I love Akane. She's one of my favorite characters in DR2. She's funny, awesome, and full of personality. I need to make that clear because I am about to complain about this character at length.

Akane is a prime example of the "Character who is fantastic whenever saying and doing things onscreen but really deserved better writing around them than what they got" phenomenon.

Let's start with her fucking Talent. The Ultimate Gymnast.

Akane's Talent is the most arbitrary in the entire franchise. It never comes up. It never influences the course of the story. In fact, it has no influence on her personality or skillset either. It's literally just there.

Akane's skillset is general all-around athleticism. She has the natural physique and huge appetite of a shonen protagonist. These are explained by her growing up in extreme poverty and scrounging for food for her and her siblings, and by her constantly having to run away from people.

A generous interpretation of that is that she was a food thief. But given that every anecdote about her past is sexualized in some way, I have concerns about what she was running away from. Akane comes from a lot of abuse.

In any case, she did a lot of parkour growing up and then one day, one of her abusers was like, "You should do gymnastics." So she did, and her naturally powerful physique allowed her to excel. She doesn't actually care about gymnastics but it pays the bills. It's just an activity she was able to drop into with her physique for easy money.

Like. Okay. Gymnastics? That's not an activity you can just drop into and then coast on pure physical acumen.

Like. Sure. I could buy Leon being naturally gifted without trying because he's a pitcher. His job is goal-oriented. All he has to do is get the ball over the plate. There's a lot of technique that goes into that but if he's got the skill to do it, then he's got the skill. He's not being judged on the precise placement of his fingers on the ball's stitching. If he can get it in the catcher's glove, he wins. Regardless of how he makes that happen.

Gymnastics is a cutthroat industry that's more artistry than objective. It's judged on technique by extremely unpleasable dicks who will throw a fit if they see so much as a bra strap sticking out of a leotard. You can't just drop in and go on pure physical strength alone. That's like saying, "I'm naturally graceful so I just started doing spur-of-the-moment ballet performances." That's. Not. How. That works.

There are plenty of athletic activities you could have given your Girl Goku character. Ultimate Distance Runner. Ultimate Weight Lifter. Ultimate Street Brawler. Things where a character being naturally strong but having no patience for training or routine would make sense. Hell, you name-drop parkour in her backstory; why not make her Ultimate Parkour?

Instead, you chose gymnastics. A field where physical ability only matters insomuch as it helps you carry out your well-rehearsed and thoroughly practiced routine, which is judged primarily on technique and not on how high you can jump.

And then you gave her gigantic tits that are constantly falling out of her shirt because she doesn't wear any kind of support whatsoever, and barely even buttons up her top. As a character design choice for the master of a field where having large, unrestrained breasts inhibit the ability for athletes to progress beyond a certain point.

The fact that Akane doesn't give a shit and just lets her ladies fly fits well with the idea they seem to be going with here: A female shonen bro who's socially uninhibited and coasting on naturally gifted physical superiority. Girl Goku barely even notices that her tits are out. It fits the personality archetype.

But it's a bizarre character choice for a gymnast. And it's made weirder by how much of her backstory is about being sexually harassed and assaulted. She tells an anecdote about this time her weirdo stepdad wanted her to serve food without panties and how she refused to do it. But she also doesn't care if her tits fall out of her barely-closed top whenever she gets excited.

If you want her to be the fanservice lady, sure. I'm just saying it's weird that the fanservice lady's backstory is about how much it sucks to be groped and harassed all the time. And that her well-endowed chest clashes with her Talent background which in turn clashes with the rest of her backstory and personality.

It's also weird that she doesn't have an ounce of muscle tone on her body. She's as skinny as any of the other girls. In stark contrast to Sakura Ogami's ripped physique, Akane is built like Junko Enoshima. A skinny hourglass frame to accentuate her fanservice lady appeal. She's given some strong poses in her sprites, but her body could easily be mistaken for any of the other girls in the group.

