If My Body Could Speak, Blythe Baird | The Godfather, Mario Puzo | My Father's House, Sylvia Fraser | To The Daughter Who Secretly Longs For Her Mother’s Affection, Lynne Shako | Storms from Jupiter, Wanda Deglane | DO NOT REPLY, @filmnoirsbian
#connie corleone#carmela corleone#the godfather#web weaving#this is...quite negative towards carmela i guess#so i just want to make it clear that i actually really love her as a character and i actually can understand how she became who she was#she was a woman born in the late 19th century raised not just in a patriarchal society but a CATHOLIC patriarchal society#who therefore grew up learning that she was primarly defined by her relationship to her husband and her capacity to be a 'good wife'#so i totally understand why she would take some type of sick pride in knowing that her husband never 'had' to hit her#but like...that entire part of the book was legit hard to read and Carmela was really not that much better than Vito there#so it's kinda hard for me not side eyed the shit out of her when she blame Connie for being a neglectful mom#like geez Carmela I wonder why your daugther might be struggling I'm sure it has nothing to do with anything you did or refused to do...#i'll say that she did end up being concerned for Connie and trying to help so she definitely deserves some points here#unlike Vito's dumbass who was just like 'it really hurts me to know that my daughter is being hit all the time but i can't do anything :('#'I'll tell her it's all her fault and that she deserves to be hit that will surely help somehow'#Vito really spent the entirety of this book being like 'nothing and I mean NOTHING matters more than blood (conditions very much applies)'#domestic violence mention

Thinking about Elizabeth Woodville as a gothic heroine is making me go insane. She entered the story by overturning existing social structures, provoking both ire and fascination. She married into a dynasty doomed to eat itself alive. She was repeatedly associated with the supernatural, both in terms of love and death. Her life was shaped entirely by uncanny repetitions - two marriages, two widowhoods, two depositions, two flights to sanctuary, two ultimate reclamations, all paralleling and ricocheting off each other. Her plight after 1483 exposed the true rot at the heart of the monarchy - the trappings of royalty pulled away to reveal nothing, a never-ending cycle of betrayal and war, the price of power being the (literal) blood of children. She lived past the end of her family name, she lived past the end of her myth. She ended her life in a deeply anomalous position, half-in and half-out of royal society. She was both a haunting tragedy and the ultimate survivor who was finally free.
#elizabeth woodville#nobody was doing it like her#I wanted to add more things (eg: propaganda casting her as a transgressive figure and a threat to established orders; the way we'll never#truly Know her as she's been constantly rewritten across history) but ofc neither are unique to her or any other historical woman#my post#wars of the roses#don't reblog these tags but - the thing about Elizabeth is that she kept winning and losing at the same time#She rose higher and fell harder (in 1483-85) than anyone else in the late 15th century#From 1461 she was never ever at lasting peace - her widowhood and the crisis of 1469-71 and the actual terrible nightmare of 1483-85 and#Simnel's rebellion against her family and the fact that her birth family kept dying with her#and then she herself died right around the time yet another Pretender was stirring and threatening her children. That's...A Lot.#Imho Elizabeth was THE adaptor of the Wars of the Roses - she repeatedly found herself in highly anomalous and#unprecedented situations and just had to survive and adjust every single time#But that's just...never talked about when it comes to her#There are so many aspects of her life that are potentially fascinating yet completely unexplored in scholarship or media:#Her official appointment in royal councils; her position as the first Englishwoman post the Norman Conquest to be crowned queen#and what that actually MEANT for her; an actual examination of the propaganda against her; how she both foreshadowed and set a precedent#for Henry VIII's english queens; etc#There hasn't even been a proper reassessment of her role in 1483-85 TILL DATE despite it being one of the most wildly contested#periods in medieval England#lol I guess that's what drew me to Elizabeth in the first place - there's a fundamental lack of interest or acknowledgement in what was#actually happening with her and how it may have affected her. There's SO MUCH we can talk about but historians have repeatedly#stuck to the basics - and even then not well#I guess I have more things to write about on this blog then ((assuming I ever ever find the energy)#also to be clear while the Yorkists did 'eat themselves alive' they also Won - the crisis of 1483-85 was an internal conflict within#the dynasty that was not related to the events that ended in 1471 (which resulted in Edward IV's victory)#Henry Tudor was a figurehead for Edwardian Yorkists who specifically raised him as a claimant and were the ones who supported him#specifically as the husband of Elizabeth of York (swearing him as king only after he publicly swore to marry her)#Richard's defeat at Bosworth had *nothing* to do with 'York VS Lancaster' - it was the victory of one Yorkist faction against another#But yes the traditional line of succession was broken by Richard's betrayal and the male dynastic line was ultimately extinguished.

