I realized next years marks a decade that I've written Toushiro. I started writing him in end of 2012- start of 2013. --------- I know I haven't written much this year, failing by him, in that regard, but still. Which next year I will do better by him and my parters, this I publicly promise. - But wowee. A friken decade. I'm just writing this cause m surprised by it. ------- Usually I lose interest to things fast, but no, he stuck with me for this long n we've made such great friends. 😭

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

I know I've been trying to get you on discord or get you a new blog for years, to no avail, and I'm not going to pretend that that's something that'll ever happen.

I haven't heard from you in a long time, and before that it was longer still. I think you've moved on, and I wish you the best in that, old friend. I've moved on too, at least to a different platform.

So I just want to say I really appreciate you and everything you've been to me over the years. You never took yourself too seriously as a writer, but I always thought you were pretty good. You indulged me a lot, which I appreciated. And you also listened, on those rare occasions back when you had DMs and I could talk to you about irl stuff. I always cherished that.

So wherever you are, Xang, I hope you're doing well.
