The Contestants Are Here!

Thank you for your patience, I'm now ready to announce our contestants for the Obscure Character Showdown! There are 300 characters, split up into 6 groups of 50.

Here's how the schedule will work: Day 1 is Group A Round 1 Part 1, Day 2 is Group A Round 1 Part 2, Day 3 is Group B Round 1 Part 1, Day 4 is Group B Round 1 Part 2, Day 5 is Group C Round 1 Part 1, and so on and so forth until we reach Group F Round 1 Part 2, and then the next day we'll fold back over for Group A Round 2. I'm splitting up the rounds because tumblr can interpret posting many polls at once as spamming, and each group contains 25 polls, so. 13 one day, 12 the next.

I expect to start polls by Wednesday, May 31, but I may be a little later than that. I'll keep you updated.

When he was studying in Hades, he once put on manele and everyone there gave him the nastiest side eye ever

He writes poetry in his free time and he sometimes talks Paimon, Leraye and Belial into giving him the instumental needed

He has a very sooth voice, so even though his lyrics are bad people still let him sing on stage

He used to sing manele when he had a voice

Now he just plays the violin, because Jjuy always messes up his rhymes

He likes both the new and the old ones, though he slightly prefers the older ones

Ascension (Whatever It Takes)

Let’s talk about active and reactive characters, and what that tells us about a given story.

Whatever It Takes sets up Vaggie and Carmilla as… foils? Parallels? Opposites? The series is open ended in this field, it gives us archetypes, and invites us to draw our own conclusions.

As such, these two are protectors, but the way they go about it is both similar and wildly different. It’s complicated.

Let me explain.

SPOILERS AHEAD (Hazbin Hotel, Castaway)

The difference between an active and a reactive character is in the name. An active character takes actions and pushes the plot forward to further their own goals, while a reactive character responds to others and acts in accordance with that.

For example, Zestial is a fundamentally reactive character. He responds to the floor shifting underneath him in the previous song with damage control.

He watched the person who is ostensibly closest to him get undermined, so he tries to pick her up. In that way, he’s a pretty decent friend. He offers aid when she’s feeling low, and whatever he gets out of it, the man’s primary goal here is to help.

“What weighs on your soul, old friend? I explore you to share the load.”

At this point, I feel the need to explain my bias towards this character. Zestial is one of my favourite individuals presented in Hazbin Hotel, and it’s not because he’s benevolent, or powerful, or composed. It’s not because of his design, or his writing. It’s because I am weak, and his voice is smoother than the ocean at night. I don’t have to explain myself further.

Zestial is also reacting to the power dynamic being presented by the Vees. They didn’t do any damage, but Velvette felt comfortable making threats, and was utterly unintimidated by Carmilla, so Zestial feels like he needs to start moving his pieces to counteract that.

“If it was thou who slew the angel, why not let your fear be known?”

Essentially, Zestial needs to get himself and his friend back on top, and back to being untouchable. He wants to go back to not having to act at all.

But a side note here, notice how the rhyming scheme in this section is slanted, that’s because rhyming wasn’t always a thing in English poetry. It was ported over from other languages as previous poetry conventions were focused on the musicality and other elements of the words.

It doesn’t map out exactly, rhyming grew to popularity during the medieval times, and judging by Zestial’s dialect, that’s where I’d put him historically. But it does convey a sense of age to his words that adds gravitas to what he is saying.

When Carmilla starts singing, the music itself backs off to a quet guitar. She’s being vulnerable, rather than all powerful, and that contrasts with Zestial to exacerbate their differences. Zestial’s oomph makes Carmilla seem smaller, and Carmilla’s pensiveness amplifies Zestial in return.

As an example of an active character, Charlie and Velvette are fundamentally active characters whose actions make up the majority of the plot. Charlie pursues her dream, makes bargains, offers forgiveness, and Velvette… well she has one song, but Carmilla and Zestial’s actions are in direct response to that song’s ambition.

However, here’s the kicker. In my opinion, there is no such thing as active and passive characters. It’s a gradient.

The classification exists for a reason, it helps audiences understand, but in practice, nobody exists only on one side of the equation. Being reactive is a biproduct of existing in relation to other stuff. Chuck Noland, from Castaway, despite being the only character on screen for most of the movie, reacts to his environment and to his situation like a human being. Even if a character chooses to ignore their surroundings, that’s still a reaction to something. The decision to do nothing is still a decision

On the other end of the spectrum, all characters are active, because otherwise they aren’t characters. Being active is simply the practice of doing things. In the first Ranger’s Apprentice book, Baron Arald and Sir Rodney are generally pretty reactive characters, but their choice to challenge the Kalkara is an active decision.

