still on my rabbit hole of beta / unused tek content and is it me or does beta tag 1 jin look more jin like?

he has more "emotion" (and nipples) in the final version, but he doesn't look as wide - eyed.

interestingly enough, beta xiao also doesn't look as wide eyed, and even looks a bit more "real" because of this. another interesting thing is that her pigtails are longer, looking like her school alt pigtails than her default short ones from 3. i wonder what the change was for? because i might even prefer how the beta looks. my guess is that, since this was one of the first games for PS2, they wanted to show off the graphics - therefore, the wider eyes can really show how "expressive" models can be compared to the "paint on" pixelated faces of the PS1.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series initial thoughts and demo review.

Alright the demo  for the Klonoa remakes was just released in Japan for Switch, Xbox, and Play Station. I created a Japanese account just so I could take look. Now I do have a few gripes both for the demo, and the cut scenes floating around the internet right now; (mainly for Klonoa 2 Lunatea’s Veil), but uh yeah, let’s talk about it

So before I discuss the demo, I wanna go over my thoughts on the graphics and such. Klonoa Door to Phantomile looks pretty good. Everything is bright and charming, and if basing it strictly on the Ps1 original, it is a complete face lift. (Though in the remake there is a pixel filter to make it look more like the original if you wish.), now with that being said,  graphically it’s comparable to the Wiimake, the assets from the wiimake have been touched up, but the quality of the graphics remains the same, which is kinda a bummer given that the Wii version came out 10 years ago, but I digress. It still looks fun and bright.  Now cut scene wise, the cut scenes are still done using character models. Thankfully Klonoa’s model in this remake is way more expressive than the wiimake, though in my opinion, it still doesn't look quite as nice as the PS1 pre-rendered cut scenes, but besides those few gripes, which I can look past, everything looks pretty nice in my opinion. The brightness is nice and really works, for the first stage. It also isn’t overused which is something I can’t say for the second game.

And that brings us to my initial thoughts and impressions on the remake of Klonoa 2 Lunatea’s Veil. I’ve been looking at the cut scenes and man, I’ve been utterly disappointed. At least with the first game, I’m still charmed by the cut scenes and graphics, but as for Lunatea’s Veil, it’s a downgrade in my opinion. Everything is way too bright, to the point that it obscures details. I can’t help, but feel that the PS2 original that came out 20 years ago, looks better than the remake, which is disappointing to say.  If they just toned down the bloom effect or the brightness just a bit, it’d look fine. And honestly, despite the brightness being terrible, it still looks fine in some places, and I don’t think it’d be a problem for people who haven’t played the originals.

Now on to the game play. The demo includes the first two levels from Door to Phantomile, including the cut scenes, plus a random level from Lunatea’s Veil La Lakoosha. I wish they would have included a hover board level as well, but that’s more just something I wished for, rather than a real gripe. Gameplay wise the graphics look rather nice on both games, and the controls are the same as the original, but it feels a little stiffer in my opinion. I also noticed some video lag as well, which may have played a part in the stiffness. Despite that I enjoyed playing both, and feel that I could chalk it up to it being a demo, and the fact that I was playing on handheld mode on the switch, which isn’t quite as powerful as other systems. Like I said, despite the minor problems, I still have had a blast and have played the three levels several times.

So overall yeah, I had some problems and gripes with the remakes, but overall, it’s still an enjoyable experience, I hope the problems I had with it, gets patched out before the game is released on 7/7. I beg you, whoever is reading this to check these games out. Klonoa as a whole is such an underrated series and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It already doesn’t help that the game isn’t getting a physical release in the US. So please support it once it comes out, and maybe we’ll finally get a Klonoa 3!

Ultimate Guide to Patch Pants (identifying and creating)

A Comprehensive and In Depth Guide for those with a More than Passing Interest in Patch Pants So, I’m sure most of those reading have heard of crust pants, or patch pants, or whatever you want to call them. But I have never seen a total, complete and comprehensive guide for identification and creation of truly beautiful patch pants. The terms crust pants and patch pants will be used interchangeably during this guide. Note this guide will only cover more developed crust pants and will not deal with kinderpunk pants.  I have created a number of crust/patch pants and this information comes directly from experience I have in creation of patch pants, information I have been given by other people who have created what I consider quite beautiful patch pants, as well as observations of other people’s craftsmanship both in real life and the internet. I will be using pictures from a variety of sources, but all should be collected on fuckyeahcrustpants (my patch pants archive blog), and that is where I will be linking the pictures from. Creation:  This section is going to be almost entirely writing, if you want examples of what is discussed here the identification section will help. There are a few different methods of going about making crust pants, some which yield significantly more aesthetically pleasing and genuine looking results than others. Of course a given is the longer you own them, the better they get, if you put genuine time and effort into your creation they will reflect that, careful sewing and a fine understanding of a number of different stitches and their appropriate applications will assist in your ability to mend properly, darning is a useful option but it does not have a very wide spread use among punks. It is also extremely time consuming, but I personally find it produces pleasing results. The first step when one begins a pair of crust pants is either tearing/cutting holes in them (this can result in a less genuine appearance as the holes may look artificial) or one can choose to wait for holes to develop, this results in a fine patina as well as holes which look like they have genuinely developed from wear (because they have). Having a patina underneath the layers of patches also adds to the effect as patches wear away they expose the already dirt-shined interior layer.  The next thing to consider is materials, this can include almost any kind of fabric and almost any kind of thread, although careful thought for both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes should be used for the placement of each patch and what material and thread is being used to repair the hole. It is often best to use patches which are either darker than or the same color as the base pants being created (this generally results in a more cohesive appearance), or one may choose to use white or an off tan if one prefers patina/dirt shine to be more visible. It’s important to note the lighter the fabric you use the darker dirt will appear on it.

Some of the more popular options for thread on patch pants include; artificial or real sinew, waxed dental floss, yarn, very fine strips of leather, or standard thread. Waxed floss and sinew either artificial or real hold some benefits over standard thread, it is much more durable and one may use a lighter to melt the the floss to creating a seal at the end of a line of stitches.   Popular choices for fabrics include; dark denim or standard black broadcloth, oilskin, bike or motorcycle inner tube, leather (scavenged from old couches, old leather jackets, boots, etc.) and work-wear canvas. Denim and canvas are generally softer and are best for lower wear areas or areas you don’t want to be stiff, including the mid thigh, mid shin, back of the knee and crotch. On the other hand, leather, oilskin, and inner tube are much more durable and much stronger but are also stiffer and will be uncomfortable if used in multiple layers, or used in places that are normally flexible in pants, they are best for the knees, or ass and can also be used on the front of the thigh and front of the shine, but too many layers will feel weird. If one chooses to wait for holes to form there will be an inevitable order in which the pants will get patches, it will start on both the ass and the knees. The edges of the pockets, the crotch, and the bottom cuff of the pants will fail next, and after that the front thighs and shins, back of knees and the back of the thighs and shins. Patches will slowly radiate from high wear areas similar to growth rings: Estimates of age can be made simply from view by recognizing the location of and density of patches. There are a number of different techniques to repairing each of these sections of a pair of pants, generally strips of whatever material is being used sewn with a standard straight whip stitch will suffice, but one may wish to switch up their method for aesthetic variation or utilitarian purposes.  A diagonal whip stitch or a blanket stitch around pockets or cuffs is a useful way of stopping small tears or spots of wear from spreading. One may also sew a patch overlapping the pockets or cuff on both sides sewing the perimeter of the patch and doing a running stitch or line whip stitch along the seam underneath the patch.  Repairing soft pockets is something I have not seen only limited information  about but I will cover it here, one can use pieces of white t-shirt for the inside of pockets when they fail. One can attach them through the use of dental floss or regular thread, but sinew is too thick and will be uncomfortable. It is best to put knots and melted thread nodules on the side of the pocket facing away from the leg as unless long johns are worn they will rub uncomfortably against the leg. This applies to knots and melted thread nodules in general, which should always be placed on the outside of the pants for the same reason. Belt loops can be replaced or repaired with the use of a thin strip of leather simply by sewing each side of it to the spots where the previous belt loop was.   Darning can also be used on almost any part of a pair of pants, and will provide rigidity and durability to weak areas, it can be done with or without a patch, and the patch can be placed over or under the fabric of the pants. This allows reinforcement of areas you may not want to cover because of appealing patchwork at the location in question. Traditional methods of affixing patches can be used as well. A method where ones cuts around the hole, or cuts slits to fold fabric around the edge of the hole to create an additional seam underneath which the patch is sewn using a running stitch around the perimeter followed by a whip stitch around the edge of the patch. Varying  these several repair techniques will allow you to create a more interesting and textured layer of patches.  Band patches as well as zippers and additional pockets are another consideration. First I will cover band patches, generally using moderation in the number of band patches will create the most interesting effect, having too many band patches will make you look really weird and will make the pants less interesting. Selecting bands around a specific sub-genre, or sub-culture helps create a more cohesive look and allows people to gauge how much you have in common in regards to musical interest. This is definitely not a hard rule though, as varying the types of music you have can either be funny (between extremely different genres) or simply look good.  Zippers can be used for aesthetic or utilitarian purposes, but it’s more fun to have them do something useful. If one puts a zipper along the thigh it’s nice to add a pocket underneath, you can also put them over the entrance to pockets, or entirely around a leg to allow it to be detachable. Pockets can also be added where there is a slit in the original fabric of the pants shows through between two patches simply by cutting that slit and then affixing a piece of fabric or another pocket underneath.  Some people choose to put a number of coatings on their pants to assist in the development of a patina, this may range anywhere from graphite, to coal tar, to motor oil, olive oil, or coconut, to simply rubbing dirt on them. The most attractive and genuine looking patina comes from simply allowing your pants to develop dirt shine on their own, if you live kinda gross your pants will reflect this, using them as napkins during your meals and wiping stuff from other art projects, work, or travel is a good way to build up a patina as well. Patina and dirt shine will vary in appearance depending up whether a coating was applied and depending upon your environment, if you go to a lot of shows, if you’re a house punk or a train hopper, if you work in a certain environment the patina will change in thickness, shininess, and color.  Identification: There are a number of different styles of patch pants, all from different sub genres or communities within punk. Here I will display and then explain the significance of stylistic decisions made within a selection. Generally there are variations in patch pants based on geography or sub-culture. Keep in mind these are by no means hard and fast rules but rather overarching themes I've noticed. 

