Even after everything Jamil said and did to him before and during his Overblot, Kalim still trusts Jamil with his very life, no strings attached, no suspicions. Still trusts that even if the other boy chooses to put him under his Signature Spell again, he would never go so far as to harm him like that time. Yes, Kalim is still hurt and even a little angry over the events that transpired ( not for what Jamil did to him, he fully believes he deserves it all, rather, for having endangered the Prefect, Grim and even Octavinelle, as well as mind-controlled the others in Scarabia into the mess ), but he still fully believes he can trust Jamil with himself. Even now being all-too aware of the boy's long-withstanding resentment of him, he's perfectly willing to let things be and trust him as always, so long as the other boy doesn't endanger anyone else.
#hc; kalim#//There are times he does doubt Jami; in the way he behaves around him & Kali has his suspicions he's downplaying something#//But he lets things play out as is anyways. If Jami is going to choose to hurt him again; so be it#//He does try so hard to ensure that Jami doesn't feel the need to; that he's happier than he was before by at least trying to be better#//But Kali's never quite sure if his efforts are ENOUGH; or if they are even the RIGHT ones#//He was never all that good at Getting social cues sometimes; he evidently completely MISSED all of Jami's misery all their lives after al#//So he can't trust himself to discern if Jami's genuinely feeling happier than before; even if Jami himself were to outright say it#//Bc he can never trust Jami to say he's content ever again; not so easily anyways#//Now; he will always doubt if he IS such or just saying so; even if Jami does seem to be speaking his mind more#//Bc part of him will always be whispering What if?#//But even with that; he still chooses to keep him around & keep trying his best to make him happy anyways#//It's almost vainly optimistic; but he doesn't care. That's nothing compared to how much he cares & WANTS to keep caring abt him#//To SHOW him he genuinely has no hard feelings over the overblot incident and all it revealed; he will NEVER stop caring for him#//Perhaps it's almost meaningless in the grander scheme of things; esp as long as they remain Master & Servant#//But damned he'll be if he doesn't do it anyways; in hopes his efforts could at least TRY to make Jami's life a little easier#//Even if he knows he'll prolly mess things up all over again more likely than not; but on even the smallest chance; he's still willing#//Oops veered a little lmao#//Shippy or not; these two give me SO many feelings kjfngftg

for the xmas prompts <3
‘gift wrapping’ with jamie tartt, but reader has issues with money being spent on them
Hey there! I ended up going a different direction with the prompt, I hope you still enjoy it <3
2024 Holiday Blurbs
The holiday season is always so magical, even the most menial tasks seem exciting. There’s something special about going grocery shopping and knowing you’re going to pick up a seasonal treat or making dinner while your favorite holiday songs play from your phone or folding laundry with a Christmas movie on the TV. Your favorite task of the holiday season, though, is anything to do with presents. You love making lists of what you’re going to get for your loved ones, dedicating a day or two to getting all the shopping done, and spending an evening in your comfiest clothes while you wrap each gift with as much precision and care as humanly possible.
Sure, it’s all a little bit unnecessary, but that’s what makes the holiday season especially wonderful, getting to indulge in all sorts of unnecessary bits and activities, and no one is really able to judge you, especially not when you’re going all out for other people instead of yourself.
“I think that’s everything,” you tell Jamie as you haul inside the last bag from your latest shopping trip, getting an epiphany last night about the perfect thing to add to Keeley’s gift and you were far too excited about it to put it off for even one more day. Normally, Jamie joins you on your gift shopping adventures, but with your idea coming so last minute, you wanted to get everything done and ‘gift shopping’ is not a worthy excuse to miss training, whether Jamie wanted to join you or not.
After you shake off the last bits of cold and hang up your coat, you and Jamie gather up all the presents you’ve accumulated in the last few weeks, making a rather ridiculous pile in the middle of your living room, joined with your rather large collection of wrapping paper, ribbon, and other present wrapping necessities. While you sort through the gifts and make sure you know exactly which gifts are for which of your loved ones, Jamie orders takeout from one of your favorite spots, the two of you already well stocked up on sweets and snacks to make your holiday-wrapping-extravaganza-night-in a success.
By the time the food arrives, you have to almost peel yourself away from your sorting, beyond engrossed in your task and positively brimming with holiday spirit, especially as one of your favorite movies plays quietly on the TV, serving for perfect ambiance without being too distracting.
“You might be the only person who likes wrapping gifts more than unwrapping them,” Jamie quips when he notices the way your eyes keep straying over to the gifts, even as the two of you eat your meals.
“Unwrapping is always over so soon,” you shrug, turning towards him with a smile, “and besides, it’s the perfect excuse to spend all night holed up at home.” The two of you have had absolutely packed schedules the last few weeks, drinks and dinners and holiday parties taking up almost every free moment you had, and you’d been craving a nice, relaxing night in with your favorite person. Wrapping presents is your favorite activity anyway, the perfect way to turn off your brain for a bit or let your creativity flow free with choosing different ribbon and paper combinations or trying a new way to tie a bow, and doing it with Jamie by your side, and a pile of holiday-themed snacks, makes it almost unbelievably wonderful, even if Jamie’s wrapping skills sometimes leave a little to be desired.

if the team played monopoly, who would gravitate to which piece?
Let’s assume they’re playing with the latest set of tokens (which I have googled for your edification and mine, gentle nonny), which gives us eight pieces and this highly scientific analysis of our players’ choices:
Colin selects the race car, which elicits (good-natured) boos and questions of his sanity, like fucking really, mate? Colin reasons that this is a car he can’t crash, right, and if he somehow did anyway, it wouldn’t matter ‘cause it’s super tiny! No one can argue with that logic. Live vicariously through mini metal motors, Colin! Safest for all, really.
Isaac gets the top hat, becaue he’s a top dog and also he can rock them costumes, yeah?
Jamie opts for the dog ‘cause he just passionate about dogs. Petting them. Loving them. Rubbing their bellies. (If he can’t choose the dog because Dani already beat him to it, he goes for the rubber ducky, due to its sexual connotations. What are those sexual connotations? I have no idea, but Jamie Tartt will know.)
Dani wouldn’t have minded playing the dog, but will happily settle for the penguin because it is such a happy and majestic animal even though it lives in difficult conditions. (Unless he’s somehow playing for the Mexico in the Monopoly World Championship, which apparently does exist: then he’s selecting the battleship and he’s going to fucking sink you.)
Bumbercatch will not play if he cannot play the thimble, which is one of the original pieces and symbolizes the poor (together with the now retired boot and iron, and in contrast to the top hat, battleship, and canon, which originally symbolized the rich according to the potentially accurate but potentially sketchy online sources I found). He will also never fail to explain the true meaning of Monopoly and its inherent criticism of capitalism.
Sam is inclined towards the cat because he admires the creature’s independent nature and insistence on going its own way, as well as its grace and ability to always find a sunny spot to rest in.
Coach Beard (who might not hang out with the team a lot in general but who will always show up for team board game night) is a rubber duck man, for self-evident yet mysterious reasons. Some things we are not meant to understand, merely to accept.
Jan Maas plays the battleship because it’s the piece left unclaimed after everyone else have chosen theirs. Jan Maas doesn’t care which token he gets, because the token doesn’t actually affect the outcome of the game, so it really doesn’t matter which one you play with. No one else accepts this perfectly correct but also horribly incorrect statement.

Can I be real here? Let me say I'm a woman of color. Period. I love and appreciate everything Francesca stated. She was very well spoke with her candidness. And absolutely agree that you should feel protected at work. But, what I do have an issue with is putting anything like this on a person I work with shoulders. It is the people I work for who should carry the burden as I am an employee of your company and representative. So, to make me feel supported at every turn is a must from my employer. But, if people think that just because Tom would have or should have released a statement you would be incorrect in your thinking. He is an employee be it well known but, an employee. If at anytime she felt unsupported, fearful, or anxious she should have made it absolutely clear to Jamie whose production this was under. I think a therapist should have possibly been brought in for her and any others who felt unsupported. To assume because I speak up or click a like is irreprehensible. Tom doesn't and didn't need to show online support. If you support me, I want tangible support, stuff I can feel, use and hold onto.
Im fascinated by how people put so much on celebrities shoulders to the point that you'd think they owe you something personally because they are in the public eye. They don't. They owe me there craft and that's all. I could care less about there relationships, religious beliefs, or anything else that doesn't affect me personally. Content is fun, amusing at best, but, in reality they are within a bubble real people aren't privy enough to. Most of the time I'd rather they say nothing, because people will hate you regardless if they know the full story or not. And they look for reasons to hate you, anything minute. And I will only assume she is under a full NDA as she hasn't mentioned Tom's name once.
Its funny they still showed lots of hate to Zendaya, the young Asian girl from Star Wars and people still spoke out and supported them yet it still got louder and never died down. To this day even. It's like people need Tom to show you what his beliefs are so you can decide whether or not you want to be his fan. Why? Tom Cruise is about sciencetology yet I still enjoy his movies. I don't care about the relationship he does or doesn't have with his daughter. I don't know them.
When race plays a factor with me or my family I never rely on others, I go straight to the source zero reason for third party intervention. I would rather you show me who you are on every level upfront -racism and all and I will show you how much of a clown you are by working hard in silence and moving strategically. I decide how others, or things make me feel, not others. People on the internet are just that, people I dont know. Fuck them and anyone who chooses to give those type of people power. Yes, it needs to be spoken about but, as far as I'm concerned, I'm black, I'm here, deal with it, and fuck those who don't like it, nobody asked you too. Hollywood doesn't represent me, I represent me every time I walk out my damn door. I'm the standard for who my children should model after with my behavior and anything else. Im the example. Not celebrities.
People assume she's saying she wasn't supported by anyone. Does that include all her black castmates as well? Is that reaching? I saw several times they all seemed to have beautiful things to say about him , her and each other. No excuses just stating what I saw off a couple blogs if my memory serves me well.
Anyway, thank you for allowing me to share. I'm always open for learning so if anyone wants to school me feel free. Information is just that, Information. I can either use it, or keep it pushing.
People give social media to much power. When did random people on the internet dictate how others should be or live? My life is my own. No one owes me anything. That would be like because people hate or dislike Tom's dad, he needs to as well. What the hell, we don't know any of these people despite the small glimpses into there lives. Social media has made us less tolerable, more hateful, and unknowingly foolish. My daughter is in college and she and my son have literally deleted Instagram and Twitter. It's a cesspool of people needing others to validate our lives. Nawww... I'm good over here.
Chocolate over here. ✌🏾 Forever black, proud and mindful.
Dont think Francesca isnt aware this article would in ways display him in a bad light. People's interests are rarely hidden regardless of the intent.
Tumblr media
Wowwww.... uhhh... you spoke a LOT here Anon.
I'm not going to try to write too much, but I'll just point out some things.
First of all, I couldn't really understand whether or not your post was more so defending Francesca, or more so defending Tom? 🤔
I'm trying to figure out what your exact stance or point is.
I def agree that the employer should make you feel safe. Idk if that releases any responsibility from fellow employees though. 🤔
But, if people think that just because Tom would have or should have released a statement you would be incorrect in your thinking. He is an employee be it well known but, an employee.
Have people been saying that recently? I honestly haven't been reading anything related to the recent article tbh. 🤷🏾‍♀️
If at anytime she felt unsupported, fearful, or anxious she should have made it absolutely clear to Jamie whose production this was under. I think a therapist should have possibly been brought in for her and any others who felt unsupported.
How do we know she didn't though? 🤔
And yes, getting her a therapist would have certainly been a good idea... if one wasn't provided for her.
To assume because I speak up or click a like is irreprehensible. Tom doesn't and didn't need to show online support. If you support me, I want tangible support, stuff I can feel, use and hold onto.
I mean, nobody "needs" to do anything. But can you just imagine which way history would have gone (especially here in my country) if people on BOTH sides) had refused to speak out against certain injustices, or reasoned that they just needed to keep silent because their words aren't "tangible"? 🤔 Believe it or not, words have POWER. For good or for bad. 😔
I mean, if a celebrity doesn't know what the heck they're talking about, then yea, I'd rather they keep their mouths shut and not spread false information out there that could be damaging. 🥴
I don't look to celebrities to be my moral compass, or my political experts. I don't need that either. They don't owe me anything but their work. 🤷🏾‍♀️
But if a celebrity wants to speak out on a particular personal experience of theirs, or speak out on behalf of a fellow coworker, then I see nothing wrong with that! 😊
Look at how pleased we were last week with Keith Powers speaking out on behalf of Tom... twice! Yea, Keith didn't need to do it, and he's nowhere NEAR as famous or popular as Tom is, but words DO matter, and they do have power. Sometimes, it's just nice to see fellow actors sticking up for one another, especially when they're receiving insane amounts of hate online. 😔
And you're right, Fran never mentioned Tom's name at all in any of this. So I'm trying to figure out why you are talking like Tom got attacked by her in all of this? 🤔
Its funny they still showed lots of hate to Zendaya, the young Asian girl from Star Wars and people still spoke out and supported them yet it still got louder and never died down. To this day even. It's like people need Tom to show you what his beliefs are so you can decide whether or not you want to be his fan. Why?
Speaking out might not change how some people feel, but imo, it doesn't hurt? 🥴🤷🏾‍♀️
Tom Cruise is about sciencetology yet I still enjoy his movies. I don't care about the relationship he does or doesn't have with his daughter. I don't know them.
I agree. I don't really care about that sort of stuff unless there is continous, ample evidence that you're a crap person.
Hollywood doesn't represent me, I represent me every time I walk out my damn door. I'm the standard for who my children should model after with my behavior and anything else. Im the example. Not celebrities.
Sooo... I'm trying to understand... You're saying that you DON'T agree with Francesca speaking out about her experience on the R&J play production? 🥴
I'm just trying to figure out what you're trying to say here.
I def agree with all of this.
Dont think Francesca isnt aware this article would in ways display him in a bad light. People's interests are rarely hidden regardless of the intent.
Tumblr media
So wait, you're thinking Fran shared her experience with the play to make Tom look bad?? 🥴
So, what... is she just never supposed to speak out on this?
No offense Anon, but it kinda seems like you're blaming the victim here (Francesca), and instead of feeling sorry for her experience, most of your msg seemed to just be defending Tom, instead of defending the person who actually NEEDED the defending in all of this.
You can still feel sorry for Francesca AND still be a Tom fan. The two aren't mutually exclusive imo. But it kinda seems like some fans are even afraid to feel sorry for this girl and aren't even addressing it because they're afraid that it will somehow make Tom look bad or smthg. 🥴
All I'm saying is that it's OKAY to feel compassion for what Francesca went through. We don't know what the cast did to help her feel okay throughout this process. All we know is what she is telling us. And somewhere in this, she did not feel protected at all, which imo, is more so a fault with the James Lloyd theater production company.
At the same time however, if her cast mates wanted to speak out on her behalf, I don't see anything wrong with that either! 🤷🏾‍♀️
Imagine if we just ALL stood silent when people (especially those with less power) are being mistreated. 🥴