In that sense, Zestial is a character who leans towards reactivity, but is still motivated to take action when threatened.

For the sake of visualisation. I have a graph.

We can start by putting Zestial and Charlie on opposite ends and filling in from there. I would say Husk is pretty reactive as a character, usually acting in response to Angel or Alastor, while Velvette is active in terms of antagonism, but she reacts to the death of the angel. Vox responds to Alastor by taking action, Adam responds to the death of the angel with violence, etc. Eventually, our graph looks a bit like this:

Now, you may notice that there is a gap in the middle. Despite all appearances, I am analysing Whatever it Takes, so guess which two characters go there.

This was actually a pretty difficult choice, and it comes down to my grievances with this episode, and my critique of the show as a whole.

I laid this out in more detail in the previous post but suffice to say that Hazbin Hotel is too short, and that hinders episode three because the series doesn’t have enough time to capitalize on anything that is set up here.

Carmilla suffers enormously because of this, because the dynamic with Vaggie doesn’t go anywhere (other than Out For Love, but we will get there when we get there), and she doesn’t have much screen time beyond this, so we don’t really know where she sits on the scale.

The song that I have been dancing around sets up a place in the centre of the graph and makes them parallels because they fit in the same slot here, but then Carmilla isn’t in the rest of the series much, so she ends up falling further towards the reactive end of the scale.

The reactiveness itself isn't what I have an issue with, its the inconsistency.

Once again, I blame this on management not understanding their own product, but it’s important to understand how that has affected the end result.

So, the key metaphor established in this song is that of the keeper and armour. The protector and the guardian, and that is what sets up their place on the scale.

Armour isn’t a character, and even in terms of what it does, it’s not a particularly proactive item. You can’t hit someone with a helmet unless you really want to, and even then, it's going to be less effective than most of your other options. But what armour does do, is get in the way.

Armour interposes itself between you and danger, sacrificing its own wellbeing for yours. It’s a guardian, a protector.

Vaggie is positioning herself as a someone who will do whatever it takes to save those she cares about. She is the knight who will stand in the darkness and ward it off to protect the light. She is not a disgrace. She is vengeance. She is the night. She is... Batman!

I’m humanising an inanimate object here, because Vaggie is doing the complete opposite. For Vaggie, love is putting her partner above herself, to the point of self-sacrifice. It means that she is willing to let go of her will to live to get in the way of any danger coming towards Charlie. She is dehumanising herself and saying that her desires are forfeit for Charlie’s dream.

“I’ll be your armour, Do whatever it takes, I’ll make the mistakes I’ll spend my life being your partner”.

Now, Charlie has done absolutely nothing to persuade Vaggie of this. She has been supportive, if a little headstrong. Vaggie has reacted to Charlie putting herself in danger and decided that was how she was needed.

There is one scene that I’ve seen pointed to as Charlie re-enforcing Vaggie’s attempt at self-sacrifice, that being the training scene. But that’s just asking for help, that’s not manipulation, that’s shared responsibilities on a task. That’s teamwork.

Yes, Charlie is oblivious to this side of Vaggie’s motivation, but that’s because Vaggie hasn’t told her about it. Vaggie vents on an abandoned boat, alone, singing to herself. Charlie doesn't know that because Vaggie is convinced that if she is vulnerable, she won't be useful.

So, if it isn’t Charlie who told Vaggie that her individuality is worth sacrificing, I wonder who did. Maybe a military leader of some kind who values subservience above all else. Maybe someone who surrounds themselves with masks so that they don’t have to realise that people are individuals. I wonder who that points to.

Carmilla, meanwhile, positions herself as a keeper of secrets, a profession and a type of action she can take. She sets herself up as responding to news and stamping it out, taking action to hide things.

“I always thought that I would keep blood off my face, But when that thing attacked, I had to act To cross that line and keep them safe.”

I want to restate that Carmilla is a hypocrite. She makes weapons and is convinced that her wealth will protect her from the consequences. Or rather, she was a hypocrite.

It took an angel rocking up out of the blue and nearly killing one of Carmilla’s children to jumpstart her character development. Just like Zestial, she was bulletproof, except that she had people she cared about.

The angel made Carmilla think. Her wealth didn’t protect her, the weapons did nothing to stop the assailant, and the violent response to a violent problem only brought about more issues. There might be a war on the horizon within hell, and both sides will have weaponry given to them by Carmilla. If the war starts, both she and her daughter will be killed, and it doesn't matter which side by, they will die at the hands of weapons she made.

