Street Fighter 3 - HYPER BOMB!!!

Last one among my 3 recently finished artworks I worked upon at the same time.

So, this is my own take on the last bit of the "Hyper Bomb" move that Alex performs in the Street Fighter 3\5 games as his signature Command Grab move.

But wait, isn't Alex a young buff gymbro in the games?

Yes, yes he is, but I already painted him twice in the past as he looks in game, so I decided to give this artwork a twist: Alex is not the canonical one from the games, but instead of him, there is Alexia, his genderswapped counterpart!

A signature of canon Alex in the game is his voluminous bodybuilder chest, so I had to compensate by painting Alexia with a huge womanly chest as well - the excuse for her having it so big, is that Alexia drinks lot of protein enriched milk :)

Of course I had to carefully redraw the corporatural Alexei's proportions to turn them a woman's, while still keeping some of the characteristics of canon Alex, such as the huge shoulders and sculpted abdominal muscles - muscles that I painted as fatter than the male canon counterpart, because Alexei is still a woman after all, it is unhealthy and unfanction for a woman to have too much low of a physiological fat percentage.

The one that is going to be slammed on the ground is of course Elena, the Kenyan capoeira dancer always feautured on Street Fighter 3. Elena quite tall, she is 183 centimeters with a slender bodytype, while Alex\Alexei is 195 cm but buff, so I thought she would have been perfect as a foil to Alexei's burlier body.

The setting is some anonymous slum in New York city where there are buildings that are partially wrecked down by demolition balls.

Really loved painting this, and I think it was the right call to have Elena twisting toward the viewer as she is held by Alexia as she both are falling to the ground!

Composition Break Down

Let's break down a panel of Brute Creation. This panel looks simple, but subtle composition choices going on. I'll walk you though it- JD

First up I've thrown a thirds grid over the panel. We've got Pine talking into the radio right on a grid line marking a third. Placing him right on the line will draw the viewer's eye to the character. Myka is off center, favouring the screen right third line. Moving her slightly towards this line keeps her from being dead center in frame. Things dead center frame will look... well, dead. It's a good thing to try and avoid, unless it makes sense narratively. Generally things on thirds lines, or their intersections will draw the eye. There's more to the rule of thirds than just this, but it can be found online with a quick search if you're interested.

The general shape the characters make is triangular. Triangles are a really strong compositional shape. They're dynamic, and keep the viewer's eye bouncing between their points and in frame. There are several triangles repeated in the panel, brown panel wall, the tip of the wind gauge fin, and the negative space behind the panel wall. Repeating shapes can also unify the composition.

Leading lines, lead your eyes through the composition. Using your character's eye direction is a surefire way to establish a leading line. In this case Pine's eyes drop down to his suspender we follow that line to the bottom of the frame and across to Myka's hair up to her eyes and then to the wind gauge fin, which points us back towards Pine. It's a circle that loops the eye around frame. Pine's screen right arm also leads back to Myka's head.

This one is pretty straight forward. The space around the characters is asymmetrical making it more interesting visually. This is kind of a repetition of keeping things off dead center.

For lack of a better word I've called this a frame bumper. The idea is that the frame bumper is anything that keeps the viewer's eyes from leaving frame, bouncing it back to focus in frame. Pine's head breaks the panel frame here, leading the eye into frame from the previous panel. BUT it also counter balances that strong directional line the wind gauge makes and bumps it back into the frame. His eye direction helps focus the viewer's eyes back into frame also.