An Idea for a Crossover
As the title of this post says, I had an idea for a crossover, that is somewhat fleshed out, but still not at the point where I believe in my ability to turn it into a full story.
So, to get to the point: Library of Ruina x Our Life: Beginnings and Always. Specifically based on a conversation the PoV character (default name: Jamie Last) can have with the other Main Character, Cove Holden, in the Step 3 DLC (Unless I'm misremembering which Step the Moment "Happiness" takes place in, that is. I'm fairly sure I remembered it correctly, though.)
Either way, Cove and whatever you choose to call the PoV character of Beginnings and Always end up in The City, where the titular Library from Library of Ruina is nominally located. For Cove's personality, I am asserting the assumption that he is "Warm" (if this says nothing to you, you might have to ask someone who actually placed Our Life: Beginnings and Always, or play the game yourself. Actually, if you haven't played it, you absolutely should, it's good, and aside from a few moments, it's entirely free.), but it doesn't actually matter that much what direction his hobbies go in. I personally prefer to have Cove and Jamie (or whatever name I end up choosing) in love with one another, and thus, shall consider them married for the rest of this outline. Feel free to disregard that, if you write something with this, just replace mentions of their wedding rings with some other important keepsake. If you want to insert them together, rather than separately, the rest of this probably won't interest you that much? But if you feel like ideas based on them entering The City separately might be interesting, who am I to stop you?
Anyways, Cove and Jamie (which is the name that I am using for the purpose of this outline thing, feel free to use any other name) separately enter The City somehow. Either they end up dropped in somewhere (I do not recommend leaving them entirely without knowledge of the basics of the setting, so... I wouldn't do this unless you drop them on two separate Fixer offices run by decent human beings, which are few, and far inbetween in The City), or reincarnated, or something like that. Either way, they somehow get enough knowledge of the setting to be able to navigate the City somewhat. This knowledge would probably lead them to end up becoming Fixers, likely of an Office associated to Zwei (Focused on protecting), or Seven (Focused on Information Gathering). An Office not particularly connected to either of these Associations is possible, but I feel it is unlikely.
Either way, they end up trying to find each other. Depending on their relative locations in The City, this either doesn't immediatly succeed due to bad luck (if they ended up in close areas), or distance (if they ended up far away from each other (seriously, the City is a big place)).
At some point, an invitation is sent to one of their offices (let's pretend it's a choice for whoever is playing this as a LoR mod, or something), and whoever it goes to ends up part of the group heading into the Library. And promptly Distorting, as losing another member of the group reminds them that they were torn away from one another, and everyone they knew and liked back in their old world. For Jamie, the distorted form would, in my mind, be a clay figure, with a compass where the heart would be on a biological humanoid, and armed with a weapon that looks like part of a compass. Both the body, and the weapon have some patterns from their wedding rings. I'll tentatively call that Distortion "A Lost Stranger". For Cove, I came up with a few separate design ideas (but no names until I started writing this post), one of which is basically him, but made of beach materials (plus water defying the laws of physics) like sand, driftwood, seashells, seaweed, and stuff like that, and another that is an ice golem, or something. I guess I'll call the former "Distant Shore", and the latter "Winter Heart".
Disregarding that for a moment, their actual Distortion presumably only happens *after* they leave the Library as a tactical retreat, because not everyone fights to the last. Either way, the Distorted individual ends up separated from the remainder of their group (maybe some kind of "you don't seem to be feeling well, take some time off, I'll cover for you" from another member of their group?).
After actually distorting, things conspire to have whichever part of the couple is NOT distorted end up meeting the distortion. In the meantime, the distorted one just... somewhat passively wanders the area, applying self-defense when attacked, but mostly just walking/shambling around aimlessly, possibly reacting to people they know, but not quite enough to un-Distort. Presumably, they would both have told their new friends about the one they are looking for, which, if they ended up in very different areas ot the City, would take some time to reach everyone who woul be willing to help out with something like that, but accelerated when the "the Distorted individual seems to have some kind of benign reaction to people they know" spreads around Offices.
When the Distorted member of the couple, and the undistorted one meet, I assure everyone that a suitably emotional conversation in the style of Our Life will occur, unless whoever actually tries to write this out can't do that justice, in which case it's probably best left to the imagination. Either way, whoever ended up Distorting between the two ends up shifted to the beginnings of their Personal EGO manifesting - either that, or just straight (hehe) to their EGO, rather than some intermediary stage.
After that, they spend some time reconnecting, which may result in their Offices being connected independently of them. At some point not too long after that, they go to the Library together, to rescue? whoever they ended up losing there. Whether or not they are aware of the fact that it's a rescue, rather than some weird corpse retrieval, or anything like that? Questionable. Some subconscious awareness seems likely enough, but conscious awareness of the fact is highly improbably.
Either way, once they go to the Library, just the two of them, they fight a floor with comparatively little power first, before going to the Floor of Language, and getting locked into a stalemate with Geburah... briefly. When whichever one of them doesn't have manifested EGO gets injured, the other tells them to retreat, and (in hindsight obviously) lies about being able to finish this alone.
An internal monologue outside of the fighting area leads the one who didn't have their EGO manifested to at least manifest the beginnings of their EGO, and rush back in, just in time to prevent a fatal blow from connecting.
This is probably an appropriate point to talk about my thoughts for their EGO. Cove manifests something water-based or related, obviously. My first thought, based entirely on Our Life, was "Brine of Tomorrow", a water-themed outfit, with some accessories themed after his wedding ring and/or some other keepsake, and including a white linen poppy near the heart. This EGO would have him fight exclusively by throwing around pressurized seawater. My second idea, the one I feel is only appropriate for if he ended up being Distorted, is "Brine Thaw". A similar outfit, but significantly more of an ice theme, and including whichever weapon you believe he'd use if he had to fight for his life and the like, made partially of ice, partially of seawater, and capable of being extended due to that. Still includes significant options for elemental attacks, now also including the ability to make wounds to put salty water into far more easily. For Jamie, I've only really considered one idea for his EGO, and that is "Promised Unity". Either armor, or some kind of clothing patterned after his wedding ring and/or other keepsakes connecting him with Cove, with significant emphasis on anklets and bracelets/bracers that are effectively enlarged versions of said wedding ring. Abilities of this EGO are the production of Energy Constructs, and what I shall (begin sarcasm) creatively (end sarcasm) call "Mana Burst (Emotion)". Using his emotions, Jamie can overcharge a construct, or himself, for a significant increase to capability, for a short-ish time.
Anyways, once both of them have their EGO, they are both absolutely capable of putting the hurt on Geburah, especially because Jamie would absolutely be able to SPAM overcharged constructs in that kind of situation, and that'd be a wonderful pain to fight against.
Thus, they win the "trial" of the Library. And because they are technically not actually there for a Book, Angela may or may not discover the possibility of releasing someone from their book early, if she didn't always know she could do that.
And that's as far as my idea for this goes. I mean, sure, there's possibilities of a sequel where they end up involved with Limbus Company, or resulting divergences, but these two are no longer directly involved with the Library after this - because they absolutely refuse to go there again, and they might literally just go and live in the Outskirts, or something, if someone tries to force the issue -*cough* the Head *cough*.

Chapter 13
“It’s very nice to meet you Kara, we’ve heard a lot about you.” Jason’s dad winked at him, and Kara could see Jason blush slightly.
“Jaime,” Jason muttered, and his dad grinned, showcasing the same beautiful smile Jason possessed. Could a man in his late-forties be considered adorable? Because this man? He was.
I’m confused, is the narration trying to tell us that Jason is in his late 40s, or Jason’s dad is? Because if it’s his dad, then I have to say that the math ain’t mathing.
Kara did an internal Snoopy dance at the implication she was gift enough to their son.
What the fuck is this even. Who sits down, writes this, and goes “Yes. Perfection.”
Oh, who am I kidding. There’s literally no plot, and the author got bored with her own story after chapter 9. No editor bothered to even think about looking this over.
Evalyn had already met him, but that was before they had declared themselves a couple, and somehow it felt different now.
Chapter 13 summary: We jump to them bringing the tree back to Jason’s place and setting it up. After, Jason builds a fire, which they proceed to have sex in front of. Because of course. However, this sex scene is also glossed over, so I legit don’t care.
On Christmas eve, Kara goes to meet Jason’s parents, Jennifer and Jeff. Jamie turns out to be dating Kara’s friend Ryan, who hasn’t been seen or heard from since the first chapter, so I legit forgot he existed. And let me tell you that Ryan and Kara have way more chemistry than she does with Jason. They have more in common than simply wanting to bang each other.
Anyway, because the author has given up, there’s a lot of content that goes into this Christmas dinner. But literally nothing that I’d consider to be remotely relevant to literally anything. I ended the chapter barely reading anything, because it was that fucking dull.
As they’re driving home, Kara unzips Jason’s pants and starts to give him road head. But even that is glossed over! Then the chapter ends with a random hint that they’re going to be spending the day with Kara’s father, Eva, and Eric. It’s like the author forgot to take out her “in the next chapter…” teaser from when this was a fanfic.
Chapter 14
Kara was equally shocked to find a brand new, bright red mp3 player in her hands. According to the package insert, this little baby recorded video, played live radio, and had sixteen gigs of storage.
Nothing quite like immediately dating your story.
“Sure thing,” Jason answered, although truthfully he would rather stay in the kitchen and help Kara with dinner. Football had never really held his interest.
They settled in the living room, Paul in the recliner and Jason next to Eric on the couch.
[...]
“What are you into?” Eric asked, dumbfounded.
Jason couldn’t help but laugh internally at the direction of their conversation. “Well, I’m a doctor, so I don’t have a whole lot of free time, but when I do, I guess I like to read, do crossword puzzles, visit with family, listen to music, play the guitar…” Jason trailed off, unsure of when exactly he’d turned into a woman, and hung his head, “Please don’t take my man card away.”
Imagine being an author. You can write literally any single thing that your heart desires. And you CHOOSE to write toxic masculinity.
And Jason made it to the interstate before falling asleep. The man really wasn’t a big drinker.
Chapter 14 summary: When Kara wakes up the next morning, she randomly decides that she’s in love with Jason. But decides to hit the brakes on that, since by her own admission, it’s only been a few weeks, and that’s literal crazy talk right there. She wakes Jason up, where they have more glossed-over sex. After they’ve had breakfast, they exchange presents, which are both an mp3 player.
They then drive down to Huston (from Austin), where Kara’s dad, Paul, lives. After the introductions are made, Paul starts asking Jason what his opinion on guns is. Since he’s a doctor, Jason obviously has seen his fair share of GSW, and obviously has a poor opinion about them. As a Texan, Paul loves his guns, and doesn’t seem to think much of Jason’s attitude.
When Eric and Eva show up, the boys go into the living room, where they start watching football. It’s tedious and dripping with the author’s casual sexism; I cannot. Jason gets drunk, and practically accosts Kara in the kitchen. She’s alone in there; where Eva went is beyond me. But the author is clearly bored with even this, and skims over the present exchange, and sends Kara and Jason home. Since he’s still pretty drunk, he passes out in the car before they can get on the freeway.

Egotober 2022: Leaves
No trigger warnings, just mentions of food and Jameson being a little shit.
Chase finishes tying the loose knot on Jamie's scarf while Sammi uses the ends of hers to give her brother floppy, very floppy bunny ears, but bunny ears nonetheless.
“And there.” Chase says as he finishes tying the scarf. Jamie grins and hopes around with Sammi quickly pulling her scarf back so she won't get caught.
“You guys ready?”
“Yes!”
“Mhm!”
They both answer excitedly. Chase grins and opens the door, exciting with them and locking the door behind them.
As they begin to walk, Chase asks, “You guys remember where we’re going?”
Sammi is the one to answer, “Mhm! We’re going to uncle JJ’s Shop, then the Halloween store, then the candy store!”
“Don’t forget Dairy Queen!”
“Oh! And Dairy Queen!”
Chase chuckles at his kids and walks behind them, the leaves crunching beneath his and the kids feat.
He lets the cool breeze wash over him as they walk, cutting through the park as he watches them pick up any cool leaves they find on the ground.
It takes about fifteen or so minutes to get to his shop and despite the close sign they walk in, knowing they’re expected.
“Jameson, we’re here!” Chase calls out the nearly empty store. The kids immediately begin to search through the dolls, puppets and figurines that he’s made, Chase doing his best to ignore them.
He hears some shuffling from deeper in the store as he hears his brother call out, “One moment!”
Chase waits as he chooses to look at the cards on the wall as well as some paintings and such. He smiles recognizing one of Jacques’ fall paintings, a woman made of wind dancing with a dress of leaves becoming a bit frosty near the end of her dress, in an autumn scene with leaves that littering the ground while some still cling to the trees.
He hums with a smile until he hears Jameson come over, turning to him with a smile. “Ready to go man?”
Jameson chuckles, “Good morning to you too, Yes I am.”
He has a smile the entire time while Chase blushes from embarrassment, “Sorry, morning Jameson.”
“Uncle JJ!” Came the shouts of the kids as they run over.
Jameson turns to them with a happy smile, “Hello little petals! How are you on this fine morning.”
“Good!”
“Good!”
He smiles before saying, “Those are some fine leaves you have there, might I trade those for a couple of stuffed animals?”
He produces two stuffed animals from behind his back, A Black, Purple and Orange Patch work Bunny with a flower stitched/tucked under one of its ears and a similarly colored flamingo with a jack-o-lantern for it’s body with the top of it’s head.
Chase smiles at the way the kids light up, happily trading the leaves for the stuffed animals Jameson made them.
Jameson holds the cluster of leaves by stems while the kids check out their new toys, Sammi the Bunny and Jamie the Flamingo.
“You guys ready to go?” Jameson nods and the kids give the affirmatives.
“Alright then, of the Halloween store.” He says opening the door for them to leave. They wait for Jameson to lock the door before they head off the Spirit for the kids costumes.
As the kids run a bit ahead, playing with their new plushies, Chase thanks Jameson, a bit of a laugh in his voice, “Thank you for uh, taking the leaves, I did not want to deal with the mess they’d bring.”
Jameson gives him a mischievous smile before pulling a string from his front pockets as he begins to tie the leaves together.
“Goddammit.” He mutters and Jameson just laughs before continuing to tie the leaves together.
He watches a bit, wondering how much string he has in there with how much he’s pulled out while the rest is still inside his pocket.
“I swear you’re like a time lord with all the things you keep in your pockets, it’s like you have an entire room in them” Chase swears he saw him pull a full-blown magnifying glass from his breast pocket before.
Jameson laughs before responding, “No, only in my suitcase”
“Wait what?”
“Anyway, where did you say we’re going to eat?”
Chase narrows his eyes at Jameson, mentally promising to go back to that comment later, “Dairy queens, the kids want a blizzard after they eat.”
Jameson makes a face but shrugs it off, he’s willing to suffer through shitty fast food if it means he can have his chocolate and caramel monster of a blizzard.
Once Jameson finished with the leaves given to him, he begins to pick up pristine leaves from the ground to add to what he assumes will be a messy garland or wreath of of autumn leaves.
He doesn’t stop once they enter spirit either, earning him some confused looks from the employees but they don’t try and stop him.
Once the kids pick out their costumes, Jameson picking out a few things for who knows what and the kids decided he should go a superhero dinosaur. Both him and Jameson hold back their giggles at the costume idea but he ultimately agrees.
Sammi has chosen to go as a Minecraft Creeper and Jamie as a Minecraft skeleton mixed with Ariel(Hair) and Aurora(Dress).
Once everything is bought and paid for, they make their ways to the candy store, the garland getting longer and longer making Chase a little nervous with the mess it’ll make.
The thing has got to be like three feet long by the time they get to the candy store and the kids run in like they've downed an espresso each. Jameson actually puts his project "away", he hangs it around his shoulders as he quickly makes his way to the chocolates.
Chase sighs, mentally wondering how he's gonna make sure Jameson doesn't overdo it with the candy as well as his kids.
He follows his kids around, making sure they don’t get more than a pound each, they’re already going to get a fuck ton on Halloween anyway.
Chase himself grabs a few candies, mostly some pixie sticks and candy corn. The kids get their assortment of candies as well as Jameson, though his is mostly chocolate and salt water taffy with a few others thrown in as well.
Once those are bought a paid for, they finally head to Dairy Queen, Jameson begins to munch on some candy as he goes back to is leaf garland project.
Once the restaurant is in sight, the kids run ahead and Chase begins to jog after them, Jameson perking up when he notices Chase going faster he quickly catches up, frantically picking up good and pristine leaves along the way.
“Hey hey hey! Don’t run so far ahead guys.”
The kids only giggle as the kids bolt inside dairy queen. Chase sighs and quickly follows them into the restaurant, Jameson is close behind.
Jameson once again gets odd looks but he ignores it, Chase orders everyone's regulars and they sit outside of Jameson’s sake to eat.
Chase cringes a bit seeing him eat with dirty hands but shrugs it off, he knows Jameson will be fine.
Once the kids are in a food coma, he orders their blizzards, pretending not to notice Jameson quickly hiding his bag of chocolates as the kids quickly shove a piece into their mouths.
“Ready to go?”
The kids nod eagerly quickly getting up, Jameson following soon after. “Sweet, let's go home.”
The kids don’t run ahead this time, only walking a few feet in front, hugging their plushies to their chest.
“Is Jackie coming by for dinner tonight?”
“Maybe, He hasn’t texted me back yet, I know Henrik will be though, He’s bringing Oliva with him.”
Jameson nods and returns his focus to the leaf garland. Chase can only question where all the string is coming from but he knows better than to ask Jameson unless he wants his head yanked around in confusion again.
It only takes about ten minutes to get home from the restaurant, and as soon as the doors are unlocked the kids are rushing inside.
“That things gotta be like ten feet long dude what the he-heck?”
Jameson merely smiles, a mischievous and knowing glint in his eyes as he ties off the end finally… Before throwing it around Chase.
Chase just gives him a deadpan look, making Jameson grin as he takes the blizzards from Chase’s hands and go over to the dining room table where the kids are waiting for their blizzards.
Chase sighs as he closes the door, taking off the garland of red, yellow and orange leaves as he wonders where to put it where it won't make too much of a mess, for now he just drapes it over a dining room chair as he quickly yoinks his from the tray as the asks the kids what movie they want to watch.
(The kids end up convincing him to put it on the stair way rails at the promise they clean the leaf crumbs.)

