If We Have Each Other Verse

An AU in which Neil and Andrew meet much earlier. Promises are exchanged, deals are made and they become each other's sanctuary soon after meeting.

So wanted to talk about my AU a bit, and drop it here so I don't end up forgetting certain details.

Neil's mother kills Nathan when he is 4 years old before sending him to a 'friend' of hers. She dies soon after and that 'friend' drops him off at the orphanage.

Andrew is 8 and Neil 6 when they meet for the first time in the Spear household.

Mary used to call him Abram, Nathan called him Nathaniel, his mother's 'friend' Chris and than he was named 'Alex'. Andrew is the one who gives him the name Neil, and tells him to stay.

Andrew is 3 years younger than Aaron, and Tilda dies from an accident (Andrew isn't the one to kill her).

Nicky still comes back and tries to take in Andrew, but it isn't easy and he can only get the custody of Aaron- none of the Hemmick's know where Andrew is. (by that time, Andrew would be 10, Aaron 13 and Nicky 17-18)

Andrew Joseph Doe becomes Andrew Dobson and Alex Doe becomes Neil Winfield quickly enough thanks to the accident that puts an end to Tilda.

They are adopted around the time Wymack creates the Foxes. (so pretty much Seth's first year)

Seth:These two are shit-heads, but hurt them, and you gotta deal with me (along with the other four foxes)!

Also Seth: Andrew fucking Dobson! Get your ass over here, Jesus Christ, why the fuck would you think it a good idea to change my shampoo with pink hair dye?!

Andrew: You should be grateful to me! Now both your insides and outsides filled with shit! And you look like one from head to toe too!

They meet the three ravens much earlier and promises are exchanged between our duo and two of the raven's.

Neil and Andrew also get to go to the same school growing up and gain the heart of 'a certain captain of USC Trojans Exy team'.

Their childhood is much better after they are adopted, and while in canon their relationship is more 'Enemies to Lovers' it turns into 'Childhood Friends to Lovers'.

Matt just loves picking up Neil and running around with him on his shoulders, but is low key scared of Andrew, because who the fuck gave this kid knives?!

One day, Andrew is in Wymack's office as he is looking at Potential players, and sees Aaron's photo and goes; "I want that one." and Wymack is done with it all, but who is he to say no when Andrew really wants something.

Aaron sees Andrew for the first time after years, and is thinking 'what am I supposed to say' when Andrew straight out tells him that he is only in the Foxes because of him, and yeah, Aaron hates the little menace (not really though) Nicky is apologetic, but Andrew knows how hard he tried to get custody of him, so he doesn't harbor any negative feelings towards him.

Dan is scared of what will happen when the duo is old enough for Uni, because Andrew promised to be a problem for her and she knows that he wasn't joking.

But Lola is still alive and a bitch, so that's nice.

(ft. Andrew never has to take his pills, Neil never has to fear his father the way he does. Mama Betsy and Abby, Uncle Wymack. Andrew and Neil meeting before they are supposed to and coming to an understanding between each other and never really hiding anything from each other. They would def still end up together. Like, after Neil realizes that he can love someone and not get punished for it. Foxes love to spoil the duo.)

friendly reminder that we only have the books and know the characters because nora spend years crafting, writing, editing, etc and then she was kind to let the rest of the world read it when she could had just keep that to herself (and the fact she did end up having to remove some of it because of people that claimed to love her world, her characters, her books shit on her for every decision she made)

dead man walking is an intriguing name i’d love to know more

dead men walkin is my baby!!!!! It's my magnum opus. It is also so big (12 at least 10k planned chapters) I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it in this lifetime. BUT I'M TRYING.

It's a kandreil, canon divergence AU that follows my first instict in literally every fandom because people should not have let me watch Count of Monte Cristo as a child: but what if this story was about revenge? It is also a love letter to the kandreil narrative parallels because there are SO MANY of them. There's also a lot of themes AFTG fic could explore that I feel fit better in a canon-adjacent scenario.

