Mild spoiler for dragon age the veilguard (goes through the opening section at Arlathan)
I nearly died laughing at Morrigan’s dialogue about solas 😂
Morrigan: it explains why he knew so much about ancient elven history, and why he grew so vexed when I tried to explain it to him
I’m obsessed that they threw this dialogue in. We’ve all been laughing about this for years and now Morrigan straight up admitting it just made me super happy 😂

Something that drives me crazy is people talking about how the dialogue in the Veilguard is “modern.”
1) Technically, NONE of these people are speaking English, they’re speaking the common tongue of Thedas which is being TRANSLATED into English so we can understand the game.
2) They aren’t speaking the old-fashioned version of their language. They’re speaking the “modern” version of their language that feels casual to them. Do you seriously think that people from the Middle Ages thought that their language sounded old fashioned and proper? No. Obviously they were speaking casually and with slang. Applying this to Dragon Age, then, a more accurate and appropriate translation that captures the spirit of what these characters are saying would actually be one that is more casual and modern!
3) Even when fantasy writers make their characters speak “old-fashioned” it’s not even historically accurate to real life lol. All the fantasy writers talking “formally” are actually just imitating and recreating a particular register of speech and lexicon created by other fantasy authors. If we were actually writing like the Middle Ages we’d be writing all our fantasy books in old English with thees and thous and slang that only historians with this area of study know the meaning of. Yet I don’t see any fantasy books or games with people talking like that.
That said, you can totally prefer a more elevated language style for fantasy (though I maintain that it less accurately captures the spirit and true dialogue being said by the characters and hugely narrows the gap between registers so it makes it more difficult to make different characters speak uniquely from each other). However. Saying that the more modern language approach is bad writing and not an intentional and VALID decision is just foolish. It’s not and or wrong. It’s different.
#dragon age#datv#dragon age the veilguard#these criticisms are really pissing me off#who said that in order to have a fantasy world they need to talk stilted and old fashioned#not my philosophy