Ask Answers: July 10th
I really let asks get away from me lately. I was super focused on working on that Patreon Moment. With that done I can finally think about doing other things, so here’s a new collection of answers!
Thank you for sending in questions everyone ^^.
For the new Patreon moment, will you be able to reference it in step 4? Or just like a tiny nod to it if you pick certain choices?
There won’t be. I’m sorry if you were hoping for that! The Patreon moment is meant to be entirely optional, it’s not something that gets you extra content in the main game.
Is the new CG artist the main one now? :0 I’ve noticed theres been a difference in the art style recently. Is the old CG artist still going to make art for the game? :0
The original artist still makes CGs for the game sometimes, but he mainly focuses on character sprites.
Are you going to put the NSFW our life moment on a website other than patreon? I would love to get it but I can't use patreon atm.
I don’t know. I'm afraid we can't release the Patreon Moment on a normal game storefront because we can't mix 18+ content with our family friendly game. If there's some other place similar to Patreon where it's not the normal type of full-scale public content releases we'd consider using that, but I’m not sure if there is another site that’s better than Patreon in that regard. I'm sorry.
Out of curiosity, in all of your games so far, which characters in each were the most fun to write? They obviously don't have to be your favorite characters!
Buffalo Seer in AFA, really everyone in XOD/XOBD is pretty equally entertaining to write, The Guide in LoV, and Cove in OL!
idk if you accept "personal" questions, but is there anything you've been watching/ listening to lately
Mostly, I’ve been watching/listening to Authortube videos as of late! It’s people who talk generally about the process of how books become traditionally published and/or share their own experience as they attempt to be published. I don’t have an interest in writing normal text based books, but it’s really interesting to hear about that world. I’m listening to a video about royalties right now as I answer these asks.
Will one of the desserts we get to pick be fudge? That'd be such a cute reference!
Haha, yeah, it should. Unless I completely blank on it and forget when trying to include the various referential food options.
I don't know if this has been asked previously but what would be the approximate heights for the presets MC can choose from Step 2 ~ 4? Are there any measurement you had in mind? Sorry if I didn't make myself clear kk I've been struggling with my English lately 💀
I don’t know, ahah. I didn’t have any numbers in mind for that. So it’s whatever you imagine it is!
I noticed a bug with the Patreon moment when it comes to what your character wears. When Jamie and Cove are kissing while my character only had dresses selected, I had both the option to remove the dress or to remove the shirt... Picking one of the options to interact with Cove, after he removed his shirt, it had Jamie remove their shirt followed by ther pants despite only having dresses picked.
Thank you for reporting ^^
I keep refreshing steam to see when the new doc for xobd will be released. I noticed you haven't posted anything about it in quite some time. Would it be possible to ask about a timeline/potential date? (If it's even this year—) I know you and your team are probably working super hard, I'm just super curious! ~Thank you!~
There are more stories done, I just haven’t gotten around to publicly releasing them. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend the time on that sooner rather than later!
hello!! i’m not sure if it’s an update but i’ve just replayed our life and at the end i can’t propose to cove anymore? :(( i’ve actually tried playing twice but the options are not there anymore, did you guys remove the options? i’m sorry if you’ve answered this before!! thank you and have a good one :)
I’m afraid things haven’t been changed or removed, so I think you might’ve accidentally picked the wrong things somewhere along the way and locked yourself out of being able to propose by mistake. Sometimes you meant to say you want to get married but instead you mis-click and have it so the MC isn’t thinking about marriage or something. All I can suggest is starting from the beginning of Step 3 and making sure to follow the steps listed in the FAQ. I’m sorry for that.
Did yall remove some of the options for when youre making out with Cove in the charity moment? I could've sworn you could grab his bonkadonk and its not there anymore
This is the same situation as the above. We didn’t remove things and you’re not wrong that there are sometimes those options. But there are various choices you have to make to get those options and it sounds like you accidentally missed something. If your relationship isn’t long-term, you can’t do it for example.
HI IM SO EXCITED I CAN FINALLY GET THE STEP 3 DLC
Thank you for getting it!
Is Shiloh super totally straight bc I’m very gay and a huge Shiloh fan, would my man make an exception?😩
Sadly, he is one of our super straight characters. I’m sorry.
Hi, I have a very dumb question. In Step 2 does Cove not wanna share his drink with us at the mall (or rather why he stops drinking it) because it's an indirect kiss? Or is it like ...weird to him to share? Because if I remember right he eats off our spoon in the birthday scene right?
Yeah, he’s awkward about it because he likes the MC and it feels very personal to share a straw with his crush.
Hi! If you don't mind me asking, who is the artist for OL2? Their style is so pretty!
Thank you for saying so! This is her Twitter- https://twitter.com/redridingheart
Do Beginnings & Always and Now & Forever exist in the same universe?
Yep! XOXO Droplets also exists in the same universe. It’s one big GB Patch world, haha.
Do Pran's parents regret the way they raised him? Do they feel ashamed of it?
No. They’re the type of people best cut out because they’re not gonna change. Which is why Pran does go very limited contact when he’s an adult.
Hi! I just wrapped up my second playthrough of Our Life, and I absolutely adore it, but I had a question. I went to the gallery and found I was missing 2 CGS (specifically Step 1-3 and 2-3) and I had no clue where they would've shown up. Which moments are those found in?
You get it by telling Cove about his dad offering you money to be his friend in Step 1 and Step 2. You can’t get both in one playthrough, since you can only tell Cove the truth once. I’m really glad you liked it!
Hi hi! Please, how tall is Baxter and Derek? Love the game so much and I can't wait to see more!
I don’t know, aha. I think Baxter was around 5′10 and Derek was like 5′8/5′9, maybe. I really am not one who has specific heights for things in mind.
is adult cove a bottom, top, or switch?
A switch, though would choose the top if he had to pick.
I was wondering if there is a way to transfer save data? Even if through the game files. I wanted to be able to transfer my save data from my desktop over to my laptop so that I could continue playing right where I left off from but I'm not entirely sure how to go about that.
If you save the save folder/persistent data of the game from your desktop and put it into the game folder on your other device, that could work.
Hi! Is it possible for us to know the date when our life: now and forever comes out on steam? Sorry if you've mentioned it before but I haven't seen it and I'm looking foward to that happening and just wanted to know :)
It’s gonna be a long time, I’m afraid. There’s no estimate right now.
I started playing Our Life with my sister a while ago, and I think you guys should know that we discovered your secret. >:)
L from death note and Cove are clearly the same person, and this whole game is just an origin story!!
I’ve never seen that show so I’m sorry to say I don’t understand the connection/reference you’re trying to make. I’m pretty out of the loop when it comes to media. I don’t watch movies or TV.
Will OL2 have options for disabled MCs?
I understand if it's too complicated, just curious
Unfortunately, it’s not really something we have a plan for. We couldn’t finish the game if we tried to include every disability and have it be meaningful. It’d just be too much content to create. But if we decide to only include a few, how would we choose which disabilities get to be represented and which are left out? I don’t know. It’ll probably have to be something we don’t include as an option again, sadly. I’m sorry.
playing our life > anything else
Haha, I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
Honestly, I would like to thank Our Life for helping me come to terms with my sexuality. Before, I never would've actually thought that it was possible to like boys romantically and still be asexual. Almost all of the BL visual novels I've read had unskippable sexual content in them and it honestly just didn't click with what I feel. I'm glad I found Our Life. I love the game, the developers, and this fandom so much. Now, I can safely come out as homoromantic AND asexual (at least anonymously here anyway; my parents are still huge homophobes 😂).
Aw, it’s great to hear you felt comfortable being yourself in the game! That’s wonderful. I’m really sorry about your parents, though.
Will the demo for OL2 be on android? Really not sure if I could wait any longer than I have to aha
Yeah, it’ll be available for Android once we eventually release a demo!
Do all these reveals perhaps mean development is progressing ahead of schedule? Please let that be the case I'm already obsessed with Qiu
No, sorry, aha. Art comes along much faster than script/programming-work for us. It’s gonna be a long time before the game is a finished thing you can actually play. But at least we can look at the beautiful images.
Hey! First of all I wanna say I reallllllyyyyy loooovvveeee Our Life and XOXO Droplets! I have over 300 hours of playtime on Our Life… Anyways, I was just wondering, are the Derek and Baxter DLCs going to come out at the same time? If not, which one do you plan to release first? :3
They will come out separately and Derek will be first! Glad you like the game.
I keep replaying Our Life to get every possible iteration and I am loving it <3 I was wondering if Cove gets locked out of his confession because MC was talking to Lee, would it be possible to confess to him in step 4?
Yeah, you can avoid the confession in Step 3 and then get it in Step 4.
Hi, my Cove wears bracelets through step 2 and 3 but I still don't get an option to give him a bracelet? I didn't even know that was possible until I seen someone else ask about it lol
Hm, did you use the Cove creator? Maybe there’s a bug where using the creator to add bracelets doesn’t fulfill the requirement to give Cove a bracelet in Step 3.
Wait, I'm dense, when does Baxter appear in step 2? Is it from big park firework? I feel so bad since i really love Baxter and waiting to buy his dlc.
It’s in the Soiree Moment. You have to be just friends with Cove, indifferent, or crushing but not ask Cove to the dance at all. Then while there you can find someone new to dance with. But if you bring Cove to the dance while crushing, the MC won’t wanna dance with anyone else so you can’t get the scene.
In step 2 when we go to the soiree I made my mc go alone and baxter chooses the mc to dance, i'm curious, why did he pick the mc? sorry if this has been asked before!
Because the MC looked to be around his age, seemed to also be searching for a partner, and had nice legs. A perfect option for him.
I read some of the FAQs, and I saw that we could tell Baxter about the condo that he rented there was previously the mean old grandparents. how do we get the mc to tell him that?
It happens in the DLC Moment “Late Shift”. If you don’t have a job you instead get a longer scene with Baxter.
I don’t know if you’ve addressed this or not, but are you planning on paying voice actors for our life: now and forever?
Yeah, we pay our VAs in all our projects.
hey can i ask how you did the moments thing in ol? im trying to get into making visual novels and while im VERY sure its out of my comfort zone and all that atm i kinda wanna know just for the future, bc im p sure it would work well for something i wanna do :O but its also fine if you cant say for other reasons :>
I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking how we programmed the screen or something script related? Adding Moments like that is pretty straightforward, though. You just have buttons that open to different labels and then the scripts are essentially individual short stories/vignettes. Good luck with your VN!
Since Autumn becomes gender fluid later in the game, will there be a character who remains as he/him to romance in game?
OL1 has the he/him LIs, OL2 is all about other genders.
I don't want to impose on your creative plans, but a parrot could possibly make a good pet in an OL-type game? They're pretty long-lived and likely to still be thriving by the end even if the MC got them back in step 1.
I do appreciate the suggestion, but I’m afraid it’s not likely going to happen. I understand there are technically some animals that could theoretically live long enough to last the whole game that or we could have the MC only get a pet after some years have already passed. But the many things that would have to be considered/accommodated for makes it just something we probably can’t manage adding. I’m sorry.
As time passes will we be able to see Qiu and Tamarack's other stage arts as well?
They are both so cute i can't wait to be friends with them!
Yeah, we’ll show content from other Steps in the future. It’ll be a little while from now, though.
Can you date Cove and still have your family comfort you in the car?
You can’t get Cove’s Step 3 confession scene if you have the family comfort you in the car. But that’s not the only way to date him. You can get together with him earlier in the game or later on in Step 4.
Is Mc always going to be the one walking down the aisle or could Cove do it? Also could you choose to have one of your moms walk you?
No. Cove wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle like that and the MC automatically respects that. And the MC also gets to have their preferences respected, so it’s up to you whether they want to do an aisle walk or not. You also can pick who, if anyone, walks with you.
Once step 4 is out, will you be able to go the whole game on crush/love without either of you confessing?
Yes, as long as you tell the game you don’t want to progress the relationship. Even in Step 4 it won’t force you to officially get together.
Howdy, so in Step 4, there will be any Romance with Derek that is not part of any dlc?
He’s only a friend unless you get his romance story.
Will the step 4 in OL2 be one big step or are you considering moments?
Step 4 is just an epilogue in both games.
hi kind of a weird question but!! we know tht cliff doesn't start dating again but. wht abt flings? like does he ever do 1 night stands or anything? thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope. Cliff has a very small interest in sex. If he’s not in a real relationship with a partner he’s crazy about it simply isn’t something he feels a need for, so one night stands wouldn’t even cross his mind.
sorry if you've already answered this, but i was wondering if there were plans for there to be bonus love interests in OL2 like how we have derek and baxter in OL1.
Maybe! There are side characters who could be given romance stories, but whether or not it will happen depends on funding and how long everything else takes to finish.
I don't know if i'm allowed to ask about ol2 here yet, if not u can ignore this or answer it later. My question is can you date one of them and be good friends with the other? I don't want to be strangers with the other bcs i love them both a lot :<
Yes you can!
what patreon level do i have to be to unlock the nsfw moment? im on the $5 one right now, will that give me access to the moment, or just access to the moment progress?
That’ll give you access! Tier 2 and anything higher allows the player to download it.