As a response, Carmilla takes action, trying to recover her safety by keeping the secret of her vulnerability. She’s still not a good character, but she’s had her security compromised, and that’s a start.

Which brings me to the parallel between Carmilla and Vaggie, and I think that it is limited, but important to note. Both are protector characters; both respond to danger and take action. But that serves to show their differences even more. Vaggie is self-sacrificial and openly vulnerable so that her ward doesn’t have to be, and Carmilla is closed off and defensive all the time.

This is reflected in their music. One of my favourite parts of Hazbin Hotel is the fact that whenever they sing duets or even chorus pieces, its never everyone singing the same set of notes in their own register. In this case Vaggie’s music is more floaty, and according to Musescore, in a different key to Carmilla, who is dynamic, but grounded.

Zestial's design strength comes back here. He has too many eyes and a mouth that's a weird shape. What expression is this? What emotion? Is he confused? Disappointed? What's going on? Having a manipulator character have a mask is good, but making their entire face an unreadable blank slate is even better.

But the difference is also conveyed by their actions. Carmilla is static while she explains herself to Zestial. She is focused on the people she is protecting and the person whom asking for help from.

Vaggie’s section doesn’t really show Charlie at all, except through the geography. Vaggie is constantly climbing when she sings, constantly rising, as if her love lifts her and brings her up from rock bottom. Even though she’s not dancing, the choreography is telling a story.

When the camera shows her face, she is always looking upwards. Charlie has given her hope.

Final Thoughts

Episode three’s problems aren’t its own fault. The episode is setting up elements that never arrived, and that causes it to feel bloated.

I actually like this song, although for a while I couldn’t articulate why. I like to listen to it, but as far as analysis went, I was at a loss. This post has taken me the longest that any has in a while. But I ended up with something, so I’m happy.

But, from the series’ weakest episode, to its strongest. Next week we start episode four, talking about Poison, and… oh boy that one’s going to be a lot.

_The day you were presented to him he thought it was ironic, humiliating to "your kind" even: a human given to him for personal serves. Now, isn't it wonderful. The one of who were once "in charge" now stood below (how it was meant to be long time ago, he gloated).

_It was quet delightfull at the begining.

The way you never dared to complain or go against the said. No matter the mockery nor threat, you always stood in silence, tongue bitten, eyes shamefully (as he foolishly thought back then) fixed on the floor - never to look up if you're not ordered to.

_But time have passed. He started to realize how much power he has over you. So much.. too much.

_At first it was a simple comparing, an insignificant note to himself:

The way those other humans spoke, the way their faces twisted in fear or flew with happiness, how characters were seen in their simple chatting, how gestures and the moves expressed so much.

Yet, you always stayed the same.

Dull eyes of yours that never shared the same amount of joy, or saddness, or anger - anything so many others did. The never changing features of your face.. there was truly nothing capable of making them wince even slightes - the mighty fear of death herself was powerless against it. Meaningless.

_And that - though, never accepting the fact - was what started to scare him the most.

No matter the damage that pulled your body dangerously neer the edge, or amouts of blood seeking the way out of your flesh, you forced yourself to stand straight on those trembling legs, ready to take orders while still capabel of, while still conscious.

They all called it "the rightfull discipline". Some scoffly, others with pure proud.

He called it madness.

For him that was no discipline if it made a person slaughter themself in attempt to obey. And he ..wished (?) he was exaggerating with this type of statement.

There never was a single doubt behind those voids of eyes when his hand squeeze your neck especially hard against the wall in one of his many tantrums. And not a single cry of pain after a few more words said wrong that caused you to bleed on the floor with the abdomen open by your own now bloody hands. Him standing there opposite watching the dark red puddles spread, still processing how fataly abstract his "order" was.

_Only then he understood how radical Talon was in relation to creating you.

_How wrong in many ways you are.

_How important his next actions will be.

I'm a big fan of reverse type of tropes and the swap vesion of "human teaches machine how to feel" lays PERFECTLY with this character.

I am going to add more to this little idea in other posts (hopefully..), but here is one important thing to know about the reader/ y/n: they are EMOTIONLESS here. They were taken by Talon and got experimented on almost the same way Amélie was once, but um lets just say they took it to the new level here. Cause, lets be real, Widowmaker is not really emotionless-emotionless if you know what I mean. Even if we don't take into account latest events, she was showing some sort of feelings from the start and it just DOES NOT work for me, okay?

