Match Review: Manchester United U21s 4-1 West Ham United U21s

We're into the semi finals...

United started brightly at Leigh Sports Village, but failure to put the likes of Ethan Wheatley and James Scanlon through saw the Hammers grow in confidence and ultimately take the lead.

A 30th minute error from Tyler Fletcher saw him robbed of the ball and West Ham break into the United box to Adiele, the Hammers' no10, for an easy driven finish.

Second Half FC showed up however, so all was well.

6 minutes into the second half and Tyler Fletcher would assist James Scanlon for the equaliser - his 22nd goal in 32 games this season, unreal.

Another Fletcher assist would happen nine minutes later, with Tyler winning an aerial ball back off Adiele and the poke actually working as a throughball for Ethan Wheatley, who finished cutely at the near post.

Sam Murray the left-back made it 3-1 with a heavily deflected shot to really kick West Ham when they're down, and Sam Mather added a fourth in stoppage time after an initial layoff from Murray and then a whole load of jinking through the West Ham defence to fizz one into the roof of the net. Job done, game over.

City away is our semi final reward, whilst Palace host Southampton. City won the league proper, whilst we came 5th, Palace 6th, Southampton 7th, so if anyone but City wins the playoffs... scandal. Lets hope it's us but if not, one of them to nick the thing.

"Reality no obstacle," She repeated, feet kicked up on the salvaged coffee table and head tilted on the back of her chair. Paused a beat. "I want an ancient red dragon that only eats Lizards."

"Good choice!" Chris pointed a finger, clearly with tongue in cheek so as not to laugh. He settled back again, ruffling the magazine as he moved to the next question. "For a second there I thought you were gonna say Tyler."

Match Review: West Ham United U18s 2-2 Manchester United U18s

Two defeats on the bounce, and an U18 PL Cup exit for Adam Lawrence's side as we lose 5-4 on penalties.

What a strange game.

United took an early lead after just 11 minutes thanks to a Jim Thwaites corner. Either Munro or Kukonki got a nod to it, and down it fell for Tyler Fletcher to tap home. 1-0 the visitors.

For all we've been high flying, an away game on a windy day in the cup after losing to City heavily in the league... it's going to affect the players a bit. Cue a West Ham 1-2 combo; just before and just after the break.

The equaliser came in the 42nd minute from Joshua Ajala; a weird combination of poor defending from United (no midfield help for the back four when they're all man-marking) and then a feeble save from Will Murdock which spilled the shot into the net.

A minute after the restart and Gabriel Caliste would put West Ham in front with a simple short tap of a shot, but again United's defending was at fault; Ajala basically running through the team with little opposition. Kamason the RB was behind the action, Mills the LB was covering right, Tyler Fletcher at RCB, Munro LCB and Kukonki covering LB and out of the picture. Poor.

Fortunately, Tyler Fletcher would turn assist-maker just five minutes later, with a slightly curling and bobbling throughball that looked like it was for Chido Obi but actually was for James Scanlon. The lively Gibraltan international then pulled clear and shot early to get the finish under the keeper and tie the game up.

Chido Obi got flagged offside in the 62nd minute when visibly not offside on the MUTV or West Ham TV streams (lol?) and wasted an initially well controlled effort. Joshua Ajala his opposite number also came close on a few occasions but the real stinker was a peach of a free kick from Jim Thwaites that hit the inside of the post and pinged back out. Awesu then had a double save to make in the 85th minute, but West Ham kept pushing on the attack to keep play away from their nervous defence.

Being a cup tie this game went on to extra time which was mostly uneventful, and then penalties:

Scanlon - goal [2-0]

Ajala - goal [2-1]

Fitzgerald - goal [3-1]

Golambeckis - goal [3-2]

Musa - miss [3-2]

Hargan - goal [4-4]

Bradbury - miss [4-4]

Nwosu - goal [4-5] -> West Ham United win

So that's that. United are out of the cup. A shame, but it happens.

Next up: an away trip to 12th place Liverpool. 11am, which sucks, but they are the second last team in the league vs us in second, with two games in hand on City. Time to close that gap and take back our rightful first place!