This is a pair of japanese crasher crust pants, they’re characterized generally by giant knee holes mainly black or dark fabric patches, they’re often sewn without the use of dental floss, although it may still be used. Sometimes pins are attached, zippers are used heavily. They may or may not have heavy dirt shine or patina. Band patches are generally used with moderation and are usually inter-community bands. 

This is a pair of a slightly more modern style american traveling punk patch pant, they often focus more on browns and off-greys for patch color as well as utilizing white which eventually turns an off brown or black due to patina. Band patches may be used moderately to heavily depending on the person. Zippers are used more sparsely. Larger patches are generally used and the use of leather, bike inner-tube, and oilskin is much more common. North American traveling punks as depicted here will also often use overalls rather than regular pants, these are referred to by people in the traveling community as “bibs”. 

This is a pair of classic crust/stench core pants from the UK. They are characterized by heavy dirty shine, almost all large black or very dark brown patches, few band patches, light use of zippers. They also often seem to have cargo pockets, which isn’t as common on other styles.  Well that pretty much covers the 3 main styles,  there are many other variations from all over the world but these are the 3 that stuck out to me as being highly influential.  Conclusion: I hope this guide has been useful to anyone wishing to start a pair of patch pants of their own, or that it has simply been an enjoyable read for anyone who is  interested in the topic! I had a lot of fun writing this. : )

Lu Jinghe hadn’t been lying; the skill he had shown while drawing his own tattoo had been stunningly impressive.

Lu Jinghe: Think you can trust me now?

MC: Yup, I’m all yours!

Lu Jinghe: Sit over here then. We’ll start immediately.

MC: Okay.

I sat down in front of him, copying his earlier actions by rolling up my sleeve before sticking my arm out.

He gently took my hand. He observed my hand with a keen eye before taking in a deep breath, lowering his head once more as he started drawing. But this concentration of his was different from before; I could tell that he was handling my arm with utmost care.

Lu Jinghe: The pigment used in this Tattoo is quite special so you might be allergic to it.

Lu Jinghe: Tell me if you feel unwell at any moment in time.

MC: Okay…

Lu Jinghe: ……

Not another peep came from him following that. He was completely focused on drawing my Tattoo.

He skillfully maneuvered the brush, each stroke gentle and weighted. The way he was acting was almost as if he was holding a rare treasure in his hands. Looking at the expression on his face as he furrowed his brow in concentration, I couldn’t help but to relate it to the artists who had painted the Church murals during the Renaissance Period.

Was this how they looked whilst they painted the gods? Not just sincere, but more…affectionately so…?

MC: Lu Jinghe…

Lu Jinghe: …Don’t move, or I might miss a stroke.

MC: …Okay.

I shuddered as some of the stiffer bristles of the brush’s nib brushed against my skin. I couldn’t tell if what I felt was from the nervousness of getting my first Tattoo, or if it was from him, who was clearly acting extra serious and extra gentle in front of me.

All I could feel was scorching heat, burning forth from my heart to my skin, just like a Prairie Fire.

Lu Jinghe: Don’t be so flighty, it’ll be done soon.

MC: Can I say something?

I decided to find a topic to talk about, in an attempt to alleviate the inexplicable warmness in here.

Lu Jinghe: Go ahead.

MC: You haven’t yet told me just what this Semi-permanent Tattoo is.

Lu Jinghe: This is derived from a Traditional Handicraft; you can think of it as a type of Body Painting.

He lifted his head to glance at me, dragging out the syllabus as he spoke.

Lu Jinghe: But what makes Tattoos different from Body Paint is that it has the essence of emotion within.

MC: …You mean, like how couples tattoo each other’s names on the other as a form of expression of their love?

Lu Jinghe: That’s only one of the many.

Lu Jinghe: The meaning behind a Tattoo doesn’t always have to be how it’s drawn. It is it’s own expressive medium.

Lu Jinghe: The needle that pierces into your skin brings pain, also leaving the imprint of unspeakable feelings in its wake.

Lu Jinghe: All these other feelings that lie behind the Tattoo with accompany you for life, until the fateful end.

MC: How romantic…

Lu Jinghe: But those are all Permanent Tattoos. I’m afraid this one you have here will be completely gone by the time you go back up to Court.

Lu Jinghe: It may have a short life-span, but I hope you’ll always remember it.

MC: Don’t worry, I will.

Lu Jinghe: Good then…

He released his hold on my hand.

Lu Jinghe: It’s done. Take a look for yourself.

MC: This…looks similar to the one on your arm, but not quite?

Lu Jinghe: Yup. Take a closer look at the Lisianthus Flowers you have; what do they look like to you?

MC: …What do they look like?

I was full of questions as I bent down to take a closer look at the artwork on my arm.

Lu Jinghe: Yes, now try turning your wrist.

MC: ……

MC: Oh! I know, it’s “α”!

I turned my wrist just like he directed, the huge Lisianthus Flower following. I found something resembling a “α” between the leaves below the Flower when I turned my wrist side-to-side.

Lu Jinghe: That’s right, and the one on my hand…

He flashed his own Tattoos, pointing to a certain part of the design.

Lu Jinghe: An “ω”!

MC: This is way too magical!

Lu Jinghe: That’s not all there is to it too. There’s another symbol hidden between these two drawings.

MC: There’s a 3rd!?

I was taken by surprise at his revelation. He was able to hide 3 different ones in such a normal looking Flower?

Lu Jinghe: Well, it’s pretty normal for you to be unable to spot it, because the third one…

He suddenly lined his arm up with mine.

Lu Jinghe: Looks like this.

The two flowers became one when he joined them together, forming an odd symbol of sorts. I carefully observed the lines and gradually, a bold, but pretty good idea of what it could be came to mind.

MC: …It can’t be a…”∞”, now…can it?

Lu Jinghe: As expected of the Lawyer big sister, you saw though my design at a glance!

MC: But why put the Flowers together with those Symbols? They don’t seem to have any co-relation with each other.

I took the opportunity to ask him the question that had been festering in my heart. But Lu Jinghe only looked at me silently for a while before rolling his eyes. I had absolutely no idea what he was thinking about.

Lu Jinghe: “α” and “ω” are the first and last letters of the Greek Alphabet, respectively.

After that, he opened his mouth to speak once more.

Lu Jinghe: And when both images are placed together, it shows an steady, but endless path.

Lu Jinghe: And if we add on the Flower Language behind this particular flower…

He paused for a while.

Lu Jinghe: “The love I have for you is true and endless; Everlasting, from the beginning till the end of time itself”

MC: ……!

Lu Jinghe: …That’s how it’s explained in Literature.

MC: ……

Lu Jinghe: This is something that was originally engraved on the rings of a couple. I only used 2 of the symbols and re-designed it.

