I've been watching the Dave's Archives livestreams where he transfers commercials to digital and two protips:
Check the runout on the end of your videotapes! Sometimes the last quarter is left over time shifted video with unedited commercials. My favorite videotape in my collection starts with a PBS Sesame Street special and has runout of the Fall 87 CBS Saturday Morning lineup (which unfortunately is taken from a grainy antenna feed so it would be hard to digitize properly and looks better on my old Sylvania CRT).
Use rapid rewind and fast forward to respool your tapes to get rid of tracking issues. Most late model 2000s VCRs have the rapid FF and REW which makes it easier. I actually got this tip off of a physical media Usenet thread I read years ago. The trick always works when I buy tapes second hand.

I had no idea that Hayley Williams released EGO like it was a free MP3 code out of a product package. That was such a common thing in the 2000s. I used codes out of sandwich makings to download 20th Century Masters compilation series tracks in circa 2006 or so.
