So I just realized that the first time we see the inquisitor and Solas together, they're closing a fade rift...
And the last time we see them together, they're closing a fade rift :')

people who try to "remind" you of your favorite characters' horrible actions make me laugh. "Let's not forget they did this and that" yeah I haven't forgotten, I'm just too busy putting him in a cute outfit

my pettiest veilguard complaint is that solas never got to hold his staff like a wise mentor wizard character and use it as a walking stick :(((
#solas#dragon age#datv critical#NOT REALLY LOL#i just think it was cute how he'd hold his staff that way...#i don't think any other character did#they always stashed it behind their backs in cutscenes#i mean it's also pretty hot that he doesn't even need to use a staff anymore he's so powerful#but idk#the staff aesthetic...#wise hobo man

Mythal and Solas: Manifestation
I'm fascinated by how newly revealed Solas lore add context to everything he did n DAI.
Taking on a body is a turning point for Solas, but also for his relationship with Mythal. We know form DAV it was...unhealthy, to say the least.
You learn more about Mythal's character once you draw parallel between Morrigan & Solas. Both of them said to be, by Mythal, people she cared deeply about. Yet it doesn't mean she is above using them.
DAO:
Flemeth: You have been itching to get out of the Wilds for years. Here is your chance. As for you, Wardens, consider this repayment for your lives. Morrigan: Mother…this is not how I wanted this.I am not even ready- Flemeth:You must be ready. Alone, these two must unite Ferelden against the darkspawn. They need you, Morrigan. Without you, they will surely fail, and all will perish under the Blight. Even I. Morrigan: I…Understand.
DAV:
Mythal: You have so long observed the world. Why not consider joining it? Solas: But I have no desire to live as humans. I have the Fade. Besides, this talk of taking on a solid form…I think you underestimate the danger. When you took the glowing stone to build your body, did the earth not shake? Mythal: The lyrium gives us the strength we had when we were of the Fade. We are the best of physical and spirit. I need your wisdom, Solas, to withstand the louder voices who will go too far, like Elgar’nan. I need you. Solas: This is madness. You must know that. (Sighs) I will always follow where you go.
Mythal (or Flemeth) wants to have something from both Solas and Morrigan. Bring Solas to her side. Send Morrigan to acquire an old god soul. In both cases, Mythal shows a similar manipulation strategy.
Try to present it as something they would want (Solas, wouldn’t you like to experience something you looked at for so long? Morrigan, wouldn't you like to finally explore the world beyond the Wilds?)
Frame the request as if that’s the right thing to do and only they can help (Without your wisdom,Solas, others will go too far. Without you, Morrigan, warners will surely fail.)
Appeal to what they feel for Mythal (I need you, Solas. Without you helping the wardens, Morrigan, I will die.)
In retrospect, all the signs were there. In the very conversation she ignores his boundaries, coerces him into giving what she wants and ignores his wisdom.
p.s.: It's unfortunate that we don't really have much information about Mythal and her side of the story when Elvhenan was forming. I wonder why she took on a body in the first place.

i do have to say that i like elgar'nan and ghilan'nain as our primary villains. because they look like cartoon bad guys on the surface but if you look a little deeper and find all those hidden little notes and codex entries, it's obvious they actually do have complexity that they don't want us to see.
ghilan'nain is actively in mourning. not just for andruil, but also for her fucked up little experiment of an archdemon, her most perfect creation, razikale. at the end of fire and ice, she is ready to throw herself into a fight that she might not win because she's blinded by her own grief, and she only doesn't because elgar'nan holds her hand and pulls her away. protects her. we can find notes that talk about how elgar'nan is concerned that she's not taking time to mourn properly. we know she's checked in on her first creations, the halla, despite the fact that she writes about them in this sort of detached, almost patronizing way. she calls them something she made when she was "untraveled and naive" and that she could never make them again, but she visited them just to see what they might have become in her absence. like she cares more than she wants to let herself.
and elgar'nan calls her sister, despite the fact that ghilan'nain is the youngest of them. he lets her experiment on lusacan for the express purpose of cheering her up. and when she dies he seems legitimately torn apart by it. what should be an opportunity for the first of the firstborn to finally become the sole tyrant he was practically made to be is instead him becoming completely and utterly alone, the only remaining of his kind. i don't think it's coincidence that both he and solas drift to each other as they do, even if it is as enemies. they're too alike, and they're also the only remnants of the old world, their world, that either of them have.
i can't say that i'm particularly sympathetic to either of them—they're both unrepentant monsters who have committed atrocities across millenia, but the fact that they have this hidden depth reminds me that at of the day they are not really anything that no one else is. they are very powerful mages that other people called gods. and people can be very sentimental, indeed.