Lu Jinghe: I never had the chance to try it but I’m glad I could whip it out for a test today.

MC: So…I ended up being your Guinea Pig?

Lu Jinghe: But aren’t you pretty fond of this image too? …It doesn’t matter if you were my Guinea Pig or anything like that…

He turned his head, feeling slightly guilty.

MC: …It’s fine, I won’t roast you for it this time.

MC: But this picture’s really beautiful! Thank you, Lu Jinghe!

Lu Jinghe: So long as you like it.

I returned my gaze back to the Tattoo’s design, observing it with renewed interest. And that’s why I failed to notice Lu Jinghe’s small intake of breath as he silently whipped out his cellphone.

MC: But this picture’s really beautiful! Thank you, Lu Jinghe!

Lu Jinghe: So long as you like it.

Xiao Jin: You guys done?

Xiao Jin, who had been waiting for us knocked on the door before opening it a peep, poking his head inside.

MC: We’re done. I’ll be leaving the Stamps to you then.

Xiao Jin: Not at all. Just stay around and chat a little, I’ll just be a jiffy.

He took the booklet and closed the door to the Experience Hall back up again after he said that.

MC: He’s really enthusiastic.

Lu Jinghe: He’s always been like this ever since he was in school.

Lu Jinghe: I really did trouble him today.

MC: How long have you know each other?

Lu Jinghe: He was a Graduate Student under my teacher back when I was still studying in Florence.

Lu Jinghe: But, there was a period of time where I didn’t see hide nor hair of him.

He gave a half-hearted sigh.

Lu Jinghe: He was busy with his own workplace after graduation and after I went back home…I didn’t really have much time to contact him either.

MC: But you two look like you get along really well.

Lu Jinghe: At that time, we were the only two people who came from the same country among the few students our teacher had.

Lu Jinghe: So we had more common topics to talk about, and we gradually became friends.

He looked at the far-end of the place, his dark orbs flickering with emotions.

Lu Jinghe: Back then, Xiao Jin and I would often group along with a couple of other friends.

Lu Jinghe: We’d create masterpieces together, share thoughts, insights and even have little competitions with each other when we felt like it.

Lu Jinghe: Those times were really the height of freedom, where we were free to roam and soar to new heights as we pleased…

Reminiscing such memories made a fond but peaceful expression appear on his features. Although he didn’t out-right say it, I could still feel his inner longing to return back to those times.

MC: That must have been some wonderful, memorable, memories.

Lu Jinghe: Yup. They are very special, and very happy memories.

Lu Jinghe: I don’t think I’ll ever get such a simple and carefree time in my life ever again…

He laughed bitterly at that. He seemed to think that it was all just a small and trivial matter, seemingly unbothered by it, but it left an odd feeling in my heart.

My gut urged me to say something to him.

MC: Lu Jinghe, you…

Not waiting for me to finish speaking, his cellphone suddenly vibrated to life.

Lu Jinghe: ……

MC: What’s wrong? Is it urgent matters relating to PAX?

Lu Jinghe: Wait here for a while, I’m going to go pick this up.

MC: No worries, your work comes first.

He nodded, answering the call on his way out. I watched his figure disappear through the door, swallowing the words that had been on the tip of my tongue.

Waiting in boredom all by my lonesome, it wasn’t long before Xiao Jin, who went off to get our Stamps made an appearance again as he returned.

I took a photo of the Stamp and sent it to Cheng Cheng, confirming that I had completed the thing that was of top priority today. While waiting for Lu Jinghe to return, Xiao Jin and I started talking about the Tattoo I had on my arm.

Xiao Jin: As expected of  “The Amazing Lu Jinghe”!

He was also excited after having understood the mystery behind the Lisianthus Flowers.

Xiao Jin: Only he can think up of something so mysterious.

MC: The Amazing Lu Jinghe?

Xiao Jin: It’s the nickname all of us from Florence dubbed him. There weren’t many people who were as talented as that guy.

MC: Honestly, he’s even able to draw a Tattoo this well? His artistic talents really surpasses my expectations.

Xiao Jin: Talent plays a part as well, of course; but Lu Jinghe’s willingness to work hard is the top 1 or 2 in our school.

Xiao Jin: But it’s truly a pity…

He breathed a light sigh.

MC: A pity? You mean, him?

Xiao Jin: Yeah. I’m pretty sure he must have an immeasurable amount of stress and responsibilities on his shoulders now.

Xiao Jin: I’ve never once seen that cheery smile on his face ever since then; the joyful kind that comes with finding your inner-self and enjoying it…

He never opened his mouth again after that. I recalled what Lu Jinghe had said earlier and the feeling I felt then re-emerged from the depths of my heart once more.

What exactly was he feeling, to have let shown such an indifferent smile earlier?

Xiao Jin: But I’ll have to thank you today, for I don’t think I’d ever have gotten the chance to let him let loose if it wasn’t for you.

MC: Let loose? Thank me?

I was utterly confused as to why he was even trying to thank me.

MC: …Wait a minute, do you mean that everything that happened today…

I was told to re-queue and it had somehow turned out to be a DIY Tattoo experience…

MC: You mean, you were pulling the strings all along ever since we went to queue again!?

Xiao Jin: There are some things in this world you’re better off not knowing.

MC: ……

Lu Jinghe: What are you guys talking so happily about?

Lu Jinghe had already ended his call while we were both conversing with each other and returned.

I scrutinized his current expression and found nothing unusual.

Xiao Jin: Nothing. We were just making casual talk.

He blinked at me meaningfully.

Lu Jinghe: Right. Do you have any other arrangements after this, (Y/n)? Do you want me to send you to the Exchange Counter?

MC: Speaking off, Cheng Cheng just sent me a message saying that the Exchange Period’s already over.

Lu Jinghe: Is that so…pity, really.

MC: But…

I recalled the silly words Xiao Jin had told me earlier. Looking at Lu Jinghe in front of me, looking a little distressed, I secretly made a decision.

MC: How about we go round the other Experience Halls and try them out? I’ve not gone to a whole lot of them yet.

Lu Jinghe: ……

Lu Jinghe: Okay!

After bathing, I sat on the sofa, listening to the news as I folded the laundry. My eyes fell to the Lisianthus Flower on my arm as it moved into my field of vision, making me halt in my movements.

MC: This Tattoo…it feels like something incredible no matter how you look at it…

MC: It’s a pity that it doesn’t last long…

I sighed regretfully as I remembered what Lu Jinghe had told be regarding it’s life-span. And then, I suddenly remembered something that I had forgotten for a long time.

MC: …So why didn’t I take a photo of it as a memory…?

MC: If I don’t take it today, I fear the Tattoo might already be gone by the next time I see him again.

I couldn’t help but to feel that it was all such a pity that those two images would never see the light of the day again once they were gone for good.

MC: Forget it, it’s gone if it’s gone. Maybe I’ll have another chance to do thing again in the future…

I heaved a long suffering sigh.

MC: This kind of Tattoo doesn’t last long so it’ll probably be completely erased by the time we see each other again.

MC: It’s really a pity.

Lu Jinghe: Actually…I’ve already taken a photo.

MC: Really!?

His reply made me perk back up in joy.

MC: Could you send me a copy? I want to keep one to remember it by.

Lu Jinghe: Hmm…Then, beg for it. Beg, and I’ll send it your way.

Lu Jinghe: I’m really relaxed and happy when I’m with you.

Lu Jinghe: So don’t refuse me, big sis.

MC: ……

I could vaguely hear him breathing on the other end of the line, but none of us said anything.

MC: I…

Lu Jinghe: I’ll send the image to you in a moment so make sure you check if you get it.

Lu Jinghe: I’ve got a conference call incoming so I’m hanging up first.

He sounded a little rushed and flustered, unwittingly calming down as I felt the small urge to laugh.

MC: Go do your work then, see you again someday.

Lu Jinghe: Yeah, see you again.

Not long after we ended the call, I received the photograph of our completed set of Tattoos. Maybe he had been a little nervous while snapping it, for it was a little blurred. But the wonderful visual effect it provided blended in really well with the design it depicted. Looking at it, I felt a little lost.

The purple Lisianthus Flowers bloomed silently in the center of the screen, it’s vibrant colors standing out starkly from the rest of the room.

MC: “The love I have for you is true and endless; Everlasting, from the beginning till the end of time itself”

I recalled what he had previously told me.

MC: That’s so romantic; I really hope I…

MC: Wait a second, something’s not quite right here…?

MC: If that’s true, then doesn’t that make this a Couple Tattoo?