I also really love the synopsis so I'll let it speak on the rest of the premise for me:

Dead man walking (idiom) 1. A condemned prisoner walking to a death chamber or other place of execution.  2. Someone who is soon to die. 3. (figurative) Someone who is about to face an unavoidable loss (though the person may not realize it). .... When his mother dies, a runaway is told the reason why his life fell apart. A year later, Neil Josten is signed by the Palmetto State Foxes right before the season starts, looking to get his revenge or die trying. He might find a reason to live instead.

RIP Janie Smalls your canon last-second suicide attempt was just too convenient. Sorry about the mafia hit girl get well soon.

Though the fic is going to span the AFTG original timeline, I'm not going for a beat-by-beat series rewrite because that's just not the kind of thing that interests me. I'm keeping the exy games and that's it, everything else is getting at least a make over. A REVENGE make over.

I have also decided to make this a triple POV situation which means I saddled myself into writing medicated Andrew's internal monologue for 5 chapters. This was probably a mistake!

need to know about any and all aftg fics you’ve got in the works please and thank you

because I’m not hyperfixating on it rn / have been kind of taking a break from this fandom I haven’t been actively working on or thinking about either of these since like, fall 2023. But:

•Kevin wip. — what I wrote so far is kind of a Drabble but it’s mostly pre canon focused on his grief over Kayleigh, also there’s some pre canon Kandrew in there.

•wanna be the power ballad that (lifts you up and holds you down) — the first chapter of this is on my ao3 (nazyalenskys) and it was originally meant to be 3 chapters but I never finished the second.. I posted it in 2022 so if I ever finish like I said will probably rewrite the one that’s published. But it was kind of a response fic to one of my favorite kandrew fics which I will link later, but the premise of that is essentially the Moriyamas freak Kevin out before his first pro game and a sort of Kandrew comfort sex hook up takes place with Neil’s consent, and I wanted to write a Kandreil navigating the aftermath of that type of scenario. The chapter I wrote was mostly a lot of Andrew introspection and a convo between him and Neil about it, the second chapter I started but didn’t get too far with was going to be entirely an Andrew and Betsy session, and the third was going to be him going to visit Kevin for the first time after this happened. So set of for post canon Kandreil but I was going to focus mostly on Andrew’s feelings and the Kandrew side of it (Kandrew is my favorite Aftg ship if you didn’t know, I love Andreil a lot too they’re definitely my favorite canon mlm ship in any media and I love their arc but Kandrew was what I generally went for when it came to exploring dynamics, they compel me for a lot of the same reasons Adansey do in terms of the divorced energy and the class divide and the fundamental miscommunication that’s interesting rather than annoying, and two chars with control issues as trauma responses having symptoms at each other, and characters desiring autonomy but also being codependently devoted to each other in ways that contradict that… yeah (I totally get the Ronsey-Kandrew and Adansey-Kevneil parallels that are commonly talked about but like. Kandrew-Adansey is real 2 me). • this isn’t really a wip but I did want to mention that I actually first wrote fanfiction on a different ao3 account and started during quarantine, and Aftg was my quarantine hyperfixation (with Community and Legacies which I also wrote for) so I wrote quite a bit at that time that’s floating around but most of it I’m content to never continue with, but there is One I might go back to at some point and it’s this Renee centric fic with some Renee x Dan called Sweet Fascination that was originally meant to be the first in a series about Renee in high school. At some point I might rewrite and repost that fic on my current acc and continue that as a kind of series of introspective one shots. Ty! I've read aftg for the first time last year after seeing posts about it on tumblr for years and I didn't like it 😭😭 I was so sure I would. I wonder if it was due to my mental state at the time (not good). But seeing all your posts about it definitely made me want to give it another chance because theoretically it has everything I love in fiction and I trust your taste

WITCHCRAFT!!! i really like the idea of cozy neil crocheting, gardening and baking… and that's probably why i LOVE the idea of witch neil! (no supernatural elements, just a normal modern witch)

a rewrite of aftg. everything is the same. except

mary is secretly a witch and teaches neil everything she knows

neil's binder is a book of shadows / grimoire

neil has a LOT of amulets! necklaces, bracelets etc all handcrafted by himself. when he starts to get familiar with the foxes, he makes for them too