Not being super ripped does make sense for a gymnast. But, as noted, certain other attributes of hers certainly don't. And also, she's not trying to be a gymnast. She just does that on the side. She wants to be a fighter. Sakura Ogami is what Akane actually styles herself after. So why doesn't she look like it?

And on the topic of her fighting: Okay. Like. You made this character whose defining character traits are a bottomless appetite and an equally bottomless battle-lust. And then you made her trash.

Akane's actual fighting ability seems to be summed up simply as "She tries". She makes an effort. Never gets anywhere. Never wins a fight. She just constantly loses to Nekomaru, to Monokuma, to Sakura herself in some of the bonus side content. Her career is an endless string of L's. The one time she wins a fight is against Nagito, who isn't even trying to defend himself.

She's not so much a badass fighter lady as she is enthusiastic about losing. She's written like the shonen hero's lady sidekick. And. Like. That's her whole thing.

You made a female character who is defined by her love of fighting and then immediately put her next to a male character who can effortlessly defeat her and then explain to her why she's trash at the only thing she does.

In a battle anime, this would be the setup for Akane to work hard, master her art, surpass Nekomaru, and then kick a big bad villain's teeth in. But this is not a battle anime. So getting beat up by Nekomaru and then getting beat up by Monokuma is all she gets. She just sucks at her one thing, she never gets a chance to surpass the guy who's better than her at it, and that's all she gets to be.

There was a bit of that to Sakura as well, but it was just in her backstory. It wasn't what defined her role within the plot itself. But for Akane, it's what defines her role within the plot itself. Being too weak to surpass her male counterpart at her main skill is Akane's actual plotline.

It's honestly aggravating how misused Akane is. She's a poorly conceived and poorly designed rare example of a female version for an archetype dominated by male characters, whose story is about how bad she is at measuring up to men in her field. And it's absolutely wild that we got her from the same series that just gave us Sakura last game.

I love this character.

I just wish the creators cared even a little bit about her when they were making her.

She'd embarked on this journey all by herself, and yet Sonia didn't mind too much. When she'd asked Chiaki, Akane, and Mikan if they'd like to accompany her, she'd been told there was a gaming tournament, siblings to look after, and wounds to treat, in that precise order. Maybe it was too common for them, something not worth marveling over, being native to Japan and being immersed in the popular culture since they were young.

But for Sonia, the shopping mall was nothing short of a marvel. It stood tall in the busy district of Towa City, resembling something of a metallic cylinder that glinted in the light and had an all-too-familiar sign indicating that it was a pilgrimage of young people everywhere. And the inside...

No less than nine floors, plus two basement levels, home to fashion and trending culture items of various styles. From the oversized athletic wear she'd spotted on the street to delicate chiffon and lace dresses in pastel shades to full and frilly skirts and dresses not unlike what Celestia Ludenberg wore on campus, it was all too easy to spend an afternoon lost, browsing the dozens upon dozens of boutiques that called the iconic mall home. Sonia had never seen anything like it, if the amount of bags that hung off her arm were any indication. The Royal Family valued premier designers and quiet luxury: logos were few and far between, everything was elegant, understated, made of the best materials and often designed and tailored to the body. And while her wardrobe suited a princess, she stood out in a rather uncomfortable way amongst her Hope's Peak peers when uniforms weren't required.

But she was determined to change that. As long as her parents never found out about her cheap, fast fashion: wearing it at home was out of the question but here? Thousands of kilometers from Novoselic Castle? She'd happily indulged in ruffled blouses, plaid skirts, sundresses, and an array of accessories. Sonia had been hemming and hawing over two different brown hairbows when she saw someone familiar out of the corner of her eye: short, blonde, and often a sour or sarcastic attitude.

She supposed it was in line with his talent: she knew something of what it was to inherit a family empire, and needing to mold one's self into what was required to lead it.

