Sunday I met someone who has undoubtedly changed my life by providing a bridge into the world I most longed for entrance to, the world my mum lived in, street rat, gutter punk, homeless individuals who each have an incredible story. I brought him home Sunday with the permission of my dear flat mate, and he and I have been chilling at my place since. tonight, he took me to his haunts, he introduced me to his friends, he corrected people when they misgendered me, and gave me the ‘cock’fidence I needed to correct people myself. I feel so honored to have been given this window into the real life and blood of New Orleans. These people, who for the majority have not much left in the world, are always sharing what they have with everyone. I have been given more smokes, drinks, hash, and general acceptance than I have received anywhere else. While I love my college friends, they don’t realize that my calling, always has been and always will be, is the streets. I witnessed many kindnesses, as well as received more than a few. I was quickly welcomed into each group of musicians we stopped at, Shaman playing spoons or an offered instrument as I sat or stood nearby. I did not have to push my presence and existence into these groups, but rather was drawn into each and every one. I have been living back in my city for roughly 6 months, but not until tonight did I feel like I was actually here, in my city, on the streets with the people I most ‘vibe’ with.