TAROT! he obsessively reads the future for himself and the foxes! watch out for the king cards! allison and renee weekly ask him for advice

crystals! neil carries at least a quartz with him everywhere he goes. amethyst for kevin's hungovers. meditation with rose quartz when he starts hooking up with andrew.

neil always forgets sabbats

sigils/runes!!!! he draws them everywhere! exy racquets, notebooks (we all know neil doodles in the margins), phones, his duffle, allison's beauty products AND HIS SCARS

tea!! after his first night at eden's he makes spearmint tea to control his anger, garlic tea to expel negative energy and evil eye. also,,, he lights a black candle (our little candle collector) for banishment and takes a coarse salt bath for cleaning

fennel seeds under his pillow to keep nightmares away

saint george's sword at the dorm entrance for protection

neil puts pretection spells all over the fox tower. many students have reported odd events where they see a tiny little weird guy reciting ancient words of prayer in the hall

neil's water bottle at practice is alway full of sun or moon water

I had to focus on school for a bit, but I’m (hopefully) done after next week ((:

Im currently working on details for an aftg rewrite, but it’s almost becoming more of a.. au in canon divergence than rewrite at this point with the things I’m changing, but we’ll see!!

I mainly want to make it more realistic-ish and remove some of the harmful stereotypes etc etc etc (maybe add a bit more diversity too.. you already know I’m doing that whoops)

I also figured out that apparently an exy field is about the size of an SOCCOR FIELD. Mad respect for the foxes to be able to run over that field with a team of 9, because in a soccor players line up it is 11 on each half. I am totally not thinking about changing that up… (I am.. I’m planning to add an extra dealer to the court so the line up + plays would make more sense.. wow my jock side is showing right now.. but yes! That means an oc. They won’t be very important or related to any of the main characters, they’ll just be a fox!)

Well that was my update for now! Maybe I’ll be posting some random posts again soon, or maybe the next time I’m back it’s to update about the rewrite.. au… again!

Abuse aftermath is seen to seriously by Wymack and Abby; consequences are left in the hands of the Foxes; a few finally make unprecedented moves. Kevin just wants to die, so maybe nothing's different. (Except it is; has to be.)

Kevin felt the eyes of all his teammates on him, looking, seeing, condoning or pitying or denying. He kept his eyes on Andrew and his locked jaw, his brow, the tenseness in his fingers, spread up his arms and coiled in the rest of him like a nocked bow.

"What." Kevin finally said, breaking the silence between them for the first time since Andrew made him talk. His voice was a mangled mess of a thing, launched out of him as if to rip and ruin.

Andrew stared back at him, mouth clenched shut, and didn't speak. Wouldn't. His eyes were iron-blue.

Favorite fic I wrote: Probably either wildest dreams or the stars and the nothing! The stars and the nothing is still the only time I’ve ever cried while writing something. I love writing comedy and fluff, but these two were my first jabs at angst and I still like what I did with them. <3

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: Probably show me, don’t tell -- I had planned three installments and I have the second installment completely mapped out. One day, I’ll actually stitch it all together! 

Also, I have the Solace Sisters Easter scene half-written for Rental Love*, so maybe I’ll actually finish that one day haha. 

Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: I’ve been mostly invested in classes right now, but I did start writing another AFTG game fic--it’s a McDonalds/Diner AU because Why Not. I have almost nothing written out but dialogue that doesn’t make sense out of context so here’s a small dialogue piece that just shows Andrew’s an asshole Who I Love. Anyway, Andrew, Aaron, Nicky, Kevin, Renee, Jean and Dan work at the diner while Neil and Matt work at the local McDonalds. 

“The German is here,” Andrew yelled over his shoulder while standing at said German’s table. “Nicky, are you taking this table or what?” 

Nicky, with a rare blush filling his cheeks, hurried out of the backroom. “Yes! I mean,” He stopped at the very last second before ramming into the table, out of breath. “It’s in my section. So yes.” 

“This is my section,” Andrew only said before walking away, “but whatever.”