MC: Lu Jinghe! You baited me again!

Realizing that I had been baited into another one of his “ploys” hook, line and sinker, I felt ashamed and angry at having fallen for it; but I subconsciously stroked the tattoo on my inner forearm with my hand.

I don’t know why, but I wish it’ll disappear a little slower.

A/n: I wrote angst! It’s not much, but I did it. :) I don’t write a lot of just Wilhemina x Reader, but when I read this sentence prompt I couldn’t stop thinking this is something she would definitely say. So I hope you enjoy!

29. “If you say Halloween one more time-” “You’ll kiss me.”

“Absolutely not.”

That’s your girlfriend’s answer when you ask any question alluding to any kind of decorations for Halloween. “Awe come on. How can you say no to having cute little pumpkins around the house?” You tease, watching as she prepares her morning coffee. The red head stops what she’s doing and looks to you through her elegant, wire-framed glasses. “Easy,” she replies with a smirk, “no.” Then she returns her gaze to her travel mug, placing the cap on before she picks it up and starts to walk towards the front door.

“It wouldn’t be much!” you call out, trailing behind her. “Just a couple things, I promise.” The woman in purple stops, looking in the mirror to make sure every hair is in place and her makeup is flawless. While she does, she replies, “You say it will be only a couple things, but I know you all too well, my dear. We’ll have decorations all over cluttering our apartment and I am not interested.” Well…You bite your lip, knowing it’s true, but pipe up, “But it’s Halloween! It’s like the greatest time of year. Surely some Halloween themed items won’t be horrible. It may even get you in the spirit of Halloween.” Wilhemina finishes slipping her feet into her heels and warns, “If you say Halloween one more time—”

But you cut her off and say, “You’ll kiss me.” Then a giggle escapes your lips as your girlfriend shakes her head and murmurs, “What am I going to do with you?” and her dark lips threaten to curve into a smile. She puts on her lavender coat and takes her briefcase in the hand that doesn’t hold her coffee tumbler.

You open your mouth to plead your case further, but she pecks your lips and softly, but firmly says, “No decorations.” A whimper escapes as she commands you in a low growl and you find your cheeks warming in arousal. But you lower your eyes in submission and nod in understanding. The red head straightens up and says, “I’ll see you tonight.” You look to her and give her a smile before replying, “Love you.” She gives you a reserved smile, already steeling herself up for work. “Love you too.” Wilhemina murmurs before stepping out…

By mid-afternoon, you look to your car keys and the thought runs through your head of just going out and getting a couple things. Would it be that big of a deal? She may not even notice. But you walk away, shaking your head. You would never want to betray her trust like that.

Maybe if you did something, she would change her mind? You pull out your phone and text her, “What if I did something for you? Maybe then we could get some things for Halloween?” Immediately the text says read and you see the three dots, hoping she will think of something. But you let out a groan of frustration when you see her response, “I said no.” You leave that idea behind and text back, “Ok.” Before you begin devising another plan to get your decorations…

At around 4:30, you hear the door unlock and step into the entryway to see Wilhemina entering, but her shoulders are slumped, and lips pulled into a slight frown. Even though you can tell she’s tired, you have to ask one more time. So, as you come up to her and hold out your hands to take her briefcase and coat. Once she hands them off and you say, “I think a couple of pumpkins would look cute right over there—”

“I said no!” Wilhemina growls, making you flinch. Her cheeks flush as she continues, “How many times do I have to tell you we aren’t wasting money on crappy decorations for some stupid holiday!” Your eyes glaze over and your bottom lip trembles, but you decide to let it be and nod in understanding before quietly saying, “I-I’ll let you finish your work and make some dinner.” Then you keep your head bowed and head towards the kitchen.

As soon as Wilhemina sees your glassy eyes and the slight tremor of your bottom lip, she regrets the words that came out of her mouth. But before she can muster up the words to apologize, you’re around the corner. So, she lets out a sigh, disappointed in herself and walks to her office, stuck with the image of your heartbroken face emblazoned on her mind.

You stir the boiling water with noodles floating around and keep an eye on the simmering meat sauce, the cooking helping you calm down. In the end, you don’t cry. Mina was tired and gave you an answer at the beginning of the day. You sometimes forget that your girlfriend is like a skittish cat in a lot of ways and if you poke and prod at her too much she’ll scratch back in defense. Your thoughts get interrupted by the timer going off. So, you dish up the spaghetti on two plates and tell Wilhemina dinner is ready.

The woman in purple enters with a stiffer gait than usual, but you keep quiet, sure she is still annoyed. However, as you eat, you try to lighten the mood by asking, “How was your day, Mina?” She looks down to cut up her noodles as she answers, “Work was worse than usual. My bosses were bothering me all day. But it’s been worse.” Then you both go quiet with only the sounds of your forks and knives conversing with each other. But you still feel the tension between you two, so you clear your throat and say, “Did you—”

But Wilhemina says your name, making you stop and look to her. The red-head’s eyes are softer than usual and her gaze drops. But she forces her eyes to look up to yours before asking in as gentle of a voice as she can, “Are you really wanting to get some Halloween decorations?” While you hear the strain in her voice, you know she’s trying, and it makes you feel warm inside. You swallow and quietly reply, “Y-yes. I would like some.” But your gaze falters and you go back to eating, trying to calm your nerves.

As you do, your girlfriend watches you and finds herself saying, “I was thinking we could go out and buy some decorations after dinner.” Immediately she realizes what she just did and inwardly scolds herself for acting so rashly, but seeing you look to her with wide eyes and a hint of a smile makes her stop. “A-are you sure?” you ask. She nods and quietly says, “What I said earlier—I didn’t mean…what I meant to say—”

You reach out to take Wilhemina’s trembling hand and she looks down before saying, “I’m sorry I hurt you.” You squeeze her hand and intertwine your fingers with her cool ones, knowing how much it took for her to say that. Then you soothe, “I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, honey. I shouldn’t have kept pressuring you so much. That was unfair for me to do.” Her head cautiously lifts, and she looks to you, her eyes soft and unguarded. “I love you.” You murmur, giving her a smile and squeezing her hand in yours. The woman across from you gives a shy smile and replies, “I love you too.” And you notice her whole body looks less tense. So you finish your meal and Wilhemina takes you out to pick out some Halloween decorations…

You let out a sigh of contentment, sitting across Wilhemina’s lap with your left side leaning against her chest. It wasn’t often that she offered to hold you like this, but you love it whenever she does. Everything has a purple glow from the string lights around the room that look like bats--Mina’s choice. Her right hand mindlessly brushes up and down your back as she reads the book in her left hand. You look up to her and feel tempted to kiss her, but also don’t want to disturb her quiet time.

“Do you need something, darling?” She asks, always so observant even as she reads. Your cheeks warm as she gives you a side-eye glance and you reply, “I don’t need something. But I wanted to thank you for taking me out tonight to get decorations. It means a lot to me.” The red head marks her page before setting her book aside. After, her gaze returns to yours and she murmurs, “You’re welcome. I hate to admit this…but the decorations don’t look that bad. In fact they look pretty good.” At that you giggle and snuggle further into her chest. Then you feel your girlfriend’s arms wrap around your middle and she teases, “So are you in the Halloween spirit now? Whatever than means.” You smile and nod, the smell of the pumpkin candle on the side table filling your nose. Wilhemina gives a light kiss to your forehead before softly saying, “Good.”

But she clears her throat and says your name making you look to her. “But if anyone asks, you didn’t get so much as a pumpkin from me.” At that you smile, but assure her, “Of course. My lips are sealed, Miss Venable.” Then you place a kiss on her cheek and you both go quiet, relaxing under the glow of your different lit up decorations.

Tower Law is applied to any initiates, no matter where the accused offence occurred and to anyone who has committed an offence within the region around Tar Valon over which the White Tower claims control, although non-initiate cases involving all but the highest ranking accused are handled by Tar Valon’s civil courts.

An accused cannot be tried twice for the same offence, although this can be set aside for one time only if the original trial is decreed by the Amyrlin Seat or the lesser consensus of the Hall to be seriously flawed in some way. “Conviction or exoneration in a lower court on any charge or accusation means that the same charge cannot be brought before a higher court unless there is evidence (or a strong supposition?) of tampering or some sort of malfeasance on the part of the lower court.”

“Neither the Seat of Rebuke nor the Seat of Pardon are without dangers before this court; the Seat of Pardon will receive a penance on a conviction—sometimes the same sentence given the accused!—and on an acquittal, the Seat of Rebuke will receive penance, which also can be as harsh as the sentence for conviction would have been. This means that whoever is appointed to these posts has a very high motivation to do a good job!”