Something I love about the implications of the new ‘elemental’ weapons in totk is the idea that link is powering these things himself.
Like, in the first game the weapons were always on - they powered up whether they were being held or sheathed or even dropped. Give a monster a smack, drop it on the ground and it’ll light back up in a few seconds. Generally, this meant that link didn’t have magic, unlike other games in the series. Even the champion’s abilities were just that - the champion’s! He just indicated when to light it up!
But in totk it’s very different. Now, he’s crafting and powering his own gear. The gems were long theorised to be the main ingredient creating magic items, like elemental arrows or enchanted jewellery and armour, and now we have proof!! He’s even learned how to do it himself! Combining gems, or even monster parts to his weapons and lighting them up whenever he wants! Turns them on and off at will! He’s learned to channel magic sometime between botw and totk, something not all heroes learn to do! In fics he’s long been one of the few to have no magic talent whatsoever, and now that’s changed! Wild can officially join the ranks of the magic users!
There’s also the issue of where he learned it and who taught him, but the answer is pretty obvious, and speaks volumes of how far Zelda has come on her own journey.
#botw#totk#loz totk#loz link#wild lu#lu wild#tears of the kingdom#loz tears of the kingdom#tloz tears of the kingdom#tloz#loz#Imagine if pre calamity zelda had been instructed with teaching the champion magic. ohhh she would have burned.#the idea of link being good at magic - her thing - on top of everything else? she would have HATED it.#but now she's probably suggested it herself! she wanted to see if he could do it! she sat down and taught him what she learned#through the endless tutors and books and prayers and late night research and then a century of living as infinite light#its such a huge growth both mentally and magically. the useless student has become the experienced teacher. she's matured so much ToT#totk link#totk zelda#botw zelda#botw totk#botw tears of the kingdom

silver gilt filigree and enamel fan, depicting phoenixes with foliage and flowers, and the moon among clouds. (late) qing dynasty, 19th century.
#china#qing dynasty#late qing dynasty#decorative arts#museum trawling#image source: metropolitan museum of art#a lot of these filigree/openwork fans give the feeling of being made for export#but the phoenixes on this one make me suspect it was for the local market#(the late qing is generally recognized as 1875-1910; i always hesitate a bit classifying '19th century' items one way or the other)

watching Knight chuuya undress and dispose of his armour while you're waiting for him to crawl into bed beside you and you get the treat of seeing him in the skintight black covers they use under the amour, the slight turtle neck and watching as he rolls up his sleeves to put his hair up so it's not too tangled in the morning
getting to feel his hands wrap around your waist and pull you close to him as he mumbles in a groggy tone about how tired he is from work, how he's so glad he can come home to you. his hand traces up to cup your cheek, its slightly rough from combat, you can assume. but its so warm and he knows you enjoy it on you.
being pulled into a kiss and getting to feel him subconsciously wrap a hand around your neck, pulling you closer while he drums on the sides of your neck..... sigh ........
🌱
Agosufsjdja oh 🌱 anon your mind,,,, you make me WEAK!! Watching his deft fingers undo all the clasps and straps holding his armour on, the heavy clanks of each piece as he sets them down, the gentle clinking of chainmail as he lifts it over his head. Stripping off the tunic he's wearing underneath and hastily shrugging on his bedclothes before he gets into bed with you. His hands are rough from training and yours rough with house and yardwork but neither of you mind, his fingers find their place around your neck and waist as he kisses you desperately, murmuring how much he missed you.
#chuuya.bsd#knight!chuuya#🌱 anon#he makes me INSANEEEEEEEE#i went for high medieval period attire! i feel like that or early medieval suits him the best#i just don't see him in the more ornate late medieval styles#high medieval is thst sweet spot between looking like a Skyrim npc and your armour being mostly decorative imo#with the caveat that 15th century gothic armour will forever have my heart#my personal favourite medieval helmet styles are barbuta and great helms. also armet#ignore the historical inaccuracies of one guy taking his armour off all on his own you were typically helped by servants#also ignore that a knight's spouse would definitely not do that much yardwork#royal!reader

*Something poetic about the duality of humans or the impact our environment has on our behaviours and lifestyles*
#hazbin hotel#sir pentious#been wanting to do something that compares their design for like 5 or 6 months#and yet again I’d hid a bunch of details with the shading#I mean atleast you can still tell his fangs are different lengths#he’s fun to draw anyway#snake tails are fun x I hope he looks like a stuffed sock because that’s what I wanted#he’s so interesting as a character I used to hate him and now he is one of my favourites#he sucked being a sinner and I hope he continues to suck being a winner now#like he was so soft and goofy down below but up too maybe he’s too chaotic and has too dark a humour idk#it must be hard to be thrust into a pit for close to a century and a half and then placed somewhere else#and we may see some of his human life but if he was in his he’ll form for a century longer where does the real you start#and where does the person you where forced to be even begin#anyway I am spinning this around in my head like a microwave#also I hand spotted every scale and then at the end realise it looks like my sparkle brush but f it it’s too late#added over an hour onto my usual shading time but it’s cute so idk#ill stop rambling now….

