Heesu in Class 2: Maybe It’s Time to Stop Calling Myself a BL Viewer

After finishing Heesu in Class 2, it’s been surprising to feel like I’m in the minority for enjoying it. We’ve seen a great deal of concerted posting from fans of the webtoon about how this show betrayed its source material with its adaptation changes. Over the last few weeks, I’ve read the original webtoon to gather my own thoughts. After reading through @my-rose-tinted-glasses post on why this project didn’t work for her, I decided to sit with it for a while. I then came across this tweet from Dr. Thomas Baudinette:

I respect Dr. Baudinette’s academic interest in the genre and the useful insider insight he brings to the table. However, I will say plainly that I think this is a grossly disingenuous take, grounded in the idea that stories about queer romance take precedence over other queer stories. Additionally, it deeply misreads the adaptation choices and insinuates that a queer show that includes heterosexuality in it is somehow betraying the BL audience. There’s a lot to unpack here, but I will say plainly that I will go back to just being a queer cinephile who dabbles in BL instead of advocating for BL if this is who we are.

I am a queer person here for stories about queer truth. BL is a romance genre. While I respect BL viewers who are here to get their feelings from swoony moments, I cannot abide the presumption that a story that is inherently about the coming out experience somehow let its source material down for maintaining that connection. Every year we get into a big fight about what is or isn’t BL (see: 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us, Love in the Big City, What Did You Eat Yesterday?, etc.), often arguing that BL is a branding term used to get romance viewers to show up and support queer works. I think it’s fine enough to argue that Heesu in Class 2 isn’t a BL because it uses Korean drama frameworks (@lurkingshan) for its story instead of sandblasting you in the face with pop music as two boys stare at each other, but I think there’s real value in what the show is doing for mainstream viewers.

I’ve avoided discussing the webtoon too much in my commentary, but now that I have read it I will say firmly that this would have sucked as a TV show. We know that about 40-50% of the shows we get each year are based on their source material. The webtoon is adorable and well-intentioned. It’s also a very simple narrative in which we are primarily in Heesu’s point of view, and any time we leave his point of view it’s to see only what other people are thinking about him. In my opinion, simpler narratives like the Heesu webtoon work best as films and not as dramas. 

We recently went through this with Living With Him, in which a really short manga got stretched to eight episodes and had to add contrivances to the middle to pad out the time that eventually hurt the core narrative. Thai BL is rife with secondary, tertiary, and quaternary couples to pad out time to meet the long run time demands of the airing schedule. When you’re adapting a fairly simple story, you either have to add depth or bloat. Oftentimes we get both. In the case of Heesu, it’s clear that they were only adapting the first season of the webtoon, and so they added depth.

The constant refrain from detractors of this webtoon is that it deprioritized the queer characters and their narrative in favor of straight narratives. I wholeheartedly disagree. Every single straight story in this show (and the gay ones) are meant to add context to the queer struggles Hee Su and Seung Won face, from Ji Yu and Chan Young to all three of his sisters.

Ji Yu’s music arc hearkens to the queer fear of being public with yourself and facing judgment and scrutiny. Chan Young’s tennis arc features real parental abandonment consequences that many a queer person fears. Hee Sin exemplifies how easy it is to fall for people and also deal with the constant rejection of most people not being into you (because they’re straight). Hee Jae exemplifies how toxic a relationship with your best friend can be when the romantic feelings aren’t fully reciprocal. Hee Yeong shows us what it means to be brave and face your friend after you’ve let them down romantically. Ho Sik highlights how easy it is for straight people to express and pursue their romances, and then be public with them. None of these plots exist in a vacuum; they’re meant to add context to the tension between Hee Su and Seung Won.

On the queer front, the show expanded on the initial lesbian advice plotline as a way for Hee Su to open the discussion about queerness with his siblings. The look shared between the sisters, their careful responses, and the way they treat him in the final episode after Hee Su comes out to Hee Sin shows that they talked to each other. Hee Sin clearly pulled on her prior knowledge when she insisted to Hee Su that she still loves him. Hee Jae, the grumpiest sister, was especially direct about praising Hee Su when he offered to help them take Hee Yeong to the airport. Hee Yeong told him plainly that he must remember that she is always on his side and will support him. Seung Won’s mom acknowledged that her own coming out affected him, and let him decide how open to be about his family.

The coming out sequence with Hee Sin was so powerful. He made it clear that this isn’t a gay-for-you situation. He said plainly that his crushes are on guys, and will probably always be on guys. Hee Sin’s response took me back to this incredible scene from The Fosters, in which Lena’s dad apologizes to her for saying “I still love you.” He rejects it as something horrible, in which you confirm to your kid that you could possibly stop loving them. He says he wishes he had instead said, “Thank you for telling me something so important about yourself, and I can’t wait to meet the person you want to share your life with.” 