So there you have it! Even a seemingly simple panel can have a lot going on compositionally. Hope you found the breakdown helpful. ok let me have my smart ass moment for once and use my 7,5 years of art schools

the scene that got me in "ooOHOUH 🫵" and wanting to kiss cinematographer on the mouth was this one:

all of the boys are out of school and as usual heading to snack stands. chian is in the middle of the scene between choices/ options.

this scene is amazing use of rule of thirds (i love using this one when i work on my artworks lmao; to those unfamiliar it's basically a composition rule based around golden ratio and in order to draw your eyes to important stuff you put the important stuff more less were the line cross (so for example faces/eyes) but also you divide scene to fit in those rectangles to create nice and balanced compostion - see the picture below; i generally do the rule of thirds by hand/eye so they aren't very correct but i was complemented on nice compostion multiple times so)

and also cleaver use of red as accent colours to draw our eyes even more

also rather simple note but amount of layering is 🤌‍

3 layers + background may not seem like a lot but when watch dramas and are a cinematography junkie like me you will notice how many dramas will choose just 1 layer + background (ofc not every scene needs endless amount of layers but especially in gelboys it adds to the overall maximalism of the whole series).

another scene that also caught my eye during ep 3 was this one:

rule of thirds and the sheer dominance of lines is just amazing.

soon after we get this scene:

baabin being obvious third wheel. again we got rule of thirds to draw our attention to baabin, despite 4mod and chian being there. (extra points for the red double decker in background :P it very much wasn't intentional the way they filmed all of it but it draws our attention to baabin even more).

and i really liked this scene too, it looks really nice for same reasons i mentioned earlier

That's right, we're back to remind you that this party's still happening and everyone's still invited. I'm once again your gracious host @chaos-fantazy, ready to leave last year behind me and do everything in my power to make this our biggest AU contest yet. That's because, for the first time, we will be running a second contest in parallel to our usual comic contest—an AU character design contest, the perfect way for you to participate even if you don't have the time to write a full comic. Spearheading the judge panel for that contest is @creatoonz, Flaredust and r2d2kx100. That contest will begin on Saturday, May 10th, about a month from now—but you can go ahead and start your preparations now!

Huh? What? AU Contest???

This contest is dedicated to celebrating how this fandom told stories to each other when it was first starting out—sprite comics, which, as their name implies, are a web comic that uses sprites rather than drawn artwork as the main means of depicting its subjects. They're commonly done to produce fan comics for video games, and Undertale is no exception—many prolific AUs, including @invertedfate, began as sprite comics.

Like a game jam, this contest invites people to produce Undertale/Deltarune AU comics (And design AU characters!). Being a contest, there are prizes and glory on the line for the winners, but in the end, what it's really about is the chance for people to get creative. If you’ve ever had an idea for a story you want to tell using these games’ characters or setting, but could never justify dedicating time to telling it…this is the excuse you need!

After last year, to minimize potential complications, I've been working with the judge panel to establish our prize pool ahead of time:

The character design contest is slated to have four categories; the winner of each category will have their winning character illustrated by one of our judges. (Who will draw which exactly is still a bit up in the air, but they'll definitely be available!)

The second- and third-place comics will receive an illustration from either G0at0ad or r2d2kx100 of a character of their choice, with simple background.

The grand prize for the winning comic will be a full-scale illustration from Starlight, complete with a background and up to two characters—giving you the opportunity to see one of your favorite scenes from the comic brought to life!

Sounds cool! How do I participate?

I'm glad you asked! Our official Discord server is not only the proper avenue to send a submission, it also contains all the official rules regarding the production and submission thereof.

The character design contest begins on May 10th and will run up through the end of June—slightly overlapping with the comic contest, which will start at the beginning of June and end at the end of August. I'll make announcement posts here when each contest begins and close to when they're ending, too.

"The prominence of female divinity in Minoan culture might well have reflected the prominence of Minoan women in daily life. In Shang dynasty China, the authority of goddesses such as the Eastern and Western Mothers was echoed to some degree by the authority of women in elite society and even the army. Fu Jing and Fu Hao, wives of King Wu Ding, led men into battle before being honoured in death with monumental tombs containing the victims of human sacrifice, battle axes, knives and arrowheads. In Egypt, many of the images of Hatshepsut were destroyed or defaced after her death when her name was removed from the official list of rulers by her male successors, who sought to claim direct descent from her husband. It is possible that images of powerful Minoan women were subject to similar mistreatment.

