 happy alternatives of things you say to people with anxiety/depression

I’ve had mental illness for my entire 18 years of life, so I made a list of things I’m tired of hearing or some sayings that could be tweaked. 

Remember to be calm when saying these things, soft smiles and just a general warm expression/attitude. Trust me, it makes a difference. Being gentle promotes comfort. 

[some of these may not be things you say, but what you might need to understand about mental illness]

[A/D] = anxiety/depression + anxious/depressed

“Why are you so depressed?” = “Would you like to talk about it?”

“Can we talk” = “I’d like to talk to you, but I promise it isn’t anything bad”

“You’re still depressed?” = “It will get better, even if it doesn’t seem like it”

“You have nothing to worry about.” = “It’s going to be okay. I’m here for you”

“My [insert name] had [A/D] too” = “You’re not alone, I promise”

“You’ll be fine.” = “If you get uncomfortable, please let me know”

“You’re just sad/tired.” = “I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this”

“Text me if you’re [A/D]” = “My phone is always on if you need to talk”

“You were doing so good for a while” = “Slow progress is still progress”

“That sucks that you’re [A/D]” = “I understand that this is a struggle for you.”

“Are you anxious?” = “Would you like to go get some fresh air?”

“You should see a doctor.” = “Have you considered medicine/therapy?”

“Is it bad again?” = “Are you having a particularly rough time right now?”

“You know that I’m here for you” = “Please don’t forget that I’ll always be here for you.”

“You good?” = “ Are you okay? Is there anything I can do to help you right now?”

“Why don’t you ever tell me when it’s bad” = “I’m here to listen if you’d like to talk”

“You need to clear your thoughts.” = “Maybe we can do something that will help calm your mind.”

“Stop thinking that way” = “I know it’s hard, but try to remember that your bad [A/D]-driven thoughts aren’t true.”

“Just breathe” =  “Let’s take a deep breath together. In through your nose and out through your mouth”

“It’s all in your head.” = “I understand that [A/D] is a mental illness and isn’t something you have a choice over.”

“Lose some weight, it’ll help” = “I understand that your [A/D] doesn’t always feel controllable and that isn’t your fault”

“You’re stronger than this.” = “Please remember that you are very strong, even on the hard days.”

“You’ll be [A/D] if you aren’t sleeping/eating well.” = Have you been sleeping/eating well? 

“I’m worried about you.” =  “You’ll be in my thoughts. I’ll be [praying/sending good vibes] that you’ll feel better soon. I care a lot for you.”

“Just stop thinking bad thoughts” = “How about we try to think of some happier thoughts? What is something that makes you happy?”

“You never go out anymore” = “If you’d like, you and I can make plans when the time comes that you’re ready. If not, that’s okay.”

“You have nothing to be depressed about” = “I understand that your depression/anxiety is hard to deal with. I’m here for you.”

“But there are people who love you” =  “I care about you and so do many other people. During the hard moments, try to remember that you are loved even if it doesn’t feel that way.”

Try [insert stupid activity/item that doesn’t help A/D], it cures [A/D]  = “I know it may not help, but if you’d ever like to try [activity/item] sometime, I’d love to help you try it.”

“Are you taking your meds?” = “How is it going with your medication?” [you’ll get your answer and it isn’t as invasive]

“You’re depressed because you [insert dumb activity] = “I understand that your [A/D] isn’t necessarily controlled by your actions and that you’ll still be [A/D] even if you don’t do this [activity].”

I’d appreciate it if this could be signal boosted, I think everybody should see this.

A blond, gluttonous dwarf and Johan's best friend, he lived in the forest neighboring the King's castle playing practical jokes on the people and stealing meats and apples before being hired as the court jester. He agreed, provided that he was not obliged to wear the jester's outfit, which he felt made him look like a "fool" (which is another term for jester). His name is pronounced "Pirlouit".

Contrary to what he believes himself, Pirlouit is a terrible musician, though, unlike Cacofonix from the Asterix series, the other inhabitants of the castle cannot bring themselves to tell him how bad he is — though the King did once make a show of removing earplugs in Pirlouit's presence. His "music" has also been known to cause rain.

Pirlouit is easily upset, especially when Johan volunteers him to go on another adventure but, being cunning and agile, he is quite capable of escaping from a tight corner and putting up a fight. When outwitting his enemies, he screams out his cry of triumph: "Piiiirlouiiiiit". In the Smurfs cartoon series, rather than being a random dwarf, he is the King's nephew, as he states in the episode The Sorcery Of Maltrochu, and is portrayed as a kid, younger than Johan.

In the canon, Pirlouit’s age is unknown like most characters from the French-Belgium comics.

His short stature is normal for his specie.

Headcanons about Pirlouit.

• Even though his native language is French, he has learned English through singing, to the point where he can have a conversation with someone whose native language it is.

• Even though he's a bit of a glutton, he sometimes cooks for others and does a much better job of it than the music.

• He uses magic to make vegetables and other plants grow, and is said to have discovered their healing powers. Apparently, even a simple potato could cure illness.

• He's not really the type to fall in love, he doesn't know what it feels like. He describes his love for food and his job as “ his true love”.

• If he goes into the future, he will become the protector of a person assigned to him.

The other person doesn't really know, so, through disguises (or without it), he stays in touch with him or her.

• If he were to appear in the 21st century, he would come out of a statue that was in a museum.

The reader would be either a night-guard, or someone who visits the museum in his spare time.

The dwarf would disguise himself when he had to mingle with the crowd.

• If the reader finds himself in the Middle Ages with a trip back in time, he'll be the first to welcome them, either by saving their lives, or they'll save his own.

Canonically, neither the kingdom nor its king have names, but the action takes place in either France or Walloon Belgium.

• He won't understand the references to the 21st century but will pretend he does.

Of course, if they're references to the Smurfs, he'll honestly know, but will be surprised that the reader knows them when even the blue creatures have never mentioned names.

• He's gifted in magic and can do almost anything, but there are some spells he won't use, either because he's still learning or because it's too dangerous.

• He's good at puppet shows, storytelling and fighting, and his small size is not to be underestimated.

• He has learned to change his size to become small, the size of a mouse, or to become gigantic, but the latter is not practical either.

He'll play tricks either way.