I’m also annoyed about the insistence that the straights were given priority in this narrative in which everyone gets about the same level of on-screen intimacy. This is a show that managed to avoid getting an R rating, which means that it’ll be accessible to a much wider range of viewers without needing additional parental controls. The straights getting time means that when the gays throw the ease at which they pursued romance back in their faces, it’s actually grounded in events that transpired in the narrative. I will also say that I did NOT like the way Jiyu and Chanyoung meddled with Heesu in the webtoon, and thought conspiring with Seung Won was not kind to Heesu. I like that the drama instead uses their stories to support the queer themes as Ji Yu directly supports Seung Won.

I’d also like to say that all the Chan Young commentary troubles me. Hee Su has been in love with this boy for ten years. I actually think the show needs to spend time fleshing him out into a real person for the audience to understand why Hee Su likes him so much. He’s charming and friendly. He’s kind and thoughtful. He wants to help the people he cares about. He also trusts Hee Su implicitly. 

I do not blame him for being overwhelmed and surprised when Hee Su suddenly confessed to him, and I think there is real value in him botching that moment. So many viewers who might not have spent a lot of time thinking about how they would handle queer people coming out to them will benefit from seeing Chan Young flub that moment. What’s more important is that he did eventually talk to Hee Su and begin to repair the break in their friendship. It isn’t about being right every single time; it’s about always doing the work required to make things right. 

Finally, I really loved that Hee Su got to be mad at Seung Won for confusing him all this time. It was fun to see Hee Su, who I think was way out of line for always interfering in Chan Young’s life, face the reality that he had also been subject to that kind of behavior. This worked so well for me because we understood that what Seung Won liked so much about Hee Su was how warm and open he was. I will have more to say in the future about how many shows we’ve already had this year reject one-sided pining as inherently pure.

In the end, it’s just a really dissonant experience for me to see such a kind show getting such an energetic negative response. Like anyone else who’s watched over 300 BLs since 2016, I like seeing cute boys kiss each other and make face as much as anyone else. However, if we’re unable to appreciate using a webtoon with clear ideas about the difficulty of coming out when you’re in love with a friend in a format that far more viewers are used to, I don’t think I can rock with this anymore. I can’t even find myself associated with the kinds of people who would have called Degrassi homophobic because it wasn’t exclusively gay.

Facts:

JV is a very recent convert to (allegedly, see next) Roman Catholicism.

In January, newly minted Veep JV criticized his church’s role in immigration advocacy very brazenly on CBS’ Face the Nation. JV suggested the Catholic Church was in it for the money: “Are they worried about humanitarian concerns or are they actually worried about their bottom line?” (This begins his public hat red of the Pope.)

In this past February of the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis publicly and rightfully criticized the Trump administration's increasingly worsening immigration policies: particularly the inhumane mass deportation plan, calling it a "major crisis". For the first time, the Pope appeared to specifically address Vice President JD Vance.

JV publicly clapped back and claimed the evil deportation policies were actually endorsed by Roman Catholic doctrine, specifically Ordo Amoris doctrine the concept of "rightly-ordered love" or "true charity"—a theological doctrine which is based in Jesus's parable of The Good Samaritan about helping others.

The Pope, who is the Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and who can indeed pontificate on the moral teachings with divine authority, then gave public homily and statements (without mentioning JV specifically) TL;DR—it is heretical and schismatic to claim it is Ordo Amoris when the mass deportation and Trumpism's policies and actions are in fact obviously evil and the exact opposite of the doctrine about charity, compassion, hope and love for all.

Every other theologian on the planet calls JV a retarded twat. They all side with the Pope on Twitterx.com and...

JV refers to himself as a "baby Catholic" and tweeted that there are "things about the faith that I don't know" but he publicly and obstinately asserts that he's right and the Pope is wrong. This is the definition of heresy, believe it or not.

Vance acknowledged that the Pope was critical of him, but stated he would "continue to defend his views"—whatever that means...

The Freudian slip: “That is how I will always remember the Holy Father, as a great pastor, as a man who can speak truth to faith in a very profound way at a moment of great crisis,” JV appeared to prematurely eulogize the still very much alive Pope, with wording that would mirror the actual eulogical tweet less than 12 hours after the April Easter meeting.