While there is no evidence that Minoan women ruled in the same manner as Hatshepsut, or joined battle like the women of Shang China, the sheer number of artworks depicting them centrally placed and on a larger scale than men has prompted some historians to speculate that Minoan society was matriarchal or matrilineal. ‘Neopalatial Crete,’ writes one scholar, ‘presents the best candidate for a matriarchy – if one ever existed.’ There is nothing to say that the position of Minoan women was in any way secondary to that of men. 

Minoan women were certainly not confined to the weaving room. Sculptures show them playing lyres, flutes and zithers, sashaying in flounced chevron-patterned skirts and raising their arms in the air in ecstasy. In the ‘Grandstand Fresco’ from Knossos the women are more carefully delineated in paint than the men. Each woman has her own identity, her own style. The women appear to occupy the main rooms of the palace while the men congregate as an anonymous mass beyond. Women depicted seated – a sign of divinity or authority – are often being approached by men or animals. A highly enigmatic fresco at Thera (Santorini), for example, features a woman wearing large hoop earrings, a snake in her hair, and a neck-chain of ducks, sitting on a dais with a griffin beside her while a blue monkey pays her court.

 On a gold ring, a female deity, we may presume, is seated beneath a tree, where she receives flowers from two women. A smaller figure of a man with a double-headed axe over his head hovers between them.  By depicting the man beneath the axe, and on a smaller scale than the women, the engraver of the ring perhaps hoped to convey that he was a divine vision, almost a thought-bubble, originating in one of the female worshipper’s heads. Trees, as Arthur Evans recognised, were sacred in Minoan culture, and were perhaps believed to be capable of inspiring divine visions in those who honoured them. Such artworks contribute to the picture of Minoan women exerting considerable religious authority in the palace complexes and society more widely. 

Minoan women also played a crucial role in ritual. The early Minoans sometimes interred their dead twice by exhuming the bones of their family members and resettling them later in jars. The more usual custom, however, was to bury the dead in chamber tombs or stone beehive-shaped ‘tholos’ tombs, clay sarcophagi or, in the case of infants, under the floorboards of the home. The colourful paintings on a rare limestone sarcophagus from Hagia Triada, circa 1400 bc, show three men carrying young animals and a model boat to the deceased, who stands in front of his tomb, ready to receive his provisions for the afterlife. There are also three women present, the first of whom pours a libation into a cauldron placed between two upright axes mounted by birds; the second carries further vessels; the third – darker skinned like the men and thus possibly of lower social status – has a lyre. On the other side of the sarcophagus the women assist in the sacrifice of a bull on an altar. Other wall paintings show women involved in rituals of their own involving blood.  A fresco from Akrotiri features a group of women, one of whom sits beside a sunken room or ‘lustral basin’ with a bleeding foot. A tree also bleeds. It is possible that lustral basins were used for purification by women during or after menstruation."

YYH Tarot Deck Project - Information

"The meaning of TAROT is any of a set of usually 78 playing cards including 22 pictorial cards used for fortune-telling."

What is this project?

Over the course of a year, we will create a deck of 78s Yu Yu Hakusho themed tarot cards. Each artist chooses as many cards as they'd like to create. At the end, if the project succeeds, we will look to print the cards and make them into an actual deck you can purchase!

The project is still ongoing and sign ups are still open to those who would like to participate! Details are in the sign up form and any questions can be directed to this blog's ask box.

Rules regarding the project.

1. Cards must contain only characters from the Yu Yu Hakusho universe, meaning manga, anime, movies, video games, or any other supplementary materials. No OCs or cross-overs are allowed as this is a YYH deck only. 2. Characters can repeat but we encourage you to branch out into minor characters as much as possible! 3. Art can be created in any medium you choose, can be digital or traditional. If your art piece is traditional, please be sure you have access to a scanner and that you can take good scans of your work. Photos of the artwork will not suffice. 4. Artwork must be original and not reused from old works. Use of references is encouraged but please be mindful of not tracing or copying any part of your artwork. 5. You MUST BE 18+ to join the project. 6. You must have discord to join the project.

