something i think is really important for the yellowjackets fandom to remember is that saying that the girls are all insane OR saying that they're totally innocent are both fundamentally incorrect statements.

like don't get me wrong i adore all the jokes about both. i make both of those kind of jokes. they're funny and there's nothing wrong with being like 'shauna my favourite batshit insane girly' or 'misty's #1 defence attourney never did anything wrong' or anything like that. like it's funny, and like this is a fandom, it's not that serious.

but i think in terms of like... actually understanding the show and characters and being able to actually understand the themes and story it's telling it's really important to remember that outside of just silly jokes and memes... that is not the case.

none of them are actually straight-up insane or evil (yes, not even misty), and none of them are completely innocent babies. that is very important to the entire show is that they are all just people. they're not batshit, they're traumatised, and mentally ill, or they're just confusing teenage girls. but those things don't also excuse all their actions. that's the point. and i think it's important in fandom spaces, especially these days when media literacy seems to be at an all time low, to be able to separate silly fandom jokes with the actual show.

every day i think about the difference in how jackie and shauna hallucinated each other. i'm sure other people have also said this but

jackie's hallucination of shauna was of one who was kind, and loving, and forgiving. one who was happy to put their stupid teenage drama behind them, because ultimately, they're best friends, and that's what matters. one who loves jackie, and doesn't hesitate to tell her that. one who saves jackie from the cold and reminds her that in the end, it's ok, because they're best friends.

but shauna's hallucination of jackie is mean. yes, they sit together and hang out and play silly games and gossip, but jackie is biting and cruel. she calls shauna out on her flaws and is constantly judgemental. she mocks shauna and haunts her, judging her actions and laughing at her. this jackie is one who, yes, is shauna's best friend, but is infinitely better than her and knows it.

to jackie, shauna is her best friend in the world, and all she really wants is to stop fighting and just exist together. to jackie, she loves shauna and shauna loves her and that's all that really matters.

to shauna, jackie is a constant, unforgiving presence reminding her of all she can never be, and all she can never have. shauna loves jackie, but she doesn't believe that jackie loves her.