Also, no, the shit that was done and still going on with reader/ y/n/ you(???, bare with me I'm sorta new at this) is not cool in any way. Those mf did a number on you and Ram has to deal with a sht ton of trauma (the reason behind his actions will also be told, but lets make it step by step, guys)

can i request an earth 42 miles morales x reader story where she found him injured in a valley and he was still in the prowler suit but she didnt care (or she just didnt see clearly since it was night time) so she aproached him and miles was like go away even threatend her at some but but she then tells him to shut up so she can work in peace. She already studies in medicine and she vent to a grocery store when she found him and she quickly ran home to get the suplies she thought she needed. So basicly she doesnt care if he kills her she just wanted to help him and thats it so at the end milles is just quet and doesnt know how to respond to her like doesnt she know who he is sure its dark out side and they cant see each others faces clearly but the suit should by now give away his identite. So lets say milles didnt clearly see her face and vanted to see her again to see she didnt give anything about him away no other reason, he didnt want to see her so he could feel the same warmth she gave him when she cerfouly touched him he didnt want to hear her soft voice again that for some reason eased his pain when she praisd him that he was doing a good job staying still and not moving. You had helped him when he was injured. You do not remember ever inviting him into your apartment, much less tell him to make himself comfortable.

" Hi." His distorted voice sounds from his mask.

You huff, not having the energy for this today.

" Yeah, uhm, I don't remember inviting you to my hous- WHY ARE YOU SITTING ON MY COUCH WITH YOUR DIRTY BOOTS ON MY CARPET?!" You scold him.

To your surprise, he listens, taking off his shoes as he gently puts them down beside the couch.

" Thanks. So what are you doing here? Are you injured?" You ask him, checking him out before walking off into the kitchen to get a glass of water.

He doesn't react for a good minute, his mask covering his face, shielding whatever expression he's housing. To your surprise, his mask unclasps, and fold into itself on the back of his head.

It surprises you. He's handsome but seemingly also tired. You're not entirely sure what he's trying to create between you.

" Wanted to see you again." He tells you straight up, making you even more confused.

" Why?" You ask him.

He shrugs, glancing around your place, seemingly looking for an answer.

Your expression remains guarded, but you don't step away.

Wilson’s Dad energy

Something I don’t think Wilson Higgsbury gets credit for, is while it’s questionable wether or not he should be put in charge of the kids he does care about them and supports them in a way he wishes he could have been supported as a kid.

Also, as a pleasant surprise, Wilson loves children in general, a trait not usually given to the scientist character. This is evident in his quotes on the children and their stuff, I have been wanting to compile as many as I could in a post for a while. The game has rapidly evolved, especially Don’t Starve together so if I miss any let me know.

Let’s start with Wendy and Abigail

Abigail is considered a mob since she is a ghost, but she counts especially with the miss information that gets spread around about how Wilson dos not like her which isn’t true, far from it. I mean yeah, Wilson constantly quotes OTHER ghosts about how much he does not like them, but not his ghost child, or any other ghost child interestingly

Pipspook- “Awww, does someone have a little boo-boo?”

It sounds condescending in text, but from Wilson it sounds genuinely nice, especially since his other quotes on random ghost consist of “you got a lotta nerve existing!!” Each character has an observation quote on Abigail, and each one is either scared, sad, or in Willow’s case just curious, but what is Wilson “that offends me as a scientist” Higgsbury’s impression?

Abigail- “Aww, she has a cute little bow”

That’s a flower Wilson. But it doesn’t make his first impression of Abigail any less endearing, and he has more enduring quotes about both sisters in the Wendy rework, or more he has dos not always understand but try’s to be supportive Dad energy quotes like the Sisturn.

Honestly, I didn’t think the game would take Wendy in a Green Witch direction but I am here for it. A lot of people think that the ashes you use for the urn are Abbeys but it’s kinda part of the “spell” for lack of a better word. It’s similar to the mini shrines Japanese families keep in their house of their loved ones when they pass but with a magic twist, the ashes are for protection and the flowers are offerings.

When the Sisturn is full of flowers it raises the sanity of every survivor near it. Technically, that good calming aura is actually Abby herself calming the others with her presence. That’s why characters like Wickerbottom are shocked at the presence they feel, it’s Abby.

Wilson isn’t fazed by the Sisturn, or freaked out by it, and shows his support in true Dad fashion

Sisturn (empty)- “Some flowers would liven it up a bit”

Sisturn (some flowers)- “A few more should do the trick”

Sisturn (full)- “What a brilliant boo-quet!”

The first pun kinda made me roll my eyes but the last one was really cute. He treats the Sisturn like it’s a normal thing to have, him and Webber are the only two not acting brand new, and contributes to gathering flowers for it like the rest of the characters but doesn’t think it’s weird or even a big deal. It’s when the Sisturn is full that they feel Abby’s presence and people start going “woah, what!?” But Wilson exclaims “what a brilliant boo—quet!” To feeling Abby’s calming presence and I think that’s beautiful.