Timeline

Cards are claimed in intervals of 10 or so, about every other month. During each claim, every artist has the chance to sign up to draw up to 2 cards total at a time. Claims open up on the first of a new month. The 14th is the first check in, during which an idea must be presented. The next check in is two weeks later, when a sketch is necessary. The third check in is 2 weeks after that, showing progress on the card(s). The deadlines are always 3 months after the last check in, with the ability to extend the deadline an additional 3 months further before the card is surrendered.

In order to sign up, you must use the above linked form and await our approval.

*If you are not approved, you can try to resubmit your application again, waiting at least 3 months. We can reconsider your application.

Once approved, you will be contacted via the contact information you provided and given a link to our Discord server where the project is being organized. Please be watchful for that message! It can take us anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to get back to you.

I got bored and decided to decipher Rodrick Heffley's music taste to close this years-long debate once and for all.

This post will be on the lengthier side, but a TLDR is attached at the end of the post if you want the basic cliff-notes.

Disclaimer: this is a dissection of the film adaptation of Rodrick rather than his source material counterpart. Comparisons to the books are welcome but irrelevant to this analysis.

Soundtrack

During the roller-rink scene in the opening of Rodrick Rules, Rodrick and Bill take over the DJ table to sabotage Greg's moves on Holly. The song they play is "Cut Throat" by the all-female heavy metal band, Kittie. Aside from Löded Diper's music, this is the only song in the series explicitly used to establish Rodrick's music taste.

However, there's many songs off of the Rodrick Rules soundtrack alone that can be reasonably assumed to fit his music profile as well — for example, those used during the party sequence.

I wouldn't doubt if one or two tracks were intended solely as crowd pleasers, but let's not rule out the entire playlist.

In order of appearance, Rodrick's party mix includes: "Heart Heart Heartbreak" by Boys Like Girls, "Electric (feat. Miss Amani)" by The DNC, "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)" by Tokyo Police Club, "Shake" by Bikini Machine, "Move Like This" by Hammerwax, and "Jump In The Line" by Karl Zéro & The Wailers.

There's additionally three other, albeit more subtle, uses of background music to nod toward Rodrick's preferences.

The first instance is during the scene in Rodrick Rules in which Greg confides in Rodrick about his embarrassment from his failed "100 Years Ago" assignment. It's so quiet that it's easy to miss without a keen ear, but "Light Love" by Free Energy plays in the background, mixed to fit in with the ambience of Rodrick's bedroom.

The second is directly before the Löded Diper band rehearsal scene (somebody farted btw), in which Frank pulls into the Heffleys' driveway. "Rock and Roll Slob" by The Boneless Ones can be heard from the garage, once again mixed as part of the ambience.

The third again utilizes The Boneless Ones' discography, and is inserted during the opening sequence of Dog Days at the municipal pool. Rodrick explains it's "time to sell some CDs" for Löded Diper, and turns on his boombox (more on this later), blaring "Miss Fresno."

With the last two points in mind, one can assume the film universe is some twisted version where Löded Diper originally wrote and performed The Boneless Ones' discography (or something closely resembling it).

Band Tees

Rodrick mostly wears seemingly thrifted or upcycled shirts and graphic tees with witty/edgy prints, but there are outliers at times. For example, there's not one, not two, but potentially so much as five moments in Dog Days that he's seen wearing merch from Dead Kennedys, The Who, and Ramones.

While most of his band tees simply include the band's logo or iconography, the latter design takes it a step further by being specific to a particular song title: "Rock 'n' Roll High School" by Ramones.

There's another moment which this may be the case, but it's purely speculative on my end. The Ramones also have a song named "I Don't Care," which is a phrase featured on one of Rodrick's shirts. It's not an explicit reference, but likely a reference nonetheless.

Room Posters

Guns N' Roses, Brutal Truth (Evolution Through Revolution), Stars (The Five Ghosts), Buried Inside (Spoils of Failure), and Decibel are the most notable.

