I would like to make a post with every Disney magazine/book series currently published, by country, to help people orienting themselves in this environment.

Of course I will start with Italy (and I ask for everyone from a different country to share their perspective of their own Disney magazines. For example the Brazilian Culturama ones... I have a hard time understanding the different identities of the various titles).

ITALY - Part 1

Topolino (1949-)

The flagship title, that publishes new original stories every week. Although it is named after Mickey Mouse, duck stories have always been pretty prevalent, but the trend has never been as strong as in northern european countries. It has now 164 pages, so it accomodates both long stories (with chapters on different issues or in the same libretto) and shorter ones. It is truly a magazine, so the comic stories are accompanied with artciles about lifestyle, games and more.

I Classici Disney [2nd series] (1977-)

This is the most historical of the reprint titles: since its first iteration, in 1957, it helped to spread Disney comics culture to generations of readers, proposing classics to kids and adults who may have lost track of them in the weekly magazine. The new revamp of the second series (since 2019, and following some changes in 2021) goes back to the original format of linking the stories proposed in longer narrations through inbetween pages, now written by some reknown Disney writer, who gets to choose the stories too. The title has generally reprinted more recent stories, compared to the subsequent I Grandi Classici, and nowadays thw covers are by Stefano Zanchi. It is published once every two months (plus a special summer issue).

I Grandi Classici Disney [2nd series] (2016-)

I Grandi Classici has been another title of reprints, but with a lens more interested in digging up older stories than the ones proposed in I Classici. A big role in defining the identity of the magazine has been played by the never forgotten Luca Boschi, who took the reins of it, becoming the curator, in 2004, during the previous run of the title. He led this book to become more philological, always proposing balanced indexes, between stories which can clearly considered Great Classics, parodies, and more minor and lesser known stories, like some american and S-coded ones. His mantle was then passed over to Pier Luigi Gaspa, who continued to follow this path. As a title dedicated to more in-depth knowledge of the material published, it presents a few articles, detailing the more interesting adventures appearing on its pages every month. Since the 2005 revamp, the cover artist has been Giorgio Cavazzano.

Disney BIG (2008-)

This is the disapponting title. Initially it competed with the Classici for the same stories, period-wise, as it is more centered around recent ones, but, as Classici went back to its original format, BIG could fly more freely in the skies of Disney publications. The main advantage of it is its size. Beaing cheap for its number of pages (initially over 500, now over 400) its popularity rose among parents who want to have their kids occupied for a lenghtier time than the average Disney magazine. But the choice of stories has always been... disapponting. Its size could favour longer and lessen known series, but it rarely went that way, publishing even parts of different series, leaving them unfinished. The selection is, so, pretty random, albeit initially it was supposed to be thematical, a differentiation from other riprints that was soon lost. It is monthly and the covers (which nearly always are dedicated to the first sstory in the volume) have always been done by Corrado Mastantuono.

Paperino (1986-)

One of the oldest titles, Paperino is now not much more than the covers of Alessio Coppola. The series started as a ploy to capitalize the popularity of Donald Duck, producing even some original new stories and selecting some old classics. In the 90s it recolored those old stories and, under the guidance of the usual Luca Boschi, developed some taste for lesser known tales, revolving every issue around a theme. Now it mostly reprints itself, with stories having appeared multiple times over the years. Recently the original story has become, more often than not, an Egmont story, as the places to publish foreign material have winded down over the years and to curb the investments on it. It presents, nevertheless, some articles to introduce the stories, every month.

Paperinik (2017-)

With the popularity of Paperinik, could we not have a title dedicated to him? Many times the numeration has been rebooted and at every iteration there has been the will to change some minor aspect (proposing a chronological reprint of the stories of the Duck Avenger, publishing the Frittole series, importing some Egmont stories or some DPW ones, getting more "social") but its identity has stayed more or less the same. The title is monthly and the covers are now by Ivan Bigarella.