Still February 28, JV seemed surprised to learn from the Bishops thar Pope Francis might actually pull through, and awkwardly attempted to take intercessory credit: “Every day since I heard of Pope Francis’s illness I say a prayer for the Holy Father because while yes, I was certainly surprised when he criticized our immigration policy in the way that he has, I also know that the pope, I believe that the pope, is fundamentally a person who cares about the flock of Christians under his leadership, and he’s a man who cares about the spiritual direction of the faith...” as long as that direction is Trumpism, and the Pope doesn't get in the way, and God protects him from assassination attempts...

April; Easter Sunday; The Vatican: JV forces a meeting with Pope Francis seemingly for the sole purpose of shaking his hand.

You recently found a few roaches in your home which was only the start. Mice and other bugs started popping up so you searched for a cheap embittered effective exterminator online. You landed on bomb-exterminations. I used to defend army’s relationship with BTS a lot back when I was still an army. Especially from kpop stans who said we were a cult. Even did so earlier into my days after becoming a solo, but through everything that has happened, especially recently. I’ve really come to realize just how toxic it is.

I saw a these three posts earlier yesterday. (Top one from another pjm bottom ones are mine) the top one might be a solo, but solo or not though, I still know that that all 3 are common sentiments for a lot of actual armys anyway: their fear of becoming obsolete in their need of wanting to be the only people Jimin relies on, basically wanting to own him and loosing BTS as they know them.

The top one literally reads exactly like how music execs used to (still do in fact) view them in regards to BTS. The music industry’s fear of armys encroaching on the decades long ecosystem of keeping artists indebted to their labels in the pursuit of chart success and fame. How they hated how armys beat the system and started a grassroots movement that allowed BTS to get to where they are now.

It was never about really wanting anything for Joon. Armys just feel like they’re loosing control, influence and are trying to reassert it just like Billboard did. Intentionally using underhanded tactics to ostracize us and Jimin. Delegitimization of our efforts and dactively trying to break our morale. There’s a reason they care about quelling us more than the other groups of solos who are just as large in numbers despite them presenting actual harm to Jimin’s person and character. They care more about keeping their norm and BTS in tact for their own stanning needs over anything else. We’re a threat to that.

And even outside their hatred of solos, most importantly, BTS is an even bigger threat to that. The bottom two are proof of this. Staying in solo era longer than they're comfortable with. The hidden resentment that they hold towards those men for doing so. Because here you have a fandom with a superiority complex that's so egotistical, they believe that they could never be like other kpop fandoms who treat the group they stan like property and characters. When, in just this past week alone, we've had 3 instances with them proving that they're exactly like that. And I think the company is using and has been using that mentality of armys to their advantage. Them thinking that they're too "aware" to be manipulated as well as them believing that they always do what they feel is best for BTS.

It's symbiotic and parasitic in that way. Where the company is potentially weaponizing armys (unbeknownst to them) by carrying out their own agendas against through them at the cost of destroying the foundation of the fanbase. And where both armys and the company work in tandem to keep a member (Jimin) in line.

It is a little scary to me, because as we've seen last year, Bang has very underhanded ways of ruining people who he views as a threat or don't fit within his vision. Armys are so unperceptive and it has very little with them being naive. They just don't feel the need to question anything as long as they're also content with things falling in line with their version of normal. They always need visible and verbal proof that something is wrong before they move to act. So to be willing to ignore all that, some of the members being burnt out, Bang's obvious campaign against Jimin (and potentially Joon) just to get back the BTS they're used to just shows how selfish most of them are.

The Pope is dead. (Yeah the Vatican probably isn't faking it? This is the weakest "Fact")

The Timeline:

1. In January, newly minted Veep JV criticized his church's role in immigration advocacy very brazenly on CBS' Face the Nation. JV suggested the Catholic Church was in it for the money: "Are they worried about humanitarian concerns or are they actually worried about their bottom line?" (This begins his public hat red of the Pope.)

2. In this past February of the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis publicly and rightfully criticized the Trump administration's increasingly worsening immigration policies: particularly the inhumane mass deportation plan, calling it a "major crisis". For the first time, the Pope appeared to specifically address the alleged Catholic, JV.

3. JV publicly clapped back and claimed the evil deportation policies were actually endorsed by Roman Catholic doctrine, specifically Ordo Amoris doctrine the concept of "rightly-ordered love" or "true charity"-a theological doctrine which is based in Jesus's parable of The Good Samaritan about helping everyone.

4. The Pope, who is the Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and who can indeed pontificate on the moral teachings with divine authority, then gave public homily and statements (without mentioning JV specifically) TL;DR-it is heretical and schismatic to claim it is Ordo Amoris when the mass deportation and Trumpism's policies and actions are in fact obviously evil and the exact opposite of the doctrine about charity, compassion, hope and love for all.