I assume Decibel is in relation to the 70's/80's Italian punk rock band, although I can't find any association between them and this particular artwork. If not connected to them, there's a possibility it may be to the metal magazine of the same name, but I have my doubts.

In this image giving an alternate perspective to Rodrick's room, just off-screen is a Metallica poster, based on the stylization of the ending A. Beside it is a Hanson Brothers poster, which was later replaced in Rodrick Rules with a duplicate of the Stars poster for some reason.

Among his collage of Löded Diper flyers, there's Danny Echo posters as well as Denounce and Billy Talent stickers receiving the Hidden Mickey treatment (also a cameo from the iconic cheeseburger phone on the table).

Of course, there are many other pieces of memorabilia scattered across Rodrick's room, but several of them are blurry from the camera's depth of field or are seen at angles which make them difficult to read or for reverse image sites to identify. So for now, this is the best possible analysis of Rodrick's room in regards to music.

Miscellaneous

An easy-to-miss detail lies in the infamous Löded Diper van. Within the final few moments of Rodrick Rules as Rodrick drops Greg off at school (01:31:52), there's a semi-clear shot of the van's dashboard. On it are a set of stickers, including one referencing Huevos Rancheros, an instrumental rock-and-roll group from Canada.

In Dog Days, Rodrick brings a personal boombox with him to the municipal pool. Along the top is a large sticker for Street Machine, a Czech hardcore/metal band.

Cut Content

In the second studio draft of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, on page 23, scene 43, more of Rodrick's favorite artists are revealed.

The nature of this may be written off as not canon, as it was added into the script while it was still a work in progress and the posters themselves didn't make it into the final product.

What sells it to me as remaining "silent" canon though is that TOOL and Slipknot are often lumped together with Kittie (previously mentioned) as they share an overlapping fanbase. This was more prevalent during the early 2000's within the mall goth subculture, but it's remained fairly consistent for other variants of metalheads over the years too.

TLDR

To recap, the various genres across all of the bands Rodrick is canonically into include indie rock, pop rock, punk rock, hardcore punk, hard rock, industrial, thrash metal, heavy metal, nu metal, death metal, sludge metal, and grindcore.

His musical preferences are punk, rock, and metal-centric but quite broad and inclusive of countries of origin and lesser-known underground artists (some don't break even 100 monthly listeners on Spotify). This leaves the door open for endless possibilities in terms of headcanons.

He's not emo despite popular fan belief, but I still think there's a chance some of his musical leanings could cross over with bands considered emo adjacent for their presence in the community. August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada come to mind with his music taste accounted for, but that's just my headcanon.

I've since made two Spotify playlists from my findings: one being what I imagine would be Rodrick's regular rotation, and the other being an extension of his party mix. I feel I've channeled him well, since a lot of his music taste is basically mine circa 2008/2009.

Buyers will receive their artwork privately at full resolution in .PNG format. All commissions are signed and dated.

All commissions will also be posted here on my Tumblr, at a smaller resolution with a prominent additional watermark, after the buyer has received and approved the final piece. The buyer may be tagged in the post, or may choose to remain an anonymous.

Payments will be through PayPal. I will give you my PayPal once I agree to your commission. All payments are due up front in full.

Payment

After being completed, the commissioned artwork will be sent to you, the buyer, in .PNG format through email to ensure a near-lossless file. Alternate delivery methods are available upon request.

You must pay the entire price in advance, but only if we decide to go through with the commission.

Termination

You may cancel the commission at any time and receive a full refund of your payment until the commission is completed and sent. If I have already sent you the completed .PNG file of the commission, you are no longer able to request a refund for any reason. 

I may cancel the commission at any time and fully refund your payment if I feel I am being coerced into drawing something I am uncomfortable with, but I will not cancel a commission without giving several clear warnings first.

Rights

You may use the commission for any personal or educational purposes, including most social media profiles. You may repost the commission to social media or other websites as long as I am credited by clearly linking my Tumblr. You may use the commission for an icon, header, background, etc. on your personal (i.e. not business) social media profile as long as I am credited.

