working in a factory has you thinking so much about the insane chain of labor & transport that goes into making literally anything
#like first you realize that You are making & doing things that you previously had thought - if you'd thought abt it at all - were automated#& you become incredibly aware of how all the materials you're working with came from somewhere - these plastic clips are from france; this#fabric is from india etc. and that there are people in factories there making those things and that they are also probably getting their#materials from somewhere#one of the little things that makes me think about this the most is we have these 50m rolls of cotton banding we see onto canvas & nets#and in theory it should be all one piece but sometimes it's actually two pieces which you discover when you get far enough in the roll and#find that there's a join where it's been stitched together by hand (!). which is a little annoying bc we can't use that bit so you have#to cut that but out & stitch it together again on the machine which interrupts what you were sewing before & slows you down But it's so#striking to me bc like it's really easy to look at this banding & it's so exactly the same & obviously machine made it's Really easy to#forget that there are people there running these machines. who notice there's a break & have to stop what they're doing & get a needle &#thread and stitch it together. by hand! like someone somewhere has handled exactly where I'm touching it & i don't even know where in the#world they are!#the other place this happens is often on the selvedge edge of the fabric there's writing in pencil i don't know ye meaning of but evidently#was important to the process somewhere & someone wrote that out#idk like it's really easy to watch those videos of really specific machines in factories & convince yourself that everything is automated#but the truth is the vast majority of stuff is not & is made by people doing that. & even when it is there are people running those machine#<- and i'm not saying this in a soppy way tbc. this whole system is a nightmare of exploitation & to some degree I'm just continually amaze#by how insane this whole process is & also how completely un-transparent it is unless you are made to think abt it#another thing is noticeable when you look at our orders that most of what we sell isn't to customers it's to shops who then sell to custome#which then makes you think like. those plastic clips from france are they actually made in france or are we just buying them from france?#are they actually made by underpaid people in a country the name of which is completely lost to the chain of production at this point#anyways none of this is new it's just when you are working in a factory using this stuff you start wondering like.#what's the factory like that the person who stitched this banding together like. what's their day like there#wish we could talk abt how fucked up this all is - for them especially probably - together#thoughts

so help me god if I tanked the chance for a well-paid job with full medical benefits, sick leave, paid vacation time, etc. because I hardly ever do machine seam-finishing
I'm going to be. really really really upset
#personal#did a sewing test for a theatrical costuming job at a big local theatre the other day#did my best but I know some of my samples were probably quite wonky because I'm used to finishing seams by hand#and thus having more control to make adjustments as I go#a few I had to look up how to do on my phone- but then the proctor told me I could do that and they do it frequently in the shop#I go back and forth between 'it'll be fine; I probably did fine; they SAID they take all skill levels and that they google how to do things#and 'oh there's no WAY I'm getting this gig'#it was an interesting experience because the shop manager like. stopped me on the street to ask if I made my dress#and then if I would be interested in maybe joining her team#but now I'm like 'are they even going to believe I made the things I sent them pics of'#'or that they saw me wearing [I wore my winter coat to the test because it was V. Cold]'#'after my machine-felling on organza was an uneven disgrace'#I can fit and copy patterns from books and even do a bit of draping#I can do a lot of hand-stitching finishes pretty quickly and evenly#I can do insertion lace and soutache#I've made hats before#but I just. haven't done a lot of machine-finishing#and that's all they tested me on really#also sewing on snaps and one (1) hand-finishing stitch#(one I hardly ever use anyway- catch-stitch/zigzag stitch)#(I fell my hems generally speaking)

#kirby#daily kirby#my art#digital#hal laboratory#nintendo#guess who dumped my planter off the shelf and got dirt all over my room while I was in the bath it was my dumb little cat!#so that was frustrating.#at least there wasn't *that* much dirt on my bed and my partner has a little hand vacuum I could use to get most of it.#(then he vacuumed the floor with the big vacuum for me after work)#the only thing that didn't really get clean enough to keep using is the cover I made for my comforter#but it's removable and I'd been meaning to make a new one anyway#I even already got the fabric I just don't have desk space for my sewing machine with the sock machine in use.