"asoiaf is based off the middle ages, they should be wearing this! [posts 16th century fashion]"
?
#silence bottom#asoiaf#before anyone gets on my ass#bc i know tumblr bitches are pedantic af#yes yes the end of the middle ages is not agreed upon#however the medieval era also doesnt actually exist#its a category later historians came up with to cover a span of ~1k years#given how Rome-focused the Western world is#given how the middle ages BEGINS with the fall of Western Rome#it makes the most sense it would end with the fall of Eastern Rome#that being 1453 with the fall of Constantinople#sure one can make a great argument that it would be as late as 1527 with Charles V sacking Rome as it represented a departure from &#consequently loss of power of the Catholic Church which was the beating heart of the medieval era#but so much changed by the time 1500 rolled around that i cant really see how the sixteenth century constitutes being included in the#medieval era yknow?

"As for the government of the kingdom, [Edward V] had complete confidence in the peers of realm and the queen."
"According to the Crowland continuator, [Elizabeth Woodville] seems to have taken the king's place in listening to his council immediately after Edward IV's death. It does appear that she expected to have some role in her son's kingship, and the Crowland continuator’s report of the letters sent to her by [Richard of Gloucester] indicates that she had good reason to expect to be able to work with him and the other councillors: 'the duke of Gloucester wrote the most pleasant letters to console the queen; he promised to come and offer submission, fealty and all that was due from him to his lord and king, Edward V, the first-born son of his brother the dead king and the queen'."
"[However], in what was Gloucester's first coup, Edward V was separated from his household and Woodville advisors. When the young king questioned the move, Buckingham was reported to have told the boy 'It is not in the business of women but men to govern kingdoms'. The blunt remark referred to the authority of Elizabeth Woodville as queen and the power she must have anticipated within the new political climate left by Edward IV's sudden death [...] While the veracity of this scene is questionable*, the words attributed to the duke no doubt seemed plausible to Dominic Mancini who believed they exemplified the popular sentiment held by men [...]."
-Dominic Mancini, The Usurpation of Richard the Third / J.L. Laynesmith, The Last Medieval Queens: English Queenship 1445-1503 / Alexander R. Brondarbit, Power Brokers and the Yorkist State, 1461-1485
*One of Mancini's key sources seems to have been Edward V's own doctor, John Argentine, who attended to him in the Tower. It's very likely that he was the one who recounted this scene to Mancini, which suggests that it should probably be considered more credible than not.
#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#wars of the roses#15th century#english history#my post#Croyland wrote that 'The counsellors of the king - now deceased - were present with the queen' so yes#He clearly seemed to view Elizabeth as taking on Edward's role after his death#Which is striking since her son - the new King - hadn't even arrived in London yet let alone be crowned#It's also interesting that Richard wrote letters to *her* rather than the rest of the council and that she was the final deciding authority#when it came to her son (she was the one who wrote to him for his military escort) - it's a clear indication of who was seen as important#This is also reflected in 16th century chronicles like the claim that the Archbishop of York gave Elizabeth the Great Seal#We don't know if this is true - the Archbishop was definitely opposed to Richard but More may have embellished or invented the story#But either way it reflects the perception that Elizabeth would have a major role in the realm's governance during her son's minority#Which makes sense as Edward V would have been used to his mother governing for him as part of his council his whole life#It's also interesting to compare the impression we get of Elizabeth's role with that of former kings' mothers in late medieval England#Because that can help us understand her activities (and perception of them) within proper context rather than purely in isolation#From what I understand kings' mothers could be very influential (eg: Joan of Kent) but were almost never visibly/directly associated#with the governance of the realm. It's striking that the most extreme and arguably the only exception - Isabella of France - assumed#her unofficial regent-like role only after literally deposing the former King aka her husband in the most atypical situation imaginable#So it's striking that Elizabeth *was* visibly and directly associated with it despite her situation being entirely standard; despite the#lack of precedents; and despite the physical absence of her son. Especially since she was effectively the king's mother for only 20 days#I do think it's possible to argue that it says something about her power as queen#(Edward *did* give her unusual positions of authority either way) and may also suggest a more direct personality on her part#It may also explain why historians were/are so readily prepared to believe that she wanted to 'usurp the sovereignty' to quote George Buck#Ofc this is my interpretation based on my (limited) knowledge - feel free to correct me