"Kuzuryu-san?" She asked, her smile broadening as she gave him a slight wave and approached him: a store full of women's accessories wasn't exactly where she'd expected to find Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, but Sonia was delighted nevertheless. "Wow, it is lovely to see you outside of class! What brings you to the shopping mall?" Perhaps, she thought, he was on a mission for a gift for Peko Pekoyama: she was fond of long, loose hair ribbons that she braided and tied into her style directly, as opposed to the clip-in bows and and hairbands Sonia favored.

Like the two she held in her hand. She chuckled, holding them up for him to see. "Look! The school insists that we choose neutral-colored accessories to go with our brown uniforms, but I do not think they can object to these! They are so cute, I have trouble choosing!" Both brown pre-tied bows were meant to clip into her hair, but one had a molded metal button design featuring a werewolf and the other, a brown and black bat. Were they set up for Halloween or simply a creepy goth style? She hadn't been sure, but she'd been immediately drawn to them.

I wanna be where the Ultimates are. Hajime's definitely a fish out of water. And as with Shuichi, our main protags get princess songs.

7. Hiyoko Sayonji - When I Am Older (Frozen 2)

Well, I couldn't give her I Know Things Now from Into the Woods, so please accept this as a substitute. Growing up is hard, and even more so when all your friends keep getting murdered.

8. Kazuichi Souda - Fixer Upper (Frozen)

Poor Kazuichi. He's trying his best, damn it.

9. Ibuki Mioda - Trashin' the Camp (Tarzan)

One, this song is pure joyful chaos, just like Ibuki. Two, I'm pretty sure she's made music with weirder techniques than smashing pottery.

10. Mahiru Koizumi - Almost There (The Princess and the Frog)

Like Tiana, Mahiru is hardworking, optimistic, and completely over the men surrounding her.

11. Mikan Tsumiki - Mother Knows Best (Tangled)

There may not be any actual moms around, but I'm pretty sure this is what Mikan hears in her brain at all times.

12. Nagito Komaeda - Waiting on a Miracle (Encanto)

Unlike Hajime in his separate world, Nagito is a part of the family, but his opinion of his 'useless talent' keeps him on the sidelines, trapped in adoration for the talented while fucked up about his own place.

13. Nekomaru Nidai - One Last Hope (Hercules)

Phil's methods might be a little different than Nekomaru's, but the love for their athletes is the same.

14. Peko Pekoyama - Let Me Be Good to You (The Great Mouse Detective)

Okay, Peko wouldn't be caught dead doing a burlesque number (not sober anyways), but it's also at its core a song about serving (in some capacity) an emotionally constipated criminal bad boy, and well, Fuyupeko for life.

15. Sonia Nevermind - With a Smile and a Song (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)

The Ultimate Princess gets the original Disney Princess song. There's been many princesses since Snow White, but some things are just universal.

16. Teruteru Hanamura - Be Our Guest (Beauty and the Beast)

I'm not going to lie, this was almost Les Poissons, but Be Our Guest won out in the end. Lumiere is definitely the kind of smooth Teruteru thinks himself as.

This one was definitely harder, but still super fun. I've already got ideas for Trigger Happy Havoc.

Disney I want songs for each V3 character, go!

I got this a few days ago and I've been ruminating on it. I think I've finally settled on them? Plus notes on why I picked that song.

Here's the rules: Has to be from an official Disney Animated Classic (no Pixar, live action, or straight to vid sequels). Must occur within the run time of animation (no songs that only appear in the credits, ala True to Your Heart from Mulan). Only one song can be used from a particular film.

1. Angie Yonaga - Give a Little Whistle (Pinocchio)

Have you ever seen Jiminy Cricket and Atua in the same place? Think about it.

2. Gonta Gokuhara - The Bare Necessities (The Jungle Book)

Optimistic, joyous, and appreciative of all of life's moments, even if they are very small.

3. Himiko Yumeno - The Next Right Thing (Frozen 2)

If there was a DRV3 stage musical, this would be the number she does at the end of Trial 3. It's literally perfect.