...use the Hand of Glory as a candlestick to hold this candle when lighted, and then those in every place into which you go with this baneful instrument shall remain motionless...
#em draws stuff#oc time again hehe#haunted by your hand#the gambler: james webster#and (excitingly)#bweirdOCtober#yes I am doing day one on day two. what of it. at least I am doing it.#on account of his being the girl of all time. my jamesie :)#I want to get better at doing finished-looking pieces that aren't full-color and would hypothetically be more compatible with zineification#unfortunately the sewing machine I've been using at work is a rather rattly heavy-duty singer and now my drawing arm is sore :/#so this still took one million years to draw despite the fact that it's far less involved than it could have been#oh yeah. caption is from the grillot de givry version of the petit albert; or as you may know it Thee hand of glory recipe

you know what I think would have been interesting?
Episode where someone is gravely wounded and only primitive (e.g. 20th Century Earth level) surgical supplies are available. Garak and Julian have to collaborate to save the patient because while Julian knows what's in there and what needs to come out, Garak's the one who actually knows how to stitch.
#ds9#while I'm sure Garak uses a sewing machine and like a sonic seam ripper or something#I think he's also learned a lot of hand stitching in case of a fashion emergency and also to mess with people#'surely he's just pretending to be a simple tailor... damn him that whipstitched rolled hem is perfect'#Julian meanwhile could use 23rd Century surgical instruments at a pinch#but nothing more primitive

clover plushie planning???
don't get me wrong, i adore my clover plushie designed by gingerkingfisher, but i think it'd be fun to make my own! she is my favorite ii character, after all!! (the more the merrier haha)
say, does anyone have any tips for making the body nice and solid? i don't want her head to droop, and i imagine it'd be on the heavier side considering how large it'd be. i'd want to put wire in her arms anyway so they'd be posable, so maybe i could also put wire in her body?? not sure... and yeah she'd be more stable if she were smaller, but i want her to be cuddly :)
the head would be two pieces, front and back (the pattern would be made by tracing four of the leaf pattern). the body could either just be front and back like the head, or with a circular piece on the bottom too for shape (the arms and legs would be sewn into the side body seams). either way, i'd want to attach the body to the middle of the back of her head, as that's where the stem would reasonably attach to the leaves - but that might contribute to the drooping i was worrying about. her face details would all be sewn on, cuz i'm bad at embroidery :P
if you have any tips/suggestions, i'd love to hear them! thanks!! <3
#dandy's doodles#<- i guess?#inanimate insanity#ii#ii clover#aaaaugh she'd be so cute!! i could buy plushie fabric and make her all nice in my mom's sewing machine#say... what did jnj use to make their flower plushie not droopy? cuz she has a big head and a long body too#i want to make a nice big sturdy clover plushie to play with... to smooch on the head...#i'm also considering making little butterflies and having some way for them to attach to her. like magnets maybe?

I JUST REALIZED I FORGOT TO POST PICS WHEN I FINISHED THIS it took me ten thousand years but it's a bag designed to go with a cosplay that I'm entering into a competition this weekend :3 the clear plastic is recycled from a bedding bag and the buttons are all hand painted because I wanted them to be green but I only had black. The lining is also hand sewed in!
#crochet#i have never worn the cosplay with the wig yet since i finished styling it so no pics to post#but i will get some this weekend!#can you guess who it is :3 the color scheme and plushies give it away i think#i am so proud of how this bag turned out. genuinely it was way harder than it had to be but i think it looks so clean#ive never done zippers before but they were easier than i expected!#really excited to be able to show off my plushies with the cosplay :3 literally that was the entire reason for making this#i started using a different sewing machine because my old one is shit and threw a fit when i tried to sew the plastic#the new one is sooooooo good. i could have been using it sooner but my dumbass did not know embroidery machines can also be sewing machines

the annoying thing about having a sewing machine but it’s buried in the basement is i have a sewing machine but it’s buried in the basement. you can’t use something that’s buried in the basement
#thinking about how if asos doesn’t carry my favorite brand of jeans anymore & i can’t buy them directly from the brand (don’t ship to us)#then i need to really repair the ones i already have. if only i had a sewing machine#also if only i had the studio space at work that my boss promised me a year and a half ago. lol. you know what i would put in there?#sewing machine.#anyway i guess i could ask my roommate if i could use her machine#or god forbid PAY to go to studio time at the fabric store.#chatpost