[DA: Veilguard] Solas on Inquisitor
Love the difference based on your relationship with Solas. I suspect the choice that determines where you are friend or not is the choice to stop him or save in Trespasser.
Solas: When I served the Inquisition, I tried to avoid entanglements.
Romance
Rook: Except for Inquisitor Lavellan.
Solas: I said that I resolved to do so, not that I succeeded. She is a good woman. Growing close to her was selfish of me.
Rook: Do you regret it?
Solas: I live with countless regrets. Some of them I have grown to cherish more than my victories.
Inquisitor choose to save Solas
Rook: What about the Inquisitor? Does he not count as a friend?
Solas: He does. One of several I grew fond of despite myself when I was with the Inquisition.
Inquisitor choose to stop Solas
Solas: He was useful. Bu there we others I grew fond of despite myself when I was with the Inquisition.
Solas: (proceed to talk about Cole, Josephine and Cassandra) I suppose I did bond with the Inquisition after all, as you have with your team.
Gareth David Lloyd, VO of Solas, is GOAT as usual. His delivery of romance version is so emotional, yet you can see that he is reluctant to open up to Rook. There are also difference in face expressions and I'm living for nuances in romance version. Yes, solavellan doesn't get much mentions in the game, but when it does, it cooks.
And the romance! It changes per phrase.
When he mentions Lavellan, he is sad and longing.
Then he is frustrated at himself for hurting her:
The only time he smiles (and it is important, as with other versions when he tells about Inquisition members he smiles all the time) is when he reaffirms he doesn't regret their relationship.

thinking very casually about how in one of felassan's codex entries he writes that solas always thought mythal would join them one day, and that he believed it so strongly that he made a place for her near him in the fade, but she never came, and he never saw her again. thinking even more casually about how all these many centuries later solas seems stunned when lavellan comes to join him. comes to stand at his side and support him, as he hoped mythal would do. how stunned he is when the person he loves (who he did not even dare hope would join him, this time) does exactly that. in the fade, for the rest of their days.

oh wait do you not like the solavellan kiss in dav?? tell us more. unless you have in which case i need to dig into ur tags more
when i first saw it i honestly just thought it was kind of cringe LMFAO like that’s the only word i can use for my feeling in the moment tbh. i still think it feels a bit inappropriate for the moment. the angle of the scene itself doesn’t show Solas’s reciprocation very well, his facial expression is hidden by his collar, and you can’t see the way he is grabbing her hands back in the frame, so it felt kind of too much for her to be kissing him after he was literally going through the most insane emotional breakdown like 10,000 yrs in the making. i still maintain that a non-kiss would have been better. we have plenty of insane delicious solavellan kisses and this one doesn’t really add to the roster in my opinion. i think lavellan putting a hand to his cheek and wiping a tear away…. ohhhh my god. yeah that would probably have been my preference.
i think it feels less like the natural thing that would’ve happened in the moment and more like a performance that was being put on for the sake of the audience, us as the players. like solas did not need to be kissed in that moment. lavellan has already proven her devotion to him. a kiss does not do anything for him in what was a very vulnerable moment. they are literally about to go into the black city sex dungeon for eternity, they have plenty of time. the trespasser kiss by comparison makes perfect sense, solas is being extremely self indulgent when he kisses her because he thinks it’s going to be the last time. it also serves as a distraction as he takes the anchor. it makes sense. he thinks he’s never going to see her again. of course he steals one last kiss. but the veilguard kiss has literally no reason for it happening other than for the player to see them kiss in this game, and it really takes me out of it for that reason.
however seeing flycam footage, how it is genuinely reciprocated and the way solas looks at her like she hung the moon as she pulls away, and especially the framing of it as a kiss at the altar, because it is sooooooo wedding kiss in front of your in-laws (or your husbands ex gf’s fragmented soul and the annoying kid he used to babysit) coded. so i can accept its existence for the purposes of solavellan wedding being real.
#i just wanted them to hug tbh#but i've grown more fond of the kiss#basically your entire explanation is beat for beat how i felt lol#solavellan#datv spoilers

Being in the dragon age fandom for like 12+ years is like
Dragon Age 2 release week: this game fucking sucks, they ruined the lore and the companions are cringe
Dragon Age 2, 5 years after release: this game is fantastic albeit rushed, the companions are my favorite
Inquisition release week: this game fucking sucks, they ruined the lore with these new implications
Inquisition, 5 years after release: this game is fantastic, I love the lore implications
Veilguard release week: this game fucking sucks--

I would be shocked if they brought back the Veilguard in the next game considering (spoilers)
all of them can die by the end?? and rook can be trapped in the fade with solas lol. I think they killed everyone off in certain world states to give more justification to start with a completely blank slate in the next game.
this feels insulting btw. at least to me as an older fan. because they fucking destroyed the south where our main characters from origins, 2 and inquisition lived their story and changed the world, but the veilguard? yeah the veilguard stays! i know they said there will be no dlc, and with the end credits scene they were hinting at a new story, and with this sentence and the fact that theres no real epilogue like we used to have it makes me believe that we will stay with this veilguard, even tho they always had a new main character with new companions! maybe im thinking too much about it. but still it pisses me off. specially because the veil is still intact lmao