4. Kaede Akamatsu - Good Company (Oliver and Company)

The scene with this song in the movie is literally a piano lesson, and it's about being friends and having faith in that. How could I not?

5. Kaito Momota - Go the Distance (Hercules)

Oh, I want to be a hero because I feel like I don't belong anywhere and I want to be strong enough to give my friends good hugs? Herc and Kaito are both beautiful himbos.

6. Kiibo - Strangers Like Me (Tarzan)

I mean, Keebs is real Pinocchio sometimes, but I started crying imagining him to this song. He's so earnest and I love that for him.

7. Kirumi Tojo - Very Good Advice (Alice in Wonderland)

Classic, underappreciated, and sad as fuck.

8. Kokichi Ouma - The World's Greatest Criminal Mind (The Great Mouse Detective)

Look, this song is just fun and chaotic and delighted by its own mischief. There's so many ways you can go with Kokichi, but I had to pick this one for sheer giggles.

9. Korekiyo Shinguji - Never Smile at a Crocodile (Peter Pan)

JUST READ THE FUCKING LYRICS.

10. Maki Harukawa - Reflection (Mulan)

It's cliche. It's also true.

11. Miu Iruma - The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers (The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh)

Kind of unhinged and still somehow endearing. Miu Iruma is bounchy flouncy fun fun fun fun fun.

12. Rantaro Amami - Thomas O'Malley Cat (The Aristocats)

The fucking swagger. The worldliness. The feet that can't stop moving. (Of course Rantaro is my favorite character. I adored that cat.)

13. Ryoma Hoshi - Not in Nottingham (Robin Hood)

For the love of god, somebody hug that man.

14. Shuichi Saihara - This Wish (Wish)

If The Next Right Thing is Trial 3 of the DRV3 Disney musical, This Wish is the end of Trial 6. This is Shuichi standing up and telling the villain that they're not going to give in to despair, honoring Kaede's wish with his own. Plus, it's a princess song. I gotta give the main protag the princess song.

15. Tenko Chabashira - Surface Pressure (Encanto)

Tenko doesn't have a complex about being strong and defending people, what gave you that idea?

16. Tsumugi Shirogane - Mad Madam Mim (The Sword in the Stone)

Using your powers of shapeshifting to delight in causing despair and gloom? Can't relate.

This was a wild three hours of research and spreadsheets, and it was delightful fun to do.

Facts about ibusaki, mito-aldini and hayama family please

The Ibusakis

The Ibusakis are a very wholesome family. They settled down together early, and were the first married couple of the 92nd generation. Shun proposed when they were twenty-two, and they were married before the year was over.

No surprise, Shun is actually very good at woodworking, and he made quite a bit of the family furniture — including the kitchen table and porch swing — himself. He also made Ryoko a nice jewelry box for their anniversary one year.

Shun and Ryoko are a well-respected couple in their community. They have a family restaurant — known for its smoked dishes and fermented foods — that everyone in the neighborhood loves. Ryoko is only in the restaurant some of the time because she’s also working with her family’s fermented goods business and her own local Sakaki Sake brand.

Whenever there’s an event going on in the town, like a festival or concert, they always help out by providing high-quality food and alcohol (and pestering Yuki and Zenji — who they convinced to buy the house across the street from them — into getting involved too).

As soon as they’re old enough to walk, their two sons are out in the backyard, helping Shun cut wood for smoking. (They would both enjoy this chore a lot more if it didn’t take place so early in the morning.)

The brothers Ibusaki are very enterprising youths. They would often spend their breaks from school selling snacks and doing odd jobs for adults in the neighborhood so they could save up for whatever they wanted — designer sneakers, game systems, electric guitars, you name it. They developed entrepreneurial streaks at a very young age, and by the time each of them gets to Totsuki, they have an established side-hustle.

The Mito-Aldinis

The Mito-Aldinis are constantly living their best lives as a family. Isami and Ikumi enjoy fulfilling careers and lives of luxury, but they’re nowhere near as busy and stressed as people like Souma and Erina.

