Wow. It’s November 30, and I just updated my word count for the last time this month. Another year of @nanowrimo has come to an end and even though I probably don’t have any followers that care about this, I do; I do care a lot actually. I don’t think anybody around me understands how much books and my story in particular mean to me, so I just want to use this post as an appreciation-pat-on-the-back for myself. Even when everybody questioned if I should take the time to participate this year, even if they questioned what the hell it should be good for, I still decided to go for it. Something that I’ve realized the last years is that If you wait for the “right time”, it probably never comes. Looking at my schedule, I objectively didn’t really have time for NaNoWriMo this year, and yet I wanted to do it so badly that I just made myself take the time. I might have had to cut my goal short to 20k instead of 50k words, but I’m still so incredibly proud that I pulled through and came out on the other side. Art is my refuge and I hope that one day, the world will get to see it. Until then, I’ll keep following my dreams until they come true, and when they do one day, I’m going to be thrilled to meet all of you. Lots of love and I will see you soon, Sara

Drift Away came together pretty much in one session I believe. About this one, I don’t even wanna say too much, I just want you to feel it. If you listen and it’s like getting a tight warm hug, telling you you’re not alone, I did it right.
I love you. And while that sounds sappy as hell, I don’t know any other word  that better describes the way I feel. We’re still a small circle at this point but I know deep down that we’ll grow very soon. Because of you. Because your faith in me moves me to have even more faith in what I do. So thank you. For everything.

Hunter. While writing the lyrics, I kept asking myself what it is about because (I know I mentioned this before) I never know. When I’m writing, I don’t know what it’s about. Ever. I know that might sound super weird to a lot of people but that’s just how it works for me. For me, making songs is more like putting together a puzzle that already exists than creating an entirely new picture. It’s more like translating than it is inventing.
After a while though, it became very clear to me that the first lines are about me and my life after I graduated from school. Without wanting to sound too dramatic, I realized that after years of being forced to memorize things rather than truly understanding and developing an interest in them, I had become pretty numb. Numb to my interests, to life, to the smaller things. I didn’t even know what I liked anymore, I just wanted to get the day over with. The lyrics describe the state in which I was slowly finding back to myself, re-discovering what I was passionate about - without anybody else pushing me to do something. It was a necessary evolution I had to go through. And I’m very grateful that I was given enough time and space to explore that part of myself again.
At some point, weeks or even months later, the rest of the lyrics flowed out all at once. I only realized later on that the last lines were about climate change. “a different type of human” had already touched on it, yet in a very cryptic way. With our planet, it’s just that... there’s not many things that touch me as deeply as this topic. I often feel hopeless looking at the ones in power, seeing their unwillingness to act in alignment to what needs to be done in order to serve mankind and nature alike, and not just aim for temporary benefits for companies. Watching change take place is beautiful, I mean Greta Thunberg showed us all the power that every single individual holds. I am convinced she is the exact right person to lead this movement. If we can still turn it all around you ask? I don’t know. I really don’t. But let’s at least try. x

I made the instrumental for “a different type of human” in February of 2018 (if I found the correct file, not 100% sure if that’s the original one though so please don’t come at me lol). I remember making the chords and having this bittersweet feeling, somewhat nostalgic yet incredibly beautiful. For a long time, the song didn’t have lyrics and only consisted of the piano, later on I dared to add strings but I was scared that any lyric, any sung word would ruin the whole mood of the song. At that point, the project file had the name “beautiful sad” which was indeed VERY original. But I kept opening the project every once in a while, listening to it over and over again, always thinking I would have to turn this one in a proper song someday. There was something magical about it. It created a feeling I’d never before created with my music and I wanted to embrace it. I wanted to feel more of it. And when my “7 songs in 7 months challenge” came around, I knew this was one of the projects I wanted to finally finish. I am very happy to say that I feel like the lyrics aligned nicely with the instrumental, it turned the song into something else, something with a deep meaning and I hope you can hear it in between the lines. Some of you have told me their very own interpretations of “a different type of human”. It’s different from what I had in mind but that’s what I like about making songs, everybody can find their own meaning in it. I hope you find something in it that touches you, too. Love, Sara