You may not use the commission for business purposes or profit off of it in any way, such as using it on icons/banners/promotional materials on a for-profit social media account (ex. Twitch, Etsy, official business Twitter accounts), uploading it to merchandise printing sites (ex. Redbubble, Cafe Press, TeePublic), tracing/spoofing the design in your own creative works, incorporating it into a larger creative project (ex. a book, game, or comic), etc. You may not license the personal/educational usage rights to third parties. You may not edit or repurpose the commission in any way that supports hate groups, promotes hateful or bigoted ideology, incorporates iconography and/or dogwhistles of hate movements, etc., whether implicitly or explicitly.

I reserve full legal ownership of the commission and I may repost it to any site. I may use, edit, and reproduce the commission for any and all purposes. In the event of a cancelled commission, you forfeit all usage rights for the incomplete assets and may not edit or repurpose them in any way.

guys i foyght for my life in the trenches last time trying to decide winners so we're doing it a different way now. im just gonna assign every entry a number and draw straws if youre cool with that. its much easier i think..

so basically i am just gonna pull 3 random names out of the hat and all winners will get 1 fullbody drawing of their choice!! no first second third etc thats too complicated 4 me. i mostly just want this to be for fun for anyone interested in participating:)

and now: since today (may 7th) is Speak Your Language Day (@spyld) which i am very fond of even tho i completely forgot about it, and since our last follower census showed that we have a decent number of people from all around the world lurking here, i thought we could do something fun!

so, everyone is welcome to post to their own blog an artwork by an artist from their country or another country of their choosing, along with the artist's name, work title, and a few words about the piece and/or why they like it in their language (as per spyld rules: any language that's not english: either your native one or one you are learning and want to practice!)

Hello, everyone—CHAOS_FANTAZY here, former entrant and judge to the Undertale/Deltarune Sprite Comic contest. It's been a while since the previous one hosted in 2021, but I've been thinking about running this contest again ever since.

So why not now?

As of right now, I've reopened the official contest Discord server in preparation for the 3rd """annual""" comic contest—slated to run throughout the summer, with the submission period running from June through August. I'm making this post to inform everyone of the contest's return, with all the general information given below:

Huh? What? Sprite Comic Contest? I don't understand anything!

A sprite comic, as its name suggests, is a web comic that uses sprites rather than artwork as the main means of depicting its subjects. This is commonly done to produce fan comics for video games, and Undertale is no exception—many prolific AUs, including @invertedfate, began as sprite comics.

This is a contest to produce a sprite comic about Undertale or Deltarune—a game jam but with comics, as it were. If you've ever had an idea for a story you want to tell using these games' characters or setting, but could never justify dedicating time to telling it...this is the excuse you need!

Who's running this show now?

As aforementioned, it's me, CHAOS_FANTAZY! I'm joined by a panel of three volunteer judges, Mufeet, Subna, and Soufon (Whom, much like myself, has no major social media platforms). All four of us are not only long-time Undertale fans who can remember when sprite comics were a highly popular storytelling format, but also participants in previous sprite comic contests!

What's in it for me?

Although he's no longer directly involved in running the contest, the former host @fmsdraws has graciously offered to supply it with illustrated prizes. Additionally, we have a small cash prize pool to distribute among the top three (Via Paypal/Cashapp, or an alternative if both of these are unavailable to the winner):

First place will receive $25, and a custom illustration with up to two characters from Fms.

Second place will receive $15, and a one-character custom illustration from Fms.

Third place will receive $10, and a custom sprite from Fms.

Additional prizes may be added to this pool over the next week or so; this post will be edited to reflect these changes.

How do I participate?

I'm glad you asked! Our official Discord server is not only the proper avenue to send a submission, it also contains all the official rules regarding the production and submission thereof. (The original contest's rules are here, but there have been some revisions and modernizations made since.)

As aforementioned, the contest is planned to run through August—make sure you get your submission in by 11:59 PM EST on August 31st!