In the rework, Wendy is interested in plants, and in the constant becomes a full blown green witch with her ghostly elixirs for Abby. Wilson, who has a distaste for magic still shows support for the elixir’s and they are technically science the same way Wilson uses science, with the line between magic and science being razor thin.

All Ghostly Elixirs- “Ah yes. Vary science-y”

Not really high praise, but Wilson being a man who speaks without thought and is actually choosing his words carefully here, shows him caring about the person listening to him. He knows this is something she cares about, he doesn’t have to understand it to support it. Also is it just me, or did Wilson name these potions?

Revenant Restorative, Spectral Cure-All, Unyielding Draught, Distilled Vengeance, Nightshade Nostrum, and Vigor Mortis

I know everything is a pun in this game, but Vigor Mortis definitely sounds like something he would come up with.

Side note on Wendy- Wendy speaks in deadpan and has a dry sense of humor like Maxwell, but she isn’t needlessly mean either and she is actually really attached to the other survivors (love is found in the trauma bond). As a matter of fact a lot of her quotes is her expressing fear of them leaving her. She shows signs of abandonment issues, and that’s not surprising, the sudden death of an immediate family member can sometimes cause the child to feel abandoned, even when they know it wasn’t their choice to go. She has some interesting quotes on the ghost forms of the survivors.

Wendy to Wilson: That was a bad experiment Wilson….I’ll get a heart

Wendy to Willow: Say hi to Abigail while I go get you a heart Willow

Wendy to Maxwell: should I give you a heart? Hmm..

Wendy to Webber: A heart could bring back my friend

Wendy to Wortox: did you lose a game Wortox?

These are all in good humor and fondness but she has a bit more interesting quotes for a few of the other ghosts players

Wendy to Wolfgang: Everyone leaves…

Wendy to Wickerbottom: everyone that leaves takes a piece of my heart

Wendy to Wigfrid: Don’t go Wigfrid…take my heart..

Wendy to Wes: you won’t leave us if we give you a heart, right?

At first I thought maybe she liked them a bit better since she shows a fear of losing them and maybe wasn’t that close with Wilson or Willow. But then realized that she has similar reactions to Webber, her vary best friend, and Wortox, who has done the impossible and made Wendy laugh! So now I am thinking it’s the other way around.

Kids feel like they can be teasing and mischievous with people and adults they trust and know like them. Perhaps she doesn’t know where she stands with some survivors and she gets more desperate for them not to leave because she is afraid they will leave her. With Wickerbottom I think it’s more her being hard to read so Wendy doesn’t always feel reassured, even if Wickerbottom watches her and the kids a good chunk of the time. Wendy may feel like she can tease and be calm with Webber, Maxwell or Wilson because she is more reassured they don’t want to leave her.

This story is notorious for being all over the place, they have bits of their story and lore everywhere, it’s like your seeing the notes and story board at all times and your witnessing the story be put together in real time. Recently, they have been leaning more to the original don’t starve together origin of Wilson and Willow being the OGs and everyone showing up a little later (don’t starve inevitable being an example). But that could change, let’s be real.

My point is, if we see it from that point of view, Wendy was actually the third character to be added to the game. It would explain why she seems so comfortable with Wilson and Willow, she even has this sweet quote for when Willow sets something on fire

Wendy to fire starter Willow: come Willow, let’s watch the world burn together

Wendy may have a harder time understanding Wilson, but I get the feeling that he is a positive constant presence, and she is VARY used to having him around. So if he leaves the main base for more then a couple of days, she may not ask where he is, but she will visibly start looking for him. And when she eventually finds where he Galavanted off to, she will just stand there and wait for him to notice her, it never fails to make him scream and jump a foot in the air. Abigail thinks he’s funny

Next Up is Webber

Now Wilson HATES spiders, and I mean really hates them, and yeah there are quotes of Wilson being wary of Webber

Attacker Webber-I’ll roll up a news paper, just in case

I think it’s to show that Wilson didn’t trust Webber right away, I think what brings Wilson around is how much Webber likes him. It’s heavily hinted that Wilson reminds him of his Dad, and we recently learned that his Father never had time for him. Maybe Wilson learns this and they started getting closer from there, because he definitely does go out of his comfort zone for Webber. Like with the spider care addition to the game. Wilson has some pretty cute quotes for the spider care iteams

Healing goop is an item that heals Webbers pet spiders

Healing Goop-If I see any spiders around I I’ll be sure to give it to them. Maybe

He is REALLY not a fan of the pet spiders, but he is willing to get over himself for Webber, or at least he is trying.