Zio Paperone (2018-)

This is a more interesting title. Zio Paperone in its previous iterations was the magazine for the "collectors", the Donaldists, if I may say, focusing on Carl Barks, Don Rosa and the artists perceived as the heirs of the Man of the Ducks. The articles and the analysis have been so important for the more cultured readers that it was the go-to title for everyone interested in behind the scenes and te re-discovery of lost material. This new book, started years after the demise of the previous one, has a very different aim: it is pretty much the equivalent of Paperino, but for Uncle Scrooge. The choice of stories has, instead, been pretty interesting, as they always publish a new story (Egmont or, more often, dutch), the "Superstar" adventure in every monthly issue is really a source of interest in many ways. There are a few more articles than the norm (2) and they care to publish even some series (and complete them, do you hear, BIG?). The cover artist is Andrea Freccero.

Almanacco Topolino (2021-)

We end this first episode with the heir of Zio Paperone, the current title for more cultured readers, Almanacco Topolino. Its role is easy: to publish selected new foreign stories, older international stories with some significance and a couple of episodes originally published in the previous historical series of Almanacco. The link between all of these proposals is, among others, the fact that it is mostly dedicated to 4 rows per page stories. Originally edited by Luca Boschi, his mantle has passed to Davide Del Gusto and recently to Marco Travaglini. It has plenty of articles, to dive deep in the Disney lore and it is published once every three months. The cover artists is Emmanuele Baccinelli.

Next time we will dive into the less regular magazines, divided between the more popular ones and the prestige titles.

Analysis

Tomoko is in a weird place, being an alright Support, but with a niche in increasing the Effect Hit Rate of allies. For the allies, that do care about getting effects inflicted on allies, this can greatly help consistentcy, however, they are also giving up much more pottentially useful support such as Bui's much better Attack buffs and Critical Hit rate boosts, or Leo's Shields. She can still be very useful, she's just a bit more niche than Leo or Bui, who's niches are much more generally useful and applicable to most characters in a way that helps push damage or protecting benchmark, which will be seen as more important and trackable than consistency.

Good Teams to use Kotomo in are:

Kotomo - Riddle - Haru:

A very powerful Mono-Psi team. Kotomo helps Haru inflict her [Special Treatment] on foes, which sets up her gameplan to deal major enemies to foes with her Firearm. She also sets up Sleep, which will further increases Haru's damage due to the foe having a mental abnormality. Riddle's effect resistance debuffs on foe's makes Kotomo and Haru work extremely well together, with Kotomo's Attack buffs and Riddles wide variety of debuffs lets Haru shine. Probably one of her best teams.

Kotomo - Riddle - Closer:

Kotomo buffs up Closer with Attack and Effect Hit increases, while Riddle applys many debuffs on the enemy, including Effect Resistance . This allows her to get off consistently strong damage with her [Conductive] spreading to many foes. May prove frail without a dedicated tank to help them out, or a healer.

Spreadsheet rambling under the cut

So the limited is 164 pages instead of 184 which means that 3x55 really doesn't work out so great. Unfortunately I'm extremely attached to the page numbers still randoming as 55 because I want to keep the page number frequency chart going. Also ideally I would use the regulars anyway since they are larger. Enter... spreadsheet abuse.

I decided 3x55 is actually mostly fine for picking numbers so long as its distributed out amongst 4 instead of 3. Aka 3x55/4. Which is ~41. 40+ will be lyric pages but I already have that problem with TTOL so I think that's probably a fine compromise.

I've already been manually adding the AlbumNumber*55 to the A:FU and A:FrU numbers so I figured I should probably formularise that into

JLGL is SO GOOD. And because he was so good, he constantly got called on to do things of corporate importance but limited visibility, like the style guide, with the result that he simply doesn't have a legendary run the way that his generational peers often got. Instead, he did short bits here and there, or recurring but not continuous spots on titles like DC Comics Presents.

Imagine if he'd been the successor to Dick Dillin on JLA (after Perez's short run), or the regular late 80s' Batman artist at the time of the movie.

Instead we have isolated gems like his pairing with Len Wein on Deadman (an absolutely perfect pairing).

His collections on Amazon have content lists that read like the output of a random number generator: "Batman #272, #336-337, #353; Detective Comics #454, #458-459; Batman: Reign of Terror #1; Batman: Gotham Knights #10; Batman Confidential #26-28; World’s Finest Comics #244, #255, #258; DC Comics Presents #31, #41; The Brave and the Bold #164, #171; Batman Family #3; The Joker #4; and Batman ’66: The Lost Episode #1."