The Halftime of It
Fandom: Ted Lasso Pairing: Roy Kent/Keeley Jones Rating: E Word Count: 2814
Summary: Roy turns up to coach AFC Richmond. At halftime, Keeley commends him on his choice.
“You disappointed they didn’t start up the ol’ Roy Kent cheer when you walked in? Is that what this face is?” Ted guesses.
Roy maintains his scowl, staring out at the pitch, though maybe the skin around his eyes tightens a little in annoyance. He fucking came here to watch, not be watched.
“No,” he says gruffly.
“I reckon there just wasn’t time before the start of the match to squeeze it in,” Ted says, apparently choosing to go ahead and console him anyway.
“That’s fine.”
“Well, they’ll get to it though. These folks love the heck outta you. Our old pal Jamie wasn’t anywhere near as much of a hit when he came back to play for us, but soon enough this stadium was ringing with ‘Jay-mee Tartt, do do—’”
“FUCK!” Roy roars.
“Let it out,” Coach Beard mutters from Ted’s other side.
Nate jumps and tries to cover it by looking stern, like that’s fucking fooling anybody.
“I forgot I was going to hear that fucking song all the time,” Roy explains. “I’ve changed my mind. I resign.”
“Oh no,” Ted counters, having the fucking nerve to chuckle, “you’re back, baby. I’ve got a few witnesses.”
He points around at the fans currently yelling their heads off as Sheffield Wednesday make a dash for Richmond’s goal only to be met by Dani Rojas’ lightning-quick sliding tackle.
From where Roy stands, the ref’s body language suggests he’s about to award a free kick to fucking Sheffield Wednesday.
“OI!” he yells out. “IT WAS A CLEAN FUCKING TACKLE! GET YOUR FUCKING EYES TESTED!”
“You know,” says Ted, “that is a great reminder. I’ve been over here how long now? And I haven’t made the time to find myself an optometrist. Now, that’s a little shortsighted of me, dontcha think?”
Grinning, he bumps his elbow into Roy’s arm. Roy growls under his breath.
But he says, “I met a shitload of optometrists on Sexy Christmas. I’ll get you some numbers.”
“Optometrists? I would be just fascinated to know how that fit into y’all’s plans, but I’ll let you keep that between Keeley and yourself.”
“It was only because we couldn’t find a fucking dentist.”
Roy sees Ted open his mouth to respond to that, so he fully puts his back to him to concentrate downfield. Looks like either the ref got his head out of his backside or heard Roy’s voice, remembered the legendary Roy Kent anger, and decided to live another day. To override whatever that prick may have said to Dani, Roy calls out, “NICE TACKLE BACK THERE, ROJAS!” the next time play halts for a throw-in. Dani beams.
“Way to support your players there, Coach,” Ted says.
Roy turns so they’re side by side again and crosses his arms.
“Just feels right, havin’ you back,” Ted goes on uninvited as Roy observes his team’s passing pattern. “Like the cherry on the top of a triple-decker sundae. ’Cept I don’t really like those cherries they put on sundaes. They look so gooey. Blech. Hey, Coach, what’d be a better fruit to top a sundae with?”
“Chocolate-covered strawberry,” Roy answers instantly.
His mention of Sexy Christmas brought a few of Keeley’s special touches to the front of his mind—the strawberries, the martinis, the sheer fucking dress thing she was wearing. He releases a heavy breath. Sure enough, that outfit made a reappearance on December 28th, but that doesn’t mean Keeley’s out of his system. She’ll probably never be out of his system, and Roy’s alright with that.
“Chocolate-covered strawberry!” Ted says in excited agreement. “Boy, to quote that review you wrote on your signed picture at the kebab shop, ‘Yum.’”
Roy jerks his gaze away from the pitch, which really hurts him because Jamie’s just gone down after what looked like an accidental kneeing in the balls. (He doesn’t bear that knobhead any ill will, but he’s just got to enjoy shit like this when it happens. Wouldn’t be human not to.)
“How the fuck do you know what my picture says?”
“I went back and ate there again. Like I said at the time, best I ever had. What was I supposed to do, not go back?”
“Yes.”
Looks as though Jamie’s now attempting to talk the ref into red-carding the player who kneed him. Roy, rolling his eyes, has no interest in that; he doesn’t mind taking his focus off the match for a few seconds when his phone vibrates inside his jacket pocket.
It’s a text from Keeley.
Um hi? First of all, proud of you. Second, you look delicious in that suit. Come to my office at the half.
Delicious. At least she didn’t say yum.
What for? he texts back.
I think you know what for, gorgeous.
With a flustered huff, Roy tucks his phone away. Why the hell would she do that to him? It’s his first fucking match as a coach. How’s he supposed to focus now?
“Who was that?” Ted asks.
“No one.”
“Ah, so you were just pretending to text. I get it. People do that sometimes, when they’re feeling nervous. Helps ’em avoid talking to somebody they don’t wanna talk to, or confronting their own loneliness in a roomful of strangers. But just so you know, everybody in here’s your fr—”
“I’m not fucking nervous.”
Ted blinks expectantly and Roy stares hard back at him for as long as he can stand, but Ted’s not giving up.
“It’s one of the assholes from Sky Sports. Contract stuff.”
Ted laughs.
“I gotta call your bluff there, Roy. You’re looking forward now. I don’t think you’re gonna give the people at your old job the time of day until Keeley twists your arm about it. You heard the term ‘ghosting’?”
When Roy ignores him, Ted pushes.
“Who was it really? Was it Keeley? I think it’ll be real nice, the two of you working in the same building…”
Roy allows Ted to prattle because getting him to stop would take too much energy. He’s going to have to get used to this again.
At halftime, the boys march off the pitch, eyebrows raising and smiles widening as they approach Roy. Who turns on his heel and wrenches open the door between the stands.
“I think he’s just a little overcome with emotion right now,” Roy hears Ted telling the team before the door shuts behind him.
He takes a few controlled breaths, like he learned to do in yoga, and walks quickly in the direction of Keeley’s office. When he arrives, the door’s open and she’s inside, pulling her desk forward.
“You need help?” he offers, striding forward.
“Nah, you’re alright,” Keeley promises with a big smile. “You could close the door though.”
Roy hesitates.
“Babe. We don’t have long.” He twitches his sleeve up to consult his watch. “No more than ten minutes. I’ve gotta get back before the half’s up.”
“You will,” Keeley says sweetly.
She goes to the door herself, closing it securely, then running her hand across his chest on her way back. A little tug on his tie and he’s already going rigid in his pants. She rounds her desk, stands with her arm draped along the top of her chair. And how the fuck is he meant to turn this down?
All business, Roy exhales and shucks his suit jacket.
“You better get good and wet for me, ’cause I’m gonna be rubbing your clit so fast my hand cramps if I’m gonna get you off in time,” he says, unbuttoning his shirt cuffs and rolling his sleeves.
It’s wonderful how Keeley can let her mouth drop open and still be smiling.
“I think I just came from that imagery alone. But you’ve misunderstood.”
“’Course I haven’t. Sit down.”
He nods at the chair she’s framing, but Keeley coyly shakes her head and moves away, motioning for him to sit instead.
Roy takes the seat, holding his arms away from his body; he expects his girlfriend to climb onto his lap any second. That’s what has his heart thumping so fucking hard.
Only, she sneaks around to the chairs she has for visitors and grabs a pillow that has the look and texture of a dyed and sheared poodle. Dangling the pink thing from one hand, Keeley circles around and tosses it at his feet. Then she kneels on it.
“Fuuuck,” Roy growls, and it’s not a damn thing like the growl he gave Ted.
“Mmm,” Keeley hums in agreement.
Eyes locked on his, she reaches for his belt. It’s no fucking accident that her hand skims over his crotch on the way.
“Do you know what I was watching before the match?” she asks.
Roy shakes his head, then clears his throat to answer.
“No.”
“Come on, you do.”
“Me quitting the pundit job you talked me into?”
“Yep,” Keeley says. He feels good when she tells him he guessed right. He feels really fucking good when she unzips his trousers and roughly yanks his shirttail free.
“But you’re not mad. Clearly.” His girlfriend smiles and grips the waist of his trousers. He feels the dull edges of her nails and then she’s hooking her fingers around the band of his underwear as well, scratching softly at his bare skin. She negotiates the elastic over the head of his erection and he lifts up from the chair so she can bring his clothes down past his knees. “You said you were proud of me.”
She nods, kneading the tops of his naked thighs with both hands, and then leaning forward to kiss the inside of his left one.
“I am,” she says. “I think you’ll be a brilliant coach.”
He shifts, uncomfortable with the compliment and restless with her mouth so close to his straining cock.
“Don’t see why it isn’t you up here and me between your legs,” he says, meaning it, even when her hands slide higher and Keeley wraps him in the loose, warm hold of her fingers.
“Because of what I saw on that broadcast.”
“Me quitting?”
Keeley scoffs and grips him more firmly, working up and down his full length in sure strokes.
“Guess again.”
“Me getting emotional,” Roy says.
His girlfriend beams and scoots closer. Her hand drops to encircle the base of his cock while her tongue slicks the head. To stay sane, he focuses on how the thick hoop of her gold earring swings against her jaw.
“Me caring about the team,” he chokes out as Keeley’s other hand comes up to cradle his balls, her thumb massaging him. “About my job and my future. Me being… fuck.” He can feel her lips parting, dragging over him, probably getting a smudge of shiny lipstick on his cock. He’s no longer giving any thought to the time, but it doesn’t matter—he won’t take long.
“Me being passionate,” Roy says when he can get the words out.
Keeley’s head sinks over his lap and, after that, all he says is a whole lot of nonsense.
“Any tips, Coach?” his girlfriend checks cheekily, lifting off of him a couple minutes later while her hands continue to work. His jaw is clenched, maybe too clenched to speak.
“You’ve never…” he ventures when he can. “…needed any.”
“Alright. Well, just don’t mess up my hair.”
Roy looks at the tight blonde swirl on top of her head and smiles. He knows better than that; his hands have been clasped around the sides of the chair since she dropped the fucking pillow.
“Feel like a bit of an idiot,” he grunts, as Keeley’s lifting his shirt to kiss his abdomen, palm smearing precum around the head of his cock until—hopefully—her mouth returns to wet him properly.
“How come?”
That hot breath on his skin. He can tell she’s panting. Fuck, he gets the same way when he’s doing this for her, tongue or fingers buried inside her, totally caught up in her pleasure.
“I thought ten minutes wouldn’t be enough time.”
“Oh.” Keeley pulls back and grins. “You gonna come? You gonna have an orgasm because I’m on my knees for you?”
Roy closes his eyes, head falling back.
“Fuck,” he whispers.
“You want me to keep going or you want me to help you last longer? Just tell me which one, babe. We can do this however you want.”
He nods as he thinks, then tips forward to look at her. Cheeks flushed, lipstick gone. Heat surges to his groin and he pulses in the fist she quickly slackens.
“Help me last,” Roy gasps. “Please.”
Keeley nods seriously and says, “The other reason you’re up there and I’m down here is that you put on a damn good show, but I could tell your injury was killing you when you turned up. No way am I letting you get down on your shit knee.”
Her bluntness makes him smile.
“Thanks.”
“Sure.”
“You know I am gonna be on my knees for you as soon as it feels better though, right?” he says. “I plan on making Sexy Christmas up to you for the rest of the year.”
“Until next Sexy Christmas?” she asks, eyes bright. There’s something painfully hopeful in there too that makes his fucking chest squeeze with how much he adores her.
“Maybe tonight. Even if it’s only… fucking… Sexy Saturday.”
“Sexy Saturday has a pretty nice ring to it,” Keeley points out.
To show her praise is genuine, he guesses, she takes him deep into her mouth. So much for helping him last. He swears and shouts, counting on the team making enough noise down in the locker room and the fans chatting at full volume in the stadium to essentially render his girlfriend’s office soundproof. Hand cupped around the back of her neck, he rolls his hips gently to the pace set by her eager tongue.
His free hand isn’t free for long—it locates hers to link their fingers, the soft back of Keeley’s hand resting on his thigh when the muscle goes taut. He’s so close he can fucking taste it. She knows too, her hand doing short, quick pumps low on his shaft. When she emits this devastating, brain-shaking moan, mouth full of him and eyelashes fluttering, Roy loses it, locking their hands together. His gaze floats to the white ceiling, then his eyes roll back at the feel of Keeley swallowing around him.
He loves her, he loves her, he probably tells her somewhere in all his mid-bliss babbling.
Sitting there as he gets his breath back, with his shit knee and his bare ass on her chair, Roy turns tender eyes on Keeley. She rises and winks at him, backhanding her lower lip. Fluffing the pillow back into shape, she returns it to its chair. She comes back to his side of the desk and opens a drawer. Once she’s extracted a mirror and a tube of lip gloss, she dabs shimmery pink dots across her lips before smoothing them with the applicator. He wheels up behind her and hugs her around the waist, forehead pressed to her back.
“You gonna get dressed?” she asks.
“In a minute. Do I have time to hold you?”
Keeley must have brought her phone with her, but she plucks his arm, tilting it—presumably inspecting his watch.
“Not really,” she says.
“I’ll run.”
The discomfort’ll be worth a little more time with her, he thinks, sighing in contentment and inhaling his girlfriend’s perfume.
“You will not,” she informs him. “I’ve got a better idea.”
So after he’s swiped a few tissues from the box on her desk, and righted his suit—with Keeley playfully fighting to leave him at least a little disheveled (“No.”)—and scowled at the Roy Kent decal stuck to her wall (“Prick gets to spend all day with you.”), and accepted the kiss she gives him when she sees he’s jealous (“I’m not jealous.”), he yields to this “better idea” of Keeley’s.
Which ends up being to have him remain seated in her chair while she pushes, running full tilt in her heels and giggling madly.
He should make her stop when they get to the first closed door.
He lets her do it until they’re right outside the locker room.
Standing, he straightens and rebuttons his jacket. Keeley bites her lip, grinning, and pulls the chair away. She steps close and wiggles the knot of his tie into place. Roy breathes, preparing to go in and catch the end of Ted’s halftime pep talk. At the last second, Keeley grabs his arm, stretches up, and plants a sticky kiss on his neck.
Roy gives her a wry look, eyebrow cocked, then strides into the locker room. He has his head held high when his team spot the pink print of Keeley’s lips and start OOOHing their fucking heads off.

Chapter eight
You heard Hana and Jamie bickering in the living room as you took the burnt part off of the bell peppers you roasted. You were looking out the window in front of the sink every once in a while to check up on the kids. They were having fun playing with their father and uncles. You’ve never seen them smile brighter.
You were happy that they finally had their father, Tobio was a good figure but obviously not their real father. Earlier Rin gave his first scolding to your son for shoving Akira and he also told Akira that calling people idiot wasn’t nice. You couldn’t help but snicker behind your cardigan since he was obviously nervous and a bit awkward but it all worked out in the end. The twins and your best friends were peering through the door at the scene and they were in awe.
It just looked so natural. You, Rin and the kids. All that’s missing is a pet dog or cat. Jamie thought if you and Rin really try then you both could fall in love again and be a nice family all together. She grew up with divorced parents so she knew how tough it could be. She doesn’t want to hear you and Rin fighting in the future about upcoming holidays. Or maybe eventually having to separate the twins.
“Hana do you think you could ask the guys if they want to stay for dinner?” You said from the kitchen. “Oka-“ “No y/n, I think you should do it.” Jamie popped in. “Huh? I’m literally cooking.” You said as you reached into the bag of roasted peppers. Your fingers were stuck onto the black crisps. “You’re trying to avoid them.” She squinted and you rolled your eyes. “No I’m not.” You defended yourself. “Yes you are.” She deadpanned. “You never say no to setting for your kids. Even if you’re busy you tell them to give you five or ten minutes but when Rini asked you straight up said no since you needed to cook. I think that stung him a bit. He probably wanted to show off his skills to his dad.” She said and you frowned slightly. “I mean it’s fine, she’s probably uncomfortable which makes sense. The worst people in the world are just chilling in her house. It makes sense that she’s on edge.” The familiar voice said and you turned to see Atsumu leaning against the breakfast bar between your kitchen and living room. You didn’t want to say he’s right..but I mean..he’s right.
“...would you like to stay for dinner?” You asked awkwardly as Jaime sighed and walked away. “Mmm depends, what are you making?” He teased to try to help you ease up. “Food, either take it or leave it.” You said plainly as you flipped the pepper on the stove. “I miss your cooking so I think I’ll stay. Let me call Osamu so he can help.” He said and you immediately protested. “No it’s fine, you guys are the guests. I’ll feel bad.” You said and he chuckled. “Y/N-Chan..” he started, “Osamu owns his own restaurant, all he does is eat, cook, and work out. He would want nothing more than to help you cook. It’s in his DNA.” He said and you rolled your eyes. “Fine ask Rin if he wants to stay too.” You said. “Oh he’ll want to stay, plus we all carpooled together.” He said and you nodded and he left.
“Yo, we gotta go.” Jamie said from the doorway. “Did you say bye to the kids?” You asked and she nodded. “Sorry Y/N, we have a doctors appointment.” Jamie frowned slightly. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll call you later.” You smiled and she nodded sadly. After a quick goodbye hug they were out the door and Osamu was waiting in the kitchen to help you cook.
“Alright boss, let’s get started.” He said as he washed his hands and you chuckled.