There are also these cute treats Webber makes for them

Wilson has two quotes for them

1) “oh wow that looks….delicious Webber”

2) “Ah I…just ate! Why don’t you give it to one of your spider friends?”

Wilson may be a bit more graceful then Willow, but just like her, he is as blunt as a brick. So him holding back to not squash his enthusiasm, especially when he knows Webber holds his opinion in high regard, speaks volumes.

Next is Wurt

Wurts back story is no doubt painful, but thankfully her reasons for hanging out with the survivors isn’t. The survivors have kids her age to play with, kinda implying that it’s vary rare for kids to get turned into merms, and as a bonus they have this stuff called candy!! Also books are neat

Wilson is not a fan of many of the monsters of the world, but she is a kid and now one of them so he acts accordingly

Being revived by Wurt-“why thank you, Wurt”

I don’t know, Wurt kinda has a hard time communicating and is still learning human stuff, so I thought Wilson’s clear, direct and cheerful thank you was especially sweet.

Craftsmerm House- “it’s actually kinda cute”

Wurt has a quote on the craftsmerm house “made it with own claws” so it’s sweet that he supports her enthusiasm.

Finally we have Walter

Walter is (as far as we know) the oldest of the survivor children, like a lot of kids his age he has something to prove. Walter actually brings something new to the table in terms of gameplay, Walter is presented as a support class player, much like Wortox and Wormwood.

Wormwoods position is defense, he can create traps to create a line of defense in battle and defend bases.

Wortox’s position is technically medic, he can collect the souls of fallen enemies and release them near allies to heal them. He also does not need the same resources humans do, he doesn’t eat food, so he easily acts as an extra set of hands to gather supplies.

Walters position is overwatch, not the game, the actual position overwatch is to be that extra gun that waits outside an operation and comes in if their is trouble. Walter is ment to stay on the side lines and be supporting fire. He also has vary handy ammo that confuses enemies and momentarily stops agro towards fellow survivors. As an added bonus he fears vary little and can tell stories around the fire

Being a supporter he has the personality of someone you can rely on, he wants to be Johnny on the spot. So I had a new respect for Wilson for his quote on being revived by Walter

Reviver- “I can always count on Walter”

Wilson knows how important it is to Walter to be seen as helpful. To be seen as that person you can count on. This quote really made me smile. Wilson’s quote on ghost Walter is cute as well

Walter, Ghost- “I know your having fun, but we’d best find you a heart”

I love that Wilson never try’s to over parentify himself on the kids. Instead of trying to be an authority figure, he prioritizes being a comforting parent figure rather then an authoritative one.

Maybe it’s because he knows what it feels like to be without one, and how hurtful it is to have your interests dismissed when your young. But that’s just my take on it, it’s still a popular theory that Wilson is a remittance man. And with the Wilson rework of him just kinda being dropped at his house may be starting to prove that right

Fallout 4 and it's relationship with the past.

Recently I decided to finally complete fallout 4 and it's main questline. In the past I complete all dlc but couldn't bring myself to actually finish any of the fraction storylines. Now, after playing through pretty much all isometric fallouts except 76 I have a lot of throughs about f4 quet strange ideas about the past of American mythos, and the ways mane game and it's factions tackle it, as well as my personal thoughts about the ways f4 fractions were and weren't utilized in the game. I will try to make a separate post for each one of them in the future, but in short: the game really is a "mixed bag" in regards to its attempts at satirising American culture and it's mythos. (I know I am being a Captain oblivious here)

Mythology nerd reacts/talks about Dislyte part 1.- Djoser

So Djoser is the Esper of Atum. So let's start with introdusing Atum. And sorry for the bad English, it's not my first launvige, and I have troubles with writing even in my own launvige.

So Atum is the primordial God in Egyiptian mythology. In some version he created himself, in other versions he was formed from the primordial waters Nu. In early versions he created the first gods Shu, and Tefnot, buy simply siting them out of his mouth, and in other versions he created them buy his hands. The two of them were corious about the primordial waters that surrounded them, and one time they went to explor it, then they disapeard in the dark ess. Atum unable to acept the loss of his children sent a messenger the Eye of Ro to find them. Luckly they were found, and as Atum reunited with his son, and daughter, he let out tears of joy. And from those tears of joy humans were created. Later on Shu, and Tefnot got married, and started making the other gods. Yes there are other versions but for the sake of simplicity I left them out. But

But a queck history lesten first. Believe me it will be importent for later so bear with me. I try to tell ancient Egypt's history as fast as posible. Ancient Egyiptian history can be sepereted into three parts, with a few transitional ages when it comes to art history, so I will use this. So if the time line is has a few holes in it, it's because of this. The first one is the Old Kingdom that started in approxemetly in 2686 BC and ended in approxemetly in 2181 BC. And is often referd to as the "Age of the Pyramids". It started with rule of Egypt's first pharaoh Djoser, and it's last pharaoh eather being Netjerkare Siptah, or Neferirkare depending on the scholar. The second is the Middle Kingdom, which approxemetly started in 2055 BC, and approxemetly ended in 1650 BC. And it's first pharaoh was Mentuhotep II, and it's last pharaoh was eather Merneferre Ay, or the last pharaoh of the Thirteenth Dynasty. And the last one is the New Kingdom. It started in approxemetly 1550 BC, and ended in approxemetly 1069 BC. It's first pharaoh was Ahmose I, and it's last pharaoh was Ramesses XI. And it was later fallowed by the Late Period of ancient Egyip, which was later fallowed by the Macedonian rule, when Egypt was under the rule of the Macedonian Empire, and this was the time when the Philopator dynasty started with Ptolemy I Soter, and this era ended with the death of Cleopatra. And this is where we usually stop talking about ancient Egyiptian history, because here Egypt become Roman theritory.

So why did I meantiond this? Well for many reason, but for now let's back to Atum. In the Old Kingdom it was believed that Atum lifted the dead pharaoh's youl from the Pyramids to the affter life. And besides all this he was also a solar deity, and was associated by Ra, and was linked with the evening sun. In the Book of the Dead one of the primer,that was writen in around 1550 BC, and most well know sources when it comes to Egyiptian mythology, he was said to ascended from chaos-waters with the appearance of a snake, and the Snake renewing itself every morning. And he had two consorts Iusaaset (who was a genderbend version of Atum), and Nebethetepet (who was probably also a genderbend version of Atu) who are both pretty Obscure.

So this was a lot to take in, but it will all make sense. I promis. But now let's talk about Djoser.

So let's start with his name. He was named after the first pharaoh Djoser, who united lower, and upor Egypt. Which first makes sense, because like I said Atum was the first God in Egyiptian mythology, it's actually a quet nood to it, and second it shows that the devs cared about it, even if people will not really notice it. Which is a thing that I can aprove of.

Now let's talk about his back story. Djoser was an orphan, and was alon his entry life until the day he meet his wife. Then they had a daughter together. Djoser finaly had a family, he félt complite, and vowed to protect his family. But sadly he could't protect them for everything. His wife soon daid after giving birth to they daughter. After this he become an Esper. His daughter become the sunshine in his life. But she fall ill with a dreadfull sickness. Djoser tried everything that he could to save her, which included joining the Shadow Decree. In the end he had to say goodbye to her. After this he directed his whrath, and anger at the Esper Union, and he become one of the most wanted person in Grandis. But old habbits never die, he still makes too many food because he used to cook for his family.

So there are many similarities, and defrences between him, and Atum. They both were alone in the start, and they both are father who lost they child, and both of them are older then the others (Djoser is 40 by the way) . But the similarities end here. Djoser only had one child a daughter, and Atum had two children a son, and a daughter, and in Atum's case he got his children back, and his tears were from joy, whaile Djoser had to say a finel goodby to her, and his tears were from sarow.

In aapearenc the devs took some creativ liberties. Which in my eyes is not a problem. Atum was usually depicted as this:

And this character design absolutly works. He is suposed to be big, and sceary looking, and he looks the part. He is wearing multiple ankhs. And it's just a pretty good character design over all.

probably a stupid question, but what inspired the story of AAZW?

That’s not a stupid question AT ALL!… but strap on, because this is gonna be a trip, and it’s probably not gonna go how you might expect…

It all started years back, when I had first obsessed about miphlink and read every single fic made by the fandom. I remember there was quite a few fics that talked about how the zora were seen as “savages”, and some talked about their culture, and in my mind I thought “huh… funny. There’s not a single fic about Zora courting customs. Somebody should write about it! I’d be fun!”. At the time I was also in another fandom whose name I shall not mention, but it does have quete a big thirsty headcanons on… banging rocks. But time kept passing and nobody seemed interested in writing about it, until I saw a couple of Sidlink fics that actually talked about the theme (with lot’s of sexy stuff -///-), and I again thought “Cool! Now I only have to wait for someone to write it for miphlink!”

Plot twist: nobody did.