5. Every other theologian on the planet calls JV a retarded twat. They all side with the Pope on Twitterx.com and...

6. JV refers to himself as a "baby Catholic" and tweeted that there are "things about the faith that I don't know" but he publicly and obstinately asserts that he's right and the Pope is wrong. This is the definition of Heresy, believe it or not.

7. Vance acknowledged that the Pope was critical of him, but stated he would "continue to defend his views"-whatever that means...

8. Oh, look! The Pope's suddenly been taken ill!

9. Oh, look! In intensive care in the best hospital in Italy, Rome's Gemelli Hospital-sure this is just normal, common-or-garden-variety "pneumonia"

10. February 28, JV addresses a National gathering of Catholics, unrepentantly announcing firmly that he's not going to "litigate with [the Pope] or any other clergy member about who's right and who's wrong"-

11. JV: "I don't think it's good for us as Christians to constantly fight with one another over every single controversy in the church"

The Freudian slip: "That is how I will always remember the Holy Father, as a great pastor, as a man who can speak truth to faith in a very profound way at a moment of great crisis," JV appeared to prematurely eulogize the still very much alive Pope, with wording that would mirror the actual eulogical tweet less than 12 hours after the April Easter meeting.

13. Still February 28, JV seemed surprised to learn from the Bishops thar Pope Francis might actually pull through, and awkwardly attempted to take intercessory credit: "Every day since I heard of Pope Francis's illness I say a prayer for the Holy Father because while yes, I was certainly surprised when he criticized our immigration policy in the way that he has, I also know that the pope, I believe that the pope, is fundamentally a person who cares about the flock of Christians under his leadership, and he's a man who cares about the spiritual direction of the faith..." as long as that direction is Trumpism, and the Pope doesn't get in the way, and God protects him from assassination attempts...

14. April; Easter Sunday; 🇻🇦The Vatican: JV forces a meeting with Pope Francis seemingly for the sole purpose of shaking his hand.

15. The Pope has a sudden ischemic stroke, enters a coma and shortly dies.

16. This stroke could have been caused by any of the transdermal hemostatic chemical agents routinely used for such purposes, or something else, but the handshake points to Prince JV and his retenue.

Stranger Things, Peter Pan, Mothers, and Wendys

Some Peter Pan artifact, I'd guess a Disney movie tie-in book, hanging out in Holly's room

I recently watched The Lost Boys and read Peter Pan (really Peter and Wendy in The Annotated Peter Pan but what version of the story is "the original" is infamously convoluted). 

The Lost Boys was a viewing experience that made me feel like I understood the Duffers’ whole deal in a completely new way - like watching Election finally made me understand what Ryan Murphy has actually been trying to do all this time. I know we’re always like Spielberg, King, Carpenter, etc but how much of this movie is in ST’s DNA is pretty wild, there even is a “barricading the house against a supernatural threat with everyday items as makeshift weapons" montage with a synth score. Joel Schumacher we gotta start giving you your proper due in this conversation, we do simply owe gay ppl everything (also as with any worthwhile ST reference to pull at @/threemanoperation has already been on this beat)

Anyways, The Lost Boys is a spiritual Peter Pan adaptation and one big current that shows up from its source text is a real preoccupation with the mother.

These aren’t the only ST reference texts with a lot of mom stuff going on. We’re getting probably the icon of genre movie motherhood herself with Linda Hamilton joining the show in s5, and pregnancy body horror is like the entire thing in extremely obvious ST creature design touchpoint Alien.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Linda Hamilton seems to be playing a female counterpoint to Brenner/Papa, so all signs point to them intentionally invoking that reference at least.

Joyce is our purest Spielberg mom: the harried single parent, doing her best, a bit eccentric. She’s taken a backseat in recent seasons, but a new maybe-Mama taking on Papa's mantle as s5’s primary human antagonist points to Joyce taking more of a lead again. 

Joyce seeming to spend a substantial chunk of s5 separated from Hopper gives me hope, as does her seeming to be the most connected with Henry of our ST-adult-cast-as-teens in The First Shadow. We heard Victor’s story last season, so turning to Virginia’s role in the tragedy of Henry might be another narrative element that pulls Joyce out as a foil.

One of our other established moms, Karen, also looks to be getting an expanded role in s5. If Holly is indeed taken by the military, she should join Joyce to take on Linda Hamilton (are we ever going to learn her character name good lord). 

If Joyce and Karen are our Mrs. Darlings, then we have the Wendy-coded among us: "mothergate" creator El, and Alienesque body horror victim/slug incubator Will.