Dinner went good, the kids mainly talked and were the stars of the show. After dinner they wanted to show their uncles and dad their Minecraft worlds on their tablets, courtesy of Tobio.
Suna offered to help clean up but you insisted it was fine and to spend as much time with the kids and he reluctantly agreed and you were left alone.
Your phone buzz after you sat on the breakfast bar to enjoy yet another cup of tea and you almost spilled it when you saw who was calling. “Holy shit, holy shit.” You muttered and the guys immediately turned to you from their spots on the couch. “I’m going to take this phone call I’ll be right back.” You said leaving Rin in charge and you answered while you made your way down the hall.
“Hello?” “Hi is this Y/N? This is Natsuo, the songwriter and director for the soundtrack for Kimetsu No Yaiba. From my understanding you are voicing Nezuko and Shinobu, correct?” “That is correct, sir.” You replied, “Well I stumbled across your portfolio and resume and I phone called your old vocal coach and he said some things about you.” He said. “Well I hope they’re all good.” You chuckled nervously.
“Yes they’re more than good actually and I wanted to offer you the opportunity of singing the opening for the anime, if not then maybe the outro. Would you be interested? Of course you’d have to come to the studio and sing for us and we’ll decide but I wanted to ask first since I know you also work as a volleyball commentator as well.” He said and you gasped.
“Yes sir of course, I would be honored...” you said happily. “Great! I see that you come in the studio on Monday for the read through of the script. Can you come earlier to audition?” He asked and you agreed and set up a time.
Normally any other person would want to audition after but if it’s singing, you can’t eat or drink sweet stuff before because it messes up your throat and you can accidentally burp and embarrass yourself. So you’d rather do the singing audition before and eat whatever is at the snack bar during the read through.
When you hung up the phone you squealed and did a little happy dance. You quickly took a deep breath and you made your way out of your office back to the living room. “Um...where are the twins? The Miya’s I mean.” You asked when you saw that only Suna was chilling with a kid on each side of him. “Osamu needed to check up on his shop and Atsumu had to go to the gym. I decided to stay behind because I didn’t know how long you would take.” He replied.
“But didn’t you all carpool?” You asked and he nodded. “I can Uber. Don’t worry.” He said and you nodded and sat next to Rini. “Kids guess what.” You said happily and they both looked up from their tablets. “I go to the studio on monday—“ “THE STUDIO CAN WE GO?!” They immediately asked with bright eyes. “Uh—I don’t know guys, I’m working and Jamie has work too i don’t know if someone can watch you guys at the studio.” You said. “What time and I’ll go. I can keep them entertained.” Suna spoke up.
“I’m gonna be there for a few hours..I’ll have a read through of the script and a song audition before that..” you told him. “Wait what do you do anyways?” He asked curiously and the kids gasped. “You don’t know what mommy does for a living?! She’s the coolest mom in the world.” Rini exclaimed with extended arms to emphasize the world. “Listen to the voice of the narrator.“ Akira said and shoved the tablet in his hands. It was Peppa pig. Honestly they couldn’t find a cooler role you played in? Even the side characters were fine, but Akira had to choose peppa pig.
Rin listened to peppa as she scolded her little brother Georgie. And finally he heard your voice narrate what happened and his eyes widened. “No way, you’re a voice actor?” He asked and you nodded. “Wow imagine that. You were always so shy and now your voice is heard by millions across the world.” He teased and your face tinted.
“Well when you put it like that it freaks me out!” You snatched the tablet from his hands and the kids looked at each other with raised brows. “I’m only kidding. But it’s pretty amazing that you do that. Any big roles you’re playing soon?” He asked. “I may or may not be acting in Kimetsu No Yaiba.” You said which was a manga series you both were obsessed with when you were together. “Say sike right now.” He gasped and you gave him that I’m serious face.
“Congrats Y/N. That’s freaking amazing. May i ask who you’re voicing?” He asked and you shook your head. “That’s a secret.” You said and he sighed. “Man got my hopes up for nothing.” He muttered causing your kids to giggle.
“Momma we invited dad to the field trip tomorrow he said yes.” Akira spoke up and your eyes widened. “Wait what—“ “I didn’t necessarily say yes. I wanted to make sure it was cool with you, first. They told me that they were homeschooled and you take them to different places for field trips all the time.” He tried to correct Akira and you nodded.
“Well...I mean..if you want to go then it’s fine. We’re going to an aquarium.” You said and the kids gave him puppy dog eyes. “Alright I’ll go then. It’ll be fun and you guys can show me what you’ve learned.” He smiled softly and the kids cheered. Is this really a good idea? You don’t know. But if your kids are happy, then you’re happy.
Tumblr media
“Rin It’s getting late they have bath time and then they need to sleep.” You told him as the kids ran up and down the hall racing with Rini’s toy cars. “Alright then I’ll leave.” “I’m not kicking you out of anything-“ “No it’s fine I get it. I’ve intruded in your territory long enough.” He chuckled and you nodded. “Children of the corn! I’m leaving.” He called and immediately the kids emerged from the hallway and began whining and protesting. “You need to take a bath then go to bed. It’s late. I’m seeing you tomorrow anyways.” He knelt down on his knee to be of eye level with the kids.
“But we don’t want you to leave. I won’t sleep if you don’t read me a story.” Rini pouted and Akira nodded and you both sighed. “Fine, I’ll read you a bed time story and you will go sleep.” He told them and they nodded.
You rounded up the kids for a bubble bath and Rin was sitting on the counter as you explained what kind of kids soap you use and such. But he was mostly watching the kids play with the bubbles. “Hey Akira do you think I’ll look cool with my hair like this?” Rini asked with his messy wannable mohawk, he looked more like the grinch. Akira looked at her brother and snorted. “You look like a troll.” She muttered causing Rini to pout. “You’re so mean.” He mumbled. You got the shower head and told Akira to close her eyes as you finished washing her hair and body and she was finished. “Do you wanna try to finish Rini while I change Akira?” You asked Suna and his eyes widened. “I only know how to bathe my dog, I don’t know how to bathe a kid.” He protested. “Weren’t you watching me?” You asked. “I was distracted with the bubbles, okay.” He deadpanned and you sighed. “Rini help your dad.” You said plainly and left despite Suna’s protests.
“Alright princess, let’s get you dried up and ready for bed, yeah?” You asked the shivering girl in your arms and she nodded. You placed her on the bed and dried her hair a bit and you began to put on her lotion. You helped her into her underwear and she wanted to wear her fox onzie so you began helping her feet in when Rini stumbled in naked with Rin chasing after him with a towel. They were both soaking wet.
“Oh my god.” You sighed. “Boys.” Akira mumbled and you nodded. “You’re worse than washing a dog.” He said as he held him and dried his hair. “Woof.” Rini snickered and Suna flicked his forehead. “I’m soaking wet now.” He deadpanned to his son. You zipped up Akira after successfully placing her in her onzie and you moved on to your son. “Stop giving your dad such a hard time, he’s new to this whole parenting thing ya know?” You told him as you began to rub his face with lotion. “Akira go brush your teeth.” You told her and she pulled her dad along with her. “What do you want to wear to sleep?” You asked. “Can I wear my Fox onzie too?” He asked and you nodded. “Of course.” You replied and helped him into it too.
Rini went on his way to brush his teeth and you were met with the view of Rin helping his daughter floss and you just wanted to melt. This was so freaking cute. You don’t know if your heart could handle the cuteness. “Alrighty next victim!” Rin said and picked up Rini. He began to help him brush his teeth. You helped Akira down from the counter and she went off to look for a good book. You decided it was best to get one of Tobio’s shirts and shorts he had lying around for Rin so he wouldn’t get sick.
When Rini finished brushing his teeth, he went out to help Akira search for a book. “Are you still soaked?” You asked and Suna nodded. “Here wear this so you won’t get sick.” You tossed him some gym shorts and a random T-shirt. He gave a small thanks and you closed the bathroom door to leave him to change. “Alright where are my little foxes?” You hummed and you found your little demons kids jumping on your bed and patiently waiting to read. “Why aren’t you both in bed?” You asked and they stopped jumping and turned to you. “We wanna sleep here with you and daddy!” Rini said and you almost choked on air.
WITH RIN?! ARE THEY CRAZY OR CRAZY?
“Baby he’s not spending the night. He’s only going to read you a bedtime story then leave. You’ll see him tomorrow when you wake up.” You told them and they both had the saddest look on their faces. “But we wanna sleep with you and daddy. Please can he spend the night. Please please please!” Akira begged.
“I don’t mind if you don’t. It’s only for the night.” Rin almost whispered in your ear and you turned your head to him. “Are you sure? What about tomorrow? What are you going to wear?” You asked, “We can stop by my apartment in the morning before we head out.” He said and you raised a brow and turned back to your kids they were already comfy on the middle of your bed and you released your nth sigh of the day. “Fine, one night.” You answered and grabbed your pajamas and left to the bathroom to change.
When you returned Rin was on the left side of the bed with Rini right next to him. Akira patted your spot on the right side and you sat against the headboard of the bed. The twins had two books they wanted you both to read but they all fell asleep while you read the second one. You looked to see Rin, Rini and Akira sleeping and you can never get over how similar they looked like Rin. You quietly hopped out of bed and put the books away and turned off the lights.
You woke up to the sun shining on your face and arms around your waist. You felt a weight on your chest and you sighed and opened your eyes. You blinked a few times to make sure you weren’t seeing things but sure enough, Rin was sleeping on your chest. Just like old times and you tried to control your breathing. You don’t want to be the type of ex who yells and they fall off the bed. You realized the kids were not on the bed too and if Rin was cuddling you, then they must have been gone for a while.
“Rintarou—the kids—WAKE UP!” You quickly shook him and he opened his eyes and quickly moved away. He felt around him and he noticed the kids weren’t there. You both paused in silence to see if you can hear them but when you didn’t you quickly yeeted yourself off the bed with Rin following right at your tail. You opened the door to the twins room and you saw them in their own bed hugging their plushies. You held a hand over your chest and you leaned against the doorframe. “My heart literally dropped.” You turned to Rin.
“Mine did too. Do they usually do that?” He asked. “No, never.” You sighed and closed the door.
The twins opened their eyes and they looked at eachother from across the room. “I told you mom would get a heart attack. We’re lucky she didn’t cry.” Akira whispered. “Whatever at least they cuddled together like a nice married couple.” Rini whispered back and Akira nodded. “I hope mommy and daddy get back together.” Akira said. “They will, our plan is perfect.” Rini whispered mischievously and Akira smiled.

Our Life Snippet - Surprise Aquarium Trip
Just because the Step 3 DLC dropped doesn’t mean I’ve stopped writing for Our Life: Beginnings & Always. Figured I’m past due to post another first draft clip for those who enjoy my novelization self-indulgence.
This particular clip was of an original moment for Step 1 that I started even before @gb-patch dropped the teaser image of Cove at the aquarium. After playing Happiness in the new DLC, I now find this scene I wrote fairly amusing for various reasons that will be apparent for those who have also played it. I guess this would add a few extra lines of dialogue to that DLC scene wouldn’t it?
...
Weekends had little meaning for kids on summer vacation, except for those with parents or guardians who were off from work for two whole days in a row. For most kids, these days were an opportunity to go out and do something special with the family, such as take a trip to the movies or a theme park.
For Cove, that was the last thing he wanted if it meant spending time with just his dad.
Mealtime with his dad had become tense since the move, but this morning Cove found Cliff absolutely insufferable. First he was woken up with an obnoxiously excessive amount of cheer. The big breakfast his dad made was fine - pretty tasty actually - but it was the constant battering of conversation during the meal that grated on his nerves.
Things had finally settled into something of a routine at the new store, which allowed Cliff to take the Saturday off. His plan for the day was to spend as much quality time with Cove as possible. He came to his son with a laundry list’s worth of suggestions for fun father-son activities to share.
It was a shame that Cove rejected every single one of them.
Not all of the suggestions were bad. A few sounded kind of fun, but Cove still refused on principle. He hadn’t forgiven his dad for uprooting his entire life and taking him away from his real home and his mom. Being offered to do things that they used to do as a family with only the two of them just reminded him of how broken his family was now.
“I’m going to go play with Jamie,” Cove said, raising his voice as he rose from his seat. He was finally finished eating, so he didn’t have to sit through this annoying conversation anymore.
Cliff faltered mid-sentence at his son’s declaration - he hadn’t even gotten to finish his latest pitch. He had been so sure that a visit to the aquarium would do the trick that time. “Are you sure?” he asked, not hiding the disappointment in his voice. “I heard the aquarium has a big shark exhibit. It might be pretty cool, don’t you think?”
It did sound cool, but Cove shook his head with a displeased grunt, refusing to be swayed, no matter how tempting it was
If his dad was actually giving Cove the option to choose not to go, then he was going to reject anything Cliff threw his way regardless of what it was; it was only fair after what his dad put him through without giving him any choice in the matter.
It was clear to Cliff, as he watched his son walk swiftly away from him, that he would have to resort to drastic measures if he was going to have a day out with his son. “Hey, I have an idea,” he said as he got out of his own seat. “How about we see if Jamie can come with us?”
That suggestion brought Cove to a halt. That… actually wasn’t a bad idea from his dad for once. Jamie had a way of making anything fun, and he knew she loved the ocean as much as he did. He had little doubt that she would be thrilled to come.
The prospect of looking at all the amazing creatures the sea had to offer became just a little more exciting than it already was when Cove pictured doing it with Jamie. It would even be worth putting up with his dad.
“Okay,” Cove said, fighting to hide his smile as he looked back at Cliff. Just because he was now looking forward to the suggestion didn’t mean he could let his dad know that he was excited.
Cliff beamed at his son, easily crossing the distance between them to ruffle Cove’s hair, much to the little boy’s chagrin. Jamie saved the day once again. “That’s great! How about we head over right now and ask her moms for permission and see what Jamie thinks?”
The Leimomis were good people. Noelani and Pamila were all for encouraging the friendship between Cove and Jamie, so chances were good they would agree to let Jamie come on the trip. Sure, it probably would probably mean that it would go from just the two of them to six, but Cliff could still squeeze some father-son bonding in there; he could even offer to pay for admission for all of them to seal the deal.
As long as Cove was happy, that was all that mattered.
Father and son had barely stepped outside the house when they spotted activity at the Leimomi house. Pamela was loading something into the trunk of the car, while Jamie was walking swiftly down the sidewalk in her direction.
“Hey, good timing,” Cliff said to Cove, though his son wasn’t even looking at him. He turned to wave across the street, raising his voice. “Hey neighbors!”
Pamela looked over her shoulder and waved back. “Morning, Cliff. Morning, C-”
“Cove!” Jamie shouted happily, unintentionally talking over her mom. She waved energetically before dashing past Pamela to meet up with her best friend in the middle of the street. “Hi!”
Cove gave Jamie a shy smile. He could never quite match her enthusiasm, but it always made him feel good to see her so happy to see him. “Hi Jamie.”
Cliff grinned at the exchange between his son and his friend before shifting his focus to Pamela. “I hope we’re not interrupting anything, but Cove and I are planning on taking a trip to the aquarium today, and Cove was thinking of inviting Jamie along.”
The suggestion put stars in Jamie’s eyes, and she looked from Cliff to Cove as she let out an amazed gasp. “Really?”
Cove nodded, happy to see Jamie so excited. “Mm hmm. There’s supposed to be sharks there too.”
“Cool!” Jamie cheered as she bounced onto the balls of her feet. “I can’t wait!”
Pamela placed her hand on her daughter’s shoulder and shook her head when Jamie glanced up at her. “Sorry, kiddo, but I’m afraid that’s gonna have to wait for another day. You’ve got a lesson in half an hour, remember?”
Jamie blinked before visibly deflating with disappointment. Not only was she going to miss out on spending time having fun with Cove, but she was going to miss out on something cool as going to the aquarium. It wasn’t fair.
“Lessons?” Cove repeated, brow furrowing in confusion and displeasure. “But it’s  summer vacation.”
“Guitar lessons,” Jamie explained with a sigh. “I have them all year ‘round.”
“That’s right,” Pamela said wryly. “Jamie’s Saturday mornings are reserved except for holidays and special occasions. Sorry. Guess it’ll be just you two boys and the fishes today.”
Cove folded his arms over his chest, not bothering to hide his scowl.
Jamie looked up at her mom, giving her best puppy dog eyes. “But… going to the aquarium with Cove is a special occasion.” She made the argument tentatively as she anxiously twirled one of her pigtails around her finger.
Pamela wasn’t swayed by such adorable charms into changing her mind, but it did make her honk Jamie’s nose lightly. She chuckled at her youngest daughter’s indignant squawk at the playful gesture. “Sorry, kiddo, but Mx. Morgan is waiting, and you don’t want to be rude and cancel on them right before you’re supposed to see them, do you?”
Jamie sighed and wilted as her last ditch effort failed as well, but her mom had a good point. Her guitar teacher was a nice person, and she didn’t want to be rude to them just because she wanted to play with Cove - it might hurt their feelings.
Cliff rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he tried to figure out how to salvage the situation. He probably should have expected the possibility that the Leimomis could have other plans. “I guess it can’t be helped,” he said after a moment. “Sorry to disappoint you, Jamie. Next time I’ll try to remember to give more notice.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Pamela said with an easy smile. “We’ll just have to shelve it for another day. Have fun, you two.” Gently, she nudged Jamie’s shoulder in the direction of the car. “Come on, Jamie, or we’re gonna be late.”
Jamie reluctantly went along with her mom, but she gave Cove one last regretful look over her shoulder and waved with far less enthusiasm than before. “Bye, Cove. Have fun at the aquarium.”
Cove gave a small wave in return, but he couldn’t return the weak smile Jamie sent his way, not when he was too busy being unhappy about this development. “Bye.”
This wasn’t fair. Why did adults always have to make them do stuff they didn’t want to do all the time just because they were kids? Cove wished they were older, then he and Jamie could go to the aquarium by themselves and spend the whole day there having fun together.
Cliff tried his best to rekindle Cove’s enthusiasm for the aquarium, but it was clear that his son was in no mood to go anywhere after the one thing he wanted to do the most - play with Jamie - got cancelled. Cove never reacted well to a change of plans once he had his heart set on them.
Although Cliff was unable to talk Cove into going on an outing, he did manage to coax his son into a couple card games at home. Winning a few rounds of go fish did brighten Cove’s mood enough that the grumpy boy let a few smiles slip.
It might not have been the big father-son day out Cliff was aiming for, but he counted himself a winner anyway.