These two know how to enjoy their wealth.They are forever chilling by the pool at their California home, sipping Dom Pérignon and eating A5 beef. They have his-and-hers Lamborghinis (Ikumi’s is red and Isami’s is black) parked side by side in their huge garage...and they have their eyes on a rose gold one for their daughter when she’s old enough. Takumi finds them sooo obnoxious at times, but Megumi tells him not to be too judgmental.

After they first got married, the couple divided their time between Tuscany and California, but they made a more permanent move to Tokyo when their daughter, Isabella, was about nine years old. The move took place because Ikumi was taking over as head of the Mito Group.

Isami gets along really well with Ikumi’s parents — even her father who tends to be difficult — and they spend most holidays and such with the Mito side of the family. They often take out one of the family yachts and spend a few days at sea. Even though Isami is a softie at heart, he knows how to talk business and smoke cigars with Ikumi’s father. The old man finds Bella prodigious at everything he values (cooking, math, negotiation, athletics), so it’s nothing but good vibes when the extended family gets together.

Isami is better at a lot of domestic tasks than Ikumi because she always had paid professionals to do certain things for her. When Bella was young, her father would always style her hair before school and ice skating competitions and sew her costumes back together if they were ever damaged.

Ikumi and Bella are both extremely active, and they always charm Isami into going running or biking or hiking with them. He can never manage to put on his winter weight properly with the two of them around.

The Arato-Hayamas

The Arato-Hayamas are an extremely erudite family. Out of the entire 92nd generation, Hisako and Akira are the couple with the most combined university degrees (five in total). Their kids — and their friends kids — tend to view them as the smartest adults they know.

In a few of their residences, they have his-and-hers studies with bookshelves that stretch from ceiling to floor, as well as robust family libraries in the living rooms. They were the type of parents who read to their kids every night before bed when they were little; sometimes they’d read fairy tales, and sometimes they’d read journal articles. It depended on what mood they were in.

Akira features some of Akane’s paintings in his restaurants because they are quite good, and even if they weren’t, he would still be a really proud father.

When Hisashi — their youngest — is studying at his science academy in preparation for entering a pre-med track at university, Hisako cedes her medical library to him. She helps him study anatomy and physiology and makes stacks and stacks of index cards for him. She’s absolutely thrilled at the idea of there being another Dr. Arato (well, technically Dr. Hayama) in the family.

Even after being married for years, Akira and Hisako can never keep their hands off each other. They are forever ducking into corridors and making out when the kids aren’t looking. Even though they seem very reserved when they’re out in public, all of their children have caught them sucking face at least once.

Jun was always very shy and hesitant about calling the Arato-Hayama kids her grandchildren. When Gin and Jouichirou first referred to them as such, she nearly short-circuited because technically she wasn’t really Akira’s adoptive mother since her advisor Professor Hayama was the one with the resources at the time; she felt she didn’t really have a right to the title. However, all of the kids slip and call her “grandma” every now and then — Junko does it more or less consistently — and it warms her from head to toe every time.

My OC Fallout girls: My already introduced sorta-Sole, a too-pure-for-the-Wasteland medic Lone, a young roboticist with a daredevil streak, a long-frozen early experimental subject turned suave vigilante, and an amnesiac psyker who has disappeared into the identity of a mostly-benevolent ancient witch. DM me with questions or line requests, I’m wide open.

Leonora/Widow: A Sole Survivor, or more specifically a Sole Survivor’s surviving wife. Health damaged by Kellogg’s bullet, which hit her in the chest, she’s coping with trauma from her escape and the loss of her family with an iron will and a lot of bitterness. She’s an angry, vengeful sharpshooter who thinks she’s tragically outlived all her enemies--and is headed for a roaring rampage of revenge once she discovers she’s wrong. However, she also has a nagging conscience, and is incredibly loyal to her friends--as well as having a deep sense of outrage about what the war has done to people. She can’t turn off her empathy, and that may end up saving her from a self-destructive path.

