Finally getting somewhere on this coat~
All the gold applique/binding is pigskin leather. I cut each of the front panels as a single piece on my Silhouette Cameo. As you can see, I made the borders extra wide on the gold pieces so that I could wrap the extra material around the edges. This way it has the same seamless look as the reference image.
Strips of thin leather (or spandex) make great bindings in lieu of bias tape. Leather does not have a grain, and therefore can’t be cut on the bias, but it is slightly stretchy and will conform around a curved edge. I gave these bindings a “Hong Kong finish” meaning that they are not folded on the back side. It’s a faster and less bulky machine-finishing technique that works well for leather edges.
I learned most of this from @gstqfashions, who has heavily influenced my style and material choices ever since I was her intern a few years ago.
This whole thing is hella shiny and exciting to look at. ✨🌟

Bunnysuit Boot Camp panel, as given at Fanimecon 2017
With the continued popularity of bunny girls in anime and popular culture, have you ever wondered how to make your own bunnysuit cosplay, but were befuddled by creating such a heavily structured garment? Join cosplayer fabrickind to learn the basics of patterning and sewing Playboy-inspired costumes and other corset-like but non-reducing garments.
This is just the bare bones of the panel, as many of the examples were elaborated on in-person, and it is just the slides, not any of my notes or in-Powerpoint drawings on the slides. (A few of those photos had drawings on top of them for illustrative purposes, but it sadly doesn’t transfer to pdf format.) It is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive, and is just meant for general advice and suggestion purposes only. If anyone has feedback they would like to give, feel free to do so. That said, I hope that people find this information useful.
Here is a link to a pdf of the presentation. You may download for personal use, but please do not alter the presentation, repost without permission, or do any sort of other unauthorized use. (If you have a question about how you can use this presentation, please send me a message with your question and we can work it out. I promise I’m not scary. ;]) Feel free to reblog this post as much as you want, though. I do these panels and post them because I want the information to be shared.
I hope someone finds this helpful! :]

That cape! It was the most simple aspect of the entire costume but I think I love it the most! Also - I’d love to shoot this final version of my dress soon! Most of my pics are from before I added all the details :/ Who wants/has time to have a shoot anytime soon?

“Who says Cosplay is unproductive?”
I come from a family who really disliked me cosplaying for a long time, saying it is “unproductive”.
My success in national competitions and event invites had started to change their minds. But what ultimately convinced them was… me helping fix shit around the house.
Today my dad’s shoe went all weird and crumbly. He was going to have to buy new shoes or new sole pads… But then I went and traced some foam, layered it and padded his shoe back up, for free.
My mum has weak finger joints. The doctors were going to charge her $200 to make her a brace. But I saw what the brace was like, and casted her one with Plasti-make, again for free. She had never struggled with her joint again.
I’d like to spread the message to parents out there: Cosplay is not unproductive. It is a form of creative problem solving. (How do make something work?)
Please encourage your kids to do something creative. If it’s making outfits from fictional characters… Then please let them. Watch them become jacks of all trades and develop their hands on and DIY skills.