The High Court of the Tower comprises the Amyrlin Seat sitting as judge and the Hall of the Tower as jury. A minimum of eleven Sitters must be present, with at least one from each Ajah and the lesser consensus is required for a verdict, although more serious crimes usually require the greater consensus or at least unanimity of those Sitters present. Only the Amyrlin Seat can call the High Court and it must form when she calls it, although sometimes only the minimum number of Sitters turn up. The Sitters are allowed to ask questions directly in the trial. An appeal of the verdict of this court is to the Amyrlin Seat personally. Her decision on an appeal can be overturned by the greater consensus.

The Low Court of the Tower is the second highest court, and the Sitters sit as both judges and jury. The Court must form if at least one Sitter from each Ajah or all three Sitters from three Ajahs make the request; they do not need permission from the Amyrlin Seat to form such a court. The court otherwise functions as the High Court does. Only the Low and High Courts of the Tower are allowed to give the death penalty and only the High Court can impose a penalty of stilling. Higher courts are normally formed to try more serious offences and the penalties handed out by successively higher courts are usually more onerous.

“When the Hall sits on removing an Amyrlin, a Keeper, or a Mistress of the Novices, it might also be considered a court, but a special court, with special rules. For one thing, the greater consensus, unanimity, is required. Traditionally, the entire Hall must sit on these particular "courts" (with limits as stated later), but the law does not so state clearly, and there have been instances where fewer have done so, as when Elaida arranged for Siuan to be deposed by a bare quorum of eleven. This is considered a very bad violation of custom, however. In the instances of the trial of Amyrlin or a Keeper, she need not be allowed to face her accusers, nor even to be informed that she is on trial, and in a departure from the usual requirement that all Ajahs be represented, the Ajah from which the accused was raised is forbidden to take part on the trial or the voting and, as in the case of the accused herself, need not even be informed until after the event.

Three Sitters may form a court on their own, a Sitter's Court, so long as no two are of the same Ajah. This sort of court is the third highest. It also can be appointed, as an investigative body. They may investigate, ask questions, and propose charges to the entire Hall for trial. By law, once they declare themselves as a court, they are allowed great access and freedom in their investigation and their questions must be answered. By tradition, this court is supposed to be investigative only—like a sort of small grand jury —but as the law is written, they may also suggest a sentence. They may name a defender and a prosecutor, or they may assume these roles themselves. They do not have to be appointed; they simply form a court because they believe there is need for one. In these cases, they are supposed to refer their findings to a higher court, but in fact, considering that the higher courts do usually pass stiffer sentences, a sister may actually ask even this informal court to deal with her case entirely. At least if she thinks the evidence is such as to ensure her conviction in the higher court. Conviction or acquittal is by a vote of at least 2:1. Appeal from such a court is first to the Hall of the Tower as a whole, requiring the lesser consensus to overturn, and then to the Amyrlin Seat. This court is most often formed to investigate or bring charges against a Sitter, but can investigate other crimes as well. The ability to form this court is not a completely unchecked power. A sister can demand trial before a higher court, and if she is acquitted, the members of the court which brought charges against her will be given penances which can be, and often have been, as harsh as the penalties for conviction under the charges brought.

Any five sisters may be formed into a court, simply called a court, the fourth highest (lowest) in ranking, with three sitting as judges, one as the defender, and one as the prosecutor. The only restriction is that at least three Ajahs must be represented among the five, so long as it is not a court internal to an Ajah, which it can be. A vote of 2:1 among the judges convicts or exonerates. Such a court may be appointed by the lesser consensus of the Hall, or within an Ajah, by the head or heads of the Ajah. Any sisters also may, on request from the involved parties, form such a court to judge a dispute between two sisters or charges brought by one against another; in such case, all sisters involved in the dispute must agree to a court being formed. Sitters are exempt from such courts under normal circumstances; the only exception is when charges are brought within an Ajah; in that case, the Sitter's court is appointed by the head or heads of the Ajah from within the Ajah. Sentences within the Ajah, and indeed the trials themselves, are usually kept secret within the Ajah. Appeal of sentence from this court, excepting one within an Ajah, is first to the Hall of the Tower, requiring the lesser consensus to overturn, then to the Amyrlin. Appeal within the Ajah is to the head or heads of the Ajah.”

For the charge of claiming another Ajah, a court of five sisters of the Ajah offended against is appointed by the head(s) of that Ajah. There is no appeal in law to the sentence of this court.

“Disrespect to the Amyrlin Seat is prohibited by law. Strangely, obedience to the Amyrlin Seat is not required by law. "Respect and reverence" (though not "the greatest," as with the Amyrlin) are required toward Sitters.”

A physical assault on a sister is a crime and the aggressor is always punished, whatever the circumstances, but the sister that was attacked is also punished if it was judged that she provoked it or if she could have avoided it and did not do so. If one or both sisters used the One Power in the fight, the penalty is a public birching before the assembled sisters and perhaps additional penances.

Some of the Tower laws regarding rebellions are secret.

“In an effort to avoid breaking the woman's spirit—a broken woman will not last as Aes Sedai, nor will it be likely she could even pass the tests—the punishment is coupled with strong encouragements of every sort to convince her not only to bear up under her punishments but that she was wrong to try to run away and that she should and must remain.”

Those judged guilty of treason—betraying the Tower or its leadership—are usually executed, whether initiates or non-initiates of the Tower. Birching before the assembled sisters followed by a year and a day of penance is the minimum penalty for treason.

While trainees who fail the test for Accepted or Aes Sedai and survive, or are too weak in the Power to pass a test, are put out of the Tower, those who have very severe and ineradicable behavioural problems such as inability to conform to the rules or to cooperate with others, persistent lying, persistent refusal to obey orders or to learn or persist in criminal activity are put out of the Tower once they can handle the One Power safely. Every effort is made to remove or at least control behavioural problems in initiates. The Aes Sedai balance the desire to keep channellers versus the desire to remove someone who may bring the Tower to discredit. The deciding factor is often how likely the latter would happen, ie the likelihood of her getting caught.

“The maximum possible penalty for treason against the White Tower, allowing for all options, is to be birched, serve the penance, then be stilled, followed by beheading. Adding beheading to stilling might be considered overkill, but this is the maximum.”

A question of war in the Hall cannot be shelved but must be answered before any question after it, and requires only the lesser consensus (with every Ajah being represented) to be passed by the Hall. Only the Amyrlin can ask the Hall to consider a question of war.

The greater consensus is usually required to end a state of law.

Chapter 1 – Working

    “Thanks for dining with us. Please visit us again.” Ieyasu Tokugawa gave a barely enthusiastic parting wave as the last group from the dinner crowd made their way to the exit. The customers were not really paying attention to him, and Ieyasu could only barely stop himself from hurrying them out. Then, the door to the restaurant closed with the familiar tinkling of the front bell. Quiet finally settled and Ieyasu breathed out a sigh of relief.

    Dinner rush was usually the busiest and nosiest part of the day. People were always hurrying to eat or karaoke or shop away the accumulated stress from a full day at work. Or all three. And the night crowd that came into their restaurant sometimes had just been to all three. Not that Ieyasu was begrudging them those small luxuries. But he had to admit, ever since he had started working at a restaurant, he had very little free time. And what little he had, he knew he would spend differently.

    Setting down the knife and the carrot he had been slicing, Ieyasu took the nearest dish box and made his way towards the tables to clean up the mess left behind. That particular group of customers had obviously never given thought to the woes of the service industry given the state of their table. Working to clean it was one thing, but having to sweep and mop up underneath was already thirty minutes taken from his already tight schedule.

    With a grunt, Ieyasu placed the dish box in the sink, soaking the empty dishes in water and anti-bac for later. Then, he turned back to the carrots, and continued on, the silence now broken only by the rhythmic thudding of his knife against the chopping board.

    Ieyasu worked faster with the quiet; his hands moving more swiftly now that his concentration was focused only on just one task. Whenever he was left alone to handle the restaurant withcustomers, he had to position himself in the middle of the open kitchen to make sure he could see the whole place with a single sweep of his eyes. He also had to divide his attention between cleaning tables, taking orders from newcomers, and actually cooking their food.

    It was hard work. A little bit stressful, if he was going to be completely honest. But at least, it was work he could actually do without anyone having to worry about him.