Bought a booksleeve at barnes and nobles this weekend for my freewrite- they only had lile two designs and the size was BARELY enough to fit it so I had to fight with the zipper to get it in. Got into the parking lot and thought "I could've probably just made one" and decided that would be the incentive to finally put my sewing machine to use in 2024
#ngl she kinda cute for being done with a pattern i crafted in 5 min on printer paper#tj talks#craft tag#the topstitching is shit but thats because the binding was uneven so it wouldnt have worked on my sewing machine#i think in the future ill have to use wider bias tape methinks?#if i could get a clean stitching on the bias tape i could probably make a few and do a craft fair this year so i caj FINALLY-#-get rid of the fabric i have hoarded over the past four years#what do we think gang#did a metal snap closure cause my brain was not allowing me to figure out how to put a zipper in

uh oh having ideas outside of my realistic ability range (wanting to make a maxi skirt out of an old tapestry I got from a friend)
#I JUST THINK IT WOULD BE SLAAAYYY#but I only know how to hand sew and don’t know how to use a clothing pattern and don’t have a sewing machine#but I HAVE mended and hemmed my own clothes before ????? much to consider#could be cool……. or could be a flop and I’d have ruined a nice swath of fabric

When you are a tiny lady so your mum has to make you your own vest bc no commercial tiny dog vests are large enough to be legible or fit useful info
#vests#whata ya think!???#there’s parts i defi Italy messed up on and of course it’s not as crisp as a computerize embroidery machine yknow#but for my first try and doing it entirely with a standard sewing machine and hand sewing#I’m not too mad at the end result#lots of bits I wish I could have done better#but happy enough with it that it’ll get used for sure

did you watch tua s4 and if so what did you think :3
yeah i watched it
#crazy to be reminded that happened i've been trying to block it out of my mind since august but sure#honest thoughts: i've been kind of checked out since s3 was so mid but i didn't expect s4 to be THAT bad#i thought it was a terrible season with very few redeeming qualities especially when it came to five's storyline#pretty much completely nonsensical and removed from everything i liked about the first two seasons#also just lazy. like the plot doesn't make sense. why is jennifer in a squid. how did reg wipe their minds and why did he only do it once#why can you see other people's memories in the memory returning machine somehow#why did they hire a 13 year old in the fbi and how did he get such a high ranking position#what was the point of sewing all that irritation between diego and lila out of nowhere and why are they trying pretend diego was fat#what happened to sloane. what happened to allison's deal with reg.#if no one remembered ben's death why did they all talk about it like they did and how did klaus never notice that w ghost ben#why do they all care so much about a version of ben they didn't grow up with who hates them#how would five's initial plan for the subway fix everything if stopping the jennifer incident#would only save the ben who died in their timeline and not the one from the sparrow timeline who is causing the problem#if he knew they could timeline jump w the subway why wouldn't they just jump back in time to their original timeline#why is everyone in this world part of the jean and gene cult or whatever like there's no characters outside their circle who aren't involve#why does allison have new powers and why did she use them instead of her rumoring when she was trying to get info out of someone#and of course. what was the point of all that.#soundtrack wasn't even good. we used to be a society.#anyways. i liked viktor's bar and the implication that he still sucks so bad at dating#and five's ash ketchum haircut was fun.#i don't care about this season at all otherwise and i like to pretend it never happened so i can still enjoy the show and characters <3#which is very is easy bc it was so mindblowingly stupid it doesn't even feel real

Somebody gives me a good sewing machine and I immediately begin researching to make a historically accurate Luocha themed dress except we don't know enough about him yet so I have to dig through the HI3 wiki for Otto to get enough crumbs for this project
Somebody stop me
#nihil dreams#honkai star rail#luocha#FUCK YOU I CANT BE STOPPED#WE RIDE AT DAWN#I just know if I end up getting past the pattern pains my back is gonna hurt like a bitch#Being hunched over a sewing machine is it's own kind of hell#Local idiot says she's scared of cosplay and then decides to make a historical costume which could qualify as a cosplay more at 11#Anyways Otto thanks for being born in 15th century I can use Romeo and Juliet costuming for reference

Sewing machines, man
Normal instructions: Hey be careful not to do X, or the results might not be as neat! Avoid Y, as it could waste materials. Make sure not to Z, or you'll have to start over!
Sewing machine instructions: Don't you DARE so much as TOUCH X. You see X, right there? DON'T TOUCH IT! I'M WARNING YOU! The machine will become possessed by vengeful ghosts and stab you to death while you sleep, we warned you! Make ABSOLUTE SURE you NEVER do Y. The needle will EXPLODE and PEPPER YOU WITH SHRAPNEL. And if you EVER, I mean EVER even THINK about doing Z, your entire living space will be ravaged by the literal hellfire that spews forth from your sewing machine. This also voids the warranty.
#sewing#I understand why but it's still funny#and a little ominous while I read the instructions#Most things we use today are very safe#Any possible thing that could hurt you or your thing is usually removed#or otherwise put behind a ton of obvious safeguards#but when we get to sewing machines...#There's only so much you can do safety wise with a machine designed to stab thick fabric hundreds of times as quickly as possible