1. “I need you.”
on ao3.
“Isn’t it funny.” Shifting to put her back against the arm of the sofa, Polly swung her legs up to plant them across Jamie’s lap. She prodded at him with one socked foot, and he huffed, holding out the bowl of who-knew-what so she could take a handful. It was a bit like popcorn, she had said, which might have been helpful if he had even the vaguest idea of what popcorn was. “That when I go home, if I wait long enough, this movie will come out. And I’ll already know what happens.”
“Mm.” Polly’s hand was reaching over to the bowl again, and Jamie shoved her aside idly to take a handful for himself. Glancing down at the green and blue and purple pebbles, he closed his palm around them rather than shoving them in his mouth straight away. They were good, Polly had said, but he had not yet mustered the courage to take a bite himself, even after half the movie. If Polly had noticed, he told himself bracingly, she would have been teasing him about it by now. “Ye could tell everyone what happens.”
Polly snorted. “As if they’d believe me.”
“They’d believe ye after they saw it, though.”
“I suppose.” The smile slowly faded from Polly’s face as she turned back to the screen, absorbing herself in the movie again. Jamie wrenched his gaze back towards it too, but somehow even the bright flashing lights of the spaceships and their blinking missiles couldn’t quite hold his attention. Maybe, he thought, it would be more exciting to someone in Polly’s time, who had not seen space battles unfold in reality. It was certainly much showier than most of the spaceship fights he had seen, but it was somehow all the sillier for it.
“What if,” Polly started again, “I wanted to watch the movie?”
“We are watchin’ it,” Jamie said, grinning. “Did ye forget?”
She swiped at him, almost knocking his handful of pebbles out of his tightly-closed fingers. “I know that,” she said. “I mean when I go home. It’ll be years before I can rewatch it.”
“Do ye like it all that much?”
“That’s not the point.” But she did not seem particularly keen to elaborate, sinking back into watching the screen. Somehow it had flicked over to a sort of duel with bright, colourful swords that thudded rather than clashed against each other, but he was even more distracted than he had been before, hardly able to tear his eyes away from Polly’s face.
“Ye keep talkin’ about – about when ye go home,” he said, so softly that his words were barely audible over the humming and bashing of the swords. “Like ye know you’re gonnae get there.”
“Well -” Polly tossed her head, flicking her hair out of her face. Her eyes were still fixed on the screen, but it seemed more pointed now, like she was reluctant to look at him. “Oh, I don’t know. I just keep holding out hope, I suppose.” A smile twitched at the corner of her mouth. “Ben thinks I’m silly.”
Jamie frowned. “Does he?”
“For still thinking we might get home. He thinks – oh, I don’t know if I should be telling you this. Maybe he wouldn’t want you to know.”
“That wasnae really what I was askin’, anyway.”
“Oh.” At last, Polly tore her eyes away from the screen to face him, her cheeks dusted pink. “What were you talking about, then?”
“Och, I don’t know.” It had been so clear in his mind before, but now that he had to say it aloud, it was all melting away. Almost automatically, he shoved his handful of pebbles into his mouth, regretting it only when they hit his tongue. It would buy him time, at least – but he had been thinking of trying one first, just to see whether he liked them. They were sweet, he realised, but somehow just a little salty. Not bad at all. Maybe there had been nothing to be worried about.
And then the popping started. Tiny wee explosions, all over his mouth, ricocheting up into his brain. His eyes widened, and he wondered if he should spit the pebbles out into his hand – but suppose they started exploding in his hand, too? Or what if he swallowed them, and they kept fizzing away in his stomach forever? He couldn’t just let them sit there in his mouth, bouncing and crackling away - but what could he do?
His face must have been a sight, because Polly was laughing, taking another handful of pebbles from the bowl herself. “Enjoying them?” she asked, tossing a few into her mouth. All Jamie could do was boggle his eyes at her, and she laughed harder. “It’s alright, it goes away.”
He could only hope she was right. Clenching his fists against the fabric of the sofa, he swallowed the pebbles, wincing as he felt them slide down his throat. You were meant to wait for them to dissolve, he supposed, or else chew them up, though he had thought of neither of those things in his hurry to get rid of the popping feeling. Polly was still laughing, and he scowled at her – his second mistake. He should have known that would only make her laugh harder and longer.
It took several minutes for her to catch her breath enough to speak again. The movie had carried on to another sword fight, green smashing against red, and Jamie doubted either of them had any idea of what was going on. Wiping away tears, Polly wheezed out, “oh, I needed that.”
“Aye, well. Good.” She seemed happy enough, now. Should he really spoil it by carrying on asking questions? He could always have another handful of pebbles if she got too upset, he supposed. That seemed to have worked well enough. Glancing down at his palm, he saw that it was stained blue and green and purple from clutching at the things for so long. “I just mean – ye sound very sure that ye want tae leave.”
He had never dreamed that – well, that they would want to. Maybe it seemed obvious to them, but he had simply never thought about it.
Sure enough, Polly’s next words were, “don’t you?”
“No.” The word all but fell out of him of its own accord. It was so terribly obvious - or at least, he had thought it was. “I like it here.”
“But don’t you ever want to -” Leaning forward, she snatched up a pillow from behind her to clutch it against her chest. “Well, to go back?”
“No’ really, no.”
Polly’s baffled expression slowly turned to horror, her hand coming up to cover her mouth. “Oh, Jamie, I’m so sorry, I didn’t think – I don’t suppose you can go back, can you? After everything?”
If he was honest with himself, Jamie had hardly been thinking about – everything. Everything was a good way of putting it. “Och, no, I didnae mean that.” There was always a chance, he supposed, that his home would be nothing but a pile of cinders, if he went back there. And the place was bound to be crawling with redcoats, anyway. Still, without the Doctor, he would have had no choice but to take that chance. “I mean – I suppose I did, a wee bit. But even if it weren’t for – everythin’ – I dinnae think I’d want to.” Polly looked so much like he had grown an extra head that he was tempted to reach up to his shoulders and check. “I’m happy here.”
“You mean -” She was still looking like she could not entirely swallow it. Like he must be trying to play a joke on her. “You don’t think of going home at all?”
He shrugged. “No’ really. I mean, I miss it. But no’ like I’d want tae go back.”
Polly had talked about going home so often. And Ben, too. Just casually, but always with a sort of certainty. When I go home. When I get back. When I see them again. And every time, he had thought they were joking, or at least exaggerating. Silly of him, really.
“Ye really meant it, then,” he said. “When ye were talkin’ about the movie. Ye really think ye might see it in your own time, someday.”
“I -” Polly looked less certain now, picking at a loose thread on the edge of the cushion. Her head was bent so far down that her fringe fell over her eyes, but Jamie could just barely see her lips pursed in thought. “I don’t know, really. I mean, it’s not like we ever know where we’re going to land. We might never get back to Earth again, let alone somewhere remotely close to nineteen sixty-six. But I’d be lying if I said there isn’t a part of me that believes we’ll get back.”
“Oh.” He had expected to feel – something. Crushed, maybe. Heartbroken, even. But he just felt a terrible emptiness, the horror of not quite believing something wasn’t a dream. It had to be. Polly and Ben missed their home, of course they did. That wasn’t news to him. But he had known… or assumed, really, that travelling with the Doctor more than made up for it, as it did for him. “I need ye,” he said quietly, not quite knowing whether or not he wanted Polly to hear him. “An’ Ben. I need ye both. I don’t know what I’d do without ye.”
“You have the Doctor,” Polly said, just as quietly. Their voices were all but drowned out by the movie, but neither of them were really paying attention to it anymore, the sound fading away into the background. The heavy thing between them had dulled it down well enough. “And you’re more than capable of looking after yourself.”
Jamie scoffed at that. “I want ye, then. I want ye both here. ‘Cause if ye leave – there’s no knowin’ if we’ll ever see each other again. An’ I don’t want that.”
“You could always -” Polly paused. “Stay with us. If we left. You’d be welcome.”
Don’t make me choose between you and the Doctor, Jamie wanted to say. I can’t do that. But he could do that, more easily than he cared to admit. He loved Ben and Polly dearly, of course he did, how could he not – but he knew where he would stay, if push came to shove. And it was not with them. “We dinnae know if it’s going tae happen,” was all he said in the end. “Like ye said. We don’t know where we’re going tae land.” It might never happen. They might carry on just as they had been, perfectly happily, and he could pretend this conversation had just been a dream, an idle fantasy. It was all he could hope.
But was it selfish to hope, when Polly’s smile had so quickly turned small and sad? Was it selfish to want to keep the four of them together, when Ben and Polly wanted to go home?
“Oh, I suppose you're right,” Polly said softly, more to herself than to him. “It might never happen.”