    After all, cooking was practically almost the same as potion making, and Ieyasu had been specializing on mixing and concocting potions ever since he had displayed his first capacities for magic. That, and wards. Both were his areas of expertise, and were the main reason he was so good and particularly compatible at helping Masamune in the kitchen. Their areas of power overlapped. Blessings. Warding. Shields and immunity and nourishment. Ieyasu and Masamune were experts on where to draw the line, or erase it altogether.

    But nothing that Ieyasu had ever experienced as a potion maker had prepared him with the sheer amount of work that comes with running a restaurant. Nothing about it had been as easy as he had originally thought.

He may be only a second pair of helping hands to Masamune Date, but it did not mean he was doing less work. For all his carefree and reckless attitude, Masamune ran a kitchen like it was a battlefield. Except, warmer. And more peaceful.

    Tonight was again a testament to that, and then some. Masamune had left a long list of things to do while he was away on patrol duty, which was on top of the fact that the restaurant was open for business. Ieyasu had more work than usual whenever Masamune was away.

    No, wait. Ieyasu frowned at the thought. That didn’t do it justice.

All the work was practically already on his shoulders. Add to the consideration a certain set of circumstances which dictated upon Masamune some physically inescapable constraints, Ieyasu technically was the lone chef. And noodle maker. And waiter. And cleaner. And busybody.

    Hell, if it was not for the fact that Hideyoshi brought them groceries and did part-time with them, or that Mitsunari sometimes came over to (only and strictly) look at their books, Ieyasu was going to be the sole saving grace that allowed the restaurant to continue to run for the next thirty or so years. And Ieyasu found no comfort in that.

    Before he could even shrug away the irritation that had crept up along with his thoughts, Ieyasu was done with the first batch of carrots, worked on the second, and then turned his attention to the spring onions and mushrooms. Ieyasu switched knives, choosing a slightly longer parring knife this time, and he could almost hear Masamune telling him to chop them up finely now, no that’s too thick.

    He did quick work of the vegetables for tomorrow’s menu, setting them into their respective containers for later use, and then strategically placing them into the refrigerators. Then, he grabbed a pair of clean towels and began to wipe down the tables, spraying them with a mixture of water and vinegar when there were difficult spots. He refilled condiments. Made sure the napkin holders for each table were bursting and then finally, mopped the floor. Twice. Just to be sure.

    He turned his attention to the dishes he had soaked next, and for the umpteenth time, Ieyasu thanked his luck that Masamune had been easily persuaded to set up shop a few more blocks away from the business district. Any closer and they would be busier than they already were, and Ieyasu would not have been able to keep up.

    He had only just begun to debate whether he should start making more noodles for tomorrow’s early morning batch, when suddenly he heard the front bell tinkling again.

    Ieyasu quickly dried his hands and had half an excuse already at the ready for the new customers: that it was cleaning time and no the place is simply too large for a single person to clean and things will definitely take too long and they should visit tomorrow instead. He was ready to recite it all rapidly when he recognized the man who stood by the door.

    “Mitsuhide?” Ieyasu said, surprised. All pretense of his worker’s personality was instantly discarded at the sight of his friend. “This is rare.”

    “Hello, Ieyasu.” Mitsuhide Akechi was all smiles. He removed his Gable rain hat, revealing slicked back white hair that Ieyasu might have mistaken as a halo if he did not know any better. Mitsuhide widened his smile and there was a mischievous light in his eyes that made Ieyasu second-guess if this was an ordinary visit.

    “I hope you aren’t yet closed for the night.” Mitsuhide said.

    Ieyasu sighed, crossing his arms and mentally setting up protective walls in place. “Don’t start.”

    At that, Mitsuhide chuckled again, slightly opening his palms in defense. “I’m sorry. And just to be perfectly clear, I didn’t read your mind.”

    “Right.” Ieyasu pretended to roll his eyes.

    “You know I wouldn’t. And I know you enough to know that you wanted to use that excuse. Again.”

     “It works on everyone that isn’t you.”

    “Thank the gods for that. Though I must confess it is hard being the only sensible person in the room, with a perfect sense of smell.” He took a whiff. “Bleach. Lysol. Vinegar and water, which has always been your favorite go-to cleanser – ”

    “Because it works.” Ieyasu said, defensive.

    “ – and just the barest hints of spring onions.” Mitsuhide nodded. “You’ve been busy.”

    “This place doesn’t run itself you know, despite the gossip. And I wanted the tiles spotless.”

     Mitsuhide scanned the dining area. “They are. And I promise they’ll remain that way. My guests are sober.”

    Ieyasu almost laughed. “For once.”

    Mitsuhide’s grin widened and Ieyasu saw a flash of amusement again, flecks of gold glinting in Mitsuhide’s eyes.

Ieyasu shook his head. Best to leave Mitsuhide to his own methods. “New recruits, then?”

    “Freshest new faces for the Academy.”

    “What do they need?”

“The usual concoctions against most urban spirits. Except for the underground train.”

Ieyasu hummed in thought, checking his mental list of common ingredients. “We don’t have much broth left. You’ll have to make do with plain soba.”

“It’s more than enough. This isn’t a fieldtrip.” Mitsuhide paused for a heartbeat. “At least. Not yet.”

    “I shudder at the thought.”

    “Ahh. You’re the only one who hasn’t helped me conduct one. A shame, really. Field trips are always fun.”

    “No, not really.” Ieyasu said, a vague memory of Masamune complaining about them for three days straight crept into his mind. “How many, then?”

    “Six people. I won’t be eating much.”

    Ieyasu decided recoiling at the number would only delight Mitsuhide so instead he pointed towards the right corner, as far from the open kitchen as the space would allow. “No spills. Anyone who does licks it off the floor.”

    “Duly noted.”

    “And they have to wait.” Ieyasu added, tightening his blue apron. “I have to make the noodles first.”

    “They will.” Mitsuhide nodded.

    “Help yourself with the appetizers. You know where to find them.” Ieyasu turned away and saw six bodies shuffle into the restaurant from the corner of his eye, each one grimacing as they sensed the magical barriers scanning them for any immediate threats. Their tense posture only became stiffer, as they were reminded that this was no an ordinary restaurant, and Mitsuhide no ordinary teacher.

    Ieyasu went into the walk-in pantry then shuffled back into the kitchen with an armful of ingredients for the soba. Mitsuhide’s group was duly seated at the far end,occupying four sofas and behaving as he had promised. Most of them were nibbling on what looked like nuts and some deep fried anchovies. Satisfied they would continue to sit quietly, Ieyasu set down the ingredients, mentally calculated how much he would need for six (and a half) servings and set to work.

    Making soba noodles was easy enough. Making soba noodles to ward against common city specters was not even a fraction more difficult. Flour. Water. Room temperature set at just the right degree for the early summer night. A gigantic dry board. A large bowl. An equally large soba knife. The stillness of the air around him. A single happy thought. And the space to perform.

    Well, not for a fancy performance really, but when he was making this particular soba, it needed to be quick. No distractions. The main ingredient was after all abstract so he had to hold on to that happy thought for as long as he could. Unlike Masamune and Hideyoshi, who cooked with their mouths running ahead of them without batting an eye, Ieyasu needed to concentrate.

    The first time he had tried to make soba – and just ordinary, non-magical soba at that – it had taken him five minutes too long, what with Masamune breathing down his neck and him in turn trying his best to make sure Mitsunari was not spilling anything at the customers. As a result, the noodles had broken in his hands like dust.

    So maybe not exactly like dust. But he had been truly horrified at how easily the dough tore in his hands. How none of the noodles wanted to stay in place. It was a disaster. And it took him two hundred bowls before he got it right.

    Now, after all these years working on improving his technique, making soba was as natural as breathing. He was far from becoming a master, too many variants and too little time to practice them all, but he could make a batch for twelve under ten minutes.

    Ieyasu held on to that sense of accomplishment, stretched it in his mind, molded it into something tangible and real. He added in a punch of pride in being able to do it all with his eyes closed, with just his instincts guiding him through the process.

    It’s been said that it was better to make soba that way, without eyes and simply relying on your arms, hands, and each ten fingers. Until Ieyasu needed to make sure he was shaping the dough into a sensible square. That one he needed to see with all his available senses.

    Ieyasu opened his eyes to do just that and was shocked to find Mitsuhide’s group had gathered in front of him, eyes wide and half-mesmerized. Ieyasu fought the urge to balk under their stare and instead glared at Mitsuhide who had remained seated in his spot at the far corner.

    “I didn’t know I was part of the curriculum tonight.” Ieyasu bristled, taking the soba knife andvmaking pointed chopping noises. He should not let Mitsuhide notice that the students frazzled him. “You said they only wanted to eat.”