Julia: A Lone Wanderer, who was training as a medic when she had to escape her Vault. Kind, thoughtful, reasonable, and dedicated to advancing medical care for all sapients in the Wasteland. However, like Leonora, she has her own problems: she’s largely a noncombatant, capable of self-defense but hesitant to harm others unless necessary. She relies instead on charisma, which she has a lot of, her uncanny affinity with animals, and her Companions and many allies. After helping to bring clean water to the region, she returned to Underworld to work under Doctor Barrows, becoming a help, and something of a curiosity, to the locals. Hopeless romantic. Misses the hell out of her dad. Generally pure.

Akane: A playful, mischievous, sometimes heroic former street kid, new to Diamond City, who works as a local courier while learning everything she can about robotics. One of her major goals is to make a splash by repairing everyone’s favorite noodlebot so that he can speak more languages--and take more diverse orders. She speaks some Japanese, and is one of the few people in town who has realized that poor Takahashi has been reduced to despondently asking for people’s order in Japanese and nothing else. Big-hearted Akane has promised to help him. That is, if she doesn’t break her neck first, during her wild, daring, parkour-fueled, modified-eyebot-riding drive to become the fastest delivery person in the Commonwealth.

Morgan: An early “popsicle” experiment stored in Vault 111 for further testing when war became immanent, Morgan was actually frozen decades before the war. She volunteered for experimentation after the brutal murder of her ten year old son, Eric. A career military woman originally from Great Britain, she is the descendant of Holocaust survivors, something which fuels her anger against the Commonwealth’s injustices just as her son’s death does. The experiments done before her freezing were agonizing, and left her with some strange side effects--including the colorless eyes sported by some ghouls, and a strange relationship with radiation. An elegant, very athletic woman in her forties, she’s got a lot of charm and wisdom, and can come off as a friendly, suave hedonist--or turn on a dime when it’s time for violence. Morgan is a sharpshooter like Widow, but also has the mettle and training for a close-up fight. She longs to take on trainees, lead a team, and use them to make the Commonwealth safer.

Danica: A Psyker, who practices witchcraft and herbalism and refers to herself as a witch. Her powers are actually psychokinetic in nature, and fairly impressive, allowing her to more than hold her own in a fight. She believes that she has existed since well before the war, and that her powers are natural. However, this is, sadly, a delusion. Danica is a result of one of the Master’s experiments, and managed to escape before being fitted with a nullifier back when she was a young girl. Being injected (in her pineal gland, leaving a small round scar on her forehead) as a child instead of an adult actually helped her adjust to the changes more successfully than many others, and she came through the process relatively rational. Having escaped, she latched onto old family stories of witches and magic to create a new identity from her shattered memories. She now presents a surface of sanity that actually compensates for profound amnesia and rage issues. She doesn't like to talk about her past, and has no idea why she was so eager to make the dangerous trip all the way across the country just to get away from the West Coast. Unfortunately for Danica, the overuse of her powers threatens her mental stability, which can lead to episodes of destructive rage. She has thus become adept at lower-expenditure uses of her ability, such as sabotage or using it in conjunction with explosives. A drinker, moody and emotionally isolated but like Widow, subject to a nagging conscience, and loyal to her own. Tends to hide her nature from normal humans.

Frost: An escaped synth with a complicated background. Formerly an assistant in weapons development who focused on ballistics, and who was “reassigned” after the program was discontinued in favor of lasers. She was sent to be erased, reconfigured and tossed into the Commonwealth on a kill and replace mission...but mysteriously, her memories were not erased. Sent to replace Scarlett in Diamond City, she went there, saw the ridiculous cuteness that is Scarlett and Travis, and simply refused to go through with it. Instead she got a new face, took on a new identity and has been hiding out in the Commonwealth while she figures out what to do with herself. A tinkerer, gunbunny and roboticist, she ended up Railroad and Minutemen aligned during her playthrough but could end up anywhere in RP that doesn’t want to re-enslave or destroy her.