Chapter 10: From Posing to Plus One
I adjust the numerous cushions behind me on the purple velvet chaise longue and take another sip from my glass of champagne. This luxurious moment is marred somewhat by the underwire in my strapless bra digging painfully into soft tissue. With my free hand, I surreptitiously try and manoeuvre it into a more comfortable position.
“Claire, after this we have tae get ye a new bra, fer the dress.” Geillis has noticed. She notices everything.
She is sitting on the edge of a lavender boudoir chair, so full of excitement, I can practically see the air humming around her. She can’t seem to keep still, her legs constantly jiggling while the fingers of one hand beat a tattoo on the arm of the chair. Despite all the movements, the champagne in her glass remains unspilt, unsurprisingly.
Eventually, the sales assistant enters holding aloft a large white garment bag. “Here ye go, ma pet. If ye jes’ want tae pop behind the screen over there, we’ll get ye sorted.”
Geillis disappears behind the screen, while I continue to savour the champagne and take a good look at my surroundings. This room is like being in a big fluffy cloud. The walls are white with huge white wooden open wardrobes, filled with masses of lace, frills and satin. One wall has a full length mirror set in an ornate gilt frame. The floorboards are painted white as are the shutters at the windows. The only splashes of colour are from the chaise longue and two boudoir chairs, which do look somewhat incongruous against the overwhelming whiteness, like burlesque performers stuck in a room full of angels.
But perhaps they couldn’t risk white seating. All the shuffling bottoms, fake tan and spilt wine would play havoc with pristine upholstery—less virginal and more slightly seedy and used. The velvet decadence is probably preferable.
“How’s it going, Geillis?” I call across the room.
“Fine,” a muffled voice responds.
I am certainly enjoying this experience—wedding dress shopping with Geillis. It’s not something I ever imagined doing for myself, so to share it with my best friend is great. Even when I was a little girl, I never seemed to dream about weddings. I never played weddings with my dolls— I was far too busy bandaging them up, healing their imaginary diseases and, on one memorable occasion, amputating the left leg of my Tiny Tears. (In my eight year old self’s defence, it was a necessary intervention to save her from imminent death—her leg had already turned black with marker pen and all it took was a sharp pair of kitchen scissors and some red wool to stitch up with.)
And so I am thoroughly enjoying this new experience of visiting bridal shops and choosing dresses. All the pleasure and none of the wedding planning. Geillis has already dropped a dress size due to pre-wedding stress and I hope she doesn’t drop anymore—this is our final fitting.
I take the last sip from my glass. While Geillis is still being manhandled into her dress, I quietly lean over, take her half full glass from the (white) side table, pour some into my glass and relax back against the cushions.
And just in time as Geillis emerges from behind the screen.
The expression ‘take my breath away’ is often used, but in this case it is genuine. I’ve seen the dress before. I was with her when she chose it, but to see her in it now, well, I’m speechless. I want to rush over and hug her, but of course, I can’t for fear of spoiling the pristine fabric.
It’s a simple dress. Cream chiffon pleated Grecian style with a fitted strapless bodice and a long floaty skirt full of tiny intricate pleats that make the fabric lift and swirl around her as she moves. A plain cream veil cascades from the back of her head adding to the ethereal image. She looks like a goddess.
A goddess until she opens her mouth. “What d’ye think, then? This dress is bloody gorgeous, is it no’?”
She stands in front of the mirror, and twirls around, trying to glimpse it from every angle.
I feel my eyes prick with tears. “Oh, Geillis, you look absolutely beautiful. It’s just… just… lovely. You’re lovely and it fits like a dream. Dougal is a lucky man.”
“He is. And I make sure he knows it.”
The sales assistant is hovering around, straightening imaginary creases, checking the dress. Finally, Geillis stops moving and allows her to cast a professional eye over the fit. Once satisfied, she directs Geillis behind the screen once more, for the reverse transformation.
Geillis pulls a face as, clad again in jeans and t-shirt, she sits down and picks up her glass. She views it with suspicion, before shooting me a glance and taking a gulp. I try to look innocent.
“All ma clothes are sae boring now,” she pouts. “ I want tae wear that dress every day and never take it off.”
“Not very convenient in theatre, though, love,” I console her. “And think how special it’s going to be when you put it on for your wedding.”
“Aye, I suppose ye're right. And now it’s yer turn. C’mon now.”
The sales assistant returns with another garment bag and I follow her behind the screen.
There’s something quite uncomfortable about being dressed by someone else, I decide as I stand in my bra and knickers, arms stretched above my head waiting for the dress to slither down my body. I mean, obviously my parents would have dressed me when I was little, not that I can remember that, but by the time I went to live with Lamb, I was fully able to dress myself. He would have to do the occasional rebuttoning of cardigans, or zipping up of anoraks, but that was all.
The dress slips over my head and down my body. Now is the moment of truth as the sales assistant lifts my arm and pulls up the side zip. I breathe a sigh of relief (yes, I can actually breathe); the dress fits like a glove, or rather like a dress that’s been tailored to my exact measurements.
I step out from the screen to a round of applause from Geillis. “Claire, ye’re gorgeous. Ye look stunning in that dress.”
I sashay towards the mirror, enjoying the feeling of the fabric as it dances around my calves. In style, it’s not dissimilar to Geillis’, the same intricate chiffon pleats on the bodice and skirt. But my bridesmaid dress has one shoulder and is, as I was informed, ‘seafoam’ in colour.
That name is so descriptive; neither blue nor green yet both at the same time, and, as my skirt swirls around my legs, it’s easy to picture the ocean waves lapping against my ankles.
“D’ye like it?” Geillis sounds genuinely concerned.
“I love it.” And I do, I really do.
There’s just one thing, I realise as I continue to twist around. Geillis was right. I do need a new bra.
***********
With the two garment bags safely stowed in the wardrobe of Geillis’ spare bedroom, we celebrate with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.
I curl my legs up on the sofa and watch as Geillis switches on her laptop, ready to update all her wedding preparation spreadsheets with today’s activities. She sticks her tongue out in concentration as she scrolls through all her information, finally finding the appropriate worksheets. A few taps of the keyboard and it’s done. She doesn’t switch off but continues to look at the screen.
Eventually she speaks. “Claire, I need tae know. This weekend we’ve tae give the numbers tae the hotel and I want tae do the seating plan. Are ye bringing a plus one? I mean, it’s ok if ye’re no’.”
I feel really bad about not letting Geillis know sooner. I mean, after the rugby club, it appears  that Jamie and I have somehow become each other’s ‘plus one’, but I haven’t yet decided whether to ask him to the wedding. That somehow seems more intimate—and the thought of him being interrogated by my friends fills me with dread.
“I haven’t asked anyone yet. When do you need to know?”
“By ‘anyone’ I take it ye mean Jamie? Who else would be yer plus one? Frank?” She pulls a face at that idea. “And I need tae know by tomorrow night. It doesna matter if ye dinna bring anyone…Angus isna bringing anyone either. He’d be thrilled tae accompany ye.”
I grimace instinctively. I met Angus, Dougal’s brother, at Geillis’ last New Year's Eve party and he was more than a little, shall we say, full on. I could cope with his hands, although it was rather like trying to wrangle an octopus. Midnight was a different matter as he tried to turn a polite peck into a full snog, tongue and all.
“Ok, I’ll ask Jamie tomorrow. We're going running.”
Geillis bursts out laughing, which rapidly turns into a coughing fit. “Running? Ye?” she croaks between coughs. “Oh ma love, I’d pay good money tae see that.”
******************
I don’t consider myself unfit. I try to do yoga every week and all those hours in theatre keep me pretty active. But running isn’t something I ever imagine myself doing, let alone actually enjoy.
Jamie first suggested it to me a couple of weeks ago. As usual, I didn’t have to say a word, my face told him what I thought of the idea. He then proceeded to agree with me, declaring that he didn’t think I had the stamina for that kind of exercise. I knew exactly what he was doing—a blatant attempt at reverse psychology. Did he really think I would fall for that?
Anyway, I’ve arranged to meet him in the park at our bench. I eye the coffee kiosk wistfully. It’s too early in the morning for it to be open, or indeed for anybody to be around, save a few fellow runners and some dog walkers. Perhaps, it will be open by the time we’ve finished.
I hold onto the bench and practice a few lunges, trying to look as though I know what I’m doing.
“Ye’re wobbling a bit,” a familiar voice calls from behind.
Immediately I stand up and turn to face him.
“Morning, how are ye? Looking forward tae this?” He sounds far too cheerful for this early on a Sunday.
“Of course.” I don’t tell him that usually all I want on a Sunday morning is coffee and a cinnamon bun.
He checks his watch. “Well, mebbe yer man’ll be open fer coffee when we get back.”
I don’t believe it. Are all my friends mind readers?
I shrug, trying to look like it never crossed my mind.
“Sae,” he continues. “We’ll start off wi’ 5 minutes brisk walking tae warm up, then mebbe 15 minutes alternating between slow running and walking and finish off wi’ 5 minutes walking tae cool down. I dinna want ye tae do too much as it’s yer first time and I think that’ll be more than enough fer ye.”
Here we go—Jamie and his reverse psychology again. How obvious.
“Oh well,” I reply. “I think we can do more than that. I’ll be fine.”
He smirks as he sets the timer on his watch. “OK, Sassenach, whatever ye say.”
*************
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so welcome a sight as the open shutters on the coffee kiosk. It may be my imagination but, even from this distance, I can smell the freshly brewed coffee. And, boy, do I need it.
I let my pride override my commonsense and actually ran-slash-walked for ten minutes more than Jamie had planned, finishing with a totally unnecessary sprint, or rather my pathetic attempt at one, before the cool down. And now I’m paying the price. My face is burning hot, my t-shirt is one huge sweat patch and my legs feel like they’re made from rubber.
Jamie, on the other hand, is strolling towards the kiosk looking as though he’s barely broken into a sweat. I think it literally was ‘a walk in the park’ for him today.
I sit down on the bench, shifting awkwardly as the sweat trickles down my back and between my cheeks. What I really need is a long, hot shower…
Jamie comes and joins me on the bench, his hands full with coffee and a couple of mysterious bags. He deposits his purchases between us and settles himself. I hope he’s not downwind of me. I don’t think I’m smelling my sweetest at the moment.
He passes me a coffee and a bag.
“Here ye go, I reckon ye’ve earned it. I didna ken what ye wanted. That’s an almond croissant, but I’ve a pain au raisin here if ye’d prefer.”
I accept the almond croissant and coffee gratefully.
“How d’ye feel now?” He asks as he takes a large bite of his pastry.
“I feel fine.” I lie.
“Hmm. Actually, ye did well today. Better than I thought. Ye’ll be running a five k before we know it.”
I stare at him, not sure if he’s being sarcastic, but, no, there’s a genuine smile on his face as he takes another bite of his pastry.
“Not sure about that.” I’m thinking that once is enough.
“Nonsense, ye should do this regularly. I’ll help ye, if ye like.”
“But won’t I hold you back with my slow pace?”
“Doesna matter. I run a couple of times a week anyway. I can do this as well.”
“I’ll think about it.” I break a piece of my croissant off and pop it in my mouth. It is delicious and totally guilt free. I’ve earned it.
We are quiet for a moment, both of us savouring the coffee and treats. I am also pondering how best to ask Jamie about Geillis’ wedding. I know I have to ask him today, but I don’t want him to feel obliged to attend, I need to offer him a way to decline without feeling guilty.
“So,” I begin, a bit hesitant. “I was wondering…of course, you don’t have to, if you don’t want to… but you know I’m a bridesmaid at Geillis’ wedding and I was wondering, well, if you wanted to accompany me…be my plus one.”
“I won’t mind if you don’t want to come. That’s fine too.” I add quickly.
“Ye sound like ye dinna want me tae come.” He watches my face, maybe looking for clues as to what I actually want.
“I do…but only if you want to. You don’t have to.” I’m still giving him a guilt free way out.
“But, ye want me tae come, do ye?” He looks a little bit perplexed, unsure what to do.
“Yes, obviously—“
“Well, Sassenach, in that case I accept. It will be ma pleasure.”

So about that 'Blue Bloods' episode…
I recently saw something come across my dash regarding Alex Brightman’s guest appearance on the season 11 episode of 'Blue Bloods' (The Common Good) and it reignited the vehement response I had to the episode as a whole. And, since I have this blog now, I figured…fuck it. I need to rant about it.
So that's what this is.
Take what I say with a grain of salt, of course. This show is so clearly not for me and I acknowledge that, but I went to school for and got my degree in creative writing and so much of this episode pissed me off from a narrative perspective and I just really need to talk about it. Putting it under a Read More, though, so you can ignore me if you’d like while I rage to no one in particular. Apologies in advance if you choose to read on. I'm super long-winded. Luckily I don't have pictures and this is more of just a lot of text, so…it could be longer?
So, to begin, I’ll freely admit that I’d never seen an episode of 'Blue Bloods' before this and I’ve not watched it since. I mean, if the rest of the episodes are as badly written as this one, I have no interest to either, but I digress.
Overall my main problem with the episode was how desperately it avoided ‘showing’ over ‘telling’ and, as a visual medium, that’s kind’ve a big deal. We were told pretty much every detail that was presented to us. These people love to hear themselves talk, but do little to actually show things as they happen and I believe a part of that has to do with the focus of the show itself, which is definitely unique to this brand of television. By that, I just mean that it’s not the format I might’ve expected from a show like this. Most cop shows give a lot of focus to the cases, and the intrigue you get with the characters is how they apply their own skills and knowledge to solve them, with the hi-jinks they get into along the way being more of a bonus.
This is not that kind of show.
No, 'Blue Bloods' as a show is way more interested in the cops and their familial ties than it is about the actual job that they’re doing, as shown prominently with the political plot of this episode which was also very focused on the relationship between Tom Selleck’s character and his daughter and the wholly unrelated dinner scene where they talk about lent for 2 and a half minutes and acknowledge nothing else that happened in the episode. This show doesn’t care about the job of being a cop so much as it cares about the cops themselves.
Which would be fine if I gave a shit about cops, but I don’t.
You could argue that the mentor plot is the exception to that, but that entire situation had no real consequences for the cop in question, Jamie, abusing his power. It was entirely focused on how the situation affected him and how it was fine that he’d nudged this kid to get information which ultimately led to the arrest of Dion's brother, and Dion quitting the program. Hell, if Jamie had, in his final scene with Dion, owned up to his abuse of power and left the program — to then urge Dion to rejoin so that he can have that positive outlet in his life without him there — I would’ve been way more okay with it, but Jamie faces no consequences past ‘I don’t wanna see you anymore’, which I was never convinced he actually cared about in the slightest. There's nothing cathartic about it, it's just shitty and left me feeling frustrated at the lack of consequences for the cop.
But hey, you prolly don’t wanna read me going on and on about those parts. You prolly wanna know why I hate it despite Alex’s plot — which I fully expected to love because he’s perfect and gorgeous even when he’s playing a bad guy and he was just so adorable in his lil suit and they let him keep the scruff this time, and he was all handsome an— I need to stop. That could go on forever.
Anyway, to put it simply; it was bad, but I'll definitely explain why.
Now, I don’t think any of the guests in this episode necessarily did a bad job. They still acted well enough for what they were given. I just think they had a shit script that wasn’t interested in that story line. I mentioned at the top of this that this show cared more about telling than showing and that’s a huge problem when you want me to buy a character being the culprit in your murder plot. I need evidence, not anecdotes. Cuz, yeah, by the end of the episode, I didn’t buy for even a second that Ralph did it. And it’s not because he was played by Alex who is just charisma incarnate. I can believe him playing a bad guy. I also watched his 'Law & Order SVU' episode where he scared the shit outta me. He can play a creepy and violent character very well, he just wasn’t convincing to me as a bad guy in this show.
And here’s why!
First of all, he confessed at knife point. That confession would be thrown away IRL. It’s the same problem with using torture to get information. If a person’s life is threatened or they're being harmed in some way, they’ll usually say whatever it takes to get you to stop threatening them/causing them pain. Same deal here. You can’t convince me with a confession like that.
But they didn't seem to be interested in convincing anyone as far as I could tell. They just expected you to believe it because, ‘no, didn’t you hear? He said he did it, so he did it.’ They had so many opportunities to portray this character as the shitbag that we’re told he is. Hell, great way to really implicate him? Give him a female assistant that Donnie Wahlberg and his partner overhear / walk in on him berating for something small like getting him the wrong coffee or something. Then have them talk to that assistant later on and her mention some weird behavior from him on the night of Andrea’s death. It's cliché, but it's more than what we got.
Or you could have him talk to Meghan in a super condescending voice when he approaches her after her interview later on. Or, hell, have him refer to the murder victim in a condescending way even as he talks about her death. But no. The most we get out of him is that he's maybe a little snarky and smug when talking to the cops, but that’s not enough to convince me he’s a bad dude. Frankly, his producer buddy came off as more of an asshole, if I'm being honest. Just cuz (we’re told) his character did shitty things to her in the past doesn’t mean he’s still shitty. Show me he’s still shitty. I wanna see it and I know Alex is capable of a performance like that.
Second, it’s also just…obvious to make him the culprit if we're to believe everything we're told about him. He and Andrea are described as having had beef a little while before the murder with him being abusive mentally and physically. He’s known in the community to be a misogynist and an abusive person overall. He’s the obvious suspect, but if there’s anything that Scooby-Doo taught me, it’s that it’s never the most obvious person. Like, once in a blue moon, sure — but it’s rare.
So yeah, I don’t believe that Ralph did it. You wanna know who I do think did it?
Meghan.
Alright, so bear with me. This'll prolly sound a little conspiratorial, but hear me out:
She had the motive. She confirms in the beginning of the episode that she’s also a female gamer like the victim, but that she was ‘no Andrea’. Andrea was her competition. They were (supposedly) friends and stuck together as female gamers, but Andrea was still competition. With her out of the way, Meghan’s able to rise in the ranks, if even a little bit.
She had a scapegoat in Ralph — again, the obvious suspect given his tumultuous relationship with Andrea sometime prior — and an obvious grudge against men in their community in general. And, don’t get me wrong, men in gaming can and often are hella toxic — I’m not, in any way, denying that — but she got way more emotional when talking about the men in their community than when she was talking about her supposed friend lying dead in the adjoining room.
Speaking of the adjoining room, how did she not hear the murder happening? It couldn’t have been when she was down in the bar, cuz we see Ralph there too in the crappy CCTV footage that was supposed to show him being an asshole, I think (hard to really see). Was she just fucking around somewhere else when it happened? She doesn’t mention as much that I recall (correct me if I'm wrong on that, of course). And Andrea was strangled to death. I would assume that there would’ve been a struggle with that. Are you seriously telling me she wouldn’t hear that in her adjoining hotel room? Those walls aren’t that thick. I find that kinda hard to believe. And that she wouldn’t have found her till the next morning after that, also strikes me as a little odd.
Going off on some previous points, she shows very little grief over her friend’s death. Not just in the intro scene, either, but later on as well. (Side bar: that intro scene itself was very misleading. Don’t lead with a murder plot if it only takes up less than 10 minutes of the overall runtime, kay?) The show did a pretty bad job at indicating the passage of time, but it’s implied that the convention is still happening when Meghan gets the confession out of Ralph, so it would’ve had to have been the same weekend, or possibly the same week (though most conventions I’m aware of don’t last that long — it’s usually a weekend thing, at most Thursday-Sunday — but it could be similar to AGDQ, which seems to last about a week). So, if this is only a day or so later, why would someone who is supposedly grieving over their dead friend do interviews like nothing is wrong? Wouldn't you, like, reschedule or just politely decline and say you need time to process the shock? Like, when we cut to ol’ Donnie Wahlberg calling her after her interview, she doesn’t look upset — as I imagine she might if they’d likely asked her questions about Andrea / her feelings about the murder — and she seems cool as a cucumber when she asks Ralph to go somewhere private. In fact, the look on her face indicates pretty clearly that she’s planning to do something. Specifically, not that she's scared, that she's angry.
Finally, she’s the one who’s attacking Ralph when Donnie Wahlberg and company arrive on the scene. She doesn’t seem to have any marks on her indicating that he made any move to harm her (again, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember seeing her with any marks / cuts), but he’s got a clear, bleeding cut on his face. She attacked him first and was going in for the kill.
Or…was she? Cuz right before Donnie Wahlberg pulls her into that bear hug to stop her from the attack, she doesn’t do a great job of actually trying to kill Ralph. She was close enough that a quick dart at him would’ve probably been enough to at least injure him pretty significantly — maybe even fatally — and would’ve surely led the cops to pull them apart to secure him, but she kinda just hops around a bit and screams before lunging for him. That’s a really weird way to attack when you actually want to kill someone.
But, then again, I don’t necessarily think she did want to kill him. I’m convinced she wanted that confession, but that she also wanted him in jail and was playing the part of the super sad and hysterical victim who was just so overcome with her grief that she wasn’t in her right mind. I think that’s what they were going for in regards to her character in general, but it came across as less sincere in the performance and more like the character was putting on an act. They then cart Ralph off while comforting her — despite the fact that she disobeyed a direct order from police, which should lead to her being detained as well! — and that plot ends.
So, she gets what she wants in the end. A person she despises is now in police custody, her competition is out of the way, and the publicity she might get for bringing that ‘murderer’ to justice might eventually lead to her own career getting a nice boost. I dunno, it just strikes me as her having a great reason to have initiated this over Ralph just being a misogynist who 'was really trying to kill Meghan and just got the wrong girl'.
So yeah, with what the show presented to us, I believe Meghan’s the real killer. Again, if they’d done more to show me that Ralph was a bad dude or that she was more affected by her supposed friend’s death, or if they'd just given that plot more room to breathe to show those things, I might’ve been more inclined to buy the narrative they were pushing but…as is, I don’t believe it.
That’s pretty much all I wanted to say on the matter. I had a lot of issues with the domestic abuse plot line too, but they barely gave that 5 minutes of the overall runtime, so does it really matter in the long run? This is just…my thought process of the only part of the episode I watched for and how disappointing it was for me. And yes, I timed each section of the episode to figure out how much time was given to each of the 4 plots, plus the dinner scene at the end, but not counting the intro theme, and the murder plot got just over 8 minutes, of which Alex was on screen for half of that time. He got less than 5 minutes of screen time. It was definitely worth it just because he’s wonderful and I just like seeing him on these shows, but from a narrative standpoint, it felt pointless.
Okay, I’m done. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Unless y’all wanna talk about this some more, cuz I’m so down for that.

Why the recent chapters of Attack on Titan are still good
This is probably an unpopular opinion but I just need to rant because I saw a tumblr answer here where someone actually compared the current Attack on Titan Chapters to GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8? REALLY.
As a victim of Game of Thrones season 8, I am so offended for Attack on Titan and for Isayama who is still doing a good job on delivering the story.
And a lot of my timeline really is a bubble of complaints with every new chapter released. They’re shitting on everyone dying and they’re shitting on the whole Eren killing everyone thing and so many female characters sidelined unfairly and Armin being tongued.
The Game of Thrones ending was an insult to its fans. It was lazy writing. Yams latest chapters were far GOT lazy and not a lot of what he is building up to here in the final chapters is unfounded or as illogical as Tyrion Lannister deciding that hiding people in a crypt is a good idea or Daenyrys deciding to burn down King’s Landing or Jamie Lannister going back to Circe and getting killed by rocks.
To be honest, the only thing I still have issues with is Hange dying in such a fashion (which hasn’t even been completely confirmed yet because the Beast Titan thing can still happen.)
But anyway, I’m gonna go through the complaints I see everyone on my timeline make every time a new chapter comes out and why they were pretty logical developments to the story as painful as they were.
Eren being Crazy and Everyone dying in the Rumbling
I just recently finished a rewatch of Season 3 Attack on Titan and the rumbling has been set up since then. There was one quote where “If the walls are disturbed, Karl Fritz threatens to release the titans inside the walls and flatten the world” and this was mentioned so early into the show as Season 3. And what happened at the start of the show? Colossal titan smashes walls, Eren’s mother dies, Eren goes crazy, 9 years later he starts the rumbling. Very Logical. Not at all unfounded. In fact, hinting at the rumbling so early into the story is pretty genius story writing. Making Eren responsible for the rumbling, masterful writing and masterful progression too.
Armin being Tongued
I brought this up in a previous post already but tongueing Armin like that when they wanted to kidnap him was the most logical choice. You know what’s lazy writing? Or a plothole? Not tongueing Armin because that brings up the question of “Why didn’t Armin just bite his tongue to turn into the colossal titan?”
Levi being Useless and Injured
Okay, We understand Levi was supposed to be built up to some big character. But Yo, he survived an explosion less than a week ago. Of course he wouldn’t be able to fight. And of course he’d start coughing blood and almost dying in the middle of the battle. Wouldn’t it be more of a plothole if Levi just started going beyblade against them? Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion but the fact that Yams still put a spotlight on the gravity of Levi’s injury felt far better for me than if Yams just set it aside and made Levi fight like normal. Because Levi shouldn’t be fighting like normal? Especially after being bed ridden the past 7 chapters.
“I feel like he’s just being dragged around.” The manga isn’t over, Yams will let something play out. I have no idea what it is but Yams has plans for Levi and I’m pretty sure the plans will still be better than what happened to Jon Snow.
Hange being dead
I’m probably just being a Beast Titan Theory Simp now but...  The manga isn’t over, Yams will let something play out. If Hange’s death isn’t further explained, this will definitely be a flaw in my book.
Hisu being Pregnant
As painful as this was, it had been set up since before. Eren mentioned it multiple times that he did not want to tell anyone about the royal blood because he knew they were going to turn Historia into a baby mill which was exactly what happened. Eren Kruger said the same thing when they turned Dina Fritz into a titan.  The “unfair tratment” of Historia’s character is just the mastery of a Chekhov’s gun being shot and a beloved character being the victim.
Falco and Gabi being Overpowered?
Mikasa and Eren were pretty overpowered too in the first season as kids. This is probably an Anime only flaw but Eren should not have been able to beat Annie or Reiner with the limited training he had yet we still accept that as fact because yo why not.
And Falco and Gabi swooping in to take over a lot for them is setting up to be a bigger thing. Yams will not introduce kids as important characters if he did not have plans for them. Falco being the first flying titan has been set up since chapter 90 and really, what would be the point of it if he didn’t save their ass at least once right.
The Final Battle is Being Dragged on for Too Long
So, I’m assuming you want a Game of Thrones-esque final battle where Gabi just swoops in and stabs him in the back and he dissipates into pieces like the NIght King which only lasts two episodes? And they decide to go back for the rest of the chapters and play Quidditch? The pacing is not at all bad. So far, I don’t see Isayama doing some asspull with what’s been happening. The ending will not be the happiest but we kinda should have expected that when the story started with a massacre in Shiganshina.
Why are people so surprised and offended that Yams is hurting their favorite characters? Why is what happens to our favorite characters the measure of whether or not something is trash. While I’m at it, why is how Isayama treats his characters a measure of whether or not Isayama is “messed up” or “trash” too? (Like seriously, can we put personal insults at the author out of this?)
The writing is flawed but it’s far from a mess. It’s still very tight. The progression is still very logical.  They literally introduced the show to us with a massacre in Shiganshina district and people have been dying left and right since the show started. Why are people so bothered about the blood and the gore in the finale and where their favorite characters are. Fine, we’re all attached. I’m bothered too. But why is what’s happening to the characters, a measure of whether a chapter is good or not? In fact, shouldn’t the final battle be that gory anyway? It would have just been a crazy disappointment if they tuned it down right?
It’s painful to watch our characters go through this but to be honest, at this rate, I honestly admire Isayama for having the courage to kill off and destroy characters like this left and right. In fact, the fact that Isayama is so willing to do these to his characters knowing they are fan favorites is a true testament to someone who writes for themselves more than anything and are completely faithful to their story. This is something which should actually be admired.
The characters were not at all Game of Thrones levels of butchered. The characters developed like expected and they were set up in very ingenious ways. They all just became a victim to the circumstances laid out before them which have been set up a hundred chapters ago already.
So are the people who are complaining angry about the circumstances? But the current circumstances don’t necessarily mean the chapters and the quality of the story are trash right?
So are they latest chapters trash? No they’re not. IN FACT THEY ARE SO FAR FROM GAME OF THRONES ENDING LEVEL TRASH.
Are their circumstances trash? Yes. Their circumstances are trash.
Is Isayama being lazy? To a degree.
But mind you, it has not been confirmed yet how many more chapters there will be. Isayama admitted that he hadn’t even completely storyboarded the ending. The director of the anime and the editor still have no idea when Yams plans on ending it.
I have my own qualms and complaints about the ending too and where this is going but so far, I’m seeing a net positive quality wise. A lot of the complaints IMO are unfounded.
The claim that AOT is reaching GOT levels of trash? Unfounded IMO
The claims that Isayama is fucked up, messed up an asshole over how he chooses to end his story. Completely unfounded. Why the hell are we attacking the creator over what and how he chooses to end his story?
I know a lot of people probably won’t agree with me on this but genuinely I have been enjoying the latest chapters even with my favorite characters getting hurt left and right. The quality of the story is still good, Isayama still manages to tie up a lot of the loose ends. He still manages to keep a lot of his characters in character.
Like all of you though, I’m praying the ending won’t disappoint.

Destiel Chronicles
Vol. XCIX
It was a love story from the very beginning.
Dean is in love.
(13x11/13x12)
Hello my friends!!! We almost arriving to the half of the season!
I will talk mostly about episode 14x12, the episode Dean confesses he's in love, okay. Kind of. 🤣
Let's start this mess ...
Family Love
Episode 13x11 talks about family love to point us the difference with romantic love (Dean in the firsts 5 episodes).
We have Sam depressed, because he thinks they won't be able to find Mary. Now, the one that had lost his faith and hopes is Sam. And Dean will be the one keeping the hopes up, because he just got back his angel back.
The brother go to help Donna. Donna is desperate trying to find her lost niece. Her despair and her seek is a foreshadow how Sam and Mary searching for Dean in the first episode from season 14.
The vamps wear mask, (as symbolic representation of future Dean's possesion).
Another important point here is Doug breaking up with Donna once he discovers Donna hunts monsters.
This fact could be seen as a parallel to Cassie and Dean, but also, as a premonition of Dean and Cas break up.
The parallel of depression between Dean and Sam rests on the fact that Sam wasn't suicidal.
Sam had put all his hopes in Jack and now Jack is gone, so, all the words that come out from his mouth, are examples of how he feels. His speech to Donna after Doug left, it's a recalling of Dean's speech to Patience.
SAM: Let him go. Donna, when you choose this life, anyone who gets too close, eventually they get hurt. Or worse. So let him go. He’ll be safer that way.
And then, when he's alone with Dean...
DEAN: I mean, we save people, Sam.
SAM: Yeah, we also get people killed, Dean. Kaia, for instance. She helped us and she died for it.
DEAN: Hey, look, I know you’re in some sort of a—
SAM: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, don’t – don’t… You keep saying I’m in a dark place, but I’m not, Dean. Everything I’m saying is the truth. It’s our lives. And I tried to pretend it didn’t have to be. I tried to pretend we could have Mom back and Cas and – and help Jack. But we can’t. This ends one way for us, Dean. It ends bloody. It ends bad.
Sam is now where Dean had been, but not even bringing Castiel back gives Sam faith and hopes. He had a plan, and the plan failed. So he lost hopes. It points perfectly the difference with Dean. Dean recognized he was in bad shape, he recognized to Billy he wanted to die. Because the pain of loosing the love of his life was unbearable.
"I'm in love"
Episode 13x12 starts with two sister, witches, dressed in red and yellow, (Dean and Sam colors) Jennie and Jamie. Both girls want to bring their mother back from dead just like Sam and Dean want to bring their mother back from the AU.
They use a hammer to kill the first man in the episode. The hammer represents JUSTICE, and it will be seen a lot in the next season related to Dean, trying to make justice for what he lived possesed by Michael. The one killing the man is Jamie, Dean's mirror.
Let's jump now to Sam and Dean scene. And because this is a Yockey episode, we have some books to pay attention to. Don't worry, my friend @emblue-sparks did an excellent work analyzing the books that Yockey put in this episode. You can find that meta here.
All those books played their role as a premonition of AU!Michael possessing Dean experience.
Now, keeping the Family Love vs Romantic Love mirror, we switch places again in this dialogue...
SAM: I’m just saying, Dean, Jack was our way over there, obviously, so with him gone…
DEAN: Okay, well, Jack’s been gone before. We found him once. We can find him again.
Remember when Sam said this to Dean the so many times Cas was gone?
Now, just a piece in what Dean says... Shows us how much he misses his angel...
DEAN: We should probably loop Cas in at some point.
The scene with Cas and Lucifer locked in prison, and trying to escape, is another foreshadow for Dean's inner prison. But, it's interesting how we cut this scene to pass to Dean and witches sisters, with Jennie saying...
JENNIE: Doesn’t a kiss, like, usually wake up your true love?
So Dean kisses Dean's mirror... How symbolic is this? Very much...
Remember when in season 14 I was screaming all my way DEAN NEEDS TO LOVE HIMSELF BEFORE LOVE OTHERS? To ourselves is PIVOTAL for our mental health. Talking about Dean, it's fundamental to release himself from his emotional prison. Dean needs to know HE IS WORTHY. He needs to really love himself, that's the symbolism of this scene.
Now... The scene in which Dean days "I'm in love" has a tiny prelude... We need to see what Sam is doing or thinking before his brother enters joyfully confesses it...
SAM: Hey, uh… I think you might be right. I think maybe it’s time we go ahead and call Cas, because, I mean, if…if…
Why is Cas here again? Preluding Dean's quote? Simply because DEAN IS IN LOVE WITH CAS
SAM: You all right?
DEAN: Am I all right? I’m in love.
SAM: You...Oh, are you?
DEAN: I mean, I am, like, full-on twitterpated here. Seriously, I can’t wait for you to meet her, either (...)

And the big SAMMY KNOWS SCENE, poor soul he thought Dean will confess his feeling for the angel to his brother, that's why he wheels enthusiastically to hear him. That's why he asks as if he didn't know. But then Dean goes 'her' and Sam shakes his head puzzled... Why? Because he's sure his brother lives Castiel, and Castiel's is a 'him'. Wrong pronoun.
That's when our insightful moose starts to suspect something is fishy.
Rowena and the fifth base
Another important scene was Rowena talking about the fifth base, which, everybody knows what it means...
ROWENA: (...) Tell me, did they get to fifth base?
DEAN: There’s no such thing as fifth base.
ROWENA: Oh, you poor, sheltered boy. [Dean gives Sam a confused look] Anyway. What’s by is by.
(Gif set credit @whoeveryoulovethemost )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Analyzing Dean's reaction to Rowena's wording in second meaning, we can Conclude he knew what was she exactly talking about. He swallows at the WHAT'S BY IS BY, and blinks flustered. Someone knows his secret hahaahahaha
Also, Rowena deceiving the boys, is Asmodeus playing Cas...
DEAN: Oh, I’m gonna say it. She played you.
SAM: [defensively] She played us.
This is a foreshadow of Dean recognizing in front of Cas that Asmodeus played him and his brother, they should see that coming. Dean will feel guilty and will confess it to his angel.
Another little but interesting scene was Jamie and Jennie killing each other, just the ending Chuck will reveal he wants for Sam and Dean in season 15.
At the end of the episode, we'll see Rowena releasing herself from her chains. As a representation of Dean releasing himself from his inner prison.
To Conclude:
These two episode keep playing with symbolism and foreshadows of season 14.
The scene of Dean kissing Dean's mirror shows us the idea of Healing!Dean in season 14.
Sammy definitely knows Dean is in love with Cas, fight me.
Hope you like this meta, see you in the next one!