    “They do.” Mitsuhide answered.

    “We do.” The tallest female replied almost simultaneously. Ieyasu glared at her from behind the glass and she flinched. “We also begged Sensei Mitsuhide to let us see you work.”

    “Is that right.” Ieyasu’s tone dripped with irritation and sarcasm. He did not believe her and he returned to glaring at Mitsuhide.

    “It’s true.” Another piped. And as if emboldened, the group murmured various loud assents. Yes, they all wanted to go to Sensei Mitsuhide’s friends’ restaurant and yes they did hear about their group in the Academy and they just had to see it for their own eyes.

    Three of them got ahead of themselves to comment that they have never in their entire lived lives saw someone like Ieyasu cook and was it not fascinating the way he mixed the flour with water and how –

    Ieyasu did not want to hear the rest of that sentence and made the last cut on the dough with an exaggerated thwack. The noodles looked oddly misshapen. Ieyasu decided Mitsuhide can have those.

     None of the students however seemed to have gotten the point that came with the sound of a large sharp knife being smacked against a hardboard and continued chatting amongst themselves now, their earlier discreetness all but forgotten, their voices seemingly reaching higher pitches by the second.

    Ieyasu turned his back to them and began the mechanical act of boiling the noodles, then dumping them into cold water. He should have known better that Mitsuhide’s tell was always the gold in his eyes, he should have known better that his students would somehow take after him. Even if they were fresh recruits.

    By the time he turned around again to begin plating, all six students had seated themselves at the bar, eager to eat.

    He did not like the attention. He also did not like how all of them stared at him as if he had somehow done magic while he was cooking. That was Masamune’s domain. Not his. There was no magic when he cooked.

    Only memory. Only reflex honed by years and years of experience. It was mostly science and measurements and knowing which ingredients went with what to achieve an end. There was nothing magical about that.

    Ieyasu was about to shoo them back into their respective seats when a hand shot up, surprising him and forcing him to take half a step back. Mitsuhide snickered in his corner. Ieyasu gritted his teeth.

    “What?” He spat, but even his coldest tone could do little to dissuade their eagerness to learn.

    “Do you cook with magic?”

    Ieyasu scoffed,feigned insult as he pushed the plates towards them. No one seemed to dare eat without him answering their question first and he urged them with a wave of their hands.

    Six mouths quickly went to work, gobbling up the food. Mitsuhide made an elaborate show of nibbling his noodles and made no effort to explain in Ieyasu’s place.

    Ieyasu clicked his tongue, wondered for a brief moment how much they knew and what he did not have to say. “Of course not. If your Sensei hadn’t already told you, my area of expertise are potions and wards.”

    Another hand. And Ieyasu closed his eyes to calm himself down. Another girl, this time with brighter, sharper eyes.

    “This is not a class and I am not your teacher.” Ieyasu said. “Yours the last question I’m entertaining tonight.”

    Disappointed groans answered him. Ieyasu ignored the guilty squeeze in his gut.

    The girl hesitated but eventually pushed through. “How do you do it then?”

    Ieyasu gave her a pointed look. Maybe his expectations of Mitsuhide’s students was a bit too much. They had obviously not learned subtlety. Yet.  “It’s a very important trade secret.”

    Six bodies inched closer to hear. None stopping to pause in eating.

“The fascinating and equally tedious but exacting art of boiling your ingredients with potions and letting them simmer for forty minutes.”

A collective gasp. More fascinated than put-off by sarcasm, and seven pairs of eyes went to look at Mitsuhide, whose eyes were fully glittering golden now.

At least one of them was enjoying this.

    “What did you tell them?” Ieyasu asked.

    “That they’d be seeing an old Sensei at work.”

    Ieyasu felt his brows meet in the middle now. He was about to point out in all seriousness that the Sensei they should really make their way out to see was Masamune when he was cooking. Masamune could only be sautéing vegetables and it would look as if he weaved fireworks.

    But before Ieyasu could, all of a sudden, the kitchen too bright for Ieyasu’s eyes, the air too hot for his lungs to take.

    He felt his knees buckle.

    “Ieyasu….?”

And then the world turned black.

It felt like fighting through the ocean current.

Ieyasu’s arms and legs were heavy with effort as he pushed through the darkness, as if the black around him had weight and was coiling and recoiling and pushing him back.

“Do you understand, Ieyasu?”

    And Ieyasu felt himself pulled from the darkness and suddenly, he was standing across Nobunaga from their tiny bonfire. “Whatever you do, do not look back.”

    Ieyasu shook his head then focused again on Nobunaga, who shimmered and seemed to fade in and out of his vision. Nobunaga was staring at something behind him, his eXpression clouded over like he was trying hard not to show that he was frightened or cowered by whatever it was that was standing behind Ieyasu and whispering in his ears and he needed to move, he needed to protect himself, he needed –

    Ieyasu wrapped his arms around himself, bracing himself against the crashing waves inside his chest. He opened his mouth, wanted to vomit but nothing could come out.

    Nobunaga did not react. Or maybe he did but Ieyasu found it hard to hold on to Nobunaga’s image; frozen one moment, flickering the next, like the static of a light bulb.

    Ieyasu ground his teeth. “I’m tired. I’m so tired.”

    “I know.” Nobunaga replied but his voice was a hundred miles away.

    “I’m sorry,Nobunaga. I wish I was stronger. I wish I was better.”

    The darkness was already at the corners of Ieyasu’s vision and whichever way Ieyasu turned his head, something was skittering just out of sight and he could not help but feel the years of fighting, of running, of trying their best to finish what they started.

    “Until we find her again, this will be way things are.” Nobunaga was suddenly in front of him. He was suddenly very real and very there, solid and imposing and powerful and poised with knife to Ieyasu’s hest.

    Ieyasu wanted to run, wanted to get away, but somehow Nobunaga had grabbed his arm and wasn’t letting go –

    No. Ieyasu was the one not letting the knife go.

     “Start over. Live again. Find us. Remember.”  Nobunaga leaned forward, the knife pressed to his skin and it felt like a dozen hot iron rods. “You have to remember, Ieyasu! That’s the only way we can find out!”

»Description: just scene writing and reader-fic practice i suppose--"you" are taken to what is implicitly Black Swan by Lucien/Ares and "you" don't seem like you're going to be allowed to leave anytime soon. It doesn't go anywhere--originally it was supposed to go very differently and take place further in the future in the same setting but somehow i wound up writing this instead lol. . . . Not shippy or romantic in any nature.  Maybe if I have more ideas for whatever this story verse is.

You were just an ordinary human.

You knew what an "Evolver" supposedly was. You'd watched Miracle Finder--just about everybody had seen at least one episode, and the recent episodes had been a hit. Perhaps you didn't believe in what they spoke of or showed on the series, but you'd seen or heard enough about it to know what they talked about.

Most disregarded it as the usual magic mumbo jumbo, nonsense, falsified, or things that could be explained some other way. Whether or not you were one of them was apparently not important.

Perhaps you'd been among those who admired some of the producer's recent guests on both Miracle Finder and other series she made. Four in particular stood out to every viewer, be it for their attractiveness or social standing or how close they always seemed to be to the producer whenever they were on screen together.

Perhaps one of them was the one before you.

But it was a little too dark for you to truly confirm that suspicion.

And with his back to you, his hand holding your wrist, pulling you along through halls that looked nothing like they belonged to the TV Tower you'd been pulled into, you only had the brief memory of his face, now somewhat blurry since having had come inside.

Professor Lucien was the name he gave before cameras and to his students.

"Ares" was the name the shadowy figures about you whispered, nerves and respect and fear in their voices, radiating off of them in the halls and making the already oppressive darkness that much unnaturally heavier. Weighted down by nerves and terror and. . .

Was there pity in there as well?

Perhaps you struggled. Perhaps you demanded to be released. If you did, his leading would pause, the air would seem stiffer with the tension of the people who mist have been in the surrounding dark.

"Stop it." He'd demand of you, somehow harsh and unfeeling all the same. "If you don't cooperate, I can make you cooperate. But I'd rather not waste my time--so shut up and behave yourself."

Nothing like the fawned over Professor that you knew of, nothing like the friendly and airy voice that lectured on neuroscience and psychology, in the dark you could even believe this was a different man.

In the light you couldn't be so wishful.

Should you not believe him, not agree to be led, express disbelief in his ability to keep you obedient, he looked over his shoulder at you, eyes dark, empty, icy, then past you.

"Come." He ordered, though not to you, and hesitantly one of those shadows around you stepped forward. And it seemed like the darkness collectively sucked in a breath.