WAHOOOOOO!!!! MASSIVE DAY TODAY!!!!! I was gonna get my new Nike Frees today finally, I was gonna go test them out at Round 1 Bowling & Amusement, and most sudden yet amazing of all... so of course, i went there and posted a few pics :] but while i was there and drinking a collab drink, i got a few plays in of the new Rotaeno DLC -- featuring hit new awesome scores including Dual Doom Deathmatch (FTR-8+, MAX-20) and Waltz for Lorelei (FTR-8+, MAX-15) as FTR PMs #163 and #164 respectively!!! ohyeah, and also some really good attempts on Inverted World (FTR-9, so close to a sightread PM...) and Dual Doom Deathmatch (ETR-10, could maybe be a PM soon enough?)

like i said, however!!! i was gonna go to Round 1 to test out my new Nike Frees as soon as they arrived, and arrive they did!!! they felt like MONSTERS oh my god i have no idea how they got them to be so lightweight... but it's beautiful and i wasn't gonna let a Day 1 opportunity like this go to waste!!! so, full of Nastea and a dream, i carried my way over to the Round 1 to get some games in... but first!! a word from our warmup sponsor, IIDX!!! where i recently decreased my green number from 325 to 300 to 305 to potentially acc better...

...then, for just a little bit, i switched over to pump to complete some challenge song recommendations from people on twitter dot com and potentially get some other songs in. but honestly? i don't know if it was the bright ass lights from the smx cab, the normal mode failing you out on 2nd and 3rd stage, or just my general exhaustion, but i was Pissed at the game and kinda sick of it, wanting to give up despite not having played any of the challenge songs yet...

it was seemingly no more than a passing thought, however, as i ended up getting a sick new AAA clear on DO or DIE S20 right after ranting!!! and then i got to play the rest of the recommendations in the same set!!!!

switching back over to DDR, i heard about this tournament that was closing its submissions that weekend...! with no other real goals in mind (besides potentially some more Flare Skill from 16s and whatnot), i agreed to give it a go and grind out the qualifier charts for the challenge: those being Tribe, Hyper Bomb, and Elemental Creation!

Tribe was a bit tricky yet doable, seeing as I got a 56p PFC in three attempts, and then Hyper Bomb was a bit of its own struggle MA wise (though i got a 2g FC anyways!)... but perhaps the most surprising result for me was my Elemental Creation!! Nearly an AAA on the ESP-17 at first since i was too scared to try the Challenge, but then a sightread 980k when i DID try the challenge chart...! Incredible!!! What's more, I gave Tribe a few more tries on this other slightly more consistent cab given I wasn't really satisfied with the perfects on my PFC... and after a few attempts on That, I managed to sneak away and end off the session/qualifiers with a 35P PFC BAYBEE!!!!!! YOOOOOOOOOOO

It had started with Louis getting in trouble for coloring on himself when he hadn’t touched a felt tip pen the entire day. Through the years, the random drawings had evolved and changed. There was a period in sixth form when his soulmate must have gotten shy or something, because the drawings only happened after school hours and in places that others wouldn’t be as likely to see. The inside of his bicep, his thigh. A couple times he even had drawings appear on his ribcage. While he didn’t mind those few years, he did seem somewhat soothed when they began to appear on his left arm again. He’d missed them.

Or that completely self indulgent soulmates au that plays out in not always romantic ways.

“Louis, are you telling me that the man on the screen, Harry Styles, is your soulmate?”

Or the one where the world is in black and white until you meet your soulmate, but Harry is world famous and Louis is...well...not.

“It’s my suit for the show,” Harry said firmly. This guy was obviously an assistant if the badge and plate of fruit he was holding were anything to go by, but as he began walking to where the table was in the room, Harry noticed he was walking with a slight limp. Oh shit.

Or the one where Harry's on the Late Late Show for a week and several misunderstandings with a certain mouthy assistant James recently hired make things that much more interesting.