Like Wendy, El and Will both have their own personal playhouses even within the broader kid kingdoms of Neverland, Mike’s basement, and the woods.

And, of course, once Wendy leaves Neverland and grows up, she has a daughter named Jane who eventually journeys to Neverland with Peter herself.

Wendy’s primary “power” in Peter Pan is storytelling, which lives with mothers in the book/play in a very fairy tale logic sort of way. Peter is initially attracted to the Darlings’ nursery window by Mrs. Darling’s bedtime stories. And that's the reason he is convinced to bring Wendy to Neverland (she "tempts him" with stories).

This actually convinces Peter to bring Wendy to Neverland even if he isn't so hot on the idea of mothers himself. "The Boy Who Hated Mothers" was a working title for Peter Pan the play.

There is an interesting relationship between storytelling and time in Peter Pan that probably deserves more exploration, maybe a topic for a later post. The residents of Neverland exist out of time, which means they can’t conceptualize beginnings or endings - and that's why they can’t tell stories and Wendy's ability to do so has such allure.

I still haven’t totally made sense of what this implies for our Neverlandesque-frozen-in-time Upside Down and El and friends’ preoccupation with stories in s5. But it feels significant in the final act of our coming-of-age story, especially considering why the Upside Down is stuck on November 6, 1986 is allegedly a driving mystery of what's to come, according to the Duffers.

... Will you guys please let me talk about hgduo/gossipduo/mockingjays/ whatever they are called a little more pleaseeeeeeeeee, they make me unwell and I want to get my thoughts about them out of my head- or more specifically about them from Bad's point of view!

There's a familial air to it, but it's just not true to define it like that- and that doesn't make what they DO have any less powerful or significant- They have a unique bond and that continues to be true, even during painful times like this.

Cellbit WAS Bad's responsibility at one point, and that time came and went- he got him through the war and into adulthood ( aka 18 years old or close to it.) They meet again as old friends and generally respect each other as such... but even so Bad can't deny he still feels some duty to watch over the man once he starts crumbling- much like how Cellbit as well can't help but reach out to Bad during this time.

but there's limits.

like- Bad for years had and still wants to protect Cellbit, he's had an influence on him, he taught him how to survive, he himself acknowledges he has some responsibility over Cellbit, looking at Cellbit right now feels like looking in a mirror, he doesn't like having to give up on him, but if it's between him and the kids he's choosing the kids every time... and he knows there is no simple way to save someone who refuses to let themself be saved.

And it hurts! It hurts seeing Cellbit like this! It hurts having to let him burn! It hurts watching someone he cares for falling down the same path he is! It hurts knowing he's hurting others the way it did for him seeing Cellbit like this! It hurts having to choose his kids over his protege/ student/ former responsibility/ the kid he watched over years ago/ old friend/ his 'something'!

Like, cc!Bad brought up this internal mental tier list that q!Bad has- I still deeply believe that q!Cellbit is quite high up there even if he'll never be at the level his kids are at- like he loves Cellbit enough that he ACTUALLY CONSIDERED putting parts of his months long plan at risk to save him- even if it was just during the stress of that moment that still means a LOT from Bad- but he was always going to choose his kids in the end!

Based on what I know of q!Bad (which is admitably not a lot lol) there is next to nothing that'd convince him to give up on his kids- with Cellbit he's able to see that he can't help him because Cellbit sadly does not want to be saved- and for Bad that means he simply has to accept it even if he really doesn't like it- the emotions from that night have processed and he's looking at the situation from a more logical and resolute perspective. If it means him and Cellbit may one day clash, then with a heavy sigh so be it....

but if it was Dapper or Pomme... I just don't feel certain in saying he'd be able to come to that conclusion, especially not after one night. Even if it would be the 'smart' thing to do. It's one of the key differences between the dynamic he has with them vs Cellbit...

But, in a perfect situation, he would've done everything to save them both.

What do you do when a friend really wants to play a game with you but it's a horror game and you Really really do not like horror games because horror media tends to make your paranoia worse but you have already said no to most of her suggestions because well. Hello and happy Halloween! Just a quick post to pop in to the feed and say THANK YOU to everyone who has been following along with AGBInk this year! It means so much to know that there are people out there who like my writing enough to engage with it!

This month's total word count came out to 57,076 words, which is... insane. Even spread out over 31 different pieces, that's still an average of nearly 1850 words a day! I really do think this writing challenge was a good thing for me. Hopefully, over the course of November, I'll be able to post not only new stuff, but work on editing and re-uploading my old ABGInk fics from 2019!