"Ares, Sir." The nervous shadow barely had time to bow in its respects before 'Ares' reached out to it. Okay. Continuing to add here. I didn’t really get anywhere until I found these images depicting patterns for both the Roman style and Spanish style biretta:

Now, because these are based off a four sided pattern, the bottom of each hat is to measure 1/4 of what the circumference of your head is. This is important math/geometry and despite my love for both of these fields, I have not ever really been able to make this work precisely for my head so make sure that you’re fitting the hat to your head at every step of the way! This may be due to my form going back and forth between the corporeal and the non corporeal. Unsure.

The main place I assembled the videos is on my TikTok and I think many of those have captions as well. Here is assembling the supplies.

One of my favorite artistic materials to work with is the thin cardboard that drinks come in. Specifically sparkling water as this is my main vice. It’s thin, flexible, and if you have purchased drinks or any other materials that came in it, it’s free. It’s versatile and you can work with it without being too afraid to mess it up. I always save these boxes for work like this.

I use duct tape, a hot glue gun, scissors, and a measuring tape, along with felt or the material of choice. That’s all you need in order to make one of these. Rhinestones optional.

After much trial and error, I believe that a five sided or six sided shape is the best way to get the shape looking good. So this tutorial is for a hexagonal shape — and you can get a similar result with a pentagon shape, but you’ll just need to adjust the math on the bottom sides. and again, if you use duct tape and sort of tack everything together and fit it to your head as you go along, you will avoid suffering haha.

In the second video is where I do the math: the way to get the top number right is to go upwards from the midpoint of the bottom as indicated in the pattern. Are we having fun with math yet? Geometry is a great skill for a costumer but unfortunately I’ve always been more into statistics.

Now this is where I start to fit the pieces of the hat together. Now is the time to make adjustments if you need to. And when you make the patterns, the good thing about making a five or six sided hat is that once you find a pattern that works for you, you can make an extra template and have it laying around if you want to make more. I think so far I’ve made about 25 of these in different styles.

Despite trying to follow a pattern each time, the hats always turn out differently, so sometimes they need more internal supports and sometimes they don’t. Internal support is for the structure of the hat, so you can do it any way you’d like - i sometimes use chopsticks or straws as part of the internal bracing if the hat needs it.

As discussed in one of these videos, if you use this type of cardboard that has stuff printed on the outside, I recommend using the printed side as the inside, because some fabrics will not be opaque enough to cover up that if it’s facing outwards.

As far as fabric, you can use anything you would like. The original hat is velvet, I made almost all of these hats with felt because a) it’s cheap b) it‘s easily available and c) it’s nice and thick so it often will cover up the cardboard with one layer. I use two types of felt in my work right now: the thicker, more flexible kind that often comes in 9x12 or 12x18 sheets (I get mine at Michael’s) and then a thinner stiffer type that comes in more colors. The thinner stiffer type I’ve found on amazon often marketed as felt squares. Both are good, I like having the maximum amount of colors available to me at all times.

Felt also works decently with hot glue and you can sew or stitch on it if you want. If you think you want to do stitching, I recommend the thicker more flexible felt instead of the thinner, stiffer felt. And when I’m saying “felt,” this is acrylic and not actual wool. Perhaps someday I’ll have the budget to make myself a good fancy wool one.

I have used a lot of hot fix rhinestones for this project - there are many many types of rhinestones and I could go on about them for hours - but hotfix rhinestones are smaller and are coated with glue on the back. When you heat them up, the glue melts and it attaches to the back. This means that you can set more than one at a time using an iron, or do it one by one with a hotfix gun. Either way is fine, but if you’re planning on doing a lot of accents like I did, I recommend cutting out the shapes of the felt beforehand, and doing all the rhinestones while it’s still on a flat surface. Most irons have holes and therefore aren’t perfect for hotfix work, but it’s still faster and easier than doing one at a time with the gun (again, trial and error). Expensive hotfix are made from crystal, cheaper ones are made from glass, some of them do contain some lead, so be sure to check information on labels and wash your hands when working with them.

Acrylic rhinestones are typically larger (sometimes called acrylic gems) and cheaper. I recommend using something like Gem-Tac on these. DO NOT use E6000 on acrylic gemstones - it will eat the backs off the rhinestones and you will probably poison yourself in the process. The fumes are horrible. And you can use hot glue on acrylic stones, but it will also eat the backs off over time. Best bet for gluing them on is something like Gem-Tac or another nontoxic traditional glue that will not eat the backs off. These glues dry in 20 minutes or so and are fully set in about 24 hours.

I used hot glue on some of the “sew on” rhinestones because I was feeling lazy and because the backs of sew on rhinestones are made of metal and not the plastic. Ymmv.

Here is the almost finished hat. I did still have to put a cover on the hat and close it up, as well as fix a little bit of the fitting issues. I think the fit issues with this one were caused by the pitching angle on the sides being a bit too steep. If I were going to fix that, I should have fixed it in the stage where I was fitting the pieces together. Whoooo.

And for the top, I discovered today that the Canterbury cap has a design on the top that seems a bit Q to me:

The bracing on the top and back seems cool and is another neat option!

Ooooookay well. Here is the post for how I made the hats, and I’ll be posting some of my favorite variations on the theme as we go along here. Q hat tutorial/pattern master post (1/?)

Alllllll right so I figured out some options for making one of the more recognizable Continuum symbols (THE HAT) and because it took me months of trial and error I wanted to make sure I documented my process and shared it with everyone in the Star Trek community so that you do not have to suffer like I did. HA!

When I was in college my main job was working in the costume shop for all the shows we put on, dressing all the opera singers and actors. One of my lifelong besties is a pro costumer, and between that, performing my entire life, and just loving clothing and fashion, this is one of my obsessions. Imagine my surprise in my late 30s to discover that there is this entire community of people all around the world who love all this stuff too AND dress up and go places in it. Wow! Incredible. If I can ever make it to a con, it’s over for everybody, including me.

So let me start with my analysis of the original hat.

All right. So from what I can tell in all photos and on screen, this is made of some sort of ‘velvet’. Don’t fret. it’s definitely not expensive. Black felt will do the same job.

It is also fully closed at the top, so you cannot see through, and there is maybe some sort of tassel thingy on the top.

In some photos of Q, I have seen the fabric that goes from the hat to his chin draped OVER the hat, instead of underneath it - I think this is a personal choice and I enjoy it either way - because I haven’t been able to find a fabric that’s worked for that, maybe because of my face & neck shape. I don’t know.

Now, in this costume advertisement, you can see a very big difference, in my opinion the most important difference: the shape of the hat:

This hat is close, but it’s not exact. And we’re not going to talk about the exposed feet here or the sad polyester.

This hat has four sides - I believe the original hat is best designed with five or six sides - and this hat also does not have the pitched shape that is generated when the top of the hat is wider than the bottom of the hat. It also doesn’t have that little curve or wiggle at he top to give it sort of a } shape. All very small details that can be easily addressed.

I made a four sided Continuum style hat that has the pitched angles and I really, really enjoy the way it looks, but I need to make a better pattern for it. Here’s the four sided one - it was the first one I made

So you can see in this hat how just making the top a bit wider than the bottom already gives it a bit more of that recognizable shape.

Now, how did I find this out? I kept googling and googling and couldn’t find any tutorials about this. I have always thought the original Q hat looked religious, but it’s not quite a Pope hat and it’s not anything I’d ever seen before. It wasn’t until I found the biretta that I started getting anywhere.

Traditionally the three peaked beretta is worn by Catholic clergy and some Anglican and Lutheran clergy. a four peaked biretta is worn as academic dress (but not liturgically) by those holding a doctoral degree from a pontifical faculty or university. So like — we’re getting a little warmer, right? This looks a *little* more like the one we see, but it’s not quite there.

And then there’s this one which, the enormous Pom-Pom is so amazing.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE, out of control design. Who thought of this? Whoever did this in the Middle Ages, you went off. Good job.

You can see in the last photo that pitched angle we see in the original Q hat. Again, caused by the top measurements being wider than the bottom measurements.

It was at this point in my search for something resembling this hat that eBay assumed I was a priest and started sending me targeted ads for Catholic liturgical clothing. Hilarious. I love confusing the algorithm.

THEN I came across the Spanish biretta! There are differences between the Roman biretta (takeout container type) and the Spanish biretta.

Now we’re getting somewhere.

I don’t know the context of the Louis Vuitton Spanish biretta and I hope I never find out. These curved points are really architectural and gorgeous, but still not quite the look. Although this one is pretty incredible and VERY Continuum:
