whether it's right or wrong to use that word to refer to zionists, i'm just saying that's how the language evolved in palestine.

because "yahuud" directly and literally translates to "jews", TECHNICALLY that video is translated correctly. but it wasn't translated in accordance to cultural and social norms that palestinians use in arabic today, so when the translation says "jews", replace it with "zionists" and THAT will be technically the socially correct translation. palestinians do NOT want to hurt jews, of course we don't. it's just our language has evolved differently, and so what used to mean "jews" now means "zionists", and that's simply what the video got wrong.

i hope this makes sense!!