Then last year (… whoah! it’s been a year already :0) I was watching some random videos at 3 am, one of which showed a couple of cranes dancing around each other, trying to impress a mate. I saw it and thought “… Link would totally do that.” And it just… I needed to see it, you know? I needed someone to write about this dork competing with other Zora to try and impress Mipha. I started to think about many other ways he could try to impress it. I had a scenario where he would shieldsurf and to crazy jumps, and another where he even did a growling competition with some handsome prince coming from a far away land. It was right there. And nobody was writing about it, and I was bamboozled. Was I a weird bug with kinky ideas? Was the sidlink tag just way hornier than the miphlink tag?

The final push came when, as a means to improve our writing skills, me and some friends challenged each other to write a fanfic with a random ship, and two random prompts. Now, I’m not gonna tell which prompts I got, because they would spoil the ending or AAZW, but it had to do with Zora customs. And at first I though “Okay! this will be un!” but then “…. wait… what if I use this as a chance to finally write THAT idea? What if I use this to finally write link acting like an idiot in front of the domain to win Mipha over?! FUCK IT! IF NOBODY WILL DO IT, I WILL DO IT MYSELF!!!!”

And the rest, as they say, is history -w-

TL:DR: I just really wanted to see Link do a dumb chicken dance in order to impress his dolphin girlfriend, and my friends challenged me to write a fic using some prompts, and they fit really well.

Obviously the story started changing here and there when I actually started to write it. For example, instead of bringing over some unknown Zora that would challenge Link for Mipha’s hand, Muzu became the one to “fight”, and I started to go deeper in the themes of cultural background, racism and expectations.

IT`S FINALLY DONE YAAAY!

So, I was epsent for quet a while for a good reason - Ukrainian Visual Novel Jam #2

It`s my second game jam and it was WILD but plesant expirience. I got place in really good expirienced team, so this time workflow was more oraganized and harder at the same time.

Unlike last time, when I was the only one artist on team and have to carry all of graphics, this time it was only backgrounds, but it was harder due to higher detalisation level.

In total, in time period of 2,5 weeks i drew 5 locations including 13 alternative versions.

Also, we had awesome animator and lead artist in our team, so all of backgrounds has cool animations in game, but I won`t post all of those here.

Mini Writing Dump; Aina 2

Pairing: Aina x Kougetsu

"K-Kougetsu!!" Aina calls while running towards the white haired person. Fae didn't expect to see them at the tiny village their mission had brought them to, but refused to question faer luck too much lest it be taken from faer. They whirl around immediately, having recognized their voice the second they heard it. "AINA!!!" They screech, sprinting to meet faer. Kougetsu collides with faer at full force, making the two stumble and fumble around but refusing to let go of each other. Aina giggles when they're hefted up into a bear hug, wrapping their arms around their shoulders. They just barely keep faerself from hooking their legs around Kougetsu's waist; this display is already attracting so much attention. "I've missed you soo much!" Kougetsu says, smooshing their cheek into Aina's. "I've missed you too, K-Kou," Fae blush, turning to press a kiss into their cheek. They laugh and pepper Aina's face with kisses before setting them down.

Aina starts to dig through the multitude of pockets on their person, searching for something while telling them "I've got someth-thing for you." Eventually they pull out a soft cream colored handkerchief with green embroidered edges folded into a triangle. There's a embroidered bouquet on the side that Kougetsu can see, it looks so delicate. They cup their hands and watches as Aina presses it into their palms. They take in the details, noticing tiny white specks that're meant to be tiny flowers and the striking reds of most of the flowers while little blue ones and green leaves break it up carefully. Kougetsu gives faer big puppy eyes while they start explaining, "I know it's not th-the most useful th-thing in th-the w-world. But I'm not great at much else, besides embroidery and flow-wers and medic-cal jutsu, so..." Fae gesture to the little triangle. "Do you w-want to know about th-the flow-wers? In the bouq-quet?" They ask.

"Yes please," Kougetsu replies quickly, their voice cracking at the end. Aina giggles nervously, not completely sure if said voice crack was a good thing or not, "Th-the flow-wers I sewn ont-to it are amaryllis, baby's breath-th, forget-me-nots, marj-joram, th-thyme and gloxinia. I picked th-those for th-their meanings. Th-they sum up my feelings for you p-pretty w-well." They offer a sweet little smile. It's one of the rare times Kougetsu doesn't have something to say, they gawk at their little treasure. In fact, the silence goes on long enough for Aina to get more nervous. "D-do y-you....l-like it?"

They nod aggressively, still finding their voice. "I love it so, so much," they whisper. They take a second to breathe then ask, "What do the flowers meaning, Aina?"

Aina's little smile turns into a playful smirk, "I w-was going to mak-ke th-that a little game for you. You find out th-the meanings and I'll give you k-kisses for each one."
