Spitfire - Public Service Broadcasting
Sometimes an idea comes along so simple and perfectly timed that it hits you in the face like a wet fish. This is one of those ideas.
Take old Public Information films from the 40s and 50s. Clip out the austere sounding advice they dispense - add tumbling guitars and ambient rock and BOOM you've just invented a new genre of music.
London/UK is about ripe for this sound too at the moment. The coalition, the post-olympic blues, fashions and the long winter have primed people for this. There's a relatively big "40s themed night out" scene running in London at the moment, tea dances, blitz themes the lot. This slots right in.

Diary - The D.O.T.
Something slightly different today and a bit more transient than most other posts as today we've got a cheeky preview of the new album from The D.O.T. the Mike Skinner and Rob Harvey project.
A significant departure - musically - from their previous groups (the Streets and The Music respectively) but still strong in the lyrical sense. Some classic Skinner lines fall out of these tracks.
This still has the "homebrew" sound of two guys writing and recording tracks in their front-rooms.

Heartbreaks + Setbacks - Thundercat
A simple background swims along with watery flowing synth sounds over the top and while Thundercat spits some lyrics over the top - spilling his heart out to another. With a lovely ending on some juicey keyboards.

Tuna Melt - A-Trak & Tommy Trash
It's sunny (for this week at least)
It's time to get out your summery clothes
and time to release your summer hits.... of which this track is ALREADY a classic. It almost didn't even need the ridiculous domino-rally style video.

Get Lucky (Preview) - Daft Punk (Feat. Pharrell)
Wow - today's track isn't even a whole track. This is a preview for the new Daft Punk album "RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES" due out in May. From this track and the list of collaborators elsewhere it looks like it's going to be a belter.
There's also something weirdly hypnotic about that robot playing the drums.
Updated post with THE FULL SONG to be released today!

Stare at the Sun - Eleanor Friedberger
A first taste of an early summer hit - now that the sun has finally started to come out in the UK.
A nice fuzzy breakdown a few minutes into this track, a simple whimsical video and a nice cut off ending make this surely a radio friendly summer slice.

Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle - Nirvana
19 years after Kurt Cobain ended his own life (5th April 1994) and the world changed forever. This, for me, is the best of the In Utero period. Kurt's heartfelt lyrics offered up on a genuinely emotional platter and the band rocks out hard to the relentlessness of the guitar, drums and bass

IFHY - Tyler, The Creator
There's something fascinating/worrying/disturbing about the talent and success of Tyler, The Creator - who is part of the "Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All" (often abbreviated to OFWGKTA) collective.
They've done all they have seemingly without help and just using their own tenancity (and social media) accounts.
I'd love there to be some evil secret industry masterplan putting this all together, but probably not!!..

Sacrilege - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I've always liked YYYs. They're just the right side of weird and the wrong side of f*ck you - but they can STILL crack out a tune you can sing along to.

The Pablo Cuckoo Tape - The Smiths
Sorry guys - I've been away for a few days following Noel Gallagher to Dubai (more on that later!)
Today's "song" is a bit different - It's actually a set of songs recorded by The Smiths in a jeans warehouse in Manchester in 1983. BEFORE they were signed, while they were practising to record their first album.
A few things come out of this
1) Morrissey sounds AMAZING - As always
2) The songs sound GREAT - The arrangements are great, and almost "album" perfect. Having listened to many other band demo's the songs often go through such a radical change on the studio versions that theyre often unrecognisable from the demo versions
3) The band is TIGHT - again, demos often highlight the "talent" (or lack of) of many bands, and the difference a great producer, and lots of time and repetition, that a studio recording allows. These songs are all played out live seemingly note perfect.
4) My god - they still sound fresh and current depite being 30years old.

Don't Go To Liverpool - Times New Viking
Straight from the Portland "SHITGAZE" scene of 2011 comes this track from Times New Viking. Fully embodying the spirit of lo-fi recording and indie releases.

annoyingly blocked from importing.