29.12.19: Kazetsuyo Episode 19: The Moment of Release

“I like protagonists, but I also like the people who lead them. They don’t want to be shown kindness. An athlete wants to win.”

Akane has never seen himself as the protagonist of a story. He’s fantasised about it, of course, that’s why he’s so into manga, but in manga, the protagonist's story is always inspiring, exciting, heart-racing. The protagonist, who has greatness thrust upon them, embarks on an adventure that's larger-than-life. They’ve got friends who believe in them and root for them. They struggle and triumph against insurmountable odds because they never give up. They are strong. Akane's nothing like that. His life is normal and unexciting. He’s weak and lacks ambition, and he avoids bothersome things and chooses the easy way out. Surely, his is not the story of a protagonist.

Yet Haiji saw potential in him. He practically demanded it of him, and selfishly dragged him into running against his will and pushed him to go along with his outrageous plan. And just like that, Akane’s found himself doing things he could not have imagined himself doing a year ago. He’s running 5km, 10… then 20. He’s struggled against insurmountable odds that he’s somehow managed to overcome. He’s even found teammates who recognise and acknowledge him, friends who are waiting for him at the finish line. Friends who make him want to do his best. And now, he’s living the dream running in the ekiden. Is his not an inspiring story, an adventure that’s larger-than-life too?

Haiji has never once doubted Akane. He’s chosen him to be part of his team since the very beginning, to be a protagonist of this great story. And because Haiji believes in him, Akane’s now able to see it in himself and respond to his expectations. He is the protagonist of his story, one who is strong and determined to win.

Other thoughts and muses:

I still can’t form coherent thoughts about Haiji because TEARS but I really meant it when I said Akane’s words saved that boy. I wonder if I would ever get unstuck on this... guess I’ll just cry about it some more.

Musa’s run in the novel was a little more heartfelt. It talks about his personal experiences of being a foreigner in Japan, and how he’s aware that he’s not always welcomed and the prejudices and discrimination he faces. But just as Fujioka said, athletes acknowledge each other as equals on the race ground. There’s no discrimination, and they all share one soul and the spirit of competition. Musa feels this “freedom” when he’s running in the ekiden, and he feels the people on the streets cheering for him and this sense of belonging. If he had merely just been an exchange student studying at Kansei, he would never have been able to experience this feeling. That’s why he was swept up in the moment and forgot about pacing himself.

Also, because Musa overexerted himself, he actually passed out when he finished his run and King was in a panic cry. In the anime it’s mentioned that he managed to pass seven people, which I guess means it’s similar to the novel where he pulled Kansei’s ranking up by seven (20th to 13th) position. Good to know I still kept receipts about their results!

She wasn’t sure how pregnancy tests worked or how to read the results it produced, so you had to make sure you explained things thoroughly with her. So a positive result means … that she could eat as much as she wanted, and use the excuse that she was eating for two! Which also means … that she is pregnant!

- At first, Akane was extremely fired up and determined to maintain a robust and athletic figure during her pregnancy, but it came to you as no surprise when she abandoned her routines and schedules. Despite what it seemed though, Akane was actually concerned for her unborn child, and the consequences and possible strain her child might endure if she were to train as she usually would.

- You decide to consult her closest friend, Nekomaru Nidai, the Ultimate Team Manager. The two of you were close, and you trusted him to figure out the best way to encourage and train Akane, as to lift her fighting spirit as well as perpetuate your unborn child’s safety.

- Once her new training with Nekomaru became a regular, Akane was back to her normal self, with occasional mood swings. Her dispositions were now amplified versions of what they once were before her pregnancy, and you would always try your absolute best to assist her in whatever way you could.

- Because she has had seven younger siblings, all of who looked up to her for guidance, she does indeed have experience with ‘hungry small things.’ The two of you enjoy spending your time coming up with names for your child, and she reassures you that it’ll be a name that she will never forget.

Chiaki Nanami

- Chiaki was surprisingly calm when the home pregnancy test came out positive. She released a sigh of relief, as the two of you have been trying for a child for quite a while now. She decides that she wishes to surprise you with the news in a unique way, and that way was to make you sit through hours of a farming simulation roleplaying game until the two of you married and had a child. You ask (tiredly but amusingly) what the meaning of this was, but she simply smiles and asks what you wished to name your long awaited child. And you knew.

- The Ultimate Gamer became much sleepier than usual now that she was pregnant, going so far as to fall asleep during meals and afternoon walks and nighttime outings. You had to constantly be vigilant to ensure that she does not fall asleep whilst crossing the street or whilst speaking to someone. You never left her side when the two of you were out.

- You found it hilarious whenever she would use her protruding tummy as a ‘table’ for her bowls of snacks or for her drink. You always replaced whatever you took off her stomach, whether it be a cup for a sip or a bowl to get the last of the chips, and she didn’t seem to mind at all.

- The two of you diligently prepared a room for your child (she insisted that she help because she didn’t want you to do all of the work) and made sure it was well adorned with ‘helpful’ video game characters in hopes that they will guide the new player three throughout their journey.

Hiyoko Saionji

- Upon discovering that she was pregnant, Hiyoko was relieved, relieved to know that she could finally break the next child born into the family free from the mold that once imprisoned her so.

- The news was promptly passed onto you through the means of a traditional dance in combination with parts that she coordinated herself. The principal dance you recognize as the sparrow dance, also known as ‘suzume odori,’ a traditional Japanese dance based on the fluttering movements of the Eurasian tree sparrow, but as her sequence of steps and movements continued, you began to realize that she was telling a story of new beginnings through the art of dance, and you knew that you were going to be a father when she concluded the story with her hands on her stomach.

- Hiyoko requested that the two of you relocate to a secluded village in Hokkaido, and leave unbeknownst to her parents and family. She wished to raise her child in the nurturing and attentive manner in which she never received, far away from traditionalist values and views and in the quiet countryside. After saying her farewells, the two of you left the place she was born and raised. Left behind was also her title as heiress to the Saionji clan.

Ibuki Mioda

- The two of you have yet to wed, as you encouraged her to pursue her dream as a musician in earnest. You insisted that she put her dreams before you, and that you didn’t mind waiting for her for as long as she needed. This was what Ibuki had always wanted, someone as her soulmate rather than an intimate partner, and you understood that.

- But as time persisted, the two of you could not resist becoming devoted in a more amorous manner, and surely enough, the news that she was pregnant was difficult for her to digest.

- She believed that becoming pregnant and delivering a child and then raising the child meant that her dream of touring around the world and performing music for people to enjoy would be abruptly halted. It took you countless tries to calm her down and speak to her, and you made a promise to keep her dream alive.

- You began to save up money for a larger tour bus, as well as ‘on the go’ necessities that she and your child might need. You were also determined to be committed to taking care of your child in Ibuki’s place whilst still ensuring that she has quality time with the child as well. You became her manager and as manager, you lessened the performances and tours that she would partake in, but not so much so that she would miss out on her dream.

- It was a wonderful and satisfying sight to see Ibuki perform so exuberantly and vivaciously on stage with her round tummy. She performed without a care in the world and as if her child gave her the strength to. Before every performance, she would always give you a shoutout and thank you for everything you have done to preserve her dream.

- Not too long after, the two of you finally got married, and continued as a traveling musician, manager, and soon to be rock star baby.

Mahiru Koizumi

- The two of you led a rather normal and tranquil life in a modernized, always photogenic apartment, filled to the brim with various types of succulents and flowers and plants. As a part of her career, Mahiru would take daily walks downtown, to the park, to the rose garden, to museums, and any other scenic areas available and close by, and whenever you could, you would tag along.
